Video: Habs react to Game 5 loss to Bruins

pricer

A fatigued Carey Price meets the media in the dressing room postgame.
Framegrab from Stubbs video

From up 2-0 in this series to down 3-2. Sudden death in Game 5, a double overtime loss. Now, a sudden death 60 minutes, or more, Tuesday in Montreal. The Canadiens will now push this Eastern Conference quarterfinal back to Boston next Wednesday, or their season ends on Tuesday.

The arithmetic of history: the Canadiens have a record of 7-19 lifetime when they’re trailing a best-of-seven series 3-2. The Bruins are 17-4 lifetime when they’re up 3-2.

  13. eric says:

Habs have 1 year left on Price’s contract; PK’s contract is coming up and Nomez has till 2013 left on his contract. Something’s gotta give

  14. HNS says:

Me thinks without Markov and Georges, we are in deep doo doo.

  15. st smart says:

Coming to the conclusion that alot of so called hockey fans who blog on this site live in denial. Such as Price played better than Thomas last night. Really? Ask Gionta. The goaltending at both ends was magnificent. And if the Canadiens are so much better why does our goalie have to ring up a shutouts to win? Next year boys!

  16. Tony McLean says:

The Broons are the better team but we have a better goalie. And we’ve proven we can play with them. Anything is possible.

    “Remember 1971.”

  17. Well, it is what it is. Carey Price did his best, and his best just wasn’t enough tonight. It happens. The Bruins had a lot of luck out there on the ice, and there’s nothing anyone can do about that. But it all evens out in the end. Let’s hope it evens out in the next two games with the Habs getting some of these bounces and breaks to go their way.

We were down 3-2 twice last postseason against teams that were arguably quite a bit superior to the Habs, and guess what? The Habs won those two series. The Bruins are not the better team. So, why should the Habs not win this series? They play as hard as they did tonight, and barring the same ridiculous luck, the Habs win game 6 fairly easily. And game 7? I see no reason why the Habs can’t win that too. We won two straight games to start the series, we can win two straight games to end it.

    • original6 says:

So much whining and crying going on here. The Habs played great, they were lucky too. They were beaten by a better team, and luckier. Could have gone either way, but it didnt. Be good sports and hand it to the Bruins who found a way to get it done, again. Now you see why the Bruins traded Gill away, he is slow, and Marchand skates right around him, as do others. The Habs played fantastic, very exciting. Just not their year. They barely mad ethe playoffs anyway. Going to be quiet at the Bell centre tuesday at the end of the third period, except for the few Bruins fans in the crowd.

      • HabitantQuebec says:

You must be a Bruins fan! No doubt! The Bruins Got away with grand larceny! They were so lucky i Got physically sick. Its simply a kliche to say “they found a way to win!” – that is BS. They were outplayed in OT in game 5 and only dirty luck kept Them in that game. Wake up.

        • original6 says:

Um yah, grand larceny? Keep telling yourself that, it will help you make the offseason blues go by better. Ab win is a win, whether its luck, cliche (fify) or if it makes you sick. Better take your medicine because you’ll be ill Tuesday nite. Take heart, theres always golf! Root for the B’s in their next series! Buffalo?

    • Tony McLean says:

Amen. Price has to get the home ice monkey off his back but he was terrific last night.

      “Remember 1971.”

  18. bob says:

That was a great game, good work and bad luck, but HABS will win Tuesday night GO HABS GO…………)ES LE BUT
    RClavel

  19. G-Man says:

Habs have choked their way to the brink of elimination. Thomas, with the help of posts and bodies in front of his net, in games 3,4 and 5 has outperformed Price. Price has played lights out, but it’s not enough. His playoff luck continues. Too bad, too, after a good bounce back season.
This should end Tuesday and the incessant whining over Gomez will continue. Ho-hum.

    • Bill J says:

I really do not think Thomas outperformed Price.

The Boston Defence outperformed the Montreal Defence.

Had Price received help (as opposed to a few MTL D who seemed to just stand around the net on some goals) the series results would be quite different at this point.

Habs in 7! – Go Habs Go!

    • sailor2963 says:

G you must be watching a different series, Price has outperformed Thomas hands down. This series should end Wednesday, anything less would be a travesty. The Habs have lost two tough games in OT, that’s unfortunate and arguably some bad luck. These things tend to even out, hopefully sooner rather than later.

