Whew!

No one at Habs Inside/Out could bring himself to watch the All-Star Draft.

But we are relieved that Carey Price was not the last player chosen. That would have damaged our boy’s self-esteem – and resulted in 1,500 Comments suggesting an anti-Habs Conspiracy.

As it was, Phil Kessel had the ignominious honour of being the final player selected, his shame eased by winning a car.

Price was picked 10th by Team Staal, just behind Team Lidtsrom’s choice of Marc-André Fleury and ahead of their pick of Jonas Hiller.

Nothing to do during this ‘all-star’ break except contemplate the rest of the year for my HABS. I spent 5 minutes watching silliness of all star draft and plan to spend even less on the game.

Accepting that PG needs to make a MOVE. A big forward or a big defender? Who would best help this team.

I say add a BIG forward. I mean BIG not only in size but in personality and intensity. Someone a little similar to Claude Lemieux who can make it hard to play against us if you were the opponent and harder to play for us if you were a teammate who didnt want to step out of your comfort zone.

I know Claude Lemieux is not a universal favourite. And if we could get a guaranteed big scorer I will of course jump at the chance. But I cant see that happening. So I will settle for a player who brings ‘life’ to our offense in a way that permeates the entire team and provides an upsurge in the enthusiam for ’pushback’, aggressive, forechecking that makes every player on our team needing to go hard and fast or be run over.

I dont think it will happen. Habs management is more into a ‘safe’ player than a ‘go at them’ kinda player. And so we will continue down the road of what people call inconsistent play but really is a consistently lacklustre and fearful style of play play by adding player swho fit that mold.

Price couldn’t have been picked last, anyway. all goalies and defencemen had to be taken by the 10th and 15th rounds, respectively. so a forward was going to be the last one. glad Pricey wasn’t picked as last goalie, though. looks like Team Staal picked Carey over Hiller. that’s at least that.

btw, PK was conservative last night, but did you catch him looking back up towards (i believe) Carey before the rookies sat down in front of the players’ seats? :) cute.

Any suggestions on who that player should be? Keeping in mind of course that it has to be someone who is realistically available.

    FIVE QUESTIONS:

    1. What’s more pathetic – Darren Dreger hosting a panel, or watching fourty of the most skilled hockey players in the world take part in the lamest game show ever?

    2. If we make the playoffs, which team would you most like to face in the first round?

    3. A repeat question (but it’s a set-up to #3), what do Habs most need to make a playoff run (or a run for the playoffs)?

    4. If PG makes a ‘big’ move like many suggest we need, what asset package would you be comfortable giving away?  You have to give to get… so… what or who?

    5. On a scale of 1-10 how much did the “draft” suck.  If you didn’t see it, just say 10.  Yeah, I’m biased, but I want that six hours of my life back.

Don’t get me wrong. I will most likely watch Price’s period in the ASG tomorrow and thats it. Who wins? Who cares…? Its beyond me why this is of any interest at all. HOWEVER,

What I cannot understand is all the HATE the ASG seems to be getting. Don’t like it. Honestly just don’t watch it. Why is it such a bad thing. The teams get together and play a charity like game in front of business men and women. No real huge NHL fans really. I mean some, yeah, but not much. Its a gimmick. But then again so are the 7000 Ovechkin and Boudreau commercials I see here in Washington DC. It seems like the two are pettling everything from carpet cleaners to photocopiers. Although I admit I liked the line from the Mercedes one that Boudreau asked for a BIG Cup holder… Sorry Brucey, Mercedes aren’t made in Montreal….

To me it gives most of the league almost a full week off and showcases some talent and hype on a ASG weekend. Like a vacation for me. I don’t watch the NFL All star game, and I cannot fathom how anyone does. But every year, it’s there (i think).

I mean, Sedin vs Sedin. GENIUS…. NO useless, but still. No reason to say its a waste. It’s sold out. People will watch, and Bettman will count his money. Then we are back to regular hockey.

In the end for me its a well deserved break for the players who are not involved, and for the ones who are…I hope they have patience. So why all the hate for a gimmick. To me ignore it and watch Pricey or simply put in a movie, and pretend we have a longer layover…..

THAT BEING SAID, I AM DYING FOR MY GAME VS THE CAPS TUESDAY WHERE I HAVE TIX RIGHT BEHIND THE HABS BENCH ON THE GLASS. SO ALL OF YOU WATCHING, CHECK OUT THE HANDSOME GUY IN THE HABS HOME JERSEY, SITTING NEXT TO MY BEAUTIFUL WIFE IN THE 1944 HABS HOME SWEATER (I say sweater cause its the jersey made of thick wool) SEATS ARE 3rd AND 4th OVER FROM THE RIGHT.

Can’t figure out who I am, I will be the one sticking my lips through the glass panes trying to convince Muller to stay in Montreal. My wife will be the one hoping Auld gets the start so she can give Price her phone number….

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

    3. For a run, another young, responsible D with NHL experience.

    5. Pass

  10. J_P says:

You know what might actually make the all-star game a little bit more interesting? Something as simple as every player on the winning teams gets like $20K from corporate sponsors of the event to donate to a charity of their choice.

It should definitely amp up the intensity of the game.

You say “don’t watch it’        – THEY WON’T! The ratings especially in the USA will be a joke. Poker games, outdoor life, bowling, porn well porn always has huge ratings so forget that one, cooking shows, msnbc, etc. will all  out rate them.

