The Canadiens climbed out of the Eastern Conference cellar with a solid win over Winnipeg.
Carey Price was frequently spectacular in racking up his third shutout of the season.
No coach’s audio because an important appointment with a case of two-four and an HDTV screen prevented HIO from hanging around for Randy Cunneyworth’s press conference.
But the videos are pretty cool.

The only good news for the Habs this year was Emelin, Cole and knowing Brendan Gallagher is coming up soon.
.
I’m a little bit confused. Now is it, if we win 3 of the 4 next games we have a chance of making the playoffs, or is it we have a better chance at a first round pick?
I shouldn’t have had that last scotch.

Good. Now that the football sideshow is out of the way, we can concentrate on the Habs making the playoffs.
The Habs just need a little tweaking: a general manager who is administratively competent, a coach who can improve the team’s even-strength and power play, a few forwards who can consistently score, and a few defencemen who can move the puck with authority. That’s all they need!
Haha hahahahaha hahahahahahahahaha. it goes on and on

i’ll concentrate for next year.
Morgan Ellis is looking better and better all the time, to the point where he may be the organization’s best defensive prospect, every bit as important as Tinordi or Beaulieu. He was just named Hockey’s Future Prospect of the Month for January. This kid is really coming into his own. Very encouraging.

The Habs need to retain Timmins’ services. It’s looking like he’s able to nab those late round steals that are coveted by all teams. Now if only they could retain the players that were drafted instead of being a supply to other teams (same goes for coaches).

1 great thing about the Habs this season.
Emelin.
What a player he is going to become. The hits he administers, getting better and better in his own end, and the outlet passes are coming, you know the offence will increase. Fun to watch. He should have a new contract before the end of the season.
EDIT: congrats all Giants fans, or Manning fans
Wicked game, great finish…because Brady lost. Yeah, I’m not a fan of the Patriots.
Someday, being a Raiders fan, I hope to be able to at least enjoy playoffs.
What a very awkard trophy presentation that just, so tacky. Player lines up and caressing the trophy. One thing that NHL gets right is the way they celabrate the cup. The players looked like they were at a strip joint for the first time while they looked at the trophy as it was a stripper. So gay

I have been cheering for the Montreal Canadiens and the Dallas Cowboys for as long as I can recall. Let’s just say I am not very confident in the ownership of either team at this time.
Glad you had a great day!

Congrats to the Giants and their supporters.
Looks like Giant win. Looks good on NE losing.
Giants receivers were better than Patriots.
Gill seems to be in demand so let get him traded. Then bring up Tinordi and give him a taste of the NHL. Send him back for thier playoffs. Love to see how this kids handles the NHL especially against Boston.
Tinordi is not in Hamilton. Can’t call him up.
Can’t call up anyone from junior until the junior season is over.
Gotta hand it to Manning. He is one clutch performer.
Still up in the air, going down to the wire!
At least it’s entertaining. I used to hate it when the SB was decided by half time. It’s still anybody’s game.
agree with that
For the record HH, I was the first one to suggest that Gionta be moved. I suggested it in October when his value would have been highest. You did not concur at the time. In fact no one did really. Most thought I was nuts.
We still do.
Think you’re nuts.
But we don’t hold it against you.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
There was a point that I preferred Gionta over DD I’ll admit but that has since changed. I still like Gionta and think he will have a bounce back season next year but invariably he is part of Gainey’s smurf summer free agency bonanza and I’d like that mess purged.
I am not sure If we will be able to get a first round pick with what we are selling. I think the habs are looking into propects. Possibly a package of 2nd, 3rd, or 4th picks for Gill, moen, or kostitsyn, and maybe the seperation between teams is if they throw in prospects.