  20. The Cat says:

It was a good game last night. The last few games should at least humble a few fans who think Price is so much better than Thomas.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

    • Bill J says:

WTF are you talking about Cat ?

      Price IS better then Thomas.

Are you trying to imply last night was Price’s fault ?

      • The Cat says:

        No of course not.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

      • original6 says:

Maybe you dont get to see the news much, price is a good goalie, not great, and not nominated Thomas is a Vezina finalist, soon to be winner.

        • Bill J says:

Maybe you don’t watch hockey too much.

Price is a GREAT player, Thomas is a LUCKY player (see not so good)

Nominated for the Vezina based on the results his defence has provided him.

But that wont change your Bruins fan pea-brain view on things. So I am only replying for the benefit of Hab fans on this board.

K ? Now go back & play with your NESN friends lil Bruin fan.

          Buh-Bye

    • cynic says:

Cat, Why should fans be “humbled” just because you have an opinion?

    • Danno says:

Price was better. Thomas was luckier.

      • original6 says:

whatever gets it done. I would rather be lucky and hoisting the Stanley Cup ,than ‘good’ and lose the game. Timmy is the Man though, you cant say he’s lucky after the season he’s had. Have you heard of the Vezina before? Google it.

        • dleblanc343 says:

Of course a habs fan knows what the vezina is, wake up, he was one of our first legendary goalies! Jesus christ

        • HabitantQuebec says:

Original6 please stop embarassing yourself with that kind of questions! The Vezina Trophe was introduced by the 3 Habs Gms back in the 1920ies after Goerge Vezina (A Habs goalie on the Best at the time) collapsed and died during a game. I Think the last place you should pose such an ignorant question is at a Habs website…!

          • original6 says:

Thats fascinating, but the point was made by Danno that Price was better than Thomas, I was responding to the fact that TT is a Vezina finalist. Yes I know where the trophy comes from, and I know who deserves it.

        • grid77 says:

tim thomas is a flopper who benefits from a solid defensive unit..carey price had to play behind a below average defense all season. the vezina trophy is judged solely on numbers..and thomas’s job was made much easier by his defense. which is the main reason they are winning this series..their defense is outplaying mtl defense..both goalies have been spectacular, but mtl defense is giving away the series

      • Tony McLean says:

Lucky to have some offense. And the posts and crossbar working for him.

        “Remember 1971.”

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

And, on the Marchand and Horton goals, Price was abandoned by his D men.

  21. cynic says:

Another lacklustre effort. With any luck the Bruins will put us out fo our misery on Tuesday night so we can get on with summer. This was the lost season. Not only did one of our best players (Pacioretty) get mugged with the total blessing of the league, the Bruins have now effectively given us the finger and it looks like they will have the last laugh about that one too.
Unless the Canucks wake up it will be 18 years since a Canadian based team won the cup. Coincidence? I think not, just look at the sardonic smile on Gary Bettman’s face very time a Canadian team fails… Is it too early to say c-o-n-s-p-i-r-a-c-y?

  22. HabFanSince72 says:

Is Tim Thomas the luckiest player in the history of the game?

    • original6 says:

No, that would of course be Yvan Cournoyer. Stop your whining, its pathetic.

      • HabitantQuebec says:

Hey Original6 it is not pathetic and it is not whining to analyze a game – you should try, even if your Bruins Got the lucky bounces!

        • original6 says:

So let me get this straight…Calling TT ‘lucky’ is analyzing the game? Whining about luck is for losers. You make your own luck by how you play. Both teams played very well, both teams had many scoring chances. Hats off to the Habs, it was an excellent game. TT was the difference, as good as Price was, TT was the difference.

  23. Rusty says:

The only good thing about this game was that it is now proven beyond all doubt that we have four centres who are better then Gomez; Pleks, Eller, DD and Halpern. All are also better on face-offs. JM’s biggest mistake, and something that will always haunt him, is the fact that he doesn’t manage capability. He manages salaries. There is of course no way Gomez would get the ice time he gets had he not made the money he makes. Let’s pray that DD can play on Tuesday and then it’s finally time for JM change the composition of the team. Some GMs have buried major salaries in the minors. The least JM should do is give Gomez fourth-line duties and time.
SHAME ON YOU MARTIN IF YOU DON’T REWARD PERFORMANCE!