  14. observer says:

Better still $10,000 donation to a charity must be paid out of each player’s own pocket on the losing team

  15. observer says:

5- It was NOT adraft. Bettman called it a draft so all the media swallowed it. It was a schoolyard/playground pickup game that you used when you were 12 years old. Did you call it a DRAFT then when 2 guys picked teams?

  16. joeybarrie says:

    1. tie.

    2. Washington. Beating them twice will VASTLY improve my quality of life.

    3. Another top 2 line forward like Iginla. Someone with some size and who can score by himself if need be. I would like Gagne from Tampa.

    4. If the move is indeed BIG. Like Iginla, or Spezza… Something along these lines. Then I would be comfortable giving away any of our young fringe players… Pyatt, White, Weber, Picard. Anyone from Hamilton right now. AK, and any picks for next year, and maybe even a 2nd or 3rd round for next season. But there are two things here. It would have to be someone BIG and KEY. I think Iggy has 5 years of quality hockey left, and he will fit nicely in here giving us what we need right away. But I wouldn’t accept anything less than average 80 points a season and max age is Iggy’s.

    5. 10. Wait, it was 6 hours? wow, what a collosal waste of time.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  17. J_P says:

That’s a great call!  Exactly the type of player the habs could use.

We probably wouldn’t have to give up a lot to get him, and he’s only got 1 year left at 3.75 million after this season.

  18. Bugs says:

The three or four “chuckling” moments in the draft didn’t make up for the overall lameness of it. So much lack of wit or nuance or any sense of surprise gets REALLY, really boring after awhile.

The last host I saw in acton was Ricky Gervais so lemme just say that whatsisface from TSN was decidedly underwhelming; stammering his “bon mots” all night long and vainly trying to get players to cooperate with him, it was slightly embarrassing and not funny, yay.

And the car, oh my gosh, I thought it was gonna be or Beetle or something, a Kia, something HE would never drive himself, a little joke at his expense even though he coulda still passed it on to a friend or family member, EVEN THOUGH, the donations in his name were good enough, imo. But a 2011 friggin Honda?! C’mon.

So TERRIFIED is the League to ruffle any egos, I mean…oh my gosh, that was pathetic, a gorgeous friggin car. Paul Stastny is goin “Uhh, hold on…if he gets a…shouldn’t I get…?” What about Cam Ward? He was picked FIRST; what does HE get?

“Oh, you see, it’s because the leafer was last and we don’t wanna hurt anybody’s feelings even though, it was obvious to us there could be no other culminating result and a new car is gonna make everything alright for that millionaire and avoid him resigning from the NHL or worse, committing suicide.”

Hey, next year? Chuck the sticks in the middle. No one’s picked last.

And get Ricky Gervais, ferpetessakes, cuz…DAMN, that was awful.

  19. J_P says:

What i was saying is that I liked your idea of the losing team having to make the donation to the winning teams players charities, but the NHL can’t force the losing team players to make a donation.  That’s why i said the corporate sponsors should give every player on the winning team like $20K to donate to a charity of their choice.

The NFL gives the winning and losing teams players money? That’s just dumb.  At least if the players are forced to give that money to charity they would look like real Douche’s if they didnt show up for a charity hockey game, and would be more likely to show up.

while bettman is not perfect he has grown the value of NHL franchises over the last 10 years in an excellent economy for the most part and the game is growing in most places.  last time i looked the Canadiens were sold for almost 600m that is an astounding amount of money. fact of the matter is there is only 1-2 cities left in canada who may be able to support a team. iam not convinced winnipeg is one of them.

Iginla! If I were PG I would be doing all sorts of scenarios to get this guy. I think he is available and I think a team can land him with the right prospects. Calgary needs prospects.

I would give up a first round readily along with prospects.

  35. habstrinifan says:

I really disagree with you re Iginla. If we were lucky to get Iginla I think it would be a rejuvenation of Cam, a reduction in the status of Gomez/Gionta and a wow factor for all the young prospects. I have said before Iginla will love Montreal and Montreal will love Iginla. Get Iginla and the HABS will return to RESPECT. But please if we get Iginla.. someone sit down and have a chat with JM and open up his mind. No use getting Iginla and JM treating him as the Sutters have.

  36. habstrinifan says:

    3. Add a big high intensity forward and bring up someone who can ‘fight’ and play him.

    4. AK46/Weber or Picard/White/Pouliot in that order.

So effectively, Price was picked second to last… Ahead of Jonas Hiller though, so that’s a positive, right?

  50. joeybarrie says:

You make a good point. But its a tall order, and I can think of many many places to start. For instance…. ASG will be 10 times better than 90% of the reality TV out there right now. And reality TV pretty much covers about 50% of whats on…

    4. Anyone but Price, PK and MaxPac.

    5. I saw 7 seconds of it and I give it an 11.

  54. J_P says:

    1.  The panel was actually really stupid, and Pierre Mcguire was just plain creepy in the way he was analyzing the all-star teams.  The most disappointing thing from last night’s fantasy draft was the realization that hockey players actually are really dry.  There was barely any joking around.

    2.  Philly.  Lets just get it over with right away.  If we can beat them, it should be smooth sailing from there on out.

    3.  Defensive defensemen (chris phillips, Roby Regher type)

    4.  Zero.  I dont see what big impact player would be available at the deadline that we could manage under our cap, and that would beneficial for the organization moving forward, without sending a cammy, gionta or gomez back the other way.  Getting, let’ say, Jerome Iginla would be crippling to this franchise considering his $7 million cap hit for another two years after this one.

