Winnipeg’s new NHL franchise will play its first home game against the Canadiens on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. ET.
The NHL will release its full schedule Thursday at 2 pm ET.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the game in Winnipeg will be the first for the Canadiens next season. The past two years, they’ve opened in Toronto vs. the Maple Leafs. In fact, you’d have to go back to the 1999-2000 season to find the year the Habs opened their season at home – that game a 4-1 loss to Toronto.
The Habs can’t play at the Bell Centre before Oct. 11, with Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour and Disney On Ice occupying the arena in early October.
(For what it’s worth: the Canadiens opened Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena, aka the Igloo, with a win, then beat the Penguins in Game 7 of the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal in 2010 to close that building for good.)
• NHL AWARDS UPDATE: Canadiens goalie Carey Price finished fifth in voting for the Vézina Trophy, earning one first-place vote, and seventh in balloting for the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player, earning two first-place votes in that category. Centreman Tomas Plekanec finished 13th in voting for the Frank Selke award as the NHL’s best defensive forward, while coach Jacques Martin was tied for 13th in voting for the Jack Adams award going to the league’s top coach. Roundup of the evening in Las Vegas is here.

Last night’s voting tally:
NORRIS: Lidstrom (736), Weber (727), Chara (688), Visnovsky (573), Yandle (312)
SELKE: Kesler (1.179), Toews (476), Datsuyk (348), Bergeron (296), Malhotra (229)
ADAMS: Bylsma (196), Vigneault (169), Trotz (80), Boucher (54), Lemaire (27)
CALDER: Skinner (1,055), Couture (908), Grabner (497), Crawford (336), Carlson (188)
GM OF THE YEAR: Gillis (96), Yzerman (61), Poile (55), Murray (35), Shero (26)
LADY BYNG: St. Louis (994), Lidstrom (464), Eriksson (347), Marleau (241), Toews (233)
VEZINA: Thomas (104), Rinne (84), Luongo (33), Lundqvist (23), Price (10)
HART: Perry (1,043), Sedin (960), St. Louis (332), Rinne (175), Thomas (171)
I’m a bit surprised to see just how close Weber was to nabbing his first Norris. I’ve been saying for many years that if he played in Canada nobody would care about Dion Phaneuf. Looks like some folks are starting to take notice. Within 3 years he will win one.
It’s unfortunate to see that so many voters for the Hart do not understand the definition of “most valuable to his team.” In the cases of Daniel Sedin & Martin St. Louis, while both are certainly key cogs in the respective wheels, neither is head & shoulders more integral to the team’s success than other players on their team.
Hats off to those who voted for Perry, as he definitely fits that mold.
During the long summer, we all get to be pretend GM.
Corey Perry is more pivotal to his team than Sedin or St. Louis?
I think people tend to overlook the offensive prowess of the Ducks last year and are giving Corey Perry a bit too much credit. He did have a fantastic close to the season, but their offence was firing on all cylinders. Down the stretch (February, March, April), here’s how the Ducks top offensive players did:
Perry: 30 GP, 25 G, 47 PTS
Getzlaf: 27 GP, 6 G, 39 PTS
Selanne: 30 GP, 16 G, 35 PTS
Ryan: 30 GP, 12 G, 32 PTS
Visnovsky: 30 GP, 10 G, 25 PTS
Koivu: 24 GP, 4 G, 18 PTS
Fowler: 30 GP, 5G, 14 PTS
Most NHL teams would be on a long winning streak with that kind of production from their top guys.
I would have given the voters more credit if they had gone off the grid a little and looked at a guy like Zetterberg, who carried the Red Wings in a season where Datsyuk was injured and many of their other stars were either injured or not at their usual level.
They should have changed the name on Perry’s jersey to CLUTCH, he wasn’t so much what he did, other guys were comparable, but when he did it. Whenever a game was on the line. It was unbelievable, like back when John Leclair was being ridiculous for us (and of course we dumped him).
If Hiller is healthy Ducks are going to be serious, Visnovsky is a stud, and Fowler is really young but highly skilled. Kings will be good, too, with Kopitar back.
It would be classy if Ducks “loaned” Selanne to Jets for the opening game (assuming he doesn’t retire). I think he’ll play for Ducks one more year.
If Sidney Crosby doesn’t go down to injury, Kris Letang would have definitely been in the running for the Norris Trophy. On January 5, when Crosby went down, Letang’s numbers were:
41 GP, 6 G, 30 A, 36 PTS, +23, 50 PIM, 78 Hits, 41 Blocked Shots
Just shows how important a supporting cast can be. Without Crosby (and Malkin for most of it) the Penguins offence disappeared and so did Letang’s offensive production:
41 GP, 2 G, 12 A, 14 PTS, -8, 51 PIM, 89 Hits, 68 Blocked Shots
can anyone tell me , has patches used his rookie year status yet
Looking at the ‘Peg’s options in the draft, they’d probably like to get their hands on Strome or Couturier if they’re in range. Big Centres with favourable rankings, check out Strome on YouTube, he has some nice moves and a solid shot.
THN has them taking Dougie Hamilton but honestly, with Bogosian, Enstrom and Byfuglien and their top C being Ex-Loaf Nik Antropov, who should they be going after?

