Steve, you're certainly not a fool, your analysis is interesting and you often make excellent points. For what it's worth, I happen to agree with you the our top line isn't getting it done -- though I'm not sure Weise is the player I'd add there on RW. Regardless though, if the responses to your posts are sometimes disproportionately hostile, it's at least partially because your posts themselves often come off as abrasive and confrontational. Anyway, keep up the posts, and even better if you can turn the vitriol down a couple of notches -- I don't always agree, but I almost always read them. -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. I think this is the right approach -- Sekac and DSP are both 22, and they have 18 and 17 pts this year, respectively. One might become a better sniper over time, the other might become a better power forward, or they may both stagnate and come to nothing. It's a gamble for sure, but I'd argue that Montreal needs a potential power forward more than a potential sniper, and vice-versa for Anaheim. That's why the trade happened. -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. Dano has only two teeth left, so you can't say that to Dano." -Jacques Lemaire

Welcome! And a solid first post. I agree with all your assessments -- particularly that Moen + Sekac is probably more valuable than DSP + Gonchar. But honestly, we don't have all the info that a GM or coach does, and we have to give them the benefit of the doubt that you mention -- and that they have indeed earned these last few years in Montreal. Surely they see all the pros and cons we do, and if MB decides to pull the trigger, we can only assume there's a reason for it, given his track record of making iterative improvements for long-term gain. Maybe he thinks a 22-year-old DSP has a higher ceiling than he gets credit for, and can turn into a consistent 20-goal power forward. Maybe he just couldn't justify Moen's $1.75M salary next year, given the shrinking cap expectations and the need to re-sign Galchenyuk and add a top-six winger. Maybe Therrien couldn't stand Sekac and MB was unwilling to micromanage MT's player usage, and lobby for more ice time for a kid who frankly had shown some flashes but hadn't really astounded anyone in 50-odd games. Maybe some combination of these things. Either way, the team is doing extremely well by any measure. It's hard to pile onto the GM and coach when that's the case. -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. Vermette's a pretty good player, but if he were a Hab it wouldn't take a week before people were complaining that he's not top-six material. -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. Dano has only two teeth left, so you can't say that to Dano." -Jacques Lemaire

You're right, Emelin was good against Boston and in the playoffs overall. I don't dislike him, but of the 8 D-men on the roster, he may be the most error-prone, especially as Beaulieu seems to be settling down. -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. One straightforward improvement the Habs can make to generate offence: get DD to shoot more, even if that means putting him back on the wing. At 15.3%, he's got the highest shooting % on the team (aside from Andrighetto and DLR who've played just a few games). But he's tied for ninth in SoG, one shot ahead of noted sniper Brandon Prust. And his shooting % isn't an aberration this year -- in the last four years he's shot 14.6%, 16.3%, 15.2% and 16.7%, in a league where the average is about 10%. Some guy once said you miss 100% of the shots you don't take -- Therrien should hammer home to him that he's expected to shoot too, not just pass. -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. He earned it by impressing from his first shift, playing rock-solid defensively, hitting everything that moves, forechecking and backchecking like a beast, and exemplifying the system the coach wants them to play, especially in a third-line role. Eller was doing much of that, but less well, and so Eller gets a promotion to the second line to see if he fits that role better. That's not a punishment, it's asset management. Fair enough re: the two Sabres -- worth noting though that they also play the wing, and you can never have to many guys who can credibly play centre if need be. -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. I actually really liked what Pateryn brought -- in an admittedly small sample size of games, he seemed physical, in position, and more solid defensively than Gilbert or Emelin, at least to my untrained eye. He also brings some offence to the Bulldogs, and might develop a bit of that with the big club (wouldn't be hard to match Gilbert or Emelin's offensive production). -- "Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out.