    5. I did watch pretty much the entire thing (mostly because i wanted to see kessel go last), and there were a couple of funny moments, so 10 is a bit of a stretch.  I’ll go with 7.

  55. HabFanSince72 says:

What I cannot understand is all the HATE the ASG seems to be getting. Don’t like it. Honestly just don’t watch it. Why is it such a bad thing.

Hate is a strong word, but there is nothing wrong with wanting the world to be a little less lame.

  56. Jonson says:

ive said it before (just lastnight) but ill say it again…..RJ UMBERGER IS THE ANSWER.  If we were to face the flyers  there would be no better player to have on this team. He terrorized montreal last time he played against in the playoffs. Im sure he would be even more motivated to terrorize the Flyers.

PG….. make it happen, i promise you will thank me.

    i accept cash.

  57. ABHabsfan says:

    1. 40 players sitting around, completely un-interested, was pathetic to watch. I like Shanahan’s format, I just think it needed to be shown the way it was.

    2. Gotta be the Bruins.

    3. A reliable, shut-down d-man. Help on defense would free-up the scorers to do their thing and the offense will take care of itself. Chris Philips possibly, or Brent Burns if Minn falters.

    4. Picard is expendable IMO. Moen is not doing much and White can fill his skates quite easily. Depending on the quality on the return, I would move Spatch as well, though he was good in last year’s play-off. He has another year on his contract that could be an anchor next year.

    5. 10. Borrrr-ing. Some trades by the no-personality captains could have provided a little more interest. It was only 6 hrs? it seemed longer.

  58. observer says:

Bettman after deciding that new fans will be attracted to his schoolyard/playground pickup game style game was thinking about having as the uniforms - shirts vs. skins. But quickly reminded himself in that case the NHL would have only half the new uniforms to sell at NHL shop so he discarded that part of his great new format Lidstrom vs. Stahl.

  59. Number31 says:

I find it hilarious that Price and PK end up on the same team (sort of). Can’t get rid of each other! Hope one of them has a flip-cam or something.

  60. observer says:

exactly! and in the usa where bettman wants viewers this game is only on versus that few people have and those people like here have a couple hundred channels they can look at.

  61. observer says:

It is bad enough these all-star games like Fisher says are basically useless but I think it goes back to farther than 1972. I went to the very first one of the East vs. West format back in 1969 at the Forum here – ended in a 3-3 tie. But at least as boring and meaningless the game was fans there or at home on TV could possibly cheer for the conference their favorite team was in and if I recall there were reps of every team of the 12 in the league. But now, which fan or even viewer will give a hoot about whether Team Lidstrom or Team Stahl wins and even watch? This is just another extremely stupid move by Bettman – hockey would be a far better sport had he never arrived.

All-Star games are not for the fansd – they are for the players to make more money for themselves for a holiday. The only All-Star game that still has any meaning is the MLB All-Star game. The Pro Bowl tomorrow no less is a joke as well but not as dumb as Lidstrom vs. Stahl in a pickup game. The Canadian Football League used to have All-Star games, either East vs. West or the previous year’s Grey Cup champion against the All-Stars and like the NHL played before the season started. Alouettes in the early 70s after  their Grey Cup win played the All-Stars at the Autostade the next season. But in football, they can’t blitz or will not hit the QB so like hockey where they won’t bodycheck – it is not a real game.

In baseball, the only one that there still is interest though that interest waned over the years, they remedied it somewhat by giving the winning league the homefield advantage for the World Series. But in the baseball All-Star game, the pitchers will throw as hard and fast as always, the hitters hit as hard, the runners run as fast as always.

I really hope Bettman gets the worst TV ratings ever foir any All-Star game – it will look oh so good on him.

I note that Patrik Elias was chosen for the Devils ahead of Kovalchuk. Looking at the stats Elias leads NJ in points. But that isn’t the interesting stat. Kovalchuk is -29, worse in the entire NHL, by far.

Here are the worst +/- among attackers:

    Simon Gagne             -19

    Phil Kessel             -19

    David Clarkson             -19

    Patrick Marleau             -19

    John Tavares             -21

    Ilya Kovalchuk             -29

Read the article about Claude Lemieux. My memory may be somewhat inaccurate but I wont go checking ‘facts’ to correct it because, as I recall, it was one of the best times as a Montreal fan after the 72-79 dynasty.

That memory is of the year Lemieux and Richer and Momesso etc joined the Canadiens. And especially Lemieux and Richer were so BIG in the playoffs runs. Life was so exciting then watching these young guys on the team .. it seemed that HABS glory would go ON AND ON seamlessly.

And then the troubles with Burns started. And they were gone. All three.

As I said my memory may be all muddled.. and I could go and check dates and figures and revisit what really happened. But sometimes it is better to recall with the indefiniteness of a fan and the emotion of a fanatic… which is what I choose to do. Even though they went elsewhere, some successfully and some not, I shall always recall the excitement those guys brought to my team.

I long for the same again.

You can add poor 22 year old Jason Demers to the growing list of players who have seen their career’s ruined by their head coaches. Check out this verbal beat down by the Mike Babcock trained Todd McLellan.

“Obviously we made two mistakes and it’s in our net, but the third one’s the one that pissed me off more than anything,” the coach said to open his post-game scrum. “It’s a 2-2 game and you decide to pinch when it’s four on two? Absolutely unacceptable. It’s called game management and it was poor.”

