Ryan White and Ian Schultz both are in Montreal but took the morning off at Brossard, having played three games in three nights with the Hamilton Bulldogs Friday through Sunday.
They’ll take part in tonight’s warmup skate before head coach Randy Cunneyworth decides on whether to use them vs. the Carolina Hurricanes.
There was no sign of Travis Moen, a late scratch Saturday with a stubborn upper-body injury. Yannick Weber, nursing a knee injury, and Petteri Nokelainen (upper body) both skated on Brossard’s second sheet of ice.
Defenceman Andrei Markov skated with some gusto before the morning skate began, working out with athletic therapist Graham Rynbend and Scott Livingston, the team’s former strength and conditioning co-ordinator. Presumably, Livingston is aboard to help out with Markov’s ongoing rehab.
Carey Price gets the start in goal tonight vs. Kirk Muller’s Hurricanes, a homecoming game for the former Habs captain and assistant coach, and ex-Habs defenceman Jaroslav Spacek.

Time to vent a bit…
If Pierre Gauthier was being truthful after the Rene Bourque trade when he said the Canadiens are now starting to address their size and toughness issue going forward – it has thankfully ended a long couple years of swallowing one’s pride being a Canadiens’ fan.
And if inserting Ian Schultz into the lineup is another sign that he is continuing to move in that direction I couldn’t be more thrilled.
For the past two years this site has become a rallying point for all the softies who have just gobbled up the Habs brutal plan for building a small and speedy team that will turn their noses when any sort confrontation arises.
Anytime that someone mentions the word “fight” around here they’re accused of being a Brian Burke or Don Cherry fan. Last time I checked 95% of the other teams in the NHL believe that standing up for your teammates is important and fighting belongs in the game.
The Buffalo Sabres, their fans and the media went into a state of panic when they didn’t respond to their goalie being hit by Lucic and now every game since has been a punch out.
Fighting always has and always will be a part of the game. It is a young man’s game where guys bash the heck out of each other in an inclosed area. People that sit behind their computers and think it should be regulated like a bill being passed in the Hosue of Commons are out of their mind.
If you don’t like violence than don’t watch NHL hockey. Watch golf. Watch tennis. Watch figure skating.
People go to and watch the games in large because of the added excitement that a fight might break out. Every person in every arena are on their feat screaming when a fight breaks out. They often cheer louder than a goal!
So I hope this Schultz callup is only the start of things to come. Lets get some swagger back in the Habs organization. The type of swagger we had with guys like Corson, Odelein, Quintal and even Souray in the lineup.
Thank god we’re moving back towards being a real hockey team again.

1) Standing up for your teammates is necessary nowadays, but only so because of toothless regulations and negligent enforcement. In this age of HD cameras and super slo-mo, infractions could be dealt with by the league instead of relying on on-ice justice.
The thing about standing up for your teammates is that it causes a never ending cycle of violence. It is based on the mistaken belief that anger needs to be ‘let out’, that it must be vented instead of bottled up. The thinking is that this is the healthy thing to do, the pressure is released and everything reverts back to normal. In fact, all research has shown that people who act out on their anger and violent impulses don’t go back to ‘normal’, they learn to act in an angry and violent manner, and this behavior is reinforced. The old trope that ‘you deal with it on the ice’ is in fact a perpetuation of the problem. If dealing with it on the ice settled things, I wouldn’t still be homicidally furious at Dale Hunter and Ron Hextall.
2) Fighting will not always be part of the game. That is short-sighted. With all the evidence mounting that blows to the head cause lasting injuries, it’s inevitable that it will be legislated out of the league, either internally or from without. There are lots of facets of the game that has evolved over the decades, and this will be one of them.
To demean people who take a dim view of violence as a tactic in the NHL as milquetoast starry-eyed web trolls does everyone a disservice. The very accomplished Ken Dryden is one former player who I can think would disagree with you on that.
3) I liken the fact that people stand and cheer when a fight happens to the rubber-neckers at motor vehicle incidents. A car crash is spectacular, it’s something we wouldn’t wish on ourselves but will look at how others fared. It’s outside our normal realm of experience, and we are curious and fascinated, but that doesn’t mean we should foster the conditions that cause them, or even create more and sell tickets to them.
4) I don’t want to be told to not watch if I don’t like NHL hockey. By default, NHL hockey is hockey in my country and in the US. I refuse to let a few short-sighted billionaires decide what happens to our game. I also refuse that they be allowed to showcase whatever spectacle they see fit in defiance of societal mores. The constant display of thuggery and lawlessness and unenforced rules has to stop.
The NHL can be thought of as a public utility that we have bought and paid for several times over. I own the damn thing. I have a say.

