Well, that was no fun

Certainly no fun for Patrick V. Hickey, who had a worse night than the Canadiens.

The Gazette’s intrepid beat man parked his Honda Civic – 564,000 km and purring like a kitten – at the Wachovia Center.

Because the car has Quebec plates, Flyers’ fans slashed the tires – and stole the plate!

Two Canadian TV trucks were vandalized as well.

And Marc-Antoine Godin of La Presse Tweets: “2 PHI fans yelled at TV guy ‘go back home, you
f@#$#& French-Canadian!’ One had Briere jersey, the other a Gagné”

• Canadiens have tough hill to climb – Stubbs

“We just didn’t have it” – Gill

No credit for Gainey – Todd

• Stubbs on Michael Leighton

A new bully on Broad Street – Roy MacGregor

Flyers mojo carries over from Bruins series – Michael Farber

No signs of Philly letdown – Scott Burnside

• At least the Bulldogs won

And Hockey Night in Canada ran a nice Elliotte Friedman feature on Brian Gionta.

The Wachovia center is the worst place to go period. Fans of other teams won’t go there, I’ve met fans that were they for playoffs 2 years ago. They had to deal with people kicking their seats dumping Beer on them and security not giving a rats ass. During Playoffs stay away from Philly they are the worst fans in Hockey!

Based on the two back to back games during the regular season where we got humiliated I think it will happen again. Philly was the worst team we could face at this point. At the same time, maybe this is a good thing. The people upstairs can see that size does matter and we needed someone to replace BGL for teams like Philly and others in the West. For this team to improve just a little more you need at least two badasses in there because this team doesn’t intimidate anyone. At the same time, that is the reason why it is ridiculous to try and beat this team at their own game hitting and taking penalties. Crashing the net is another story though. That is a must.

We live in the Eastern suburbs of Philadelphia so I’m not super familiar with the Aston area but it looks like it is fairly close to I 95 which shouldn’t be too bad of a route to get into the city on the weekends.  Traffic isn’t awful unless there’s an accident or construction I don’t know about.

As far as places to eat with kids you could always try the standard tourist trip to Pat’s Steaks or Geno’s in South Philadelphia (9th and Passyunk) or Tony Luke’s (39th E. Oregon Ave) for cheesesteaks. “Water ice / Italian ice” and a soft pretzel are a good bet as well.  If you’ve got a GPS on you, try a search for “Rita’s” for the water ice.

Todd’s points are legitimate. What a bunch of whiners. Oooooh. Bad Jack Todd has some criticism for Bob Gainey. How dare you? You awful man!!! Gimme a break. He’s only repeating what he read here. I guess it just pisses you off to see those arguments validated in his article.

This playoff run has been great, so far, but it appears the Habs have hit a brick wall. Whatever happens this playoffs a lot will ride on what steps the Habs do to keep the unsigned players they have and what happens with any young and upcoming prospects (if there are any).

One thing for sure, the Caps, Pens and Hawks will be contenders while the Habs’ll be question marks.

I still think the way to build a team is via the draft and to do that a team needs to finish 20th-30th for a few years. I hope I am wrong and that the Habs get stronger in the upcoming years. Given the salary cap and the Habs poor positioning come draft day I am highly skepticle that that will occur.

  17. HardHabits says:

Some would think that BG had a crystal ball. He himself admits his moves were a crap shoot.

Many of us have been saying the same things Todd said. Gainey did good with the new leadership core. He astutely did not resign Koivu. He did however want both Komsarek and Kovalev back. He also dropped the ball big time with Price. Price should’ve been handled the same way Subban was this year.

If the Habs win two games this series I’ll be surprised. However if they win 2 they should be able to win 4. We’ll know by game 4 whether or not it’ll time to take out the brooms. Last game was a demolishing of the system.

  18. pmaraw says:

Game two will be different, there is no way Habs will come out like this in game two. It feels like the extneded break they had caught up with them, and the emotion high of the flyers after thier game 7 win was used to thier advantage. They will come crashing down when habs win, and that will be pretty much it for the Flyers.