“He’s in the NHL. Young, old it doesn’t matter,” he said. “He’s in the NHL. That’s a situation that you have to read.”

  4. SPATS says:

Well said, totally agree. The boys know their hard earned momentum was taken from them with the non-call on Pouliot and the suspect call on Pleks. But being the pros they are, they sucked it up and played against stacked odds… Would’ve been extra sweet if they could’ve hung on and scored a go ahead goal. But, the comeback was exceptional. We went nuts (all 21K+ who were there!)

How long does it take to Gel?

By the way, SK is averaging the same points per game as he did while he was in Montreal under JM’s influence. Even with his current hot streak. I dont know about Obyrne, his team is one of the worst defensive teams in the league. Cant compare. Its like saying he can play top line on the Isles, but not the Caps…

  7. sidhu says:

The Caps’ “system” is to skate around for a while, then rely on pure skill to win.  BB makes an emotional speech as if he has some impact on what the players do on the ice, the fact remains that he has no power.  He does not discipline Ovie at all and is at his performance’s mercy, essentially.

    The jig is up.

  12. sidhu says:

The Habs don’t seem to go after the most logical or intuitive choices — I don’t know many people who thought we’d get Moore last year, for example.  SK74 to Nashville is another one that no one predicted.  They tend to go off the radar.

You heard it here first: Habs get Chris Campoli to sure up the D.

  13. sidhu says:

If that’s the best that BB can do to inspire the Caps, he’s done.

Someone needs to say it again — RJ Umberger was right about the Caps, they don’t play the right way, teams are catching on to their style, and the Caps are being exposed as a team without true two-way capabilities.

If you saw the rest of the episode, you’d have noticed he did a lot of positive talk with the team that week.

Fact is right now, they’re outplaying their opponents most nights but just aren’t getting either goaltending or the bounces offensively.  We’ll see if he gets fired, but I’m skeptical this streak is going to last much longer.  I think next week’s 24/7 will have a bit more happy of an ending for the Caps.

Just because an attitude worked with the Pens doesn’t mean it will for the Caps.  Plenty of yellers have won Cups.

  20. DearyLeary says:

I agree with your assessment of Pitkanen.  I think that the two of them would be an overall upgrade for the year, but acquiring two contracts on the larger side while feasible for our cap position, I just worry about emptying our pick/prospect coffers in trying to acquire two rentals.

If we were able to learn that we could resign Pitkanen I’d definitely be looking into what it’d take to acquire him.

Pitkanen is extremly under rated IMO.

  26. CHasman says:

I thought the game was over at 3-1 so coming back to tie it made my night at that point.  Letting it get away really hurt, but that involved some bad luck and a chain of events that led to Philly regaining the lead.  Really it could have gone either way.  If the Flyers get called for the high stick on Pouliot right before the Pleks penalty then we are the ones with the PP.  Small things can turn losses into wins and vice versa.  All that being said, if everyone on the team hustled the way Pacioretty did last night I don’t think small things would have mattered.  I’d really like to see him score tonight so that confidence level doesn’t fizzle.  Also speaking of confidence I’d like to see Price bounce back with a big game to keep his confidence up there.  Goalies are especially susceptible (spelling B word)  to those nagging doubts and I’m not sure Carey is past having them yet.

Lol… you are from a completely different era :)

I am not sure about modern music, man. I can’t stand listening to radio cause they recycle same crap over and over again. At present I don’t know of any new metal (whatever metal genre) band that would be an attention grabber for its music. So i don’t know… I will probably die with Maiden, AC/DC, Metallica, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd (not metal), and some death metal bands I tend to listen too. Justine Bieber is just too heavy for me.

  35. Hockey Socks says:

Boudreau’s out after the Winter Classic. He reminds of Michel Therrien when he was with the Pens. He’s not the guy that can lead them to the cup. The Capitals are going through hard times and Boudreau’s throwing his guys under the bus, being an overall negative influence. Meanwhile, Crosby is lauding Bylsma for his positivity and energy when he took over as coach of the Penguins.

Boudreau’s lost the team and is taking his frustration out on them. The sooner the Capitals get rid of him and get a real coach in, the better off they’ll be.

  38. oshawahabsfan says:

  39. TommyB says:

I don’t understand anyone being surprised by Boudreau’s f-bomb rant.  It’s standard vocabulary with any pissed off coach.  I’ve been on both sides of that rant many times.  His uneasiness was no doubt due to the fact that there was a camera rolling, but to his credit he didn’t let that camera change the tongue-lashing his players no doubt deserved at that time.

  40. SeriousFan09 says:

i don’t think any coach in the NHL is on as thin ice as Boudreau. Burke always backs his coachs to the wall, Mcphee will be protecting his job and the owner is interested in taking his team further. They may not fire him before the WC, but if some Ws can’t be thrown together soon… it won’t be long after that ex-coachs will have phones ringing.

UNBELIEVABLE!  The CBC issue is a dead horse, I know, but I feel like I’m watching Bruins TV. Truly sickening. We played a great and very smart 1st period. I know Lapierre is a D-bag, the world knows that but why should he get into a pointless scrap which he will lose and give an energy bump to Boston? Why shouldn’t P.K. allow the bruins to take a pointless penalty? I realize we chirp and can be annoying to play but how on earth can they really justify their commentary?

