Canadiens defenceman Jaroslav Spacek on Monday.
Stubbs video grab
A few action videos and interview clips with defenceman Jaroslav Spacek and forwards Brock Trotter and Max Pacioretty.
Tuesday, it’s hockey again (almost) for real with the Dallas Stars at the Bell Centre for the Habs’ first of six exhibitions they’ll play in seven nights.
Brock Trotter video:
And Max Pacioretty:

It’s probably already long been noted, but, man, Space looks to be back in Buffalo physical form. Now, that‘s how you show up for trainin’ camp.
Undoubtedly, his bud Hammer’s two-year deal with Washington wasn’t lost on Jaro who would clearly – by all appearances – also like one more kick at the can before callin’ it a day.
Admittedly, I was hopeful the Habs would swing a one-year deal with Hammer while findin’ a way to move Space, but it obviously wasn’t in the cards. The fact Jaro seems motivated to earn a spot in the league next off-season is, however, a bit of a positive offset.
Still, he’ll have his moments, much as everyone does, and the fans’ll be breathin’ down his neck with a little extra emphasis, but one won’t be able to question his commitment.
However the team may want to suggest a new hair stylist.
Just sayin’.

So question to HIO staff. Various people have asked if you fine folks could bring back the red new indicator to posts. I think I recall seeing a response that it was being worked on.
Any updates? Now during preseason could be good time to try some changes.
Thanks Bill and Frank. Bill that link got put in my bookmarks, great.

Looking at the roster it looks like the Bulldogs are going to be pretty competitive. Hope they come play at the Bell this season. Cupboard looks pretty full, beats the Rejean Houle years.
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
Yah I think it was just 3-4 months ago and there was some discussion on here about how deep that team would be. PG has done good job filling it in.
Have to wonder if the Habs may spend a draft choice on a goalie in the next year or 2 just to have a youngster in the system again.
Let’s see what Delmas does this year. What happened to Jason Missaien?
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
He was not offered a contract by the Canadiens, but played as a 20 year old with Baie Comeau and was then signed by the Rangers.

Welcome to the newer NHL: The National Headshot League.
Andrew:
Down below, you were discussing Spacek’s ice time. In terms of even-strength ice time, Jacques Martin used Spacek and Subban as his #1 (once) or #2 pair for the first 3 games.
When Hamrlik returned from injury, he and Spacek were the #1 (15 times) or #2 pairing for 21 of the next 25 games.
Spacek was actually pulling heavy duty at the start of last season, with Subban and either Gill or Picard pulling third line duty (18 times out 28 games).
With Hamrlik gone, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him put Spacek with Yemelin or Weber as a senior mentor, as he did last season with Gill/Subban and Weber/Spacek.
I still suspect Yemelin paired eventually with Markov. Gill with Subban, Gorges with Spacek.
That being said, JM is the head coach, and we know how he likes to change things up from period to period sometimes.

http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
I misread your post. I have a bit of a feeling that you’re being optimistic about his position on the depth chart. With Markov iffy and Gorges being worked back into the line-up, I can see Spacek getting a fair bit of ice time out of the gate.
And I’ve said it a few times already, but I still think Gill’s the player most at risk of seeing his stock tumble. He was brutal in the first half last year, and Martin is smart enough to know that Gill’s minutes needs to be managed so that he has something in the tank for the stretch-drive and the playoffs.

From the numerous tidbits I’ve read from people who have watched.
Avstin: great hands, offensively talented. Drawback, what seems to be a work ethic issue. However, he’s taking the MaxPac approach this year and has been quoted as saying he looks forward to producing improved results this season in Hamilton.
Diaz has apparently looked as good as many thought he would be, some getting used to the north American game should make him ready for NHL play.

From mostly the RDS guys, as talented as Avstin is in some areas, he is as weak in others. He just turned 20 as he came over as a 19 year old so has time to develop and his English is much better too.
As for Diaz, he seems to do everything well. Question is, if he is strong enough to play in the NHL. Time tells.

Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
Actually spoke to my buddy last Friday who knows Konopka. His back is really effed up. He is taking serious cortisone and probably other stuff to deal with the pain. You will see him in and out of the lineup all season. Sounded to me like he is fairly damaged goods, probably the reason he ended up signing his UFA contract in Ottawa so late. While he has roots in Ottawa he was really hoping Toronto, Buffalo or someone else had made him an offer.
Well, I can’t make fun of him now and feel good about it. Hope he recovers.
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
Oh we can all still make fun, he is the Great Konopka, few other players were so close to leading us to the promised land.
Couldn’t help but think of those who took their own lives when you said “taking other stuff”. This is the new NHL…..
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
Well as I typed I tried to be careful. I read alot about Wade Belak recently and reading how he was taking 3-4 huge Cortisone needles deep into his pelvis was scary to read. The chronic pain he was suffering the past 3-4 years was tremendous.
Belak had said the worst part was he would get stretched out in pregame then sit on the bench the whole period, by the time often late in games he got the tap for a rare shift, he was completely sore and stiff and then had to proceed to fight. He especially didn’t like playing for JM as JM had zero use for that style of player as Belak put it.
I know it’s not saying much, but at least I have a game to watch tonight to take my mind off our fold-a-roo against the Bruins in the Finals.
An interesting point made by Josh Gorges in the La Presse article is how he is surprised to have his knee feel ready to go sooner than Andrei Markov. He states that they spent a lot of time on stationary cycles together, and Andrei’s recuperation seemed to be going very smoothly, while his own knee would swell up regularly when he pushed it. That would have been expected since Mr. Markov had a two-month headstart on his rehab.
As I’ve posted before, it takes approximately up to six months to ‘heal’ an ACL reconstruction, but then can take an additional year to get back to full functioning where the athlete feels as comfortable as before the injury. Tom Brady and Wes Welker are good examples of this. Mr. Welker had a good season last year, but this season seems to have regained his amazing form. Both these athletes are consummate professionals and competitors, and rehabbed and trained as such, but their first season back was a bit of a down year for them. Those who follow the Canadian Ski Team also notice this pattern, that racers returning from an ACL reconstruction experiencing relatively disappointing results the first season, followed by a marked improvement the season after that.
One of the risks in these procedures is that the knee starts to feel really good, and the ahtlete ‘pushes it’ ahead of schedule and repops the ligaments. This isn’t the case for Mr. Markov, his ACL is sound according to Dr. Andrews, but he may have overdone it a little with training camp approaching, being anxious to be ready. The swelling is not good news, but not catastrophic and not unexpected.
The silver lining to all this is that I feared Mr. Martin might overuse Mr. Markov early in the season if he was pronounced ready to go. His being held back might firmly implant in his mind the notion that he needs to baby Andrei along even when pronounced medically ready, and not rely on him like the reliable workhorse he can be. Even though Mr. Gorges claims to feel as ready as ever, he also needs to be reintroduced slowly. Both need to be monitored for any soreness or pain or swelling, and their minutes need to be limited and gradually increased as the season progresses.
The depth of the Canadiens defence should help achieve this. Glowing reports on Alexei Yemelin, combined with positive performance from Yanick Weber and Raphael Diaz, have made this a training camp that confirms the future is well in hand, and that reinforcements are a couple seasons away in the form of Mr. Beaulieu and Mr. Tinordi. This is the other silver lining, that Mr. Yemelin, Weber and Diaz are available to eat up these minutes that Mr. Markov and Mr. Gorges can’t or shouldn’t take. Early season should allow these three and others to gain valuable experience, and then take more of a supporting role as Mr. Gorges and Mr. Markov are dialed up as the playoffs approach.

Stay Thirsty My Friends!
According to François Gagnon (Twitter), Gorges was expecting a long-term deal and is a little disappointed.
He did however point out that Gauthier was honest with him, and the Habs position is to see how the knee holds out before offering a long-term deal. He still gets decent money after coming back from an injury, but I wonder if this will affect negotiations for next year.
http://www.cyberpresse.ca/chroniqueurs/francois-gagnon/201109/19/01-4449006-le-genou-de-gorges-est-cicatrise-son-coeur-pas-tout-a-fait.php?utm_categorieinterne=trafficdrivers&utm_contenuinterne=cyberpresse_B40_chroniqueurs_373582_accueil_POS1
I don’t think it’ll affect negotiations too much. As long as he has a solid season and stays healthy I’m sure he’ll get a a deal of between 3-5 years at a bit more money than he’s getting this year.
25 before 14
I agree, but I wouldn’t expect any hometown discount.
If Gorges wants to stay with the Habs, he will have to take a hometown discount. There is tons of defensive talent in the farm system. Would you rather have a 3m player or a 700k player? Salary cap era is here. Take the cheap young talent. I love Gorges, but its about the team.

