Video: Price earns NHL’s top honour

Canadiens’ Carey Price robs Hurricanes’ Chad LaRose Saturday night. John Kenney, The Gazette

• See John Kenney’s audio/video slideshow of The Save here

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price was named the NHL’s first star of the week. Price won all three of his starts last week, allowing only three goals and posting a 2-0 shutout over the Vancouver Canucks.

Price posted a goals-against average of 1.00 with a .970 save percentage as the Canadiens (11-5-1) widened their lead in the Northeast Division to four points.

The Canadiens goaltender improved to 10-5-1 with a 2.18 GAA with a .923 save percentage and two shutouts in 16 appearances this season.

Penguins’ Sidney Crosby and the Capitals’ Alexander Semin were the second and third stars.

Plus their backup west team the flames haven’t been that good either.

  2. HardHabits says:

Ah, I get it. Maybe a little second thought here. It is not a bad idea. If the extra minutes can be spread around the forwards I can see it working, as long as Plex doesn’t get burnt out. I still prefer rolling 4 lines.

  7. Mike D says:

In all fairness, those Cherry comments weren’t an insult to Price.  They were more so an insult at our fans for booing him and basically saying the kid won’t make any progress or reach his potential with the added pressure of being boo’ed at home.  He was essentially saying that Price won’t be able to find success with Montreal fans being down his throat for every goal he lets in (which did happen).  Had Carey not shown the tremendous growth he has – which is an AMAZING accomplishment considering a lot of fans disliked him even more after Halak got traded and worthy of more credit than words justify – Don’s comments may have just been 100% correct.  If Carey hadn’t got off to such a solid start to the season, who knows where his game/head might be right now.  Thank God it went the other way!

I’m not a fan of Don’s cuz he has definitely spouted his share of negativity towards our team (as well as some undeserved positives about the Leafs), but the comments you are speaking about are not at all a sleight on our ‘tender.

To be honest, Don has been a promoter of Price every time he mentions him (at least that I can remember).

    - Honestly yours

Exactly what I posted a couple of hours ago. It makes the most sense. It does look like we are in a panic whuch we are not. ANNND we can evaluate our young talent.

  9. krob1000 says:

I don’t think I made myself clear…I DO NOT WANT THE 7TH DMAN PLAYING FORWARD (there…that is pretty clear lol).  We have Lapierre, Pyatt, Cammi, all capable of playing center occasionally…we have Pleks, Halpern, Eller and Gomez who are all two way responsible centers….what I am saying is that one of those guys can fill in and play with the other two guys…..no DMAN forwards…just 7 dmen.   We have a young team up front..on the back end…quite the opposite. We have plenty of natural centers and guys that can collectively eat the minutes.  I don’t see enough dmen to split the minutes amongst as Spatch, Hammer and Gill are all a little long in the tooth and may benefit from the reduced minutes….Picard is just coming from the pressbox …the forwards , some of whom may not get enough time as it is could use them…I think that is where the extra time should go…I don’t see how it doesn’t benefit the team honestly.

  10. krob1000 says:

IF Jay Bouwmeester, Mark Streit, a dinosaur aged Scott Niedermayer last year, Joni Pitkanen, etc …can ll play more than 25 minutes a game..so can PK Subban.

  11. HardHabits says:

If that’s the case I would think Weber should’ve been playing part-time as a forward in Hamilton as a 7th D to get some practice for the role. I am not so sure I like that though. I am a firm believer in rolling four lines and having 3 pairs of defensemen. I would prefer bringing some-one up and platooning Hammer and Spacek, to give them a rest every so often.

UGHHHH I just read Todd’s article to see what all the fuss was about….makes me wanna retch. Todd “knew” Price would have a GOOD YEAR????? and I see that now that Price is no longer an easy target he has shifted to shitting on Johnathan Duhamel. Jack Todd should get a puppy so he can kick it every morning to get his emotions in check before heading off to work. What a dirtbag.