You don’t blame a GM for a shitty outing by a team. You blame him for assembling a team that can’t compete/make the playoffs. WOW!! Does Todd ever tee off on Gainey…he’s right though.  Give credit where it’s due, to JM and the rest of the coaching staff, for recognizing who the real number one goalie is, and running with him.  Unfortunately, Price IS Gainey’s greatest blunder, and, the destruction  of a diamond chip prospect lies 100% with him.  Crosby, Stamkos, were monitored closely in their jump to the NHL right from Junior. Price, an immature kid, was not, and the results are obvious.  Even Carbo wanted to send him to Hamilton for seasoning, and, it wound up costing him his position.  Price has had several opportunities, in these playoffs to step up, and he’s dropped the ball, time to move him, he’s permanently damaged goods. Thanks Bob.

Started off slow just like in Pittsburgh.  If, we lose the next game than we can start getting concerned.  But, I like our chances tomorrow night.  We’ve always bounced back and I think tomorrow will be no different.  Jaro always comes back huge after getting pulled, and the compete/intensity level will be there as well.  We just have to be outshot and we’ll be fine.  JM will get O’byrne back in there, and MAB will be put back on the 4th line, with Darche or Pouliot drawing out!

It ruins the fun of being a hockey fan. The best part about being a fan, aside from watching your team win, is teasing other teams fans. But it should be in kind spirit. I went to Boston for a Habs game few years ago and their fans were great. They would chirp us, we’d chirp them back, but it was all in good fun. And I bet in Philly there are alot of great fans like that too, but it only takes a couple of idiots to make the whole bunch of them look stupid. Maybe Price turning out to be a bust so far has nothing to do with if he was a back-up or not or if he would have been in Hamilton or not. How would Price being a back-up his first year or so  have made him live up to being this great goalie? Maybe he’s just not that good to begin with, period. Maybe he was overrated as a Junior and just hasn’t developed as one would have thought. It’s not like all players who have great Junior careers and are drafted high,  become great NHL players. Their are a million examples of guys with all the potential and pedigree in the world who just don’t make it in the NHL for whatever reason. Maybe Price is one of them.

  69. forskis says:

Regarding the Jack Todd article…for those of you refusing to give Gainey any credit by praising Jack Todd for not falling for revisionist history (I think it was you TripleX)…please see the below link when Price first came up:

Sounds like Jack Todd bought into Price as well…so please, do not give Jack Todd ANY credit…he is guilty of revising his OWN history…AND he based it on the same facts as many others did:  every test that Price was thrown at, he had passed.

In any case, this is not a Halak v. Price thing…that issue is settled for these playoffs…this new issue is Credit Gainey v. No Not Credit Gainey…and for you folks who follow the team closely, Jack Todd should not be the example to follow…he talks like many of the posters on here…

No he isn’t.  Never played, must be another J Todd.  Here is his own biography from the Gazette website:

For the past 10 years, Jack Todd has been sports columnist of the Gazette.

He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, where he was a scholarship athlete in track and field, specializing in the high jump, triple jump and 400 meters.

After working for the Akron Beacon-Journal, Detroit Free Press and Miami Herald, Todd left the U.S. during the Vietnam War and settled first in Vancouver, where he was a general assignment reporter for the Vancouver Sun. After stints with Radio-Canada International in Montreal and several years spent trying to write the Great American Novel, Todd joined the Gazette in 1986 as a copy editor on the sports desk and spent four years as city columnist before moving to sports, where he has covered two World Cup soccer tournaments and five Olympic Games.

Todd won the National Newspaper Award for sportswriting in 1999, an honour for which he has been nominated three times. His book, The Taste of Metal, was short-listed for a Governor General’s Award and won the Mavis Gallant Award for non-fiction. In addition to his column duties, he is currently at work on a lengthy novel set in Nebraska and Wyoming during the 19th Century.

