- Comment on Brière agrees to two-year deal with Canadiens (2013-07-04 18:06:42)
Despite all the complaints on this message board, no one can argue this is an upgrade on Ryder. He might be small, but he fits in much better with our teams style of play. He's fast and skilled. Yes, he's old and his skills are declining, but he's still better than Ryder. Which means our team will be better next year. Will we win the cup? Probably not. But it will be fun to see Brier in a Habs uniform, and the fact it's only a 2 year deal means we're not committing long term money to a question mark. And we still have 5 mil left to sign a tough 3/4 line winger and a depth defenseman.

RE: Possible work stoppage. Does anyone know what happens to player contracts in the event of a work stoppage? For example, if the NHL loses a year to a labour dispute, does that take a year off of Gomez's contract?

taking a little break from work and musing about Habs needs. Irrespective of who the Habs draft and which (if any) prospects make the team in 2012-13, the Habs need to add 2 top-6 wingers and 2 top-4 D-men. Presuming they find a way to move and/or dump Gomez, Bourque and Kaberle, this would be the core of next year's team. Desharnais - Cole - Patches Pleks - New Winger 1 - New Winger 2 Eller - Gionta - Leblanc White - Moen - Darche Subban - Gorges New D#1 - New D#2 Markov - Emelin Price - Budaj Reserves: Geoffrion, Staubitz, Diaz, St. Denis
- Comment on Fractured vertebra for Pacioretty (2011-03-09 13:37:57)
I think that Boston should be forced to forfeit their upcoming 1st round draft pick as compensation for damage to Max Pac's career. Player suspensions have clearly not worked to deter these kinds of incidents. Maybe if the team is punished, coaches, GMs and owners will put more pressure on their own players to clean up their act.

so what's our D with Hammer out tonight?
spactch - weber
wiz - gill
subban - picard
as much as i like weber and subban and can tolerate picard, none of the three replace either hammer or gorges.
my real worry though is even when hammer is back, wiz, weber and subban are all offensive d-men. Price is going to have to be on his game for the rest of the season.

Thank god we picked up Brett Festerling... (sarcasm)

how about trying to sign Modano as a third line center? would probably be better than Moore and cost around the same. maybe 1.5 mil. assuming he's still got a little juice in the tank, he could be a really good fit and could fill in on the top two lines in case of injury. on a 1 year deal, there'd be no risk, and he'd bring a ton of leadership and experience.

so, we've signed Pleks and Darche. Traded Halak for Eller and Shultz. So what's are team going to look like?
Gomez - Gionta - ??Pouliot??
Pleks - Cammalleri - Kostitsyn
Eller - Moen - ??Lapierre??
??Maxwell?? - Darche - ??Pyatt?? - ??White??
I guess we'll re-sign Pyatt, Lapierre & Pouliot, which will leave one more spot in the line-up and a reserve spot for Pacioretty, Maxwell, and White.
That's assuming we don't re-sign Moore, which now seems unlikely given the cap situation. And it's also assuming we trade Sergei, which seems very likely.
The only real wild card i can imagine is if we find another team interested in Andrei K. Doesn't seem likely, but another team might be interested in the brothers as a pair, and that could open up a spot for another quality winger.
on D, we're set with 7 D-men signed and Weber available as an 8th dman.
In Goal, we'll probably sign a cheap veteran back-up.
so... we have pretty much the same team up front, and pretty much the same team on D. The big question will be how Price responds in goal. Presumably the team will also be a little tighter after a good playoff run and also more comfortable with the Martin system. The young guys will have developed a little more.
All in all, probably a wash compared to last year, but there is still plenty of time between now and mid-July, and something unexpected could always happen.
