Couple of cents from the peanut gallery: 1. Great win last night. I really liked how Blunden stood up for Bourque when Rangers players went after Bourque. I remember years ago when a Sabre went after Theodore and no Habs did anything except Doug Gilmour who tried to take out the Sabres knees. 2. Nice to see Gomez get a point but he has been lousy for 2 years and it's time to trade or send him to the minors. The Rangers did it with Redden and we can do it with Gomez. That trade has to be as bad as the Chelios, Claude Lemieux and Roy trades. 3. The Camalleri trade can't really be assessed until after some time but on its merits so far, I think it's what we needed. Camalleri has an ego and seems to have upset a lot of people in the locker room. Sometimes addition but subtraction is a good thing. I do like that we got some cap space because we'll need it to resign Price and Subban. 4. I don't think we'll make the playoffs but I would like to see us start a youth movement where we build our team. Start trading away older veterans for picks and prospects and develop them. And please get a coach who can stick with them for a few years. Or least a solid assistant coach who serves in same capacity of training our defence like Jacques Lapperiere did for years (i.e. Larry Robinson)
  • Comment on Barch suspended one game for shot at P.K. (2012-01-06 00:00:07)
Couple of cents from the peanut gallery: 1 - I think the suspension was appropriate because racism has no place in our game. I've played hockey and I'm cool with trash talk. But I draw the line at racism. You have no idea what it feels like when it's directed at you. Using that kind of hateful language as an edge on opponents is just like using steroids for an edge - it's wrong. 2 - And for those who say it's PC (political correctness) run amok - I wonder how many are black or a visible minority and had a racial slur uttered at them? Just curious as it does make a difference. Furthermore just because other blacks such as rappers drop the N-word doesn't make racism right and it's just a reprehensible. 3 - If it's unacceptable to throw a banana at a black player on the ice (what happened in London, Ontario recently) then asking a black player if they slipped on one is the same thing. It's not semantics. 4 - I would never accuse Barch of being racist as I've heard good people say stupid things and regret it afterwards. It was careless and ignorant. And there are consequences to words just like your actions such as unintentionally high-sticking someone and getting slapped with 4 minutes. In this case it was 1 game for Barch. 5 - Barch admitted he said it so time to move on. I'm glad the NHL is taking a stand as I've been to soccer games in Europe where black players have fans making monkey chants at them. It's disgusting and we are better than that as a society. Some sports/club venues (in Canada) used to have signs that said "No dogs or Jews allowed". That was viewed as being okay so looked how far we've come. 6. My point is that we all need to stand up and speak out against injustice. Even when we feel uncomfortable. And I'm glad that the linesman did it. And the NHL did it as well.
  • Comment on HIO at practice: Fight! (2012-01-02 10:21:51)
Couple of cents from the peanut gallery: 1. Never underestimate the value of leadership on a team. Gorges was an underdog who worked his tail off to get to where he is. He reminds me of one of my favorite Habs: Brian Skrudland. Works his tail off and can look anyone in the eye who doesn't. 2. When I look back at where the decline of the team started it was after Serge Savard was fired by Ronald Corey who panicked. We then over time let all the leaders in the lockeroom go. Guys like Chelios, Desjardins, Carbooneau, Keane, Muller, Odelein. Guys who wanted to be in Montreal and who were proud to play here. It's time we had leaders back in our lockeroom. Gorges is one of those kinds of guys. 3. Georges isn't going to win the Norris but you look at other Habs defence men over the years who made a difference. Guys like Craig Ludwig who made a difference. We could have signed Gorges for less last year but we weren't sure about his knee. The fact that he stayed here means there is hope to keep Price and Subban. Get rid of some veterans by trade and others by demotion to AHL (Gomez) if they don't perform. 4. This team is not going to make the playoffs - and if they do - they will get wiped out in the first round provided that Markov, Gomez, Gionta all come back, play well and we don't suffer any more injuries. I'm tired of scrambling for 8th place. We need to be patient, build and invest. Detroit did it. Chicago did it. Edmonton is doing it. Why should Montreal be different? 5. We need to get full time scouting in Quebec. We need to get better coaches behind the bench to focus on the defence (Larry Robinson said he wanted to come back), the special units (Kirk Muller's role) and player development so we don't continue to draft great prospects and then lose them or don't help them reach their potential (Kostitsyn, McDonough and the list goes on). If Cunneyworth learns some french and does a decent job keep him. He has experience developing young players. 6. I've been one demanding that Gauthier be fired but perhaps we should wait. This team needs continuity and stability. So either we commit to him to blow the whole thing up (again) or get someone new to do it. But either way a rebuild is necessary and I'm glad Gorges will be part of it. Happy New Year everyone...

You want to keep Pierre Gauthier? I'd rather get rid of him and keep Trevor Timmins who drafted all of the pieces of that foundation. But I suspect we'll agree to disagree mon ami.

    (1) If we didn't have Price in nets I suspect our performance would be a lot worse this year. Subban will rebound as he's young and the same for Pacioretty and Eller. The rest are unproven but there is a core to build around. (2) I think Andre Savard was a good GM and he drafted some other good players such as Komisarek, Higgins and Halak. The players didn't turn out great later but were promising the beginning. He also made trades such as Zednik, Bullis and 1st R (Perezhogin) to Washington for Linden and Zubrus. But if you have another suggestion for GM - I'd love to hear it.

    (1) Why? (2) Who do you suggest instead?

Couple of cents from the peanut gallery: (1) We have a foundation to build on - with Price in nets, Subban, Emelin, Gorges, Beaulieu, Diaz, Tinordi and then LeBlanc, Bournival, Gallagher, Pacioretty, Desharnais, Eller up front. (2) Get rid of Pierre Gauthier and bring back Andre Savard as General Manager. Savard did a better job than Gainey and Gauthier. He knows how to draft properly, trade and develop young talent. Gauthier is operating scared and making decisions to save his job. (3) Once you have a good general manager in place, get rid of the veterans by or before the trade deadline for picks and prospects and clear salary cap space if you can get any takers for Gomez, Gill, Kaberle, Gionta and Camalleri. They are good players but our team needs a complete overhaul. I don't mention Markov as I feel he won't play hockey again. (4) Then get a a good coach who can work with young talent. Bring Larry Robinson in as a coach or assistant coach but our defencemen need a steady hand and Randy Ladouceur is not it. I can't evaluate Cunneyworth as he doesn't have much to work with and hasn't coached enough. Sadly, I don't think he'll be around next year. (5) I'm tired of the team making the playoffs but the skin of their team and sitting in mediocrity. Time to blow up the team and wait 5 years. Although the team lost - it was nice watching and blogging a game with everyone here. It's been too long. :)

I understand people are upset with Price tonight but he can't dance on his head every single night. The team in front of him isn't very good.

Keep playing even when whistle blows Les Boys. Different set of rules for you. All starting with the BS goal that let Tampa back in the game.