My bad, still he is an American, yes? If not, he’s painfully bad as a hockey writer just the same.

When a player plays it’s the coach. Not the GM.”

Already forgot that Gainey sacked Corbo and took over the coaching job himself last year when we get swept by the Bruins? Not only that, Gainey went with Price loss after loss until it was basically over.

It’s because of this that we should all be glad that Gainey is toast, since otherwise this Cinderella run would never have happened . Gainey would have sacked Jaques Martin just as he sacked Corbo and he would have put in his favorite son in nets until the Caps would have slaughtered us. Thankfully, Halak begged to differ and had a different vision for us.

  80. MontrealAtheist says:

It was pure luck that we made the playoffs in the first place, courtesy of a loser point against the Leafs in the last game. That’s hardly the result of a genius GM planning a miraculous Cup run.

As we have seen yesterday, the team that Gainey built is capable of losing 0-6 against the Flyers just as it is capable of winning 5-2 in Pittsburgh against the Penguins.

Hmmmm, same team but different results? Hmmmm, could it be possible that there is more to winning a game than signing the people? Hmmmmmm

  81. MontrealAtheist says:

“And the fact that Gainey went out and replaced his scorer with a guy who scored 40 goals last year, yet of course BG had NO IDEA Camma could score in the playoffs.”

Guess what, Stamkos had the most goals in the regular season (along with Cindy) and never made it to the playoffs. And the other top scorers of the regular season, Ovi and Cindy, never made it past rounds 1 and 2 of the playoffs, respectively.

Signing players with good regular season scoring records is neither or guarantee to make the playoffs nor that they keep on scoring in the playoffs.

“In the END his article he says the Credit goes to GILL, CAMMA, GIO, SPACEK and GORGES. ALL PLAYERS BG brought in……  SO no why give the GM credit for the guys he put on the TEAM?

What about the guy who signed BG and made him GM? Based on your logic George Gillett should be worshiped as a god for signing BG in the first place.

Besides, signing a player is no guarantee that he will deliver. How many players did Gainey sign throughout the years who didn’t live up to the expectations?

I’ve been whining about the reffing just as much as anyone, but I really don’t think those calls get made in a game that isn’t already decided.  I think the refs were just trying to prevent a brawl.  I don’t like the calls, but I don’t like our chances of brawling with the likes of Pronger either.

    You know what’s really funny?

How most of the “experts” and “analysts” are a bunch of salami-eating douchebags. Going into the series vs the Flyers, they all predicted a tight series going 6 or 7 games for sure. With good reason, because it will be like that. They aregued we had the best goaltender in the world right now, and that Philly found their stride in round 2. Basically, with all that these teams had done so far, we’d be in for one heck of a series…

Now all of a sudden following last night’s game, these same “experts” are saying it’s gonna be a Philly rout, and MTL has no chance. I just find it really funny, I’m sorry. If you are an “expert”, you were able to see that the Habs simply didn’t play last night; they laid a giant, Godzilla-size goose egg. It happens, especially when you have played 14 straight games of solid hockey in 28 days. It’s human nature. The Flyers went through that rough patch vs the Bruins, and lost 3 straight games.

But, the “experts” don’t see that. They base their opinions game-by-game (sounds like Habs fans, right?), and now it’s apparently gonna be a sweep by the Flyers. They’re too big, strong, and Michael Leighton is going to get 6 shutouts in this series alone. Like seriously, if you’re an expert, tell it how it is. The Habs didn’t show up, and the Flyers did 100%. If you weren’t able to see that last night, you ain’t no expert. It won’t be a sweep, it’s going 6 or 7. I’m even willing to bet the Habs have their strongest game of the plyoffs tomorrow night, and Halak returns to form. We’ve seen this resurgence too often from our boys vs better opponents, and there’s no sign they’re gonna give up this far into the playoffs…

And to think we as Habs fans are bipolar…….