Just watched the highlights from the NHL Awards ceremony. I enjoyed some of the players speeches, particularly Doug Weight, I thought he was very well spoken. Glas to see Laperrière get an award as well. I could have done without the dumb ass US military show. I can’t support a regime that illegally invades country after country chasing al-Quaida “Boogy Men” when in fact its to pillage and steal natural resources. Sorry about the political rant but keep the military out of the sport.
suprised that c campbell did not get an award for shameless favourtism all season and playoffs towards boston. j jacob and bettman could have given him the award or even shared it,,,lol…everytime i see campbell he looks like a man with many inner demons…maybe in 5 years from now he will write a book to cleanse himself…that may be more scandalous than the nba ref caper….

That building will be rocking. An excellant game for the Winni fans. The Habs will need to bring their “A” game that night. Hope its the national broadcast to welcome back their team.

PK Subban made the All-Rookie team let’s not forget. He and John Carlson share the D spots likely owing to being the two most complete defencemen amongst the rookies. Corey Crawford, Michael Grabner, Logan Couture and Jeff Skinner rounded the group out, quite formidable.

Great. If the Habs sign Hamrlik they’d have two players who can make the Old-Fogie team too.
I think you need to come work for my company HH, we have a great drug benefits plan, your happy pill prescriptions would be easier to handle.

It just keeps getting better. The league could move to just 4 divisions for the 2012-2013 season. Bettman has made the proposal. Apparently nobody is happy with the current format. There would be two 8 team and two 7 team divisions.
The realignment would see the top 4 teams from each division go to the play-offs. The 1st round would be intra-divisional (remember when every year we’d face the Nordiques, Sabres, Bruins or Whalers) with the 2nd round moving to the Conference format.

I like the split, mixed feelings about the divisional playoff setup though.
Sounds like the AHL system
Carrying on the radio thread discussion below, Terry Dimonte is returning to CHOM, and I found this clip of Ted Bird doing this awesome clip which pertains to hockey, I giggled my arse off listening to this.

Terry Dimonte still exists? I left Montreal over twenty years ago, and that gasbag had already worn out his shtick back then.

Glad to hear Terry is back, stopped listening to CHOM when he left. Have know Terry most of my life and he is no gasbag!!!!
That is Hilarious…..
I miss hockey already :/
Watching the very lackluster NHL award show tonight, something occurred to me…..
Every trophy is named after someone, except the trophy for best GM, which is simply known as the GM of the Year Award. Would it not be fitting and just to call it the Sam Pollock Trophy? I mean it’s not like there’s ANY dispute that he’s the best GM ever, so why not be consistent with the other awards and give it a proper namesake. While they’re at it, why not a trophy for most assists (thay have goals and total points trophies already)? Obviously that would be the Wayne Gretzky Trophy.
I don’t really care that much for the awards, but just a few things that donned on me while watching for the first time and many years.

Edited.

I’m going to have to find someone to bribe for tickets I guess. Of course that means actually finding
someone I know who has tickets in the first place…….
Awwww Dave I hope your source is wrong. Really, in my heart of hearts, I hope to see the NHL schedule us for the bruins opener. For one it would cement my conspiracy theories that ‘daddy’ AND Bettscrap helped to bring the cup in Badston only to try and humiliate us in the process. Though I have to admit having the flyers open the year after they plowed the bruins nose in it after a 3-0 series defecit only for flyers to lose in THE final seems like, well how should I put it, no better than a fatal stab wound from a fatal bullett wound. It’s all the same. You’re dead. But in my humble opinion, should I have been gifted enough and lucky to be drafted and play for my beloved canadiens, as a born and raised ‘ proud frog’ that I am, or for any player wearing the jersey known all over the globe, they should say hell oui!!!! This is MY motivation. The sleeping giant sleeps no more. This is the year! We will not only wipe but thoroughly scrub the tainted Chara saliva that lines the sainted cup and parade the trophy down saint Catherine street to a tearfully appreciative crowd that has long deserved it. Montreal is the ESSENCE of the cup. We are the cup
slychard…..Your an idiot….no cup for Habs until 20 years or more around 2031 or something