  129. Samovich says:

How is that for respect a great LEGAL hit!! and The Boston Cry Babies , go after him, what a bunch of idiots , and CBC should be ashamed of themselves for having a one sided conversation about the Bruins. Love that Cammy commercial!

  270. thebigguy says:

    That Cammalleri commerical is phenomenal.

  271. tony d says:

Phew is right. Man I’ve got such a headache from watching that one….a nailbiter for sure but an important W.

Good effort all around except AK who’s still lost in a fog. As someone mentioned earlier, he’s become the new Kovalev. It’s gotta be the curse of the initials.

  272. RiverviewCanadien says:

    Pacioretty…that is all.

  273. showey47 says:

thomas kept them in it also. but the reffing was once again atrocious against us.

  274. habaholic68NJ says:

Great game.  Team is hanging in there.  Gomez is alive again.  MaxPac looks like a top 6 forward.  AK46 however, still looks asleep.  He should wake up before end of Feb or he may find himself as part of a package out of here.

  275. punkster says:

The refs can be frustrating but I find in watching other games and teams they’re just as bad as they were the last 2 years across the entire league. We just get upset because they look like they’re all going against us. We’d have to get Robert L and the boys to do some ref/stat analysis to prove anything but I doubt we’re getting it worse than other teams. Just my guess at this point.

  276. SeriousFan09 says:

PK Subban is such a jerk, going on and thanking Josh Gorges and Hal Gill for giving him pick-up advice in the last couple weeks I mean no mention of Dan Chorra and Mike “Elbows” Richards for telling him to sit and shut up…

Another day at the office in the Habs-hating NHL.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  277. notbigbird says:

You’re probably right, but it seems so consistent lately.

  281. Keith says:

I Love this type of hockey. The Bruins are without a doubt imo our biggest rival. If only we could get Quebec back in.

  282. punkster says:

Clearly he has issues with disrespect. Trade him while his value is high. DO IT PG!

  283. habsruleworld says:

    100% with ya there,

Glad to see I am not the only one who sees that BS

  284. habsruleworld says:

MAX PAC!! and the Gomez, Gionta line lives!!!!

Awesome to see , Hab fans could not have asked for better from Max Pac.

WHAT A HUGE SUBBAN HIT!!! Loved how Cample tried to rough up Subban after the hit, and Subban just shrugged him off, throwing him to the ice,,, Priceless!!!

Loved how AK jumped in front of Chara to stop him! and than flattened Lucic!

    Excellent Win!

  285. DearyLeary says:

I say that all the time, but I can’t get a high def RDS feed with our cable in the GTA.  What I’ve started doing is listen to the CJAD feed on internet radio, and watch the CBC high def feed.  Momesso is slightly less painful to listen to than the CBC crew.

  286. sidhu says:

Great game, with especially strong outtings by Max Power and Gomez.  We finally have a top six of offensive players and some true balance on the forward ranks.

If it weren’t for Thomas, we could have scored at least 4 more.

  289. habsruleworld says:

    Mr Punk re-read the post

Bad Luck Night,,, I agree completely, Poor Price had little chance on the goals, which were wicked deflections he basically had no chance on etc.

Believe is all the poster was saying dude

  290. StevieRay says:

A couple of real dick wads them 2. To be able to say and get away with the ” cockroach” term when used to describe PK & Laps was un believeable. Maybe it’s time the Molsons took CBC sports to task over these 2 idiots and their slanderous comments. There job should be to provide the TV audience with unbais analysis of the game . HNIC should not be used as a soapbox for these 2.. out off work, underachieversturds to express their views…

  294. DearyLeary says:

  295. showey47 says:

anybody listening to the cjad post game locker room interviews. They were playing the rocky theme song in the room for cammy.

  296. idle says:

There were some blatant misses tonight against the Habs (stick to Gill’s face, interference hit on Pouliot) and it does seem the calls have not gone our way lately, but if it was the Bruins who got that penalty shot call instead of Cammalleri we would be bitching non stop about it.

  297. Samovich says:

    Gigomax brilliant!

  298. DearyLeary says:

hahaha, no I tuned out pretty much as soon as the game ended.  That’s hilarious.

  299. BeachHabFan says:

  301. habsruleworld says:

  302. punkster says:

You may officially ignore my post…I misread yours…sorry :)

  303. habaholic68NJ says:

  304. JD_ says:

Sweet Jesus, can anyone tell me what Friday’s Lotto Max jackpot is? And what’s the age requirement? Where can I get this information?

Great team effort. Habs were behind more hits than even the mid-90s Clintons. MaxPac looks very comfortable and aware out there. Big improvement. Consistency’s the key.

The Subban Heatseeker continues to wreak destruction. You’ve been Subbanged, baby!

Was watchin’ RDS, as Cole is an immediate channel-changer, so didn’t catch any of Milbury’s deepset rage resultin’ from his post-traumatic stress disorder at havin’ had his skates handed to him oh so many times by the Habs over the course of his forgettable playin’ career. I hope he gets better.

Also hopin’ that’s the last time I gots to watch Cammy drop ‘em.

  305. habsruleworld says:

    thanks for admitting that

    no harm done

  306. filincal says:

    “P.K. turtling” according to Stock…

What a clown, and Milbury…well those two should have there own show. Would make a great comedy; throw in Galley and Healy as well to make it a quartet of “LOSERS”.

  310. BeachHabFan says:

great, momentum-turning hit but i don’t like how he completely turns away at the moment of impact – he basically backs into the guy at full speed. i’m concerned someone’s gonna catch him with a stick or elbow in the back of the head one day, even by accident.

