Button gets it. Mckenzie too. I'm in WPG..where Garry Lawless works quite hard to stay on top of things/sharp guy.

PK says he received an education during "the process." Me too. I learned that most of the media, despite it being their job to know, don't really understand that much about the nuts and bolts of the NHL business. Some of them are piss poor at their jobs. Many fans still can't understand the value tradeoffs necessitated by the cap..the same can be said for many members of the media. Even less fans understand the CBA and free agency as it relates to the cap...the same can be said for the many members of the media. A lot of them discuss these issues at the level of ignorant fans. This may be because they like to whip up drama while maintaining a vacuum of information, but I would guess its just too complicated for a lot of them.

Wonder how this played out. Did they just run out of time to get this done before the arbitration hearing? or: Was PK holding out for more than the Habs were willing to pay and then they started to realize that if they signed him to the one year deal it would be a huge distraction for the upcoming season? I guess the Habs got the term length they wanted for the dollars PK wanted. Don't really care because I think it is a win win. I can't really argue that this isn't the money the market dictates for his contribution. There are players getting more and doing less. Those that say he shouldn't get more than Doughty are out to lunch. Timing is everything and Doughty's contract is irrelevant...just ask Duncan Keith. Atleast least the Habs avoided a bad situation and I think if they have to they can still move him if it goes south.

He skates a lot better than PK.

I thought the same Ian. But I was and you are, thinking old school. Every team needs some wow factor. The Habs are going to be a bunch of average guys with out PK. His value helps the team attract other players, makes the players on his own team believe and his performance is on par with the top players. That adds up to 10 million not 6 million in today's market. If this is really about money, the Habs need to look around at all the kids with Subban jerseys.

I agree. And Price will have to understand that he is not a gregarious, defenceman, with appeal to many both inside and outside the hockey community. He's riding horses back on the ranch while PK is selling the CH worldwide.

I always assumed a deal would be done and never really looked at the situation with any depth. I tended to side with the camp calling for MB to hold the line (if that is what in fact is happening. Maybe PK is holding out for a short deal to get himself out of Dodge). Today, as a long term deal seems in doubt, I took the time to look at PK's performance and did a 180 degree turn: the guy deserves top dollars and I could argue that he deserves considerably more than Price gets. His numbers are league leading, his playoffs are great, and he is the face of the franchise. He does more to drive the outcome of games than many of the leagues designated superstars. Other teams hate this guy plus he will have the Habs front and center with Stroumboulopoulos for years to come. The Habs seem to be caught in some old school mentality that doesn't fly in the new marketing era.

Lots of them.

I can respect what the Habs are doing. No one is bigger than the team. Everyone keeps talking about how the Habs have damaged their relationship with PK. Maybe PK has damaged his relationship with the Habs. From what I see, I like PK, but in trying to understand why he is not signed I can also see how his roadshow could be tough to deal with and possibly a team cancer. I can also see that many fans and many in the media really don't really know that much about hockey. For example: it is often said that PK is a great skater. I would say his skating is very inefficient for a 8 million dollar player. One of his biggest assets is a bomb from the point. New stick technologies mean that a lot of guys have bombs from the point. I also notice that most of his entourage walking with him into the arbitrage meeting was made up of men taller in stature. Everyone wants big defensemen..PK is not.