times like this i miss the old cbc when they had there french national channel covering the habs. I wish i could watch it but i cant – next year i am so getting a dish lol
but a win tonight will lead us to higher hopes in the playoffs – lets not be over confident – hope the boys get the two points at the end of the day. I feel boosted after that Leafs shutout win

Radio Canada only used to cover Canadiens games on Saturdays, and for a too brief while, Wednesdays. I think we are better served now with RDS broadcasting every game, especially when I compare to the Canucks, who have about 30 games on Pay Per View, a ripoff if ever there was one.

I’m conflicted over the callup of Ian Schultz. While guys like Ryan White, Travis Moen and Mike Blunden have a role to play, and while the trade of Mike Cammalleri for René Bourque is looking like a win for our team, I wonder if with the callup of Mr. Schultz we reach a tipping point where the Canadiens are like any other team.
The Gainey Gambit of building a team around speed and skill rather than size was a noble quest to purify the game. It provided us with plenty of thrills but also much heartache. The ‘winning conditions’ had to include an NHL head office that recognized that for the good of the game, it had to make the ESPN SportsCenter highlights and ‘Pardon The Interruption’ show for more than fights, goonery and suspensions, and punished these but rewarded teams that dazzled with artistry. Breathtaking goals and passing had to become the Prime Directive for Gary Bettman and his minions for the Canadiens to capture the Grael. Instead, the NHL is ruled by Jeremy Jacobs and his legions of Orcs, and Canadiens management had to face reality and join the arms race.
To what degree remains to be determined. If Mr. Schultz is brought up to substitute for an ailing Travis Moen and an impotent Aaron Palushaj, it can be allowed, but if he becomes a regular, what does that make our team? We’ve had bigger teams before, teams that weren’t necessarily in the mold of the Flying Frenchmen, teams that would pulverize the opposition with the likes of Dave Maley and Claude Lemieux and Craig Ludwig, and they were competitive and we could cheer for them, but they weren’t necessarily fun to watch, especially when the Oilers-Flames game was broadcast immediately after and featured end-to-end skating and non-stop action.
So I’m torn. I know the veteran players allegedly asked Mr. Gauthier last year to add some size and muscle to the lineup during the off-season. I know how much it must suck to have to face idiots like Brad Ference and Paul Gaustad and take their crap while even stupider idiots in zebra stripes look on, their whistles evidently plugged up by their thick drool. I know Brendan Shanahan has either been NHL-ized and grown calluses on his sense of outrage, or simply been ordered to let the goon times roll. I know that players like Wayne Simmonds and Mike Brown will take runs at our best players if they know they will not face any opposition. I’m just not sure I want to give up and join the parade.

I don’t think it’s fair to label Palushaj as impotent.
He was in his first stint but that was because he was used on the 4th line despite even amateur reports that he can’t adapt to a grinder’s roll.
While he could still use some time in the A, he’s been far more effective this call up.
It may be a little strong choice of words. I’ve labelled him and Andreas Engqvist impotent in previous posts, based strictly on their production for the Canadiens so far, but not with respect to their reputedly fine work in Hamilton, and their career prospects.

I definitely wasn’t singing his praises (and Engqvist even less so), but they both have played well with Hamilton and I thought looked better in the recent call up.
I think we’ll get a better idea of their potential next year with the influx of talent coming into Hamilton next year.

Do you mean the Oilers with Semenko and or McSorley? Yah they were pretty on the ice. I hear your point, but let’s watch Schultz before we categorically dismiss his role and play on the team.
Not categorically dismissing him HiB, I hope he turns into the second coming of Mike McPhee, but I’m conflicted based upon his meager accomplishments so far in Hamilton.
EDIT: And yes the Oilers could flat out fly with either of these enforcers on their roster. The Canadiens during the mid-eighties weren’t particularly fleet of foot, but they did have strong character players like Mike McPhee who did other things well.