  311. VancouverHab says:

And “kyoo-dough-s to Cammi” he mis-pronounces it.

  312. HardHabits says:

I watched the game chez mon ami on HD in 5.1 digital audio. The beauty is that in 5.1 digital the commentary is on the middle speaker. Mute that and it’s like you’re there man. Awesome. No oyoyoy. No hohoho. No “et le but.” No Joel saying “cette but a faite mal.” Just the crowd. It’s awesome because you can hear a lot of background chitter-chatter, in French of course. Hilarious some of the stuff that’s said where they have the crowd microphones.

  313. Number31 says:

    Yea. Consistently bad.

  447. Graves says:

Good God. Habs play an incredible first period and all Stock and Milbury can do is slam them and complain that the Bruins aren’t getting any calls. It shouldn’t surprise me by now, but man, it’s infuriating. I wish I got RDS.

  448. thorandresson says:

  450. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

Never see you guys talk crap against Laffs?

  451. Thenumber11 says:

So Milbury and Stock go on and on about P.K. not fighting and how it’s terrible, and he needs to earn some respect and points in his locker room… While I think P.K. dropping them in that situation isn’t terrible, it was one second after the PP ended that we scored, the PP P.K. drew. How do you argue with that?

  452. habsfaninboston says:

Surprisingly, the homers on NESN had nothing bad to say about the hit nor the sequence of events that followed.

  453. RJB says:

Stock says “we may sound bias” for the bruins. Ya you do sound bias! Did you hear what Milbury said about Lapierre and Subban? Because PK didn’t want to fight after a GOOD hit, he should be punched? Morons, they are all morons. Not once did they say anything about the Habs, all bruins. What a joke

Two guys run into each other. The guy in red gets a penalty.

  552. RGM says:

Enough’s enough. The following has just been sent to the CBC – unfortunately their ombudsman doesn’t handle HNIC but this has gone to their complaints department.

    Dear CBC,
During the first period of the Montreal Canadiens/Boston Bruins game tonight, Canadiens defenceman PK Subban delivered a clean and crushing body check to Bruins forward Brad Marchand. The hit, as noted above, was perfectly clean – after the play concluded several Bruins players wanted to fight Subban, who was not interested and skated away. He made a hockey play, and that should have been the end of it.

However, the CBC commentators during the intermission decided that the play was deserving of considerable discussion targeting Subban and essentially calling him a coward for not fighting. Not surprisingly, Mike Milbury and PJ Stock were most vociferous in their condemnation of not only Subban, but of another Canadiens player, Max Lapierre, an agitator whose role is to get under the skin of his opponents. These are two men that have often railed against what they call the “pansification” of hockey, yet when a player makes a big hockey play, they condemn him for not doing something illegal that is penalized by a major penalty. They thus picked up on the long-running theme of another CBC commentator, Don Cherry, in proclaiming that Subban does not have any respect for his fellow players, and needs to earn the respect of not only his opponents but his own teammates. They didn’t proclaim, as Cherry has, that somebody is “going to get him”  but they continued the ongoing theme targeting Subban.

What do all three of PJ Stock, Mike Milbury, and Don Cherry have in common? They are all former members of the Boston Bruins. To have these people commenting on anything to do with the Montreal Canadiens lacks credibility because their bias is heavily pronounced and hardly concealed.  The CBC prides itself on journalistic integrity and fairness; these men do not have any semblance of fairness when it comes to discussing the Montreal Canadiens.

As a Canadiens fan, I have for years had to endure listening to Cherry slagging my favourite team without a balancing voice. Canadiens games are, on those occasions that they are shown on Hockey Night in Canada, often called by Bob Cole – Canada’s most famous Toronto Maple Leafs fan. I am just old enough to remember a time that the legendary Dick Irvin Jr. was on the broadcast team during HNIC to call Canadiens games. One could tell that he actually liked the team, unlike many of his colleagues that are products of other organizations that have been the Canadiens’ rivals over the course of many decades. However, he was moved off the broadcast team, and ever since there has been a noticeable imbalance in broadcasting whenever the Canadiens have been featured on CBC.

I’m a reasonable person. I don’t think it’s necessary that the CBC should hire a pro-Canadiens cheerleader to add pro-Canadiens comments to the Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts. However, what was once mildly amusing has become incredibly irritating; while Cherry is and remains a caricature, his calls for somebody to “get” Subban has sparked a dangerous trend that has been picked up by his colleagues on the program. Subban is a young and exciting player that is respected by his teammates and loved by many Canadiens fans. To hear somebody calling for him to be injured is despicable. I am beyond frustrated listening to Coach’s Corner and the other intermission panels. Indeed, even though I am almost entirely unilingual and speak only a small amount of French, I often turn to the French channel RDS and leave it there not only during the game but also the intermissions. I would rather practice my diminished second language skills than listen to anti-Canadiens propaganda spoken in my first language. I think that many of my fellow Canadiens fans would agree with my sentiment that something must be done to restore a degree of balance to the HNIC broadcasts.

    Sincerely,
    RGM

    Go Habs Go!

  553. RGM says:

Of course I had to hit Submit two minutes before Milbury referred to the Habs as cockroaches.

    Go Habs Go!

  554. thebigguy says:

    This isn’t politics. “Anti-Canadien propoganda?”

  555. Aybara says:

To be fair.. PJ Stock is both a Montreal native and played for the Habs.

