I actually think Koivu’s number SHOULD be retired. His length of time as captain, how he was the face of the organization for a generation of Habs fans, and for what he did for the city of Montreal off of the ice. Sure he isn’t close to as great of a player as those in the rafters now…but that was also a different time. We will never have a group of superstars like we did in the 70s again, and I think the criteria would have to change if anyone else ever went up to the rafters. Koivu should be up there for his work ethic, his dedication, his importance to the 90s generation, and for his community involvement.
Hockey Inside/Out encourages lively debate, but there is a zero-tolerance policy regarding racism, profanity and behaviour that we deem to be offensive.
We will, without warning, ban those who do not abide by this simple rule, so as to maximize the enjoyment of readers and participants of both sexes and all ages.
