The Canadiens won a lot of those cups when there were only six teams or expansion teams to destroy... I'm hoping for a cup too but people need to be realistic. This was a reasonable run against a very skilled, very brutal opponent after we limped into the playoffs short at least 2, maybe 3 of our best players. I hope that 95% of this team comes back, Gomez included, and that no changes are made behind the bench. We have some great prospects, we'll lose a few contracts, maybe sign a scorer or a big winger, and be good to go. Mark my words, the GM will not shuffle the deck this summer. A few players will leave but the core stays together. Intelligence, finesse, creativity and talent versus brutality, violence, money and a knuckle-dragger's version of masculinity.

He's a racist, red neck old man with a government paycheque that we supply. It's fun to have the hockey controversy and colourful commentary on HNC but I don't appreciate our national broadcaster giving airtime to a closetted warmongering racist in a clown outfit. Reel him in to focus on hockey or set him loose. If Subban was a white player there would be no talk of "disrespect." A white Subban would be referred to as, "A good Canadian lad, tough in the corners, not afraid to drop em, plays hurt, sacrifices the body..." and all the other garbage that Cherry and the equally xenophobic boneheads on TSN love to throw around. Tell me former Soviet Block players like Hamrlik and Spacek aren't tough as nails compared to upper middle class silver spoon sucking Canadians like Richards and Crosby. Think of Sergei as a sports car engine that the Canadiens bought in a mystery sale. They weren't sure what they had but they knew that it was fancy, fast and that not every mechanic could fix it if it broke down. Unfortunately the car Bob Gainey built required a different engine and the mechanic he hired didn't have time to tinker away for more than a season on Sergei. Not every team will be a great fit for a good player and the Canadiens seem like a nightmare in so many ways... just ask Cary Price, Mike Robeiro, Scott Gomez or Breezer. Great players that didn't or haven't always fit the system. Good for Sergei, too bad he couldn't make it work in Montreal... some might say the system failed him and others that he failed the system. Either way, I bet we're all better off that he's playing elsewhere. Sergei aside, is the system flawed? I'd say not. The team has over achieved under very difficult circumstances all season. These injuries are heart breaking... Josh Jorges, for example would have added a level of poise to tonight's game that was painfully lacking. You can't build a race car, replace many of the main components with lesser ones and expect it's going set records in the home stretch. That would run contrary to logic or common sense. That this team has done as well as it has for so long and without major breakdowns (like the ones we saw this week) is a testament to the abilities of the coach and the other people driving this forward. The home stretch might get ugly and there's no guarantee they make the playoffs... but if they can stumble their way in I have a feeling we'll see a fresh start and new momentum for the post-season. Maybe not a cup winner but what can we expect from a team that has lost so many great players to injury? Again with the common sense. Don't hang back with the brutes my friend. Fear of assault or bludgeoning, a blindside Cooke elbow to the face... these fears suck the artistry from the game. Brutality is for chimps and cavemen... maybe bullfighters and prison guards too. It's a close to religion as some of us get. When a game is on I feel connected to something larger than myself and difficult to understand. This is the beauty of the Montreal Canadiens. Much more powerful than any player or even any given Habs team... the mystique and history bring me back her day after day much more so than 'sportsmanship'. I agree with everything else you're saying though, that's some level headed stuff.
