So it's "still early" in the 2014-15 season but how do you like your Colorado Avalanche now? Sure they've won two in a row, but they are still below .500 and no where near a playoff position. Maybe Roy doesn't have the Midas touch. Maybe their goalie wasn't worth a first round draft pick that ended up being used to select Filip Forsberg. Maybe it's the Briere effect... Who knows!? I agree with you wholeheartedly on the Oilers rushing their top prospects, but given their roster I don't think they had a choice. They didn't have anyone in their system ready to jump in and their penny-pinching ways didn't give them the opportunity to sign any big free-agents or warm bodies to fill the roster. I also think that Nugent-Hopkins is developing nicely. Of course in hindsight, the Oilers could have picked up Landeskog or even Huberdeau instead, but I doubt either would have faired better with the organization. He's only a couple of big games away from being among the top 5 defensemen in scoring and I believe he leads our team in minutes played in almost every game. So yes he's off to a slow start but with back-to-back games with the Sabres, plus a long homestand before the end of the year, a lot can change. Plus every analyst on NHL.com with the exception of Kevin Weeks predict a Subban/Karlsson pairing. Not to mention I'd rather have Subban giving great on-ice interviews and sound bites than the likes of Kris Letang or Johnny Boychuk. The All-Star game is more about the fan experience than who's the best. That is reserved for the annual NHL awards. "There's genius everywhere, but until they turn pro, it's like popcorn in the pan. About the author: Kevin McGran covers the Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL for the Toronto Star. And Shakespeare didn't write those plays. You can contact him at 416-869-4259. You think Washington would want a mulligan on the Filip "no relation to Peter" Forsberg trade? Leads the league in plus/minus and voted third star of the week. I didn't think we'd tank as bad as we did and I was kinda hoping the Habs would have drafted him. Definitely the early candidate for the Calder. • Comment on Habs trade Travis Moen to Dallas for Sergei Gonchar (2014-11-11 16:23:11)
Only in Montreal do we over analyse a trade between a fourth-liner and a third pairing defenseman. People, take it all in stride. Moen was playing like 10 minutes a game, give or take how often the PK unit is out there. With Moen gone, we can develop other players to step into the PK role like Weise or Glachenyuk. As for Gonchar, he's gonna get third pairing duties. He's a veteran with over 1000 games under his belt and a Cup ring. He's not gonna play 20+ minutes a game. He'll play on the PP where we desperately need help. He'll be a good mentor for the kids. Remember, NHL defensemen take the longest time to develop of any position. Beaulieu and Tinordi are 21 and 22 years old. Not every kid we draft is a Hedman or a Doughty that will step in and be a difference maker in their teens. Finally, this frees up some cap room at the end of the season which I predict will be a big one where we sign Galchenyuk and Gallagher for big contracts. Relax people...