  556. Thenumber11 says:

Just sayin- from last years playoffs to the games played this year on CBC, I’ve enjoyed Cole’s calls. He gets excited for the play, and despite the errors made, his calls can be amazing, and he praises those who deserve it: including our Canadiens.

  557. andrewberkshire says:

And right after you say this, Milbury goes WAY over the line and calls the Habs cockroaches. What is this, Rwanda in the 90′s?

  558. showey47 says:

Great letter. I used to do the same thing with the long letter but now i’m at the point where this is all i want to say to them.

    Dear CBC

    Go f#$k yourself.

    showey

  559. PeterD says:

Well said RGM…I’m with you on that.

CBC and Hockey Night in Canada or more accurately Hockey Night in Toronto is dead to me.

Don Cherry and his negative archaic Europhobic rants are long past due and need to be taken out back and shot.  He is an embarassment to hockey and the Canadian way of life…time to move on into the 21st century and take that old bag of wind off the air.

i’m hopin for same lineup tonight. PK’s peewee style drives me nuts (TWO HANDS ON YOUR STICK! AIIEE!), but when he’s good he’s a game changer, and i don’t think picard was that bad.

our kill didn’t look tht bad, but if pyatt is on insted of eller, does that 4th philly goal go in? i think not. having lots of young talent up front is a nice problem to have, and eller seems to have far more offensive skills than pyatt, but we really missed him last night. maybe it’s time for Ak to have a rest?

hoping for same pressure, better D and better Carey. would like some old-style rumbling but i have me doubts.

  574. SeriousFan09 says:

If Spacek had the sense to stay back from the PK rush, or  not do that stupid pass in the first place (Subban doing it as a rookie as one thing, Spacek as an 800-game vet…) that led to Pleks slashing call on JVR that all wouldn’t have happened. Eller got caught, but Spacek wears the goat horns on Goal #4.

  577. showey47 says:

Actually i don’t expect anything from the officials. From what it looks like we have been at the ass end of the PK/PP ratio for years.

    Two-to-one in shots — cool.

Anyone see the graphic on season to date S.o.G.? Gio has a huge lead at 129….

  584. notbigbird says:

I’m very happy for the third goal. I actually get nervous when our boys are flying like this because I think Price and Halak before him thrives on lots of work. Mind you, it’s a nice problem to have.

  585. JVF says:

    YESSSSsssss! Atta go, Max-Pac.

Can I just say, very quietly, almost in a whisper, and not at all negatively, that CP’s play these last four periods has got me a wee bit worried?

I’m sure he’ll have an opportunity in the next two periods to redeem himself and restore my confidence in him.

  586. Castor says:

Yeah I’ve been whispering that same thing to myself… let’s see the next two as his confidence grows back…hope.

At 40 years of age, with over 1400 games and a hall-of-fame career under his belt, Lidstrom has finally scored a hat trick:

Nick Lidstrom is like a bottle of scotch, better with age. Detroit made the best 3rd-round pick in league history in 1989.

Montreal got the Breezer and Red-Light Raicot out of that year. (and that is how you draft bitch you amateurs:-P)

  589. RGM says:

I didn’t say “anti-Canadien propaganda.” I said “anti-Canadiens propaganda.” With an S. As in the team that plays in Montreal’s lovely Bell Centre. Smarten up.

    Go Habs Go!

  590. thebigguy says:

I’m aware. I forgot to type the S. If I was talking about citizenship, I’d have used an A. To get this worked up over a loser GM and a loser player is extreme, to say the least.

  591. RGM says:

I guess you and I have very different conceptions of what constitutes “extreme” – writing a letter to request change on my national broadcaster that my tax dollars fund doesn’t approach anything remotely close to extreme to me. Going down the street and throwing a Molotov cocktail at the CBC building is extreme, in my view. But wow, letter writing = extreme, at least for some. Guess you probably don’t want to buy my book eh?

    Go Habs Go!

  592. thebigguy says:

Ironically, I’ve organized letter writing campaigns on political issues:)
But that’s exactly it, maybe you should use your energy for more important issues than Mike Milbury.

  593. SeriousFan09 says:

But he’s a Bruin in his own eyes and like many, thinks the Habs slighted him and his insignificant career.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  594. RGM says:

Good for him – it’s still readily apparent from his commentary that he’s wearing Bruins underoos.

    Go Habs Go!

  595. Aybara says:

I dunno, I see it more as a tough guy identifying more with the Bruins style of play. It’s not wrong for someone to support their style of hockey and Cherry, Stock, and Milbury are all cut from the same mold on that count…

The real problem is that CBC doesn’t have any personalities to balance the rock’em sock’em supporters who naturally are not pro-Canadien.

  596. OneTimer says:

cut from the same cloth, or made from the same mould, make a choice there buddy ;)

  597. Aybara says:

I think you got the point….

  598. Aybara says:

    Agree.

Maybe it’s the curse of being the CBC’s first choice announcer, but I find that Hughson has gone the way of old Cole with his Leaf bias…It also might help that the lead announcer has to commentate the leafs every Saturday night and they basically end up cheering for them out of sheer hopelessness.

  599. thebigguy says:

Andrew, from what I’ve seen, normally you’re an intelligent poster so I’ll put this in a respectful manner.

But to compare a hockey broadcast to calls to genocide is, um, hyperbolic at best.

  600. RGM says:

LOL I slapped my forehead right after hitting the Submit button having missed that one. Ah well.