  85. SLONCOLD says:

like u said, they laid an egg. Habs took a bunch of bad penalties which hurt them. Halak was human yesterday. In other games he was able to bail out some mistakes made, no so yesterday. Leighton wasn’t tested enough and didn’t have to work too hard for the shut out either…

JM will adapt and i’m sure we’ll see a much better effort next game

They were terrible,, from Halak to Cammalleri, back to Subban. But yesterday was still one of the best days of my life.

One question for all the experts here…
    - Wouldn’t it be nice to have a mean BGL and a happy Sergei playing right now?

    GO HABS GO!

  87. joeybarrie says:

Just when i thought Jack Todd couldnt be any more ridiculous. He goes and proves me wrong. It’s astonishing to me that people actually believe that the GM sticks his nose into the coachs room and make the decisions for him. When a player plays it’s the coach. Not the GM.

Honestly, how STUPID can you be if you don’t give credit to the guy that brought ALL the players in (INCLUDING HALAK) He is saying we traded away or let go of players that would have helped us win last night. WELL WHAT ABOUT THE LAST TIME WE PLAYED THE FLYERS???????  WHERE THE HELL WERE THEY THEN????Begin was a minus 7 with 1 point in his playoffs, what did he do for the Bruins against these Flyers???

In what stretch of the mind is PHILLY such a great team, and the Habs arent. In the regular season by these standards then PHILLY wouldn’t be in the playoffs either. AM I WRONG or do they have the EXACT same amount of points????

And to come out ans say Gainey didn’t know these players were playoff players just shows how incredibly DUMB his article is. UM Gill won the Cup LAST YEAR, GIO AND GOMEZ won together. They have always been consistent playoff players. And the fact that Gainey went out and replaced his scorer with a guy who scored 40 goals last year, yet of course BG had NO IDEA Camma could score in the playoffs.

I mean INJURIES killed our season. Anyone with a PEA in his empty head knows that. We have missed our best player for HALF the games this season. ALSO injuries have hurt the Flyers too. But of course they get a pass in Jack’s LESS THAN PEA sized marble in his head.

To say he INHERITED a mid pack team is just plain stupidity. When Gainey took over his best players other than Koivu were a 40 year old Gilmore, Yannick Perrault, Jan Bulis, Andreas Dackell, Donald Audette, and Oleg Petrov… They missed the playoffs 4 out of 5 seasons. UM YEAH MID PACK………What a frickin IDIOT.

Then he left in the season where we are in the top 4 of the playoffs, and 2 seasons earlier came in first in the East. Made the playoffs 4 out of 5 seasons…  I wouldnt say MID PACK. But I know ALOT would.

In the END his article he says the Credit goes to GILL, CAMMA, GIO, SPACEK and GORGES. ALL PLAYERS BG brought in……  SO no why give the GM credit for the guys he put on the TEAM???? THAT WOULD BE STUPID.

And to ignore Gomez’ help this playoffs. ONLY THE GUY WHO HAS THE MOST ASSISTS ON THE TEAM….

I think this might be the absolute DUMBEST article I have read this season. How in the WORLD does Jock Todd get paid to write this NONSENSE. His salary at $1 is infinitely more of a overpayment that Gomez’ contract even if it was written 20 years ago…

A TOOL? In order to be a tool you have to actually be useful. What a smack in the face to newspaper journalism. Wish he had of stayed in the USA. He could write for the National Enquirer. I MEAN EVEN the article written that Elvis is still alive and is having Micheal Jackson baby has more common sense. What an ABSOLUTE DUMBA**.

  88. SeriousFan09 says:

Every single guy on this team should be at that optional practice today. Not to suffer, because by this time of year it’s not about making players pay for a game like that. It’s abotu focus and commitment. The leaders on this team should make sur every guy is there showing his teammates he is committed to putting in a better effort and winning the next one. Like some others have said, I think Halak will bounce back and we will be fine in this series. Their pp won’t score goals every game, just like Pit’s did in game 1 and then slowed down. And Leighton is not going to post another shut-out so easily. The people of Philadelphia are probably the most shameful sports fans in the world. Worse than Habs fans or Raiders fans or English soccer fans. Some of the things these people do are just beyond civility.

