Wisniewski questionable, Price vs NYR

Not likely done in training camps today: New York Rangers’ Tony Leswick goes up and over teammate Allan Stanley (hidden) and Fred Shero (yes, that Fred Shero) during Oct. 17, 1949 training camp practice.
Acme Newsphotos (not making up that credit)

AUDIO: Jacques Martin | Scott Gomez | P.K. Subban

Defenceman James Wisniewski was the only player missing from this morning’s practice in Brossard, home with an illness. Head coach Jacques Martin said the player is a question mark for Saturday afternoon’s home game vs. the New York Rangers.

Michael Cammalleri did not skate today, still nursing a separated shoulder that’s on the mend, and Martin said there was no timetable for his return.

No changes in lines, which meant: Pacioretty-Plekanec-Gionta | Kostitsyn-Gomez-Eller | Darche-Desharnais-Pouliot | Moen-Halpern-Pyatt

On defence: Subban-Gill | Spacek-Hamrlik | Weber-Picard

    Possibly the stupidest contract ever.

    (1) Subban – Gill

    (2) Gorges – Weber

    (3) Spacek – Tinordi

    (1) Subban, ok, but Gill playing on the first D-pairing? Your top pairing has to be capable in 5 on 5 play.

    (2) Not bad, but Weber needs to be on the bottom pair next year. Gorges should be paired with a good D to make a balanced and formidable pairing, not with a developing D. Gorges would be wasted by using him to cover up mistakes and help a young D along the way instead of playing with someone like Subban, Markov, or Wiz, who already have dynamic offensive sides.

    (3) Tinordi is a couple years away at least and Spacek is a 6th or 7th Dman next year.

    You’re missing a top pair / 2 top-4 Dmen.

    Hammer has been very good this year and last. The problem is that at his age he is best suited to second pairing minutes with a young, preferably tougher partner.

    He isnt getting any younger and with our aged defence corps we need to bring in younger players. His contract is up and unless we can unload Spacek PG may have to walk away from Hamrlik.

    I think it’s kind of unfair to criticize the player for the contract they sign. The Islanders are easily the worst managed team in the league for the last 20 years (even worse than the Laughs).

    Nice post, Bill.

    Right now, we are paying out 22.5M for our defense, in terms of the cap.

    Using your players and some wage guesswork, next year’s D might look like this:

    Markov = 6M

    Subban = 875000

    Regehr = 4M

    Weber = 750000

    Gorges = 3M

    Wiz = 4.5M

    Spacek = 3.8M

    That puts your defense at 23M, which is the same as this year when you take into account a bump in the cap for next year.  That leaves only two questions.  What would we have to give up to acquire Regehr, and are we willing to give the Wiz a five year deal for 23-24M?

    Funny how that stupid remark keeps getting posted here.  Guess the people posting don’t know that there isn’t a huge market for goalies in the NHL lately, especially ones that havent played a full NHL season.

    Oh boy.  You’re in for it as soon as TomNickle sees this.  It’s going to be very entertaining.