  23. CBrady12 says:

Well obviously, gambling addiction is a very serious problem for many people but like you said it has nothing to do with Duhamel, and therefore Todd has no reason to write that paragraph nor put him in his zeros of the week…That was my point

I would really like us to dress a 7th dman…I don’t think Gill, Spatchand Hammer can effectively eat the minutes ging to be expected…I wold prefer it if we went 7 d….since our centers and many of our other forwards are all capable two way guys they can fill in periodically and double shift here and there….this way we don’t see 20 minutes a game of HAl Gill, he can be used in situations he is most effecitve…same for Spatch and Hammer…they can match against top units bt get rest in between.

Well that it, hes probably just killing two birds with one stone…Choose at least ONE player on the Habs to compliment, while at the same time shit on the fan base…

  30. TommyB says:

You are correct, mostly.  Cherry has supported Price in the past, but how much of that was genuine support for Price, and how much was an opprtunity to take shots at Montreal and it’s fans (since many Habs fans were not treating Price very kindly at the time)?  I don’t know.  Perhaps it was, and is, genuine support, but I’m hard to convince when it comes to Cherry.

He might be a booster, but he certainly didn’t want to see Price succeed in Montreal.

  34. ManApart says:

I don’t know, I get his point, even though it has nothing to do with Duhamel. I’m a very serious poker player myself and do well enough to be able to come on here and talk all afternoon (shhhh, taxman will hear lol). A large part of poker is skill, but it takes a lot of work, patience, discipine and self control to become good enough to be a profit player. i’ve seen many, many young guys, think they know what’s up by watching a few TV tournaments and lose a lot of money real fast. A lot more than the ones who become profit players.

Sweet justice for the man.  now he has to keep it going.
  36. CBrady12 says:

My thoughts exactly…NO NO it’s not the fault of the person who gambles all of his money away, nor is it the government and corporations who shove gambling ads down our throat every 5 minutes, it’s the fault of a 23 year old who just won the biggest prize in a SKILL game

  37. CBrady12 says:

  39. TommyB says:

How can anyone not be very happy for Price right now?  Well deserved recognition.  Of course, there are those who are not quite so pleased.  Don Cherry being one of them.  When they showed video of Price Saturday night, after the laffs loss, Cherry quickly tried to brush it aside and snidely referred to Price, or the Habs, or the Habs fans, as “frontrunners now”.  It was not meant as a compliment.  I have begun to really enjoy watching Cherry, and the puppet sitting on his knee (Maclean) this year.  It’s actually tons of fun to watch them struggle to try to find something positive about the laffs game, while downplaying anything Montreal has achieved.  It used to annoy me, but now I realize just how much it irks those two jackasses.  So it’s turned into just plain fun.

  40. shiram says:

Wow talk about out-dated values and putting the blame on a kid for no reason.
So Jonathan Duhamel is a zero because he won the WSOP and now that might inspire kids to try to poker? Well the poker thing has been popular for years now, so dont blame it on the kid!

Why would he do that? Because it’s poker?

  43. ManApart says:

Good for Price. He had a ton of pressure coming into the season, and so far has answered the bell and then some. Keep it up and take those bastard Flyers down. If he continues like this all year, even I can forget about the little Slovak being traded lol.

  44. CBrady12 says:

Man I hate Jack Todd…Johnathan Duhamel achieves something no Canadian ever has, winning the World Series of Poker, and does it with class and was very humble throughout the whole thing, so much so that hes set to donate $100,000 to the Canadiens Childrens Foundation…yet TODD puts him in his Zeros of the week…If I saw this guy in the street I would punch him right in the Kisser…

The kid has been a stud at every level he has played so far… not just a passenger on those teams either, but one of the main pillars of those teams. So why is anyone surprised that he’s now starting to dominate at the NHL level? He had to go through a steep learning experience, which was made more difficult because he was thrown into the fire at an early age, in Montreal of all places! Yet he still has better numbers at his age than most of the “greats” did at theirs. So it was just a matter of time before he imposed himself at this level.