anyone know a good site for checking this years draft players
TSN with Mackenzie and Buttons (?), HockeyFutures and NHL Central Scouting rankings plus ISS rankings (link at HockeyFutures)
http://www.nhl.com/ice/draftprospectbrowse.htm
do we take a chance on little subban?? he is ranked #1 for north american goalies
thanks , we need a forward , lots of D on that list , will see how that changes , but i would take forsberg , i cant wait to see where we finish
Oh God…do NOT pick a Goalie or D before a forward!
Go Habs Go!!
“Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them.” – Sam Pollock
That I can agree with. I am hoping the Habs draft that impact centre that has so been lacking on this team, that they missed out on in 2003 with their 10th pick when they had a plethora of choices.
There is no need for the Canadiens to pick a goalie in the first-round again, although who knows what will run through the mind of this team’s next general manager when the draft rolls around. Interestingly, during the last 15 years most championship teams simply have had good, not great, goaltending that was acquired largely through trades or free agency. The Canadiens desperately need a forward with some size and who can score. I don’t see the goaltending and defense positions needing young bodies at this time.
I would consider it if he was still around come our pick in rd#2,especially if we have more then one 2nd round pick. But i don’t think he will be around that long.
This Emelin is becoming my favorite player to watch on this team. Not only can he hit like a freight train (and clean hits)…he can skate well…sshoot well…pass very well ….finds the open man well and makes that first pass confidently and accurately. He’s got good poise with the puck and is unfolding right in front of our eyes this year at 25yrs old (shows what a little maturity in age does) that he is gonna be a mainstay in our top 4 D for years to come. He’s a great player.Really should be opening up eyes in a hurry soon if he aint already and if i were gm i’d sign him to a 3-5 yr deal at a good rate now.His potential is sky high.Get him while he’s cheap still.
“If ya ain’t wasted, the day is!”
Yes he needs to be locked up quickly has been our best defenceman all year, and he gets better every game…
I know.I love watching this kid.He’s solid.He just looks like a player.
“If ya ain’t wasted, the day is!”
+1
It’s time to lock him up. Agreed. DD, Max and Yemmy should all get extended deals. If we need to bury Gomer and Kabs to do it, so be it.
Let’s remember that he has 7 years experience in the Russian league / KHL (arguably the 2nd best league in the world). What are Subban, Nash, Weber going to be like in their 8th year?
Now that’s a half-time show.
Vogue vogue vogue vogue…..let ur body gooo with tha floooww….ooohh/….u got 2..

Madonna is a has been and a tramp…
I was talking Lenny Kravitz.
Madonna carefully cultivated an image that made her one of the wealthiest and influential singers of the twentieth century. It’s most unlikely the sexual image of Madonna and the real Madonna are the same. At any rate, at least Madonna didn’t stoop to the lowest level as Britney Spears did by dressing up like 12-year old girl ready to spread her legs.
Knowing the Habs they’ll be in draft lottery position by the time the trade deadline looms and after they sell with the monkey off their backs and no pressure to win they’ll go on a sick winning streak and finish 20th over-all.
I’m sorry buddy but this is not a 28th place team…has played like one but is a 14th place team that lost it’s MOJO!
Apologize all you want. A team that loses 20 games it led and is 30th in the league on the PP is a 28th place team.
Almost every win has come at the hands of an opposition goal-tender that has taken the game off.
So they win half those “20″ games and they are second in the conference. Actually believe it was 14 games which same formula would put them 6th. All theory on my part…same as yours.
So my uncle has tits he’s my aunt.
The difference between elite and lottery pick is marginal these days given parity. Doesn’t change that the Habs have been averaging at 16th over-all since 1994. Even in the last 10 years they are 16th over-all if you average out their final standings. 14th over-all is still middle of the pack.
The point of the matter is they didn’t win those games.
Forgot logic wasn’t wanted in the Tank, my bad!
And just because your aunt has a beard doesn’t make her your uncle! Gee whiz you circus people are touchy
The Tank is not run on emotion alone. There is a lot of thought involved with putting together such a devastating piece of machinery.
Oh I am a freak!
“One of us! One of us! Gooble-gobble, gooble-gobble!”
You’ve mistaken them for the Leafs
I doubt it. The sell off is about to begin. You’ll have some kids up from Ham and a very young, inexperienced D… We’re going to get spanked.
Gill and Moen should be going soon… and I’d imagine AK at the deadline. Hell, if you can get something for Darche, do it.
I for one enjoyed the game and the win today and felt sad at the same time knowing there will be no playoffs and I miss Bugs too