    • SmartDog says:

Bang on. Gomez is – and will continue to be – our handicap; he’s a difference-maker in the worst way.
The ONLY good that can come of losing to the Bruins (if that’s what happens) is that Gomez will be revealed to be too costly to team success to keep and they’ll bury him in the minors and eat the expense.

      • Tony McLean says:

Possibly but I believe there must be at least one or two GMs in the league gullible enough to give him a try if we eat half the salary. But it’s obvious to me at least that he won’t be back no matter what happens. We need another Bobby Smith big ‘fill in’ veteran for 2-3 years.

        “Remember 1971.”

    • Old Bald Bird says:

I was just thinking something like that. To me he’s or #5 centre.

    • HabitantQuebec says:

Hey Rusty, good comment, however arent you a bit hard on Gomez? I know hé sucked during the season but I Think hé did stand up in the playoffs even if hé has not been great. Gomez has speed and is physical and hé has made some really Nice passes during playoffs ie game 1 and 2, so spot on the team is okay…for now!? Question is, Can hé be send down to the minors next season? Just like the Rangers did with their other blow outs. Almost comic that Gainey still went for it after All the Rangers had suffered…

  24. shrack says:

I am damn proud of the boys. After all the sh!t they have gone through, to hang in like that in Boston-with the Bruins playing undoubtedly their best hockey-amazing! We could have have won this game. We will win the next two.

  25. rocketsglare says:

If the Habs would have taken care of business in Game’s 3 and 4 then
this series would have been over. Boston is certainly beatable but the
Habs have failed to take advantage of their opportunities and tonight
was another case in point. Like the tired cliche of making the most of
you’re opportunities, the Habs have unfortunately, not done so and it
may be their ultimate undoing in this series. Let’s hope Game 6 is kind
to the Habs. What an epic Game 7 it would be.

    • Muckbringer says:

gooins just dont deserve 4 wins. thats what pisses me off

    • lady luck was on the other bench – again. damn, the refs blew the call on a trip to cammalleri in double OT…no bacbone, or that is how the game goes this year. What happened the Gomez…if he is not playing well, then play him less. Our defense was too slow, perhaps a little long in the tooth. Proud of the effort…yet with no puck luck that is huge these days, you don’t go far. Still, a couple more games to go…they had to win in boston…let it be wednesday.

  26. Trisomy 21 says:

Well, I’m going to cry myself to sleep tonight.

  27. habs365 says:

well there hasn’t been any blow out’s so that tells me the habs ain’t all that bad–with a little luck the Habs would have this thing wrapped up–but it hasn’t been the case in the five games–so it’s do or die game-6–if by chance we don’t move on in this round–scoring should be the big question for the off season-with 3 more 20 goal scores this team would have a excellent chance of winning a cup all the other parts are in place..keep supporting the team it’s not over yet…..

    • Muckbringer says:

the lolly gagging has really surprised me. i wont get on any of them though. theyre our team and who am i to say what they should do. even if we dont win the series,(and i think were the better team) theyve made us proud 85% of the time this year.
that being said: i hope after each game they lined up to give careys exaust a peck.

  28. NickDags says:

I feel for Carey, he left everything he had on the ice and has nothing to show for it. He played the best game of his career in my opinion, 49 saves on 51 shots and no chance on either of them. Too bad the boys couldn’t win this one for him.

If it wasn’t for Thomas’ backup goalies, Ryder and Chara this game would of been ours. With the crowd behind them in game 6, you gotta feel like its coming back to Boston.

    • Muckbringer says:

no matter what happens this year, lets not get on anybody, just thank carey. over or not, he has been our year

    • original6 says:

Too bad Subban couldn’t have been there for Price, instead of playing up so much. Maybe he’d be better on a wing. I guess in the close games it takes a total team effort, and the B’s brought it.

  29. Wops says:

Loved the Carey Price interview! The guy is pissed off, i I would be scared if I was Boston

  30. shuttle-lemaire-lafleur says:

Good effort form most of the guys, had our chances in OT to put it away and just couldn’t find the net. Proud of the boys, they played their hearts out. We are due to win one at home and that will be on Tuesday night…Go habs Go !!