I hear you, speaking of McPhee one of my buddies here was his teammate at RPI in college, couldn’t say enough great things about Mike.
I don’t think Schultz is ready for the NHL or that he will have an extended stay this season, but it’s a good chance to give him some experience. He may get 5 or 6 games this season, 20-30 next season, and then he will be expected to compete for a fulltime spot. This is just another excericise in development. Hope he plays well, learns a lot, and has fun. He could turn out to be a real solid piece for our future bottom 6.
Steve.R, I’m totally on board if that’s the plan. Let’s give the kids a taste of the NHL and whet their appetite. Let’s build an organization where playing in Montreal is a privilege, but one you can earn through hard work and dedication.

I appreciate what you are getting at, but I don’t see this team as being on the verge of a tipping point in this way. Firstly, can we at least see Shultz play, not to mention we don’t even know if he will.
But, more importantly, this team hasn’t turned into anything near a plodding bump and grind team. It still features tons of speed and most of our larger players are also very skilled. Eller, Pacioretty, Kostitsyn, Cole, Subban.
We are witnessing more balance, which this team had in its heyday too.
None of our players go around looking for fights or use intimidation as a tactic.
So like I said, I appreciate your sentiment, but I think you are jumping the gun on any sort of tipping point.
If you really want to win a Cup, you must have an answer to all playing styles and tactics. All the great teams have this quality. The 1976 Canadiens were not exactly goons, but they were able to handle the Broad Street Bullie’s tactics. The 2010 Flyers were able to dispatch the Bruins in a tough seven game series, then match Montreal’s speed to make it to the finals. They were able to adapt their team’s playing style and identity to beat the opponent. This year’s Detroit team is very much a skilled hockey team, but you will NEVER run them out of their own rink. Their division is very tough and big, so if Detroit was not able to adapt to that playing style, they would not be in first place. Ottawa is another team that can play a tough or a finesse game as required.
Teams like the Bruins will use intimation and violence to win hockey games, so it is important that the Habs have a counter punch to this strategy (IMO). Likewise, it is equally important that they retain their ability to play a speed and finesse game to match opponents like the Penguins.
I like to think that adding a player like Shultz gives the Habs options for their playing style, rather than taking away from the existing style. Let’s hope Shultz can play hockey as well.
Should be a good game tonight! Enjoying the win streak, hoping for the playoffs, but if we don’t make it, dump some dead weight (Gill, Campoli, Gomer) in the offseason and go younger. Any first rounder will do, not a big fan of this year’s crop. As for the upcoming Bruins game, I think you guys should youtube Schultz before counting him out against anyone. He was one of the toughest guys in the WHL and I haven’t seen him drop too many decisions in the AHL either. He has a great style of game, and although he’s been slow to adjust to the pro game, he grinds hard and forechecks, not super talented but tough and gritty, and was the captain of the Hitmen for several seasons for a reason(and was decent offensively). People are saying he’s not an NHL player, how many so called experts thought that White would be an NHL player, or Gorges, or Desharnais, or anybody who wasn’t a first rounder? Before you all crap on his WHL toughness, remember thats where Lucy and Chara polished their craft as well, and they lost their share of fights there too. He at least won’t back down from anyone, he’ll for sure answer the bell, and while i’m not saying he’ll mop the floor with Lucic or Thornton, but I gaurantee he won’t do too badly either. Have some faith boys. We’re not going to win by gooning, but we also don’t have to sit back and take it from these guys either. Lets go out and beat the Canes then you can all work yourselves into a Lucic lather over how bad he’ll beat up Schultz….just remember you may eat some humble pie after. Schultz is a very similar fighter and size to Jim Vandermeer, and he gave Lucic all he could handle last year while with the Oilers. Let’s give this kid a few games and see what he can do! He’s young and malleable and with some seasoning, could be a diamond in the rough. If he develops into a good third or fourth liner like Thornton, then the Halak trade becomes better and better for us.

So for the last couple of years the debate has been on over the Halak/Eller trade. Not much was made of Schultz except for the hope of many of us that he would become a hard-nosed forward someday. Well this week is the next step for “Sargeant”. Hopefully a force for years to come.

I am not Al but a newbie here from Bonshaw. Long serving Habs fan. I was well entrenched before the Leafs won there last one in 67. Fact was that Punch was right in that we played a Junior B goalie. The only reason they won. Some of my favourite years were spent watching Knuckles Nilan playing for the Nova Scotia Voyageurs.

