HI/O Show: Setting the stage for Habs vs. Bruins

The Canadiens and Boston Bruins will square off for the 34th time in the NHL playoffs and the bad blood was already flowing before Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

In a Boston Herald column, Stephen Harris described the Canadiens’ P.K. Subban as “despicably villainous” and teammate Alexei Emelin as “a dangerous foe” and “a guy who may be trying deliberately to hurt people.”

“Do we need this crap?” columnist Jack Todd says on this week’s HI/O Show.

Todd is joined by Mike Boone — who live blogs every Canadiens game on HI/O — and sports editor/host Stu Cowan to set the stage for the much-anticipated series and give their predictions.

The Canadiens have won 24 of the first 33 series between the teams, but Boston has won seven of the last 11 playoff meetings, including the last two.

      So this is the thing I don’t understand and I say this as someone picking for the flyers strictly for pool purposes ( oh oh Karma strikes Pouliot just scored ) so why did he get the penalty . I get it protect the goalie and as an ex rent a goalie all for it but yesterday same thing and at least they called both teams no consistently in the calls and of course we all know they said it was crap call for incidental contact for price but that wasn’t a penalty right just a disallowed goal…

    Dominic Moore nominated today for the Masterton trophy illustrates very well that those trophies are not worth that much in the grand scheme of things. If winning it can bring a bit of closure for his tragic loss then it would be the most usefull trophy ever !

    The New York’s best players better bring it or their season is going to end in about another 40 minutes. Nash looks revved up but Richards, St Louis, Girardi and McDonagh are going to have to step it up a notch.

    Lundqvist and Mason have been solid so far.

    Funny i can not stand the Leafs,, but I find it very hard to dis like the Toronto Raptors, a young hard working tight team,with a warrior like Kyle Lowry, playing against the truly hate-able Kevin Garnett and the high spending Mikhail Prokhorov Brooklyn Nets.

    Here is my opinion on why PK is given such a hard time!

    He is very much like a kid named Crosby was his first few years in the league. Always chirping and complaining when he got a penalty, shrugging his shoulders and rolling his eyes, instead of just going to the box and doing his time. Complaining when he was hit, and generally being a bit of a whiner and complainer. I still see that in PK! Yes. PK has been called or some pretty border line penalties, but even when he is definitely guilty, he pulls that ” raise his arms” to say, What!! me!!

    When he matures a bit more and sticks to playing the way he can, I think it will die down like it has with Sid the Kid!

      So what you are saying is that he needs to learn to play the white way, right? No other player in the league complains, shrugs shoulders, rolls eyes, etc. Basically, you just described 95% of the league.

      PS… didn’t mean to rag on you personally with my response. I just think that Subban is no different than most players in terms of his on-ice behavior. The reason he is treated differently is because… I am not allowed to say why.

            Okay! However, I disagree with you! If PK behaved on the ice like Toews, Tavares, or Markov, I don’t believe he would be the target he has become. I would love to compare him to other players who are not white, the fact is, there are not many. Perhaps Simmonds would be a good example!

      IMO Subban is given a hard time not because of how he plays but who he plays for. Don’t forget most of the negative things that are said against him come from media’s in either Toronto or boston. Ironically if he played for the leafs he wouldn’t get any of the negative things said against him because at the age of 24 he would already be one of the best leafs dmen of all time and in boston they would love him on their blueline paired with chara. Would anybody even know who he is if he played for phoenix or nashville? Not likely. Like I said,in my opinion its because who he plays for not how he plays.

      I remember, always trying to save Nell!!

      I find it so ridiculous of the Bruins players to call out Subban and Emelin like that. I get it is the head games and the trying to focus the refs on them, but this is so openly outrageous! Three of the dirtiest players are on the Bruins, cowardly Lucic and Marchand, who will never fight their own battles, Lucic will if he can fight someone smaller, and Chara, who will fight his own battles but is very sneaky dirty!

    Listened to Steve Shutt on TSN 1290 today. Some good stories about the past when he was with the Habs. He predicts 7 games with 7th going overtime with both teams so evenly matched. Best story was about Ken Dryden (Steve said goalie’s in the 70’s were mostly like outdoor hockey where either the “Fat Kid” or worst player went into net. When told Dryden wasn’t fat he stated “Yeah he wasn’t, but he could not skate”.

    All the talk of diving reminds me of one of my favourite hockey memories from the 1980’s. I can’t remember who they were playing, but the referee called a penalty on one of the Habs defenceman. Unfortunately, Bobby Smith had been engaged on the same play with one of the forwards from the other team who took a pretty obvious dive.

    Smith, on hearing the whistle, thought he was getting the call and immediately took a couple of VERY demonstrative steps and then dove onto the ice, earning himself an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play.

    I don’t know if anybody else remembers seeing that one, but it has stuck with me for 25 years. Probably the single funniest thing I’ve ever seen in a hockey game. Everybody (with the notable exception of Smith himself) were fighting against breaking out in laughter.

    I feel pretty confident about Montreal prevailing in this series. Boston hasn’t a chance.
    Was it not foretold in the Bible that Sodom and Begorrah, collectively known as the Gahden of Evil, would be destroyed in a great blaze that covered the land in smoke, to erase the sins of its people?
    And that CHerubs bearing torches would serve as the instruments of justice, at the behest of the greatest Referee-in-Chief the world has ever known?
    Yes, He has fewer rules to enforce – or Commandments, as He likes to call them – but He upholds every one of them, from start to finish, doesn’t matter if it’s the first millennium or the third.
    Lucicfer, prepare to meet your Maker.

      We’re playing the team that ended the regular season on top. No, it won’t be easy, and no, I don’t think that anyone truly believes that the Habs will sweep the Bruins… they’re just too good of a team. But we’ve got some interesting parts that should allow us to give them a run for their money. And for that reason, I believe. Habs in 6, basically because I want to see them win it on home ice.

      Why because Subban is black? Honestly I don’t get why he’s so voraciously booed in most other arenas. He’s not that dirty a player. Someone in the media or the team should speak out about this, even if we can’t prove it. Make the Bruins fans feel like idiots.

        Just about every fan in every city booed Bobby Orr when he was the best player in the league. Maybe fans around the league feel that they should boo P.K. because he is so good, maybe one of the best skaters in the NHL today. The fact that he has a habit of cross checking guys while they are down probably doesn’t help. Hopefully the colour of his skin has nothing to do with what people think of him.

    I never give any credit to trash talk either here or by the opponent`s players and god knows the Bruins enjoy that way of doing things. For me, it just shows that we are screwing with their minds so…let it be i guess !

    In other news it really is true that nothing is final yet with saturday`s game time. As a matter of fact, nobody confirmed from an HNL source that 12. 30 pm was the game time. Only RDS did.
    Quite amateurish from the NHL`s part but who i surprised here ?