  31. patience is a virtue says:

Wow. Heartbreaker indeed. Price looked mentally and emotionally drain-o-ed, but what character and poise he shows in that interview nonetheless. He’s one cool customer with years and years of excellent hockey ahead of him.

I expect this tough loss will harden the Habs will for games 6 and 7.

    This ain’t over yet.

    The good news: Cary Price
    The bad news: our offence
Pleks played his freakin’ heart out, so did Gionta (but who has become 100% predictable… deek inside just ONCE why dontcha?), a few other guys – Halpern, Eller, Pyatt, played well. But you need to score goals to win.
And why the f is it that people say Gomer is a playoff performer? He has less than a half-point a game in his playoff career. That STINKS for a top line center. And he’s MINUS 15. In this series he has 3 assists in 5 games, and not a goal in his last 35 games. Why is he still getting top line minutes? Please bench him for game 6. The REST of the team will get a boost from knowing this over-paid freeloader is not taking up their ice time. Worked when they benched Laraque. It’ll work again. I just can’t stand to see this lazy SOB pretending he’s chasing down another Bruins sweater.

      BS SD.

      a) Gomez is playing well. Not $8M well, but, well, we’ve never seen that now have we? He is still integral to the team. Him, Gio and DD were impressive even if it wasn’t Gomer’s best game of the series. I sure hope DD isn’t out with an injury, he’s really coming on.

      b) The offense is producing AOK this series, actually, and it had more quality chances tonight than the Bs. Luck was not on their side – those B’s defensemen saves were craziness.

The smack talk just sounds silly after a hard fought battle like that. Price and Gill set the tone for Habs fans with their demeanor and comments above. These boys have class and I’m proud of them.

      • Gomez is not playing well, that’s almost as delusional as SD is.

        • patience is a virtue says:

Ah, a first for me – the AB attack. Hmmmm… are you from Alberta?

I prefer not to bite as I’d like to get to bed before 3am and I can only begin to imagine the quantitative and qualitative war that would ensue if I actually did do the unthinkable and try to defend Gomez right now.

We can argue about his playoff play and value to the team another time.

          Sleep well.

SmartDog, I know what you’re saying, but I’d put our defence ahead of our offence on the Bad News list. Marchand and Horton had so much time on the puck, they could both have got their phones out and filmed themselves scoring.

Look-they played their hearts out so for that I am really proud BUT with the missed chances tonight(Pleks on Ryder,Cammaleleri/Chara) I can’t fight that feeling that this is meant for the Bruins, kind of a destiny thing like we had last year.i don’t want to see the season end as when the habs are out,I’m out,it is too soon and I am not ready for this to be over…

  34. rogieshan says:

Throw the math and past history out the window. This team proved tonight that the first two wins to open the series were no fluke. Far from feeling demoralized, I am confident of a Game 7.

Coming out party for Desharnais and Eller tonight. Very encouraging sign for their future.

    • 4EverHabsFan says:

Encouraging sign of their future I agree, but we know it is just a matter of time until JM plants their asses on the bench, probably in Game #6…

    *cough cough*

Excuse me, I’m choking on some bear meat…

Sugar coat this all you want, but when you have a team down 2-0 and blow 3 leads in game 3&4 its called choking…

What I seen tonight was white shirts watching a bunch of black ones skate around for 50 minutes..If you think this is the best the Habs can bring, you are delusional..What we seen in the 1st period and a half of game 4 is what they CAN do…Just took our foot off the throttle after going up by 2..

Yes, I’m a Hab fan..Wanna fight about it?

  36. AK_PK_Usay says:

They played well, they had some freak chances, Price made some freak saves, double OT…
Now is the real time to show support, if you haven’t, get that flag on your car, meet up with friends to watch the game, MAKE SOME NOISE!

when all think alike, no one is thinking very much

  37. Mattyleg says:

As we’ve seen, there’s not a hell of a lot between these two teams.

It’s anyone’s game when we’re both playing our ‘A’ game, as we were tonight.

Good series, and it’s going to suck for the one golfing at the end of it, because either one has a chance to go deep if they make it through.

Great effort. Very proud of the team.

    Not over.

  39. Old Bald Bird says:

Too many goals? There were only 2 over about 90 minutes!
