You know we’re goin’ to HIO City, gonna have some fun.

• Hey, did everyone catch the best player in the NHL scoring, crunching a pest, saving a goal and setting up the winner in Pittsburgh tonight?

• My man Ilya the K scored a second playoff goal to go along with his regular-season 338. And don’t invite him and Mike Richards to the same poker game.

• Zach Parise – arguably the third-best player in the league – got one and helped Dainus Zubrus get the winner in a game NJ needed as much as the Penguins did … and the Caps do.

  28. pmaraw says:

backstrom and malkin play with sid and ov, which is why parise is “arguably” the 3rd best.  he plays with lagenbrunner and elias?  hardly malkin level of play.  but wouldn’t h.sedin be in the top 3?  he is gonna win the hart right?

  29. MikeL says:

I’d put Parise and Malkin about on par, and Backstrom below both of them.

  30. SeriousFan09 says:

    • Zach Parise – arguably the third-best player in the league – got the

Parise is great, but not that great. Backstrom and Malkin are easily ahead of him.

  31. pmaraw says:

san jose worked so hard at the end of the 1st to get that goal, and they start of the 2nd by giving one up almost immediately

  32. MikeL says:

Sharks go out year after year because their best players crumble under pressure. What do they do? They go out and get Dany Heatley to fill the top line role of no-shows.

  33. SeriousFan09 says:

Malkin generates a lot of points playing next to nobodies in Pittsburgh, much like Crosby does a lot of time there, neither of them have good scoring wingers to work with for much of their careers and they’re generally only teamed up on the PP unit. Those two make others around them much better than they are.

Backstrom does play with Ovie, but the Capitals won nearly all their games when Ovechkin was out because Backstrom could lead the way in his abscence, he is a 55+ assists player in each of his first three NHL seasons and he’s improved consistently on his entire game for all 3 of his NHL seasons so far, impeccable vision, very strong on the puck and has a goal scoring touch looking at the goals he scored this season. If he played elsewhere, he’d be scoring over 40 goals if he wasn’t passing so often to Ovechkin and Knuble.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
    http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

  34. pmaraw says:

malkin and crosby play plenty together, and when they’re split up, crosby draws top d coverage.  backstrom gets 55+ assists cause ov scores 50+ goals.  parise can do it by himself, much like crosby, not at crosby’s level but damn close.

  35. J. Ambrose says:

Did you see that assist by Henrik on the game winner last night? He is truly slick, that lad.

  36. pmaraw says:

ya no kidding, he has unbelievable vision and creativity

  37. SeriousFan09 says:

Crosby may draw top D coverage but when your average Malkin winger is a 3rd-liner like Dupuis, an ancient Bill Guerin or a seriously washed up Ruslan Fedotenko, how reliably can they execute on the chances he sets them up for? Malkin had the scoring title in his 3rd NHL season playing with nobodies for the most part outside of the PP unit while Ovechkin had Semin and Backstrom for most of last year. The average game, Crosby and Malkina are 1-2 centres and are split up so the other team can’t just shut that line out and win the game because there’s little depth after them.

You put Backstrom out there without Ovechkin, he is still an incredibly effective player. There is a reason the Capitals were nearly undefeated even when Ovechkin missed time this season.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  38. pmaraw says:

You put Backstrom out there without Ovechkin, he is still an incredibly effective player. There is a reason the Capitals were nearly undefeated even when Ovechkin missed time this season.  -  because they didnt play the habs ;)  its arguable, look how far team USA got, who was their best player? not kesler.

  39. MikeL says:

And you think Backstrom is the only reason?

How bout Green, Semin, Fleishmann, Knuble, Fehr, Laich.

Look at the stats. The team is sick as a whole.

  40. pmaraw says:

good thing they dont have brodeur or miller

  41. SeriousFan09 says:

Parise was their best skater yes but Miller was their best man. I think that’s why the Parise love has risen this year notably is because of his great Tournament performance, but outside of that Tournament I have 6 of our last 8 games with New Jersey and I’ve nver really been overly impressed with what he does to say he’s Top 3, or even Top 5. Albeit, I don’t watch NJ outside of that really, their ‘style’ is a joke and ruins hockey games.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
    http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

  42. SeriousFan09 says:

After Ovechkin though, Backstrom is clearly their best forward and he makes a lot of things happen. He is one of the biggest reasons they succeed, Ovechkin is always a top-3 points producer because he has Backstrom making things happen and boosting his points production. Backstrom is the best guy on Washington to play all 200 feet of the ice by a mile and his defensive ability helps the team out a lot.

During the last five years Lidström has received only three Norris Trophys and three First All-Star Team selections (and one Second All-Star Team selection) and lead his team to the Cup. I dare anyone to find a better defenseman for the time period. Or a more dominant player in his position for the last decade.