The White vs Kadri wasn’t much of fight actually, from what I remember it seemed like Kadri was chirping at White then White tried to drop them and everyone kind of jumped in and that was the end of that fight.
All Shultz has to do is bare down on the goalie in body and (lack of) teeth, and that’ll have Ward pooping his pantaloons!

Glad to see White and Shultz called up but both not ready for a brawl with the Bruins. These 2 are not in shape for that and the outcome would probably be embarrasing. Stick to hockey and ignore Thornton and his goon tactics as there will be time for serious pushback in a year or two….NEVER FORGET!!!!
I really enjoyed Sat night’s game and living in the Toronto area makes it that much sweeter. On air boys at the FAN 590 were quite subdued today as were our cheerleading friends over at the Toronto Sports Network (aka TSN).
Still not confident that we will make the playoffs and really we don’t deserve to be in given our play this year. Not only that i don’t believe we are good enough to make any kind of run. i do hope we make some trades at the deadline for good prospects or draft picks.

Gotta say, it’ll be good to see White get back in the lineup, whether tonight or the next game. Hopefully he backs me up with his play, but I think our bottom six forwards just got a whole lot tougher and more determined as a group. Would like to see him play with Eller and Kostitsyn.
Schultz is likely just a physical deterrent for the Bruins game tomorrow. Won’t necessarily stop them from running around like they do, but Lucic, Marchand and Thornton will know that if they start taking liberties, either in front of the net or with the skill guys, they are gonna have to answer the bell. Even if they are accomplished fighters, having to chuck them with someone like Schultz will not be something they look forward to. I can see him nailing down a spot on the bottom 4 next year, but I doubt he sticks once Moen is healthy.
Here’s hoping that Montreal comes out with the same fire they’ve show the last couple. Can’t take the Canes lightly, and can’t get into penalty trouble. They still have some good players over there.

I haven’t seen anything about Avistin getting 10 games in the show but who knows. I really hope not though. He is struggling in Hamilton again this year. I have seen him play some fantastic hockey and make dazzling plays and then he vanishes and looks lost out there. He is still young, doesn’t speak English very well and I think he will get better but needs at least another full season in the AHL for that to happen
Someone reported that his agent was claiming that earlier. Avistin is out again with a wrist injury, not sure if it is the same one that has had all the surgery.

I suspect both White and Schultz will play tonight so as to test the waters before the big game against the B’s. I think it’s a good way to keep the momemtum going..bring in these guys and it’s unlikely the team comes out flat. Bad news is that the price of ticket for Wed just went up 20%.
Win tonight and we’re at the right level post allstar ie 6-3 or 667%. That’s required to make the second season.

While I’m thrilled to see White getting back into the line-up soon, I’ve got to admit that the Schultz call-up seems like a bit of a gamble. It send a pretty clear message: they’re practically challenging the Bruins to a goonfest.
Don’t get me wrong, this Habs team is much more robuste than last year’s edition. Swapping out Bourque for Cammalleri, White for Pyatt and Emelin for Sopel, then tossing in Cole and a rejuvenated MaxPac, means these guys are no longer the speedy smurfs of 10/11. But c’mon. What have we got to gain by playing that game?
If management thinks they’re still in the race, then I think the call up is early. If not, then fine, test him and others out. Schultz is finally showing the promise of a checking forward who can put up a few points and play defence (a la Moen but maybe slightly better with his fists).
Don’t you think that Schultz is getting some time to see if he can step in if they want to trade Moen?
Schultz is nowhere near being the best option at this stage, from what I can see. The checking forward role is clearly White’s, either with or instead of Moen. Schultz’s numbers aren’t in the same territory as those two, hockey-wise. For now, he’s a one-dimensional piece: muscle.
I don’t quite get why the habs would want that kind of one-dimensional gamble at a time when they finally have a decent number of guys who can give both grit and game.
It is going to be very interesting to watch The Cole and Pacioretty line play against the Bruins as well as Bourque.
It will also be awesome to see White and Schultz and hitting people and causing a disturbance. Hopefully Moen is ready to go as well.
Maybe Subban or Emelin will deliver a beauty open ice hit?
I have a feeling the Bruins will want to prove that these additions to the Canadiens and change in philosophy don’t equate to much and will want to put a stop to the party fairly quickly. Guaranteed Thornton will have his gloves dropped in the first 5 minutes.
It should be an interesting night to say the least. Hopefully we win too

