Winnipeg’s new NHL franchise will play its first home game against the Canadiens on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. ET.
The NHL will release its full schedule Thursday at 2 pm ET.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the game in Winnipeg will be the first for the Canadiens next season. The past two years, they’ve opened in Toronto vs. the Maple Leafs. In fact, you’d have to go back to the 1999-2000 season to find the year the Habs opened their season at home – that game a 4-1 loss to Toronto.
The Habs can’t play at the Bell Centre before Oct. 11, with Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour and Disney On Ice occupying the arena in early October.
(For what it’s worth: the Canadiens opened Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena, aka the Igloo, with a win, then beat the Penguins in Game 7 of the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal in 2010 to close that building for good.)
• NHL AWARDS UPDATE: Canadiens goalie Carey Price finished fifth in voting for the Vézina Trophy, earning one first-place vote, and seventh in balloting for the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player, earning two first-place votes in that category. Centreman Tomas Plekanec finished 13th in voting for the Frank Selke award as the NHL’s best defensive forward, while coach Jacques Martin was tied for 13th in voting for the Jack Adams award going to the league’s top coach. I’m a bit surprised to see just how close Weber was to nabbing his first Norris. I’ve been saying for many years that if he played in Canada nobody would care about Dion Phaneuf. Looks like some folks are starting to take notice. Within 3 years he will win one.
It’s unfortunate to see that so many voters for the Hart do not understand the definition of “most valuable to his team.” In the cases of Daniel Sedin & Martin St. Louis, while both are certainly key cogs in the respective wheels, neither is head & shoulders more integral to the team’s success than other players on their team.
Hats off to those who voted for Perry, as he definitely fits that mold.

Corey Perry is more pivotal to his team than Sedin or St. Louis?
I think people tend to overlook the offensive prowess of the Ducks last year and are giving Corey Perry a bit too much credit. He did have a fantastic close to the season, but their offence was firing on all cylinders. Down the stretch (February, March, April), here’s how the Ducks top offensive players did:
Perry: 30 GP, 25 G, 47 PTS
Getzlaf: 27 GP, 6 G, 39 PTS
Selanne: 30 GP, 16 G, 35 PTS
Ryan: 30 GP, 12 G, 32 PTS
Visnovsky: 30 GP, 10 G, 25 PTS
Koivu: 24 GP, 4 G, 18 PTS
Fowler: 30 GP, 5G, 14 PTS
Most NHL teams would be on a long winning streak with that kind of production from their top guys.
I would have given the voters more credit if they had gone off the grid a little and looked at a guy like Zetterberg, who carried the Red Wings in a season where Datsyuk was injured and many of their other stars were either injured or not at their usual level.
They should have changed the name on Perry’s jersey to CLUTCH, he wasn’t so much what he did, other guys were comparable, but when he did it. Whenever a game was on the line. It was unbelievable, like back when John Leclair was being ridiculous for us (and of course we dumped him).
If Hiller is healthy Ducks are going to be serious, Visnovsky is a stud, and Fowler is really young but highly skilled. Kings will be good, too, with Kopitar back.
It would be classy if Ducks “loaned” Selanne to Jets for the opening game (assuming he doesn’t retire). I think he’ll play for Ducks one more year.
If Sidney Crosby doesn’t go down to injury, Kris Letang would have definitely been in the running for the Norris Trophy. On January 5, when Crosby went down, Letang’s numbers were:
41 GP, 6 G, 30 A, 36 PTS, +23, 50 PIM, 78 Hits, 41 Blocked Shots
Just shows how important a supporting cast can be. Without Crosby (and Malkin for most of it) the Penguins offence disappeared and so did Letang’s offensive production:
41 GP, 2 G, 12 A, 14 PTS, -8, 51 PIM, 89 Hits, 68 Blocked Shots

Looking at the ‘Peg’s options in the draft, they’d probably like to get their hands on Strome or Couturier if they’re in range. Big Centres with favourable rankings, check out Strome on YouTube, he has some nice moves and a solid shot.
THN has them taking Dougie Hamilton but honestly, with Bogosian, Enstrom and Byfuglien and their top C being Ex-Loaf Nik Antropov, who should they be going after?

Just watched the highlights from the NHL Awards ceremony. I enjoyed some of the players speeches, particularly Doug Weight, I thought he was very well spoken. Glas to see Laperrière get an award as well. I could have done without the dumb ass US military show. I can’t support a regime that illegally invades country after country chasing al-Quaida “Boogy Men” when in fact its to pillage and steal natural resources. Sorry about the political rant but keep the military out of the sport.

PK Subban made the All-Rookie team let’s not forget. He and John Carlson share the D spots likely owing to being the two most complete defencemen amongst the rookies. Corey Crawford, Michael Grabner, Logan Couture and Jeff Skinner rounded the group out, quite formidable.

It just keeps getting better. The league could move to just 4 divisions for the 2012-2013 season. Bettman has made the proposal. Apparently nobody is happy with the current format. There would be two 8 team and two 7 team divisions.
The realignment would see the top 4 teams from each division go to the play-offs. The 1st round would be intra-divisional (remember when every year we’d face the Nordiques, Sabres, Bruins or Whalers) with the 2nd round moving to the Conference format.

Watching the very lackluster NHL award show tonight, something occurred to me…..
Every trophy is named after someone, except the trophy for best GM, which is simply known as the GM of the Year Award. Would it not be fitting and just to call it the Sam Pollock Trophy? I mean it’s not like there’s ANY dispute that he’s the best GM ever, so why not be consistent with the other awards and give it a proper namesake. While they’re at it, why not a trophy for most assists (thay have goals and total points trophies already)? Obviously that would be the Wayne Gretzky Trophy.
I don’t really care that much for the awards, but just a few things that donned on me while watching for the first time and many years.

For one it would cement my conspiracy theories that ‘daddy’ AND Bettscrap helped to bring the cup in Badston only to try and humiliate us in the process. Great news. Should be a heck of an occasion. I remember many games where the “Guy, Guy, Guy!!” chants would start in Winnipeg and continue in Calgary and Edmonton when Lafleur and the Canadiens headed west. They appreciated the greatness. Now it’s time for them to get their beloved team back and I couldn’t be happier for them.
