Zednik, wife, thank supporters

Panthers forward Richard Zednik and his wife, Jessica, issued a joint statement Wednesday thanking everyone for their support after his scary injury on Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Zednik had his carotid artery severed by a skate blade in the game.

"On behalf of Richard and our entire family, I want to thank the fans, his teammates, the Panthers and Sabres organizations, plus so many others for their prayers and well wishes," Jessica Zednik said. "I especially want to thank the medical staff involved in his care and the Buffalo General Hospital for their tremendous support during this difficult time.

I’ve seen fans from all teams post get well messages on various forums. I’m proud of hockey fans for caring. But mostly, I wonder how rivalries would play into this.

  3. HAB-PROFESSOR says:

    this situation goes beyond rivalry.

because it was such a freak accident it has an impact on all players because it can happen to anyone. Of the BILLION possible locations for Zednik to be on the ice at that SPLIT SECOND, he happened to be right there as Joki was falling with his skate in the air….it has to be a BILLION to ONE chance.

so ya…everyone is routing for him.

All I know is that tonight’s game is the first for the Panthers since Zednik’s accident. Add to the the fact that it’s on their home ice, and I suspect that they’ll be pretty emotionally charged to win this one for their fallen teammate. We can’t take it lightly.

That said, get well, Richard… and I hope to see you back soon.

Yeah, rivalry doesn’t exist in a situation like this. This is about life and death, not some hockey rivalry. If it were a Bruin player who got cut on Montreal ice, he would recieve the same affection and care (unless is was Chara haha jk)

    Go Zed Go!

It is probably more than a billion to one. Think of every play that has happened in 100+ years of the NHL and it has only happened 2 times.

2,500 games per year, how many plays per game over 100 years. And yes I know there were different schedules with different games, it is just to clarify the point, but it is certainly a longshot.

I feel bad for Zeddy after the McLaren hit he was never the same and now he gets hot again and this happens.

All the best to the Zednik family. Here is hoping that Florida wins one for him………..next game :)

Yes Malarchuk did come back to play but wasn’t the same after. He retired a couple years later. Heres a link to some info about him:

It took Zednick a long time to come back after that hit from McLaren….. he’s a tough competitor and an even tougher cookie but this incident may be the icing on the cake for him.

Q: did Malarchuk ever come back to play following a similar incident?

  10. Chuck says:

He played a couple of more seasons with the Sabres before rounding out his career with five years in the IHL.

He was back on skates four days after the incident, but I don’t think he was ever the same goaltender again.

I love this guy. Richard is one of my all time favorite Habs. I agree, he was never the same after the Mclaren cheap shot. Can you blame him though? That playoff series against Boston was Richard announcing to the National Hockey League that he had arrived, and some goon tries to take his head off. He has played on several teams over the last couple of seasons, all of them lacking a legitamate first line center, and yet he still manages to score. After following the games leading up to the Buffalo incident, I just can’t help but feeling that he had once again that he had ‘arrived’. Here’s to hoping he returns.

Hey he scored the winning goal in the last series we won in the playoffs.
    Good luck Richard.