Listening to RC talk about Moen in the scrum today I didn’t get the impression Moen would be playing until end of the week at soonest.
Moen-White-Schultz would be a great 4th line.
Agree, Hobie. Actually I would be curious to see Gomez with White and Schultz not expecting Gomez to fight but rather zip around while those two throw the body and go to the net.
Yeah – re the (S)ize… not so much & (G)rit…definately …agree…Habs are totally overmatched in this department (in both numbers of players who contribute in this way and in collective, effective toughness).
But, Habs have handled the Bruins in the past relying on hard work, speed.
Unfortunately if Bruins work just as hard…and the going gets tough, the result may not be pretty.
…I know We once had My Hero John Ferguson, Chuckles Knuckles Nilan and John Kordic …but I think the rules of the NHL have changed dramatically since those days, and I don’t see ANY need for a Player like Shultz
…We have some gritty skilled Players now, like Cole, Patches, Moen, White, Kostitsin, …in fact I believe We are more than capable of playing tough skilled hockey without the Shultz type
…unless there is more to His game that I don’t know about yet, I think Shultz is unnecessary, certainly for Carolina, as well the Gooins
I like the Team as it is these past 5 to 6 games …why fiddle with it ?

I think so ….but proof is in the pudding as we know. He has really looked a lot better in the dogs games I have seen him in. He plays a rough style but I wouldn’t call him a dirty player.
Time will tell. they probably want to see what he can do in the show cause I don’t think he has ever played in an actual NHL game.
If he works out they should pick up his brother from Washington. He is a big D man that is pretty decent. He isn’t having a good year and has been scratched a lot lately. Maybe the habs could pick him up cheap

While I understand the sentiment of your post, unfortunately I think the NHL still refuses to police aspects of the game. The most recent example was Brown on Saturday running players freely. He knew nobody was going to essentially tell him to stop. With no Moen, White, Blunden in the lineup he was just given free room.
To me Schultz is only effective if he can provide a forecheck, if all he does is fight and hurts the 4th line, then there is no need for him, that I agree completely.
But one thing about Saturday, PK slew footed Kessel, that behaviour has to stop. I didn’t expect PK to fight Brown late in the 3rd, but I also don’t disagree with Brown going after PK. PK cheapshotted the Leafs best player.
I love PK, just don’t understand why he does these dirty plays with almost regularity (cue screaming responses). By this I mean, it seems every week or 2nd week he gives out a slew foot.
That is a no no play in the NHL and must stop.

PK is such a talent but he has a major problem between the ears….
You know damn well he has been talked to about that type of play and has been fined for it already this year. He should get suspended so maybe he will wake up a bit.
Plays like that make me wonder about PK. Yes, he is young but sooner or later he is going to have to answer for plays like that
29 teams would kill to have P.K. in their line-up . It does tell me that for better and for worse we keep the guy and remember that he is only a kid.

Well the Habs did bring in an enforcer to handle the opposition. He was too busy on facebook and twitter and wouldn’t fight anyone he deemed beneath him. SO he was fired. What did Laraque think he was being paid for his hockey skills! When he was with the club all big George had to do was pound the crap out of lets say Mark Savard and the game would have been over. When your an enforcer your not there to scare other enforcers but rather keep the fear in the players that if they screw around the best enforcer was going to come after me instead of our enforcer. Right now I think the Habs with White, Shultz, Moen, Bourque and Subban can handle themselves against the Bruins. Just kidding about Subban!

I think the back was a convenient excuse at the time, because in interviews I have heard this year, he speaks of JM not letting him fight. He finally got his big payday and became Roberto Duran, No Mas!
Blunden is not afraid to get involved, but he is no former Golden Glove winner, unlike say Nick Fotiu… Blunden gets A for effort and D for achievment as far as fighting goes. But I love what he brings to the ice for this team.

