That's mainly true and you'll see that cycle with most teams (notably the Penguins and Blackhawks), but not all of them. The Red Wings have been an elite team for a long time, and transitioned seamlessly from the Federov, Shanahan, Yzerman years to the Datsyuk, Zetterberk, Franzen years. Maybe we can plant trees without burning down the forest?

.500 means equal number of wins and losses, and has the nice property of equal number of games played and points. .500 means you have 500/1000 -> 50% of available points. If we start considering OT losses as losses, it will break the stat and everything will be ruined forever.