I guess they don’t learn how to speak English in Boston, it’s You’re, and your grammar is just terrible. Go back to school.
Someone who consistently uses your when they mean you’re calls someone else an idiot. Good one!
The most boring NHL awards night in memory. Very armature entertainment. Terrible show!
So sad, what is going on in this NHL league today, from top to bottom.!!!
We are all armature GM’s here. I guess you can be an armature critic too.
Looked very bush.
Right on the money, Ian. Even the NHL’s award show is bush league. How could such a wonderful sport wind up in the hands of such incompetent people? Shameful.
- Honestly yours
I’ve never really watched one, but I saw part of an interview on TV, it’s insane how young Jeff Skinner looks. I thought at first it was a young-looking draft prospect.
Nice. Hope they’ve finally updated (ie. added) cameras for video review in the MTS Centre. Bulldogs got screwed a few times by non-goals in that building…
Can you imagine if we STILL steal all the thunder and 90% of the fans are decked out in red?
Hell, I’ll start spreadin the word in the Peg right now!
…
Now, don’t want to sound ignorant, is Winnipeg in Mongolia or Russia? Want to know afore dialing 011-001, knowumsayin?
Aw, whatever, this is gonna be so cool!
Gone figuratively fishin filibusts L. B. Potter, esq.
Seeing as they sold 13,000 Season Tickets in 4 minutes, it’s safe to say for their first game there will be virtually none unless their new team’s colours happen to be red.
Winnipeg has a hockey team? The game could actually be snowed out because it’s the dead of winter there in October, no?
I know right, who would put a team somewhere with winter?
And black files and women with hairy armpits!
Scalped tickets, im already planning a trip. Cammalleri #13 will be dawned.

Ha!!!! Habs open the return home ( a long, well deserved return ) for Winnipeg in the NHL. NOT the lafs, NOT the rangers, NOT the Stanley cup ‘chumps’ bruins, NOT even the Gary Bettman sanctioned NHL POWERHOUSE prototype franchise Coyotees are opening in Winnipeg. NO. It’s the habs. How fitting. Well deserved for hard core fans longing for their sport. Now I really hope the NHL schedules the habs for the bruins season opener as well. Go ahead! I hope it wakes the sleeping giant for a new 5 year cup run. Oh yeah, bring it on!!!! Welcome back Winnipeg!!!!!!!!
Don’t forget, they will be playing with tons of emotion. It’ll be a tough one for the visitor, no matter who it is.
Maybe the conspiracy continues, with Bettman making the Habs the sacrificial lamb!
Wasn’t Atlanta the Habs had a hard time beating last season? Isn’t that the same team in Winnipeg? Awesome

I don’t want us opening in Boston or Tarranna. Sick of opening on the road against the laffs. It’s feels like we’ve been doing that for the last ten years.
Great news. Should be a heck of an occasion. I remember many games where the “Guy, Guy, Guy!!” chants would start in Winnipeg and continue in Calgary and Edmonton when Lafleur and the Canadiens headed west. They appreciated the greatness. Now it’s time for them to get their beloved team back and I couldn’t be happier for them.
…Brian Burke must be an extremely perplexed man about now …beside himself wondering WHY wouldn’t the Jets (?) want ‘Canada’s Team’ (aka, the MuppleWeeds) be honored as Winnipeg’s first opponent

I hope this means they won’t be at Boston’s home opener. That would be hard to watch as they raise their banner.
Boston opens at home vs. Philly on Oct. 6, by one report.

Thanks Dave. I don’t think I’d be able to watch!
On the contrary, I’d like the youngsters on the team to experience the ceremony and hopefully give them a taste of what they can achieve.
I’d rather not see the Habs drinking $100,000 champagne with their pet dogs. How the Bruins managed to sneak those puppies past the doormen is your guess as good as mine. They even had the audacity to put jewelry on them and pretend they were women.
They were in Boston – maybe they were women.
I’ve heard stories about the girls there… 8)

Apparently a tribute to a child molester (Michael Jackson) is more important than a Habs game.
Strange he is so popular, when pretty much all other child molesters are universally reviled. Well, except priests, I guess.
That building will be rocking. An excellant game for the Winni fans. The Habs will need to bring their “A” game that night. Hope its the national broadcast to welcome back their team.
I figured it might be Edm or Calgary. I guess they’re not a a real Western team for another year.