It’s safe to say we can chalk up two points tonight and move to within a point of 10th. I’m glad to see Schultz brought up. I know most writers here have insisted for years that there is no place on Les Canadiens for a player like him and that it is better to have your dignity stripped from you than to take an instigator penalty, but i disagree. He will help us no matter who we meet in the first round.
I’m glad I’m not reading any more insanity about tanking and that the organization has more patience than the so called fans. So fickle. Take Gomez. He goes into a slump and everybody is criticizing the poor guy from the comfort or their chairs. Now that he is earning that contract they have suddenly gone very quiet. Next time you go bashing a guy who has potted 20 goals for us in less than 3 years, try to imagine what he was going through. When he was putting on his Gucci suit and driving his Maserati to Toque! for filet mignon this guy had the weight of the world on his shoulders.
I still hope our GMs are working the phones and trying to get us one more player for the postseason. How would you guys like to see Briere or Keith Ballard in the CH? They only have a few more years on their contracts and if they don’t pan out you can just do what I keep reading people here say about Kaberle – just trade him. It’s that simple. Gauthier will probably have a busy enough summer but another player he might be willing to take a chance on is Mattias Ohlund. He has made bold moves like that before. This guy used to be a heck of a player and if they can get those knees fixed, him and Markov could be pretty dangerous back there. Just some thoughts.

The last two times the team has been on a semi roll were before the Christmas break and the all star break…both times the layoff cooled the team down. I can see them winning 5 of the next 7…and that is dangerous territory as that would bring us to the deadline…and likely 3-5 points out. Itneresting stuff….
To keep things in perspective though folks if the teams behind us simply win their game in had we are still in 14th…but the lights are not completely out. I would prefer to make the playoffs but will be heartbroken if we lose Moen, Gill and Ak for nothing and don’t draft one of the top 4 forwards and finish 9th or 10th.

Gill’s days in Miontreal are done, Moen would be nice but not for more than current money, Ak…I would like to keep. The cap moving forward also likely means that if White/Schultz are capable of handling Moen’s duties then you factor in he probably nets a late 2nd ruonder or mid 3rd rounder and White can be signed for around 800k….and Moen likely wants and deserves over 2 million per….it becomes a pretty easy decision. If White is not deemed able to fill that role….and Shultz looks completely out of place…then perhaps you make room somewhere else but I think Moen and Gill are likely gone…

Gauthier change in philosophy? Not in my opinion, rather, finally a coach wililng to play a more agressive game. JM’s mantra for years has to been to play the higher skill/defensively responsible people and not the physical players. I think PG started to bring in more physical people, but JM didn’t want them, so PG was bringing in players to suit the coach. Now that the coach is more on the same page, PG I think will continue to try and satisfy the coach’s needs.
However, my issue with that, is why didn’t PG TELL JM what kind of players he wanted the team to be. I am generalizing alot in my statement, but that is what I viewed the issue to be.
Very good point. But I think the coach and GM should be on the same page. I guess that can be excused since Martin was hired by Gainey and not Gauthier, and up until this season, we didn’t have any reason to fire JM.
9 days ago we have a 3% of making the playoffs now we at 19% keep playing like this and well be at 100% of in the playoffs

It has been far too long since the Canadiens brought in some added muscle for a game like the one they’re going to play against the Bruins on Wednesday.
I’ve been beside myself for years now with Gauthier, Martin and Gainey paying little or no attention to the fact the other teams are taunting and beating on the Canadiens and sometimes embarrassing them.
If Cunneyworth was the one who turned to Gauthier and asked for Schultz to be called up it’s a huge breath of fresh air and he’s a great coach. You’d have to think that White would have been called up when ready anyways.
Schultz isn’t going to scare McQuaid or Thornton or Lucic but at least he’ll stand up for himself and the team. White as well.
I think the game in Boston last year when Pyatt, Spacek and Hamerlik were beat on and offered zero resistance was an embarrassment for the club and totally swung the momentum in Boston’s favor and had the Canadiens off their game heading into the playoffs.
Boston totally knew from that point that the could squash the Canadiens when push came to shove and they offered zero physical resistance and were timid to even touch the puck.
Shultz is a start, Tinordi will be an awesome sheriff in a couple years and lets just hope this is the start of the Canadiens fighting their way back to respectability and not be labeled as the softest team in the league.
Hopefully the GM adds more toughness on defense and the 3rd/4th lines this summer.