He’s got all of the tools, the size, the skill and the mobility… now he’s learning how to put all of those things together along with the confidence in himself… I’m excited to one day look back and say “I watched Price develop into another one of our greats!”

Could not have said it any better myself!

Price is only 23 years old, and already has 3 full seasons under his belt, not to mention he has faced challenges that most goalies won’t face until they are 30.

Carey has a 70-53-19 record, 2.67 GAA, .913 SV%, and 6 career shutouts. If anyone has any doubts that he is the real deal just take a look at those numbers.

What is everyone talking about when they are referring to Jack Todd? Can someone fill me in please and thank you!

    http://www.CareyPrice31.net

  85. SmartDog says:

I didn’t get this either.  But I’ve asked the question too and am getting that while other sports writers tend to research their stuff and put out thoughtful and informative articles with an injnection of occaissional AUTHENTIC personal views and insight, Todd just fires out dramatic stuff for the sake of being dramatic, and typically stuff that has already been chewed to death.  So in other words, he might right now be writing an article about how frail Markov is or how few games he’s played, simply because this would stir the (already over-done) pot.  Whereas it’s less likely you’d get a largely sensationalist article like that from Boone et al, or if they did write such an article it would be balanced not inflamatory.  Todd says stuff any drunk in a bar might say – and for the same reason, to get attention.  It’s writing, but not the kind of writing we want.

  86. careyprice says:

It may only be 2 months, but comparing Price to Halak isn’t going to bring Jaroslav back. Fact is Price is the #1 guy, and Jaro is the #1 for St. Louis. There is no sense in comparing the two anymore, it is time to move on and stand behind Carey. Management chose Price over Halak for a reason, and Carey is proving to everyone exactly why they did.

    http://www.CareyPrice31.net

  87. adam76 says:

    I can;t disagree.

  88. Jordio-oh says:

I don’t think he sounds like Leafs fans at all.

For one, its now a quarter of the way into the season, and not just 4 games. Secondly, Price has shown that he can play as well as he is now, so there’s justification in the optimism. The leafs haven’t recently (in the last 5 years) shown that they could play at the level that would make their good start seem legit.

I’m interested to watch as your comments flip flop over the year as Carey has 5-7 good starts (or more) for every one of his less than average starts.

” I’ll admit I was wrong, Carey has played well so far”

” oh I knew it, he’s weak between the ears and doesn’t work hard enough. We should have kept Halak”

The problem in here is people either are not consistent with their views, or they like to hide out when they’re being proven wrong, and then bust out with 6 posts in an hour when they are right. Actually, the whole idea of “i was right, i told you so” is so prevalent that its driven away some of our better posters (ie. Chris).

  89. VancouverHab says:

Jack Todd writes “I thought Price would have a good season, not a great season.”

Does he think that we can neither read nor remember?

Mr. Todd further writes “Price’s legion of fans despise your MMQB at least as much as they hate Jaroslav Halak.”

Does anyone remember Carey Price’s advocates here in the goaltending debate last year — any of them — saying that they hated Jaro Halak? I don’t. But I do remember William Blake (and I paraphrase) writing that “As the air is to a bird or the sea to a fish, so is hate to the hateful.” Bis interimitur qui suis armis perit, Mr. Todd.

  90. joeybarrie says:

OH yes JOKE TODD… YOU KNEW CAREY PRICE WOULD HAVE A GOOD SEASON….. One of his last articles:

‘When Carey Price reacted like a deer in the headlights to the first shot he faced in his first exhibition game last week, you could feel a little tremor go through this town.

When he followed that up by surrendering a total of 10 goals on 39 shots over his first two starts, that tremor might have registered on a few seismographs.

True, it’s only the exhibition season. The games are meaningless and so are most of the performances. But with Price, you want to see some confidence. You want to see some saves. You want to see something, anything, to prove that Pierre Gauthier didn’t make the biggest blunder in 15 years when he dealt Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis.’

