- Comment on Sabres vs. Habs preview: Price named NHL’s first star of the week; de la Rose called up from Hamilton (2015-02-03 00:03:41)
Marc - you overlook the fact that Eller created the 3 on 1 to begin with during a PENALTY KILL. That is a huge net positive and a guy doing exactly what his role requires him to do. Also, a few shifts later, Plekanec and Pacioretty had a 2 on 1 and didn't manage to get a shot off. I don't think any questions their offensive confidence. Dale Weise somehow had a 2on1 during the 6on5 against Arizona and is too slow and unskilled to even keep it at a 2on1. You sound like the narrow-minded Eller critics who don't get that hockey is more than just stats on a scoresheet. The team wins back-to-back 1-0 hockey games, and he's our defensive center these days. Did you even notice Backstrom in the caps game? I didn't. Oh, but Eller's hibernating? The guy contributes even when he's not producing.

I can say plenty of good about Therrien. Just like you, I don't "like" him, but I'm not calling for his head. Maybe re-read what I wrote before implying "narrow-mindedness." My problem is the reactionary nature of this column. We won a 1-0 game that could've gone either way. I don't think this was the shining example of how ready the troops were leading to fearless predictions of how ready we're going to be this weekend.

Unfortunately, hockey lineups are of a zero-sum nature. You can't start two goalies. You can't play 5 centers. My gripe is that Eller gets insulted twice in this article for no reason. He consistently gets put down in this column. Eller's production is never going to wow anyone as long as he's below DD on the depth chart. So, it's not an HIO constant...it's a reality. He doesn't see the PP. He doesn't get to play with 2 offensive wingers. DD gets that opportunity instead. And as for Jaro v. Price. I guess we really made the wrong call there, amirite?!

Honestly, I don't know why I still read this blog. Maybe because it's the only one that posts a comprehensive analysis the night of a game (EOTP doesn't do it until the night after). Boone, you consistently like to point out any flaw in Eller's game. Oh! Vinnie Damphousse says Dale Weise has more offensive awareness?! What a random, irrelevant and unsubstantiated observation from the former captain. Eller is playing DIRTY minutes and doing a fantastic job. Cut the guy some slack. Our top line looks terrible with 22. The winning goal was a fluke. They've sustained 0 pressure. Need a real winger on that line. Weise, just like Prust, is a great 4th liner who can step up from time to time on a higher line. Our current 4th line is terrible. Your fearless prediction on the team being ready for the weekend...PLEASE address this prediction if you're wrong 3 days from now. You won't. Don't worry, Price will probably save the day as always. Bottom line. We scored a pathetic goal to win this game. We "outshot" the Rangers, but they had more quality chances and looked like the better team. End of the day, our best player is our goalie, which means he shines when we tend to fail. No one lauds a goalie for an 18-save performance in a 4-1 victory. Price being in the running for the Hart is a bad sign for the caliber of play of this team. There are a lot of bright spots: Beaulieu, PK and Markov on D. Gallagher, Patches, Chucky, the ever-consistent Plekanec (who you criticized for not being a top 6 center a few weeks ago, what a joke), Sekac and Eller. Those are our top 6 forwards. You defend Desharnais any chance you get, but the guy is soft as hell and cannot produce at all if not given every chance to succeed. The fact he plays in 4man situations over 27 is a travesty. I'm sure we'll see him back with 67 eventually, which will be the death of this season, unfortunately. I don't mean to be a downer. There are a lot of things I like about this team, but I'm not going to hop on a Therrien bandwagon after winning a 1-0 road game where our goalie was the 1st star and their goalie (the 2nd star) let in a dinky wrist shot from the blue line. Also, the refs were weird. What the hell with the calls on PK??!

I don't quite understand why Boone always needs to single out DD for praise. The guy had 2 pts on a 6 game road trip. It's really not that impressive. He makes the odd good play when he has the puck in space, but if you really really watch him out there, he loses most battles, can't take a pass and is incredibly soft when playing without the puck. Another thing - through 29 games, the Canadiens had a -2 goal differential. In the last 10, we are 9-1 with a +21 goal differential. That 29th game was a 3-1 loss to the Dallas Stars that resulted in Alex Galchenyuk becoming our #1 center. JUST SAYING - my biggest problem with DD has always been his opportunity cost. There are better players on this team that could do more with his minutes.

Seriously. God forbid Boone just admit DD isn't a top 6. Let's drag Plek into this as well. A guy who does absolutely everything asked of him, plays with anyone, doesn't get sheltered and still puts up solid #2 center numbers. This is why I stopped reading this stupid segment. Just wanted to see if he'd finally say something different about DD now that MT finally took him off top line.

Well said. DD is abysmal. 6 pts in 14 games as your #1 center on the top PP unit. That is pathetic. And yet, people still criticize Eller non-stop. We've seen the best DD can offer - and it's not very good. 50 pts from a #1 center is a joke. And, he's not even performing at that level right now.

Why does it need to be a "duo"? Every other forward has played with two unique linemates (ignoring the 4th line).

Weise joins the "on the No. 1 line with David Desharnais and Max Pacioretty." WHAT A JOKE.

Rogieshan - don't understand how you can insult 14. Couldn't agree with Timo's list more, except for #6. If we someone could get off this ridiculous DD bandwagon and let 27 and 81 get confidence as our centers, we could be solid.