I’d have to disagree with you Shiram. If it were the Habs delivering the beating I’d have loved it. It’s a part of hockey and if a team isn’t ready for it they’re not built correctly.
It clearly showed the lack of control the refs and the league had over the players.
I would not have liked it if the Habs were delivering such beatings to non-fighters, punching when they were down and all.
i also agree with hobie hanson on this one it happens in hockey sometimes and the habs did not back down which i loved to see

I agree Shram. It was/is bad when fighters are picking on guys who don’t fight. Pyatt getting his butt handed too him was just wrong when the other guy is a fighter. I would not be too fond if Schultz was pounding someone like Patrice Bergeron…it is just classless.
It was even worse of the league to do nothing about it. The Boston Bruins style is over the line but the league never disciplines them for their actions. they just penalize the next team to do something similar
Well… that alone won’t make him a great coach. He simply asked for the same thing that every single Habs fan with a pair of eyes has been asking for at least 5 years now.
I think it was Martin who did not believe in toughness. Gainey did sign Laraque, Gauthier traded for Shultz, but there is not much the GM can do if the coach won’t play your tough guys. If you look when Martin coached in Florida, he ran all their tough guys out of town as well. To me, this change is the result of Cunneyworth’s influence, as he played with an edge himself. I am sure he hated watching Brown run around Saturday night with no response from the Habs.
I just hope Shultz can play some hockey as well, the Habs have had some good chemistry lately so I hope this does not disrupt what was working.

Earlier this season when suggestions were made that may be the team should call up Ian schultz, you said that he wasn’t NHL material. Just wondering if you still feel the same way and do you think he brings anything to this team?
in Stubbs defense, schultz last season didn’t play well and has had injuries this season early but since around december has really started playing well…not just fighting. In a grinding role, penalty killing etc he is really starting to take shape. I think he will be on the habs roster next year
Schultz had shown nothing until December. He was frequently scratched at the AHL level. In the WHL, he looked like he could become a rugged NHL-bottom-six-er who could pop in a few goals – i.e. more than a one-dimensional goon. That didn’t translate to the AHL until recently.
As of late, he’s showing he can provide tertiary scoring responsible defensive play. Hopefully he can develop into an ideal 4th liner: put up 20pts-season, bang a few bodies, and be an adequate PK-guy.
I’ll be happy if he beats up Gregory Campbell.

In the Boston game and the feeling I have why Schultz and White will be in the line up for that game is max pac it playing great hockey and the punks for boston will try and rub him out… Lucic won’t fight Schultz as he only picks fights with guys who don’t fight much and if Schultz does get Lucic to drop them it won’t be the miss match some of you on here think it will be… Schultz is bigger than 201 trust me on that… I’m 6’1 225 and have bumped in Schultz when he played for the hit men and he was over the the 200 pound mark than. I hope White gets his hands on the little rat 63… All in all should be a fun filled game on is on TSN be fun to here the homers from Toronto talk the Habs down before the game and be in shock after they own the tea party boys from Boston.
As much as I dont like Boston, Lucic normally answers the bell and if Schultz pushes the right buttons, Lucic would be happy to take him on. But for Schultz’s sake, I really hope that doesn’t happen.
Hockeydb.com lists Schultz as 6’2″ 200 and Luchicken as 6’4″ 220.
I was thinking the other day that it would be nice for all teams to collude and throw their attack dogs at the bruins for the last 20 games, night after night, so by the time the playoffs start they’d be the Big, Battered Bruisins

There’s cause to be reasonably optimistic about the remainder of the season and beyond. Only my second post, so I should say right off the bat that I don’t endorse ‘tanking’ in any way. That’s just not right. The team is, rather surprisingly, beginning to play its best hockey of the season. As RGM mentioned, it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen on (and off) the ice, especially in relation to the results expected of a roster on paper. However, taking things with a generous grain of salt, I am, as I said, optimistic, especially if they can ink in a W after three tonight. This is a (theoretical) should-win. Unfortunately, they often don’t show up for these games. Anyway, I suppose it goes without saying that if they keep reeling off the W’s they will continue to be the hottest team in the conference going down the stretch. That’s a beautiful thing. If management is smart, we could have a very young, very talented, well balanced team to ice in the near future.

I doubt will make it, but if we do we would be playing the Rangers, i’d actually be expecting us to win, they have trouble vs us, and Lundqvist can’t play well in the Bell Centre ever since the 5-0 comeback.
I like our chances against any of Philly, Washington, Rangers. But I still don’t think the playoffs is whats best for the team long-term.