‘If it was a blunder on a par with the Patrick Roy trade’

‘Gauthier had one and he threw him away, all for a “thoroughbred” who has not come close to living up to his potential.’

‘If you thought things were going to be different with Gauthier in charge, you were wrong. It didn’t take long for Bob Lite to prove that where Price is concerned, he drank the Kool-Aid.’

‘Carey Price? I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t believe he has the right stuff.’

OH YES INDEED JACKY….. YOU KNEW PRICE WAS GOING TO HAVE A GOOD SEASON….. What a JACK-A**……

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  100. SmartDog says:

I was never “either/or” in the goalie question. But I did like Halak a lot and was frustrated by how he was treated in favor of Price and that we let him go after his stellar – absolutely stellar – playoff performance.

So I have to say that Price’s play has been excellent.  Not only is he more even-tempered, always in position, his reactions are solid, and he seems to be in the flow all game long… but he’s been consistently strong.

You can’t get down two goals against Price and expect to win.  That’s something that we haven’t had in a long time.  A consistently stingy goalie.  Nothing in the league is more valuable.  Pricey really has made my day lately and I hope he keeps it up.

-He’s not signing his contract because he’s on strike.

    Thanks Shane.

I can see why this guy doesn’t like my posts.  They’re obviously over his head.

    ———
Is the All-Star Game a Joke? Consider that Price isn’t there and Fleury is:
Fleury’s STATS: |win%: .25|save%: .860|goals/game: 3.23|. In six seasons Fleury has only ONCE had a save % over .912. If he’s an all-star my ass is a hovercraft.

While I’ll be the first one to praise Price, and throw it in the face of my fellow coworkers who have all named their unborn children after Halak… We’re hardly a quarter in to the season… Lets not all get too high on any of MTL’s players. Gotta keep a level head and expect a few ups and downs the road ;)

  126. nick says:

Considering Eller is a young forward working to find a spot for himself.

Schultz is still in the AHL.

In my opinion its a little premature to be criticizing what MTL got in return for Halak. Until Eller and Schultz have established themselves on the team we really have no idea what the return of the Halak deal is worth.

  127. habs365 says:

the only way to find out if Eller is good or gonna be good….put him with two good scoring wingers on a regular basis and we’ll all find out….not 3rd and 4th line….that’s for crashers and bangers….if JM is gonna keep him on those two lines….than don’t judge the trade…. you maybe way off when he goes to another team….how’d you like to put him on a line with crosby and malkin for starters, maybe you’re criticizing would end.

  132. shiram says:

For all the talks about him on here, i still dont see him signing with the Habs.
The fact that he is recuperating from an injury, and with the Habs letting go of OB you’d think they we’re comfortable with the depth they had in Hamilton as well.

Poutine, the perfect trio, on any line.

  133. cautiousoptimist says:

I don’t get the love-in for MAB.  He’s got a great shot and is brutal defensively, which is exactly what people say about Weber.  Given a choice between two similar players, why not go with the younger one who’s already in the system, who’s still developing, and who might actually improve if pushed, rather than the guy who’s shown time and again he’s always going to be a one-trick pony?

way to go Pricey!!! looking awesome!!Look’s like MAB is getting some attention from lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning appears to be interested in signing free agent
defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron, according to a report in Montreal’s La
    Presse.
    It was originally thought
that the Canadiens might have interested in re-signing Bergeron, who
played for the Habs last season, but the team hasn’t contacted him.Instead, the Lightning and the Anaheim Ducks are among the
    interested parties

Bergeron’s agent, Paul Corbeil, told La Presse that the
Lightning has expressed an interest in his client, but talks have been informal
and the two sides have not yet discussed terms.

In 60 games with the Habs last season, Bergeron picked up 13
goals and 21 assists for 34 points.

So does this officially bury the debate between Halak and Price?  Now let’s talk about the trade of Tenderness and Pouliot.  Tenderness has 3 G and 3 A.  Pouliot? 5 G and 4 A and he is playing in the 3rd line.  A steal?  Looking like it now.