WOW…I’ve never, ever seen a worse call in my life. If anyone here watched game7 of the PHI-BOS series, the last few minutes of the 3rd period was worse than watching UFC. There could have been 15 penalities on each shift, and easy/obvious ones to call. Yet, none were given out.

But last night, Gomez practically poked Pronger, probably just to ask him where they were going for beers later on. And the ref called a slash instantly. That “slash” wouldn’t even merit a Crosby dive…

It really is sad, the quality of officiating has gone straight down the drain…

When it comes to Farber and SI in general, when it comes to hockey, it pays to keep in mind, that the perspective of an American Hockey writer is typical of sport reporters that a) have never played the game (let’s face it it helps to have played the game)and b) that is writing to people who have never played the game. As such, take what SI and their so-called hockey experts say, and file it under the “ignorant but pompus” file. SI so, does not get hockey, Farber’s story, crappy as  it is,  will find itself on the last page of the magazine with other such notable sports as darts and suffle board. I cancelled my subscription immediately after it became clear to me that, besides their cheap free calculator/phone book tech toy offer with your subscription, they understand and convey, so little insight when it comes to hockey, it is insulting to any red blooded Canuck. Suffice to say, that, if an American SI hockey writer was asked if they agree or disagree with the following statement: all NHL goals look alike, but, all basketball dunks are magificent works of art; they would agree. These are the type of people employed by SI to act as experts in the sport of hockey…nuff said.

His is much higher than the teams, I assure you, as Price has a pretty poor record this year in terms of wins/losses.

Gorges, to the remarkable rookie Subban.”

And in a PREVIOUS quote from the SAME article says “Gainey made some good moves – among his best, the decision to deal Craig
Rivet for Josh Gorges. Or drafting P.K. Subban. He also made some
terrible moves, but the worst damage was not with trades or draft
choices, but with the way he handled some of his young players, Price in

  140. Ian Cobb says:

In our own end, I have noticed the Flyer’s D hold the puck long enough to suck our wingers up to the blue line to cover them. Leaving three of there players down low with less coverage.

Then they deliver the puck to the front of the net or off the boards to their down low winger. Giving them puck controll and bodies in front of Halak.

This is not a patriotic jab or an attempt to start a HIO battle.  Remember, I am American…

If it’s okay for Flyers fans to chant USA USA, basically turning this into an anti-Canada/Quebec thing, then is it okay for Habs fans to boo the Star Spangled Banner?

Just curious as to everyone’s thoughts on this.

The Habs lose 6-0 after outshootin’ the opposition 28-25 and, apparently, the series is over. Admittedly, the majority of the Hab shots were the outcome of textbook perimeter hockey but, seriously, some major chillaxing is in order.

Being outhit 27-19 by Philly isn’t even that disturbing.

Unless, of course, we are to assume that the Habs collective SV% is permanently headed to 76% and, in addition, the heart and effort that took down the mighty Caps and Pens has dissipated.

    Wouldn’t bet on it.

For some reason, I didn’t find Todd’s column this morning particularly annoying.

In typical fashion, it is self-contradicting – one of his trademark fails – and oozing with more conjecture than some of the lamest HI/O content.

At the same time, however, it has absolutely no edge to it. In fact, it’s almost goofy. I suppose that’s what happens when an attempt to drive readership via controversy butts up against a pressing deadline. Some proofreading was probably in order.

It’s one thing to procrastinate with the cowboy books, Jack, but at the rate some of your obviously self-destructive habits are catching up with you, you don’t want to start ignoring your column cutoff.

USA USA USA is really in defense to us booing their anthem. Just like OLE OLE OLE OLE. They stuck it to us but we deserved it. FAIR is FAIR…

That’s how you fit them, like Hossa. So his cap hit will be 6.7, but he will be geeting paid 8 mill. He’s happy, and so is the team.

The weird thing is the Flyers have more Canadian players than any other team – always have. It’s a team policy.

