Must confess I was trembling as I typed that, squeezing my keypad stick so to speak. But I managed to push it over the line somehow. The celebration was sheer joy! Now on to the important stuff: Who will be our 2015 Dipietro???? "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)

Thank you to everyone for your kind comments in response to my post below. I am indeed blessed with a wonderful family. The HIO family is okay too! :) "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)

A little story… When my son was 11 I booked a trip for us to see his first Habs game at the Bell. (he was indoctrinated from birth :)) We put the ticket in a suitcase, wrapped it and put it under the Xmas tree. He was blown away when he realized what was inside. His sister four years younger watched the goings on but did not seem overly impressed. I was not surprised…she hated hockey didn’t she? She always protested when the rec room was filled with memorabilia for the playoffs. She “hated" the Habs Xmas tree in the man cave. That was 15 years ago. Son now lives in Montreal and attends many games. When he moved away from home a couple of years ago daughter started watching every game with me. I assumed she knew I missed my son and was filling the gap. That was partly true. One night she recalled the suitcase ticket and revealed that she had been waiting ever since for her own suitcase! I almost fell over! A couple of months ago my wife and I put the plans in place for daughter’s ticket. She is a Med student and was planning to take this weekend off from her busy schedule. So we bought the tickets…and the suitcase! Tonight she will be sitting in The Desjardins section with son, both wearing their Habs colours. Her first live game! I will be watching tonight…bit I am already tearing up… Just wish I was there. BTW…her team in a hockey pool is the “Weiss Guys”. She is currently in first place. I agree that we have an ability to shrug things off and move on. But I fear that was ingrained from generations of our forefathers who survived a tough existence. The “kids” who have jetted back and forth to Alberta oil jobs in this generation have largely no knowledge of that past. "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)

Hey Jocko! I am also from a small NL community. And I too am proud to say that! But as you are suggesting there are “some” who use the term as an insult or in other cases like the name for a pet. As a Newfoundlander you understand it. And of course you would be aware of the (in)appropriate use of the terms “bayman” and “townie” as well. What slang terms for people from other parts of the country are used here? "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)

Sportsnet playing fiddles for the Leafs complete with player and coach interviews, MC D highlights, and draft chances. But no highlights from Hab game. :) "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)

It’s not simple. Some Newfoundlanders embrace the term while others detest it. But in my experience few non Newfoundlanders use the term with respect. "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)