As for the good team argument… it is no coincidence the Wings’ current playoff participation streak started with Lidström’s arrival. He is the sole constant there. Of all the HOF players having donned the winged wheel during the last 20 years, he is the only irreplacable.

  84. HabsFanNorway says:

Hard to believe that the Habs didn’t sign him to play on a line with Gionta and Cammalleri ;)

I know that sometimes when i post a comment I leave my manners unchecked, but after recent attacks on my personal e-mail I think it has gone a little too far. I’m only writing this public message to let the community know that there are those among us who find writing private, crude and ad hominem attacks in an e-mail a good way at replying to someone’s comments on HIO.

I don’t recall ever cursing in a comment posted on HIO, yet I got e-mails from several different individuals filled with curse words. Mind you, two of these individuals did refrain from using curse words so i can’t label the entire group.

If you have something to say to me, please, reply to my comments on HIO comment sections. E-mailing me just to insult me seems like a very lowly and pathetic move.

Some of you might say, “well you had your private e-mail posted on the site.” Yes, I did. It was there so that I can communicate with individuals of the community that wanted to take conversations to a personal level, or discuss certain Habs aspects in depth. I thank all of you who have written me in the past and those I currently have dialogues with.

I will not name the individuals because I feel there is no need to ridicule at this point. They post daily so I’m sure they’ll see this message. And I will reiterate, if you feel the need to reply to someone’s comments please do so using the HIO medium. Secondly, I have never used curse words, so please think again when e-mailing people and using grotesque language.

It’s funny because that’s not the first time I hear Nabokov mock-cheered. I think it was 2 seasons ago, there was a game between SJS and Edmonton. The shots in the first were 18-1 in favour of the Sharks, but the score was 1-1. The crowd cheered on Nabby’s 2nd save, an easy dump-in.

    “love cannot drown truth, Nefertiti”

  114. Bugs says:

Just got home. Turned on boob-tube to catch SJ-Lanche finale. Heard shot count. 41-17, SJ favour.

5 goals on 17 shots against Nabby? That’s almost a goal every three shots.

    Did I hear right?

    Unberlievable.

Does this mean Nabby is Turco? Or worse, Nabby is Theo?

    Ridiculously overhyped, call me

  116. Malreg says:

    Goallllllllllllllll!!!!!!

I know every one always makes fun of Joe Thornton, but he’s playing a hell of game tonight.

  117. JIMVINNY says:

His buffonery aside, it was a clean hit.  That reporter is the idiot in that exchange.  Stupid sportnet.

  118. Big Bird says:

Wonder if you would do that in a bar with him. Versus in the stands above him.

  119. showey47 says:

Wow,you must have felt tough pouring your beer on a guy while safely hiding in the stands.

  121. Big Bird says:

Hi Mike - I’m curious how David would be able to ascertain the age, gender and household income of Habs I/O users.  I don’t recall ever filling out that information when signing up.

  126. shootdapuck says:

Did anyone watch the Coyotes-Wings game on Versus?

Mickey Redmond is something else, he must be back on the piss again and gets bitter over having to retire at 28 due to injury when he is drunk.

You can take the boy out of Kirkland Lake but can’t take Kirkland Lake out
    of the boy!

He moaned and whinged the entire game claiming a home town advantage.

……..About the “hits” statistics and every penalty to Detroit was chickensh_t cause it never would be called before the lockout!

Who honestly could care less when 5 goals were scored in three and a half minutes???

Hard to believe he played in Montreal!

“The three stars as selected by Red Fisher of the Montreal Star:
    1st star: Henri Richard
    2nd Star: Doug Harvey
    3rd Star: Jacques Plante

Final score Detroit Red Wings 5 Montreal Canadiens 3″

  127. Exit716 says:

Mickey is an acquired taste. Sure he’s biased but I’d rather listen to him than the idiots on NESN, Edwards and Brickley.

I believe he was seriously ill a few years ago and has cut back on his Red Wings duties.

It’s the multi-billionaires like Mike P Boone who are scewing the stats upwards.

    Where’s the I.Q. chart?

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  130. Exit716 says:

In the words of Tom Hicks’s great and good friend George W. Bush, clearly Uncle George and Hicks “misunderestimated” the challenge they faced in Liverpool. Brits clearly aren’t the biggest fans of Americans.

With his Premier League dream falling apart, his NASCAR venture in distress, I wonder if Gillett doesn’t wish he wasn’t quite as aggressive in his purchases of businesses he didn’t understand.

  131. nickster13 says:

Fascinating stats, i dont know how they can possibly compile the income data, but the women data is a lot closer to 50% than it seems, most girls need to speak up on this site!