  157. TripleX says:

The Caps and Pens are both highly skilled teams that are not particularly physical and do not have punishing Dmen.  The Flyers are perfectly built to crush a small skating team like the Habs.  The Flyers love to score off the cycle game and crowd the net, two aspects of the game the Habs have trouble defending.

The Caps and Pens both had two key players for the defense to concentrate on.  The Flyers are very balanced throughout the roster and with Carter soon to come back will only get more dangerous.

I am not throwing in the towel but JM has to play the players that give his team the best chance to compete.  For example not playing his only big physical Dman and pairing PK Suban with MAB is just dumb.

JM has to get over this fascination of having MAB on the roster.  We need an effective HITTING fourth line to compete with the Flyers.  Moen and Metro need to step up and form a physical line and if Darche won’t hit what good is he?

no need to jump ship, or the wagon, im not to concerned about last nights ass whooping, we took care of the east’s 2 power houses, halak will have a bounce back game tomorrow which we are very use to, the boys will adapt to phillys playing style just like we did the two previous series, let the sea of orange enjoy they’re game 1 win because tomorrow nights game will be completely different, who would agree to sit pouilot tomorrow and insert sergei? and also minimize MAB ice time to the powerplay only and get o’bryne in there we can def use his size,

    thoughts?

  164. HabsoluteFan says:

Panic mode today because of one loss.  One game means this team is too small and can’t compete against the Flyers.  This team will bounce back tomorrow night, make no mistake about it.  They we’re suppose to fold after losing a 4-1 lead in Game 2 against the Caps. They were suppose to roll over and die when trailing 3-1 against that same team.  They were done after losing Markov and game 1 6-3 against a much stronger Pens team.  And now they can’t possibly compete agaisnt a much bigger team in the Flyers.  Gimme a break, the boys know they didnt show up last night and will be better tomorrow.  It’s the beauty of a best-of-seven, you can regroup and come back stronger.  If we would’ve played well and lose 6-0, I wouldnt be writing this down.  But we didnt play nowhere near the level that brought us in the East Finals.  We will be much better tomorrow.

PS-How much of an insult was hearing the Flyers fans chant OLE during last night debacle…Hope the boys use it has a motivation, they made fun of us on and off the ice last night.

  167. joeybarrie says:

I will say I will still take the side of the coach who has gotten us here. Wash is a big team and so is Pitts. In fact Pitts leads the playoffs right now in hits. Washington has alot of guys who are doing the same per game. The difference is as you say they arent concentrated on a few players.

Honestly i know we CAN beat these guys. I don’t know if we will. They are not a simple team. Pitts and Wash are. stop the 2 best players and hold on.

I will say we all played like crap, and Halak didn’t stop the puck like he has been. It take everything to go right for us to win, not so for the other team.

But I agree with everything you say. PK had a pretty BAD game. I think between him and Halak 50% of the reason we lost. BUT its only 1 game. They have been awesome for every other one, almost.

We just gotta hope Halak is back next game, or we are out. Unless Price turns into the goalie everyone think he can be RIGHT NOW.

#1: If a player like Paul Mara  in his mid 30’s can get a 2 million$ contract, why would Pleks take a 10 year deal that would pay him 2 million$ in his mid 30’s? That’s a bad deal for him.

#2: Do you want Pleks signed for 10 years? Because if he isn’t a big, strong, #1 centerman, do you want a #2 centerman signed for 10 years? Not really..

JM will not insert SK74, I can’t see it happening.  I’d like to see him play with is Bro to get him out of his funk but again, I can’t see that happening.  I’d keep Pouliot in the line-up, don’t blame the guy for not producing, he’s getting limited ice time and has lost his confidence he had when he played with Gomez and Gionta.  Find a way to bring back OB in the line-up, he was having great games lately and his physical presence would be nice against the Flyers.  Can’t blame JM for wanting to stick with the same line-up who beat the Pens but he saw the same thing we did last night and needs to insert OB.  I got sick of MAB last night, not able to keep the puck in the zone on the PP. I didnt mind him when he was producing but right now he’s tough to watch

Morrison, Ferh, Gordon, Fleischmann, Jurcina, Schultz, and Neuvirth. 4 are RFA’s and should be making a million each. That helps but they will lose someone, if not more than 1.