Actually most of PG moves since becoming GM have been to bring in size and grit, even small moves such as Russel for Blunden, resigning White over Pyatt..
Why wasn’t he making the same recommendations as head of pro scouting? He was the guy who said to get Gionta, Cammalleri, Gomez, Niinimaa, etc
How do we know that he recommended them? Its like saying PG recommended that Gainey asks for Gorges in the Rivet trade…
Ps, please don’t put Gionta on that list, the guy is 5’7, but plays like he is 6’3, all he does is score dirty goals.

Well considering we needed a new first line and Gio, Gomez and Cammy were the only guys that were realistically available, that may have been a reason why we went and got them.
No one truly knows what PG recommended on Gomez, he could have told him, he was good for 50-60 points, but on the decline, not worth 7.3M, but can provide leadership, and Gianey simply decided he wanted to make the move anyways. Point is, I choose to judge PG on his moves since becoming GM, and when looking at his moves vs Gianey they are not the same type of moves.
Well… Wiz did not have size. Kab is smaller than Spatcho. Diaz, Campoli, Weber are all smaller than Mara, Sopel and Hamrlik…. Nope I’d say he’s brought in a lot more youth than size.

If you look at the organizational overall, he has brought more size and grit. Traded up to get Tinordi, brought over Emelin, Bourque, etc.
RE the current NHL roster: Size upfront yes. Youth on the backend, but we’ve actually gotten smaller. I’d like to see all the D under 6ft get shipped off though. I think some extra size on the blue line would do wonders for this team.

We are smaller on the backend, but I think that has a lot to do with injuries. Weber doesn’t have a future with the team, Campoli was signed for depth, Diaz would have been in the AHL if it wasn’t for injuries. But if you look at the up and coming d-men in the system, all have size, Tinordi, Beaulieu, even guys like Morgan Ellis and Greg Pateryn.
You’re right about the guys coming down the pipeline at D. In 3 years our blue line will rival any in the league!

As for Mara and Sopel: The discussion wasn’t their talent but their size. Weber, Diaz. If you want me to add the three numbers for you I can:
(6′ 4″ + 6′ 2″ + 5′ 11″) > (5′ 11″ + 5′ 11″ + 6′ 1″)
and in pounds:
(219 + 205 + 206) > (180 + 180 + 214)
As it happens Mara and Sopel both had 40+ pt seasons with a positive +/-. Sopel also won a cup and has played shutting down some of the best in the world.

Sopel is playing somewhere in the KHL and Mara I don’t think he’s playing anywhere, no other team in the NHL wanted them either.
I do agree we are too small on the back end and would like a bigger guy or two back there.

And on paper he was right. This was a squad that looked primed to make a big jump over their 6th place finish from 2010-11 and really give the Bruins a run for their money. Consider:
* It was expected that Markov may miss October and some of November, tops.
* P.K. Subban would build off his fantastic freshman campaign in which he tied a team record for goals by a rookie D-man.
* Max Pacioretty would be back better than ever.
* There was no way Scott Gomez could have had a worse year than his 2010-11 campaign.
* Though they had decent numbers, Brian Gionta and Mike Cammalleri figured to be much better in the season ahead.
* Carey Price was coming off the biggest year of his young career and was primed to continue to improve, and was pegged by The Hockey News as the front-runner for the Vezina.
* Erik Cole would be a valued contributor good for 20-25 goals.
You look at those major items there – how many have come to pass? It just goes to show how difficult predictions are, especially ones made about the future.

I said over the summer that I had no idea how this team would do as there were about a dozen “if’s” that could have us challenging for the Division or missing the play-offs or any position in between. Three positives have been;
- Gorges coming back strong after his surgery
- Max coming back strong after his injury
- Either Emelin or Diaz being NHL ready
The other nine have been less then, although if Price keeps it up, we may have another.
Can’t forget Cole’s night-after-night efforts + he’s one of the top point producers on the Habs. Best UFA signing in the league this past year, in my opinion.
I was expecting Cole to do well, maybe not as well as he has done but. Another positive I missed above was the continued developement of DD and Eller.
I dont know how he could say that, maybe he was just doing some lip service cause the D-corps looked thin & sketchy right from the start.

The things kids can do nowadays is astounding.
I watch my son flip them pucks around and in the hockey factories they some time take time to teach new moves like that.