    Go Habs Go!

  602. shootdapuck says:

Milbury and Stock what a joke!

The CBC has gone from a Laff lov-in to to Bruin love-in!

Pathetic to think tax dollars pay for this crap!

“The three stars as selected by Red Fisher of the Montreal Star:
    1st star: Henri Richard
    2nd Star: Doug Harvey
    3rd Star: Jacques Plante

Final score Detroit Red Wings 5 Montreal Canadiens 3″

  603. thorandresson says:

Is that surprising, I think the Leafs and Bruins might be in cahoots.  How else would you explain the Kessel and Tukka Raask for Raycroft deals?

  604. Thenumber11 says:

My favourite was when Milbury said, “If I was the coach…” and I lol’d because there’s a reason he’s not still coaching.

  605. Hockey Socks says:

    Boone:

Milbury and Stock bashing Lapierre for being gutless and saying he deserves a “premeditated” attack. Milbury say he hopes the Bruins are planning their ambush.

They also bash Subban – Milbury saying that Subban should’ve gone with Carcillo last night – and calling Subban a coward for not fighting after his clean hit. They also bashed the referees for the penalty shot call and missed calls against the Habs.

  606. VancouverHab says:

I await the H-I/O journalists & commentators giving Mssrs Milbury & Stock a more intense & protracted hate-fest than they gave Don Cherry for less….

    Just sayin…..

  607. avatar_58 says:

You know what amuses me? Had subban fought they’d have been all over him for lack of respect, fighting vets like that. Here’s a clue – it was a clean hit. He didn’t expect such a BOOM, but he saw Subban coming. No blindside. So why the HELL would he drop the gloves? Go ahead, take a penalty B’s. See where it lead you?

  608. andrewberkshire says:

CBC calling out a star player for NOT fighting a goon after a clean hit is the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard on the CBC. Even Don Cherry wouldn’t say something like that.

  609. avatar_58 says:

I would pay to see Laps fight Milbury

  610. SeriousFan09 says:

Habs fans, enjoy this video of Robinson handing Milbury his ***.

  611. axxerd says:

Yeah and after Stock said “We’ll suck up to the Great Canadien fans now”, Milbury responds with something like “don’t speak for me”.  In other words…he doesn’t agree that Habs fans are great

  618. JVF says:

I can’t believe what I’m hearing on the Habs from Mike Milbury and PJ Stock on HNIC. It’s a scandal! They’re completely dissing the Habs, starting with Subban and Lapierre.

Isn’t the CBC meant to be our National network?

Milbury, I can understand, but Stock? What’s his problem? He’s from Pointe-Claire!

Is it because we released him early in his career?

He’d never be this biased on L’Antichambre… Tsk!

  619. novahab says:

Was there a worse cheap shot player than Milbury and he complaing about Max and PK are you kidding me.

  620. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

It’s actually embarrassing that these are best the reporters CBC could find. What a shame.

  621. SeriousFan09 says:

It’s not about finding the best, it’s about getting jobs for like-minded people who had mediocre careers and can’t get real jobs because they’re not actually that useful for anything. CBC is an employment center for people who can’t get jobs in NHL organizations or TSN (or were fired from TSN or hockey organizations).

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  622. thorandresson says:

They’re not reporters, they’re far from it.  They’re just hockey personalities, loud mouths with opinions who played the game, just like Cherry.

  623. TheChangeling says:

Yeah, that’s a possibility. It’d be a little tough publicly scratching one of the league’s highest paid players….. whatever happened, its turned out to be for the best. I still have no idea exactly how Gomez got injured. Whatever, he’s playing up to his abilites! Hopefully he can mum some of the hating here…..

  624. Keith says:

Had the better chances. Lock this down Habs!

  625. Les-Habitants says:

Boyd demoted – at this point, I’d say this is the best thing for him.  Now he’ll finally be able to play some hockey.

Pouliot and Max-Pac:  I thought both looked good in the top 6.  They have a similar skillset, good hands, size, and speed, and complemented their linemates well.  Andrei, who has better hands and skills, should take note.

D looked rough, it just seemed they had trouble clicking all through the night.  Should be interesting to see if Weber gets back in there.  If he does, do they split up Hammer and Spacek?  That would allow Spacek to move back to RD, his natural position.  Subban/Hammer, Weber/Spacek could be a good combo.  But then again, Picard has been one of the more consistent guys on the back-end.

Man…I hate the Bruins, all will be forgiven if we can get a good W tonight

CBC coverage is wretched – unwatchable during the game and especially between the periods. I called 6-2 Habs last night. What a hit by PK. What a game by MaxPac. I hope somebody crunches Lucy.

  628. Malreg says:

Plekanec really needs to work on his faceoffs.  He gets kicked out of almost half of them!  Good thing Cammy used to play Center, and is actually pretty good at draws.

  629. Hockey Socks says:

Pleks is sometimes too aggressive for his own good. He’s like a pitbull.

  630. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

Man, Thomas has been GOOD! This could’ve been 6 or 7-2 by now

  631. MathMan says:

AK had a good game — 5 shots, 3 scoring chances, 3 hits, and 14 minutes of icetime. I’m not sure why him skipping practice should be considered odd, I don’t see how he is in danger.

  632. JIMVINNY says:

If that puck sits down, Pleks scores.

  633. punkster says:

Never in doubt, right?

Total domination.

A 2-0 lead squandered.
