I'm not sure why people are so angry with Gauthier. I'm not clear where he's done a horrible job. I'm not saying he's lighting the world on fire, but my biggest complaint about him would have been that he was sticking with Martin even though it's clear he's a terrible HC. The move for Wiz was the right one. He signed Cole who has been great. Signed Diaz and got Emelin over finally. The Kaberle move is undecided, but he's been worth it so far. remains to be seen. Same with the risky Markov move. The only major complaint I have is that he didn't lock up Gorges for longer. But if he gets Josh signed long term as well as ensuring the future with the young guys, overall i think he's done ok. He may need to make some moves around Gomez and a few others to say he's doing "good" but i am giving him some more rope since he finally wised up to the Martin thing.

Had to log back in and post just for this. I saw this just now as i got back from the gym (funny it wasn't on tsn while i was there) and just about jumped through the ceiling. FINALLY. Just a SHAME that Muller AND Boucher have both moved on. Giving Cunneyworth the rest of a year that is far from over seems almost like a financial move. I'm Ok with it, but i do wonder if the fact that they will have to pay Martin to sit at home has something to do with them not bringing anyone in. Cheapness is not something I'd often accuse the Habs of though. Not their MO really.

Poor Jack. Still can't get through a column without a backhanded remark at Carey Price. Also, I wouldn't put much stock in a report from thefourthperiod.com

Post-Mortem on the season: Hats off to our team that showed a lot of guts and fought hard through adversity, injury and bad luck all year. However, a lot of lessons were learned about this team this year both positive and negative of course. Might as well start with the negatives, since I’m not in the best of moods to have no more Habs games for some 5 long months. The D needs to get younger and more mobile. Hammer has battled hard but his age and mobility work against him and it’s time to move on. Sopel has been good as a rental for the PK, but I can’t imagine him being kept around past this year. Same goes for Mara. I’d like to see Gill kept around with less of a burden being placed on him for his leadership and PK. But he needs far less ice time at this point of his career. Spacek is the major issue that needs dealing with. His game is inconsistent and he has no desire to get dirty in front of the net or in the corners anymore. He’s slow to move the puck and his clearings are often timid and weak. He’s just not getting it done with anymore. But at 3+ mill on a deal you can’t buyout and probably can’t trade… what to do? Up front Pouliot might as well pack his bags right now. He’s done. I’m also tempted to say the same about the maddening Andrei Kostitsyn. I can’t take his nonchalance and inconsistency anymore. I can’t imagine committing to him long term. Speaking of long term… How much longer will we have to deal with Gomez? I know he’s got 3 years left… but seriously… What do you do with the guy if he plays another year like this one? The Habs biggest issue is an inability to handle physical teams. Eller and Patches are a start to fixing that, But with Plek as you #1 C, can you live with someone as small and soft as Gomez as the #2? The guy isn’t good defensively anymore, and his bad penalties and blind passes to no one are killing the team. I can’t see the Habs burying him in Hamilton, but I just hope to god they find someone to take his and his last 2 seasons at lower money by the trade deadline next year. Also as a negative-positive, I am sure Kirk Muller will be moving on to become a HC somewhere. My hat is off to him and he deserves it, but he will be sorely missed. So many pluses this year though, First and foremost: CAREY PRICE. Every night this guy plays you have a chance to win. He was fantastic and made PG look brilliant in keeping the faith. Subban has progressed into an elite Dman. He still has things to learn, but his future is every bit as bright as Carey’s. Greatly exciting to think of PK and Carey being the anchor of this team for a long time. Eller, Desharnais, White, Weber, Pacioretty… a lot of the young guys got a lot of experience and sure do look to be like winners. There’s a lot of guys with a good future to build around that were given a lot of great NHL experience for various reasons. Wiz looks like a find as well. He might be the best in season acquisition the Habs have pulled off in recent memory. Hopefully they will find a way to keep him on a long term basis. Cammy, Gionta, Pleks…. All played well despite injuries too. Hats off to the grinders too like Moen, Pyatt, Halpern, and especially Darche who gave 110% and contributed in their own ways. A healthy team next year and maybe a new face on D and things are looking good. The Habs will need to find a top 6 Forward though. Kostityn and Pouliot aren’t it. Eller might be in time but isn’t there yet. Cammy-Plek-??? Gionta-Gomez-Pacioretty Desharnais-Eller-Darche Pyatt-Halpern-White/Moen Markov-Subban Wiz-Gorges Weber-Gill Price That team looks good to me….. Proud of the boys for fighting though all the adversity and giving us fans a heck of a memorable year. GO HABS GO!