Reduced time for Spatch assumes a healthy Markov. So I hope you’re right.
sorry meant to post this under Andrew’s remark below.
Having Gorges back will help out alot also, he can eat those minutes.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
I hope Markov is healthy too, but even if he isn’t Spacek will likely get fewer minutes. Assuming Markov is healthy, Spacek is behind Markov, Subban, Gorges, and possibly Gill in ice time because Gill will get more PK time. Last year to start the season Spacek was behind Hamrlik only, not a great position for him.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
D’you think he’ll end up behind Yemelin in minutes as well?
Everyone seems to be raving about this kid. I can’t wait to see him play.
If Yemelin proves himself worthy and gains JM trust, he will get the minutes. The key will be his transition to smaller ice and not taking bad penalties. The fact Yemelin isn’t a kid will help him.
By the end of the year, yes. But not to start.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
The Habs have reassigned 4 players:
http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=588975
Looks like Spacek has lost 5 lbs in his cheeks and jowl alone. Good on him. I have a feeling that with reduced responsibility Spacek will surprise a lot of people this year.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
And he made quick reference to old guys coming to camp, needing to be in better shape. I guess he backed it up.
Hopefully you are both right. The way training camps work these days, with competitive scrimmage just 2 days in, players need to show up in game shape. “Training camp” no longer is for training and getting in shape. It would also help in limiting the injuries sustained in camp only 1-2 days in. *cough* Gomez *cough*

Quick ? How many fans are out at Habs training camp?
I was at my kids practice Saturday and Kings were on the other rink – only about 50 fans, a few hard core autograph hounds (male, pale, fat, scary-looking with backpacks – serial killers if ever I saw some) but seriously, there were almost that many Kings on the ice.
Just curious.

Just a thought: Imagine Begin Metroplit and Darche on a line together. 3 tenacious workhorses showing folks how to work hard every shift. Would probably be one of the best 3rd lines ever.
I think a line of AK/Eller/Desharnais has more skill than that group and if AK gets feisty that line has 2 pretty good hitters in Lars and Andrei.
No doubt though Begin/Metro/Darche would be hard working and abrasive.
I agree with you on both fronts. As soon as I thought up that line combo, I traded for them in NHL2k9. A couple games in Vancouver wanted metro for burrows… couldn’t say no to that. always great to have a finger chomper on your team
You mean those bums Martin got rid of?
I agree with you actually, though I like Desharnais.
On a far lower level, I recently played a game against a much stronger team, but we played hard D and just frustrated the hell out of them, by the third period they were cursing and we tied it up 1-1, hanging on for a 1-1 draw in OT. My point is it was really satisfying to play a game like that, to make the skill players crazy.
Go Grinders!
Is it just me or does Spacek look younger this year? Lol..
Thanks for the video!
2 things I noticed.. Gallagher is a bit bigger than Gio. Ive seen Gallagher listed at 5’7 and 5’8.. looks like he might even be 5’9 now.
and.. Kostitsyn looks huge, hope he goes to the net like that in the regular season too.
He has lost weight for sure
Spacek wouldn’t tell me how much he lost or what he weighed at the start of camp, but he said he won a bet with a friend and drank more water this summer. “Than what?” I asked. “Gatorade,” he replied with a laugh.

Ahh good old Spacek, always good for a laugh.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
lol too funny. From looking at him he must have changed a little more than that. Good on him.
This D core needs him this year even more with Hammer gone
I noticed this too. He has one less chin!
those Czechs sure do enjoy their pivo
You were reading my mind. I heard somebody mention that he came to camp looking ripped and I thought “Old Pudgy McSlowly, ripped?” But yeah, he looks good but it’s still very early. Give him 24 minutes a night on his wrong side for a few weeks & check back.
I think Jaro has share of pride and probably wasn’t too happy how he looked on the ice last year.
He is one funny guy though.
Spacek looks fit, hopefully he can keep up with the kids!
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
It’s great to see hockey action, even if it’s very raw. Thanks for the video!
I’ll never be mistaken for a professional videographer. But I figure the video is value-added content for HIO viewers. And a nod to Mr. Boone, who’s now Captain Video himself. They’re his clips of Trotter and Pacioretty.

Thank you! Thank you!
It’s appreciated Dave! Thanx and keep up the good work.

So Dave, I see you taught Captain Video how to adjust the focus.
Wayda go!