The good news is that a 6-0 loss means the same as a hard fought 2-1 loss as far as the actual cost to the series.  You can’t lose more then 1 game at a time and it still takes 4 of them to get knocked out.

I was at game four in Philly, and people started throwing stuff at our car as we were crossing the bridge from Jersey. We gave some cops the plates of the people who did it, and they laughed. Every time we got shit for being “French,” I asked Philly fans where they thought Daniel Brière and Martin Biron were from, and they feigned ignorance. We were pelted with various objects for the duration of the game, and subjected to “aaaaaasssshole” chants from throngs of orange-clad fans when we showed our faces in the halls. That part was actually a bit flattering, but things were a little dicey by the end when alcohol- and victory-fueled fans started to get physically aggressive. A security guard escorted us out the back door. Luckily, our tires were in tact. Quite the experience.

They interviewed Martin after the PIT series on the NHL network and he stated that the biggest difference from Halak at the beginning of the year to now is that “he changed his attitude and workhabits.” He also said that “Halak had to learn, that he needed to earn his playing time”. Hearing this interview explains, to me anyway, why after splitting the starts in OCT, why Price got 10 of 11 games in NOV and why Halak was asking to be traded shortly there after. It sounds like he had Sergei entitlement issues early in the season, that rubbed Martin the wrong way. Since NOV though, Halak has had 35 starts to Price’s 22. None of us are in the locker room, or at all the practices to know what shapes Martins decisions, but the real truth is, they are Martins decisions, not Gaineys. No matter what douche bags like Jack Todd think

“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”

  241. forskis says:

The point of my shpiel was not about the goalie debate…it was about Jack Todd acting like he knew everything from the start and how some on here are saying he is a straight shooter and right (especially if he agrees with their opinions) vis a vis everything Gainey/Price/Halak when he is just pretending that everything he said in the past which was opposite to everything he said TODAY never existed.  He has taken a stance on both sides and has acted that he was right every time.  Also, when the Habs beat the Pens in the playoffs back in the Houle era (’98?), he was full of bravado and stated that the Habs were on the right track and that brighter days were ahead with Houle in charge.

The whole Price starting as a backup was just my revisionist opinion that it would have been good to slowly bring him along as the backup instead of throwing him in as #1.  Plus the fact that Carbonneau has gone on record in that article saying that if Price was up, he was going to play him a lot (ie. CARBONNEAU’S DECISION) and NOT GAINEY telling him who to play.

I absolutely agree that it is entirely possible that Price is one of those that are good at the lower levels and may never realize that potential at the NHL-level.  But at 22-23, Price still has the time to figure that out.

I am guilty of using elipses…”

  242. ManApart says:

Understood, but didn’t Carbo not think it a good idea to keep Price up that year and Gainey insisting that he would do so anyway, stating that it’s normal for the GM and coach not always to see eye to eye? Looks to me like Gainey stated his case and Carbo giving in saying, “OK if the kid has to be here, no matter what I think is best, I’ll make the best of it and play him.’ I mean there’s no way you keep a 20 year old sitting on the bench. He has to play, whereever he is. Carbo heard what Gainey wanted and followed suit.