What has AK done to warrant staying on that line? Besides... Eller has gooten good ice time, and AK had a fire under him when they last played together. White is only there to give that line a digger.

Nervously awaiting tonights game.... I'm still not sure what to make of Jaques Martin. I often find he's too rigid and stubborn with his system. It does work well at tiems whn played correctly, but there are times when you need to be flexable and it doen't seem he can bring himself to make a change. I also get tired of his "veteran" rules and refusal to sit someone who is struggling. At some point in this series it was time to give Mara a start over Spacek. But it won't happen. I also don't expect there will be any motivational speeches coming from him to get the team amped up.... Why is Pyatt centering the 4th line when Halpern should be? The lines should be: White-Plek-Cammy Darche-Gomez-Gionta AK-Eller-Weber Pyatt-Halpern-Moen At least IMO. Darche has shown better hands and more net presence than Moen. But Moen could make for a nice defensive/evenergy line if he was with Pyatt and Halpern. I know White on the first line won't happen, but i think AK needs to drop to the 3rd line due to his lazy backchecking. PLus he seemed to click with Eller anyway. White would bring more energy to the first line and give them someone more willing to get their hands dirty. I don't think Jacques trusts him defenisvely enough to be in play in the matchup against the Krejci line though. Weber also NEEDS to play. If Wiz is out it's an absolute no brainer. But the 2nd PP wave needs him on the point. Spacek is useless back there. I personally prefer him to play 4th line wing on his more regular instead of trying to have him match the Bruins size on D. I go with Mara on D if Wiz misses, Weber on the wing to replace DD. Again... imagine if we were healthy: DD, Patches, Markov, Gorges.... I know you could argue we wouldn't have Sopel or Wiz... but still.... Markov-Gorges Subban-Gill Wiz-Hammer Spacek That's a darn good D. Anyway... there are mroe than enough guys on this team with experience to know what tonight means and what you have to do to win. Gomez, Pleks, Gionta, Cammy.... They have to have their best games of the year. Now or never.
- Comment on About last night … (2011-04-19 11:53:03)
Haven't commented in a while but last night has drug me back onto the soap box. I, for one, have seen enough of the Benoit Pouliot experiment. For all that enticing talent, there's no brains and no balance. It's time for him to take a seat in the pressbox. Weber needs to be in there. He scored a huge goal in game 2, plus he prevents us from having to have the second PP pairing of Spatcho and Hammer. Speaking of Spatcho... Can we go back to Mara? Though somewhat less mobile, I find Mara better able to handle the forecheck and size of the Bruins, whereas Spatcho looks skittish. His offensive game set sail 2 years ago and his D is ok at best. I think Mara is better suited to play the Bruins, but i get the feeling Martin will refuse to sit Spacek due to his usual dedication tos ticking with Vets no matter how bad they struggle. The worst part is, Spacek has a good excuse as he's only been back a few weeks from a long layoff, which is sure to have left some rust on his already rusting game. That being said, I felt other than some bad luck/bad idea on the part of Price (who was probably due to be a bit off) and a lack of energy in the first 30 minutes, the Habs actually came back with some excellent push. If that was the absolute best game the Bruins can throw at us (and I really think it was) then the Habs are in a good position. Even sleepwalking for half the game and a sub-par game from the cowboy goalie and they STILL almost found a way to pull it out. I'm headed to Montreal tomorrow (hopefully not through a terrible late spring winter storm it seems) for the Rush/Game 4 combo. I want to hear the Bell ROCKING! I also think Boone owes me a beer for watching the blog videos that scare my kids and dog. ;)