  243. K-hab25 says:

Explain to me how Price is a bust. Ohh thats right you can’t. Lets compare him to Ward, who’ll probably be an olympian in 4 years. Price’s career #’s 2.73 .912 sv% and Ward’s 2.79 GAA .906 sv%. Price’s #’s this year 13-20-5 2.77 GAA .912 sv% and Wards 18-23-5 2.69 GAA .916 sv%. Halaks career #’s 2.62 .919 sv%. Price is 22 years old, Halak is 25 and Ward is 26, both Halak and Wards best years came at 24/25 years old. So tell me, how is it Carey’s a bust, is it being an All Star at 21 or leading his team to first in the confrence at 20. Has he struggled lately, yes, but that doesn’t mean he can’t get back to where he was his first year and half. Since you suffer from selective memory syndrome, let me remind you. Through the all-star break last year he was 40-17-5 with a 2.47 GAA and a .920 sv%, in his first year and a half, definitely the #’s of a bust. Halak’s career #’s coming into this season 30-21-2 with a 2.75 GAA and a .914 sv%, his GAA and sv% eerily similar to Price’s this year, I guess Halak was a bust before this year. As bad as Price has been the last year and half 2.86 GAA .904 sv%, those #’s are earily similar to Wards career #’s 2.79 .906.

  244. forskis says:

From what I understand and from what I have read…Carbonneau does not like it when a young player is up and does not play (heck we see the rage on here when JM does not play OB or SK74); however, in my opinion, as the head coach, it was still Carbonneau’s responsibility to still do what is the best for the player’s development whether or not he thinks the player should be up.

But back to the present…I am looking forward to Halak’s bounce-back game and hope for a few goals from the Habs…plus I hope for OB in tomorrow’s lineup.

  246. ABHabsfan says:

I couldn’t agree with you more. There is nothing wrong with CP, it just that Jaro is playing so well that he is the back-up right now. There are lots of people that seem to forget that the Habs have an embarassment of riches at the position. Halak is a star, no doubt and deserves all the accolades. Carey Price will be star again, 22 is a little young to be thrown on the trash-heap.

  247. terrygain says:

If Price can’t handle the Montreal night life, he lacks the character to succeed in Montreal.

  248. forskis says:

I will be honest…given the tests that Price kept passing at that time…I would have had him up in 2008 as well…the Centennial year, I would have cut the kid a break and send him down if I could…but that is revisionist history on my part…the only thing I can say with certainty was his rookie year:  WJHC and AHL championship…why wouldn’t you have him up, it seemed like more than enough proof did it not?  It is the same story with Subban – many wanted him up ASAP with just the two WJHC golds regardless of time in the AHL.

Also, that article also had CARBONNEAU saying that if Price was up, he was going to play him and not let him be the backup, the only thing Carbonneau was sure about was that if a young guy was up, he going to play, he had no intention of treating Price like a backup…for me, despite what everyone else thinks, that solves the whole Halak v. Gainey v. Price thing…Carbonneau could have played Price like a backup like he should have, but did not; for me, in my worthless opinion, I think we can all stop blaming Gainey on this.

Besides, the whole point of my posting was that we should stop praising Jack Todd as a straight shooter…he is a revisionist of his own articles…he thought that when the Habs beat the Pens during the Houle era, that the team was on the right track and that better days were ahead.

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  249. salshabs says:

Gainey ruined the kid, maybe permanently.

  250. salshabs says:

Gainey’s mishandling of Price was to have left him unsupervised in what is one of the best party towns on the planet. On paper he was ready to play inthe NHL, his credentials and physical gifts were not in question. It was and remains to be, his level of maturity. He is not the same player that I had the pleasure to see when the Dogs won the Calder Cup.  He stayed on his feet longer and used his size to much better effect. He challenged and he beat shooters before they could beat him. Today he just looks lost and out of control.  Why can’t the habs take a step back in time with this kid and start from scratch, somebody has to take control. I am not a Price hater, there WAS/IS something there, we’ve all witnessed it. Gainey’s sin was one of ommision and neglect. This not on Carrey Price, it’s on Habs Management, and Gainey the man was in charge.

  251. forskis says:

That first sentence I can absolutely go with.

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  252. K-hab25 says:

Maybe you didn’t read the post, but Martin didn’t like Halaks attitude and workhabits early in the year. When Halak turned his attitude around he play more. After the olympic break he was winning and Price wasn’t, so he got the majority of the starts. Why do you insist on making everything a conspiracy?