whatever happened to Bugs. Did he leave to along with other posters to protest the Hickey article on Theoren Fleury.
No to the protest.
I like this site. The thing is that the majority of the comments are negative and don’t appear to be very constructice. Guys like Berkshire and the others at least broke the monotony, even though they could get annoying. Now it seems like the active posters all subscribe to the same outlook on the team.
It’s pretty hard to have any other outlook on this team this year!
You’d have to be drinking some heavy duty Kool-Aide to think otherwise.
No it’s not. I like watching this team play. So much better than the last 3 years or so. Sure the results suck. But, the team, as in the group of players, offers more hope than any in a very long time. I can’t help but be encouraged when I see that everyone of the best players on the team is on the good side of 25. except for Cole who has been awesome… and Gorges.
Andrew and the bunch are essentially right, This team is better than the results they’ve obtained. I don’t need statistics to bare that out. It’s clear on the ice. They’re missing some pieces. Namely a game changer,(Subbie’s not up to it currently), but the young core of this team is very good.
I am mean sh#t, it can be a fine line between success and failure in this game.
I was embarrassed by that fiasco in ’08-’09. I am very disappointed this year, but not embarrassed.
This is the toughest market in hockey bar none. When things go a little funny they snowball easily. If these kids are kept together this will be a successful team sooner than later.
Love your mind!
Like to think that the majority of posters see the potential in the young guys and how they’ve progressed through adversity during this otherwise crappy season. This site’s posters are too tough on these young guys who are playing in a pressure cooker. They’ll be OK in time just got to caught them some slack.
So, yeah, I agree, there’s hope for the future, and I’m cautiously optimistic for that future (with the right Management Team)
That said, as a long time reader, recent poster, I recall the majority of Berkshire’s comments (among others), and they were not so much about the young guns but more about the “great team” and mix of veterans/rookies PG has assembled. The team was never reaching their lofty visionary plateau due to bad luck, injuries, poor officiating, some type of conspiracy etc etc…Non of us is perfect, but talk about delusional. From my point of view these delusional posters were drinking this management team’s high-test Kool-aide big time while at the same time refusing to note the obvious deficiencies that seemed to be hang’n out there in the wind for all to see (at least for a number of posters). These team shortcomings were shouted from rooftops by the talking heads on TV and the armchair idiots (myself included)…Hab management’s response…”head in sand” refusal to even consider these shortcomings as worthy of consideration. When HIO’s negative nellie dissenters expressed their opinions they were raked over the coals by Delusional Debbies.
No…they were not essentially right.
For the record I am not taking about specific debates or how things were handled. I was largely MIA during that period and I try not get involved with the personal stuff. I just meant I agree with Andrew’s underlying premise that the team is better than its record. I honestly do.
And i agree (to a degree)
Yup, it was so obvious that the team needed more size. That Smurfville was not going to bring us to the promise land. Berkshire and Gauthier were the only 2 that thought otherwise. Gauthier finally admitted as much during his interview after the Cammaleri trade.
Delusional. This team might be good in a few years but this year they are as bad as their record. In fact it is their few wins that skew the perception. Almost every win for the Habs has come at the expense of an opposition goal tender crapping the bed.
It is a continuation of last season where they could not win a game they trailed and when they started putting in the effort and winning those games they trailed the injuries rolled in like clockwork.
When there was the great size and grit debate this summer AB and his enablers pointed to all the supposed moves that made the Habs bigger but it took all of up to the Cammy trade for Gauthier to admit the Habs needed more size and grit when the Habs acquired Bourque.
I don’t like tooting my horn and in all honesty it upsets me to be right about what I am right about. I would much rather be right about how good the Habs are and about how good they look and like a contender moving forward. I don’t see that yet. Yes there is a good young core but there is a load of expensive and useless veteran contracts hampering the team from contending. Cammy was traded which was a good move. Kaberle was acquired which was an awful one. Today Gomez played 10:28 with 2:00 minutes on the PP. IMO that was 2 minutes too much as he should never be on the PP. When Gomez’ contract is buried and Kaberle traded maybe. I also think Gionta should be dangled next trade deadline and Cole made captain.
IMHHO the team needs to put aside it’s constant penchant to just make the play-offs and accept the ebb and flow of sucking and excelling. Perpetual mediocrity has destined the team to being middle of the pack and thus having an outside chance if even that of ever being capable of winning 4 rounds of play-off hockey.
Berkshire was a Don Cherry wannabee. He thought he was a know it all and that went out the window when he kept insisting Gomez was so much better than Desharnais.
Yeah… I don’t really miss the Anti DD rabble. Their bias reached such farcical proportions, you have to believe there was more to it than the guy being small in stature.
But man did they love our Great Dane… If only Eller played with Cole and Max. If only Eller got PP time…
You know, Eller has been given chances and he’s blown them. I get how he shows promise – what with him being bigger, faster and stronger. But the bottom line is consistency. DD brings it every game. Eller shows up only once in a while. That’s why DD gets dessert and Larry sits.
I’d love for those guys to step on their ego and admit they got it wrong. DD is a better player than Eller and has been the last two years. But that’s wishful thinking… These guys need to save face.
PS: I’d add that I don’t have a problem with Eller. I think he’s our second center – but only because Pleks has been MIA for most of the season. He’ll get there eventually. It takes time with rookies.
Eller should have gone straight to Hamilton but management needed to justify the Halak trade.
HIO is a mirror image of the team’s fortunes. When we’re flying high, the place is buzzing and the fans are happy.
When the team sucks…
I too like this site. But I don’t understand why it is a problem that comments are “negative.” Why do comments have to be “constructive?” What does that even mean? When a poster states Scott Gomez has gone one year without scoring a goal, does the “constructive proviso” mean s/he must preface that by stating Gomez did make one nice pass during the latter stages of the second period? How can a poster constructively comment on Geoff Molson sabotaging Randy Cunneyworth’s career in Montreal by publicly undermining his authority?
I suspect that if the “constructive proviso” were rigorously enforced, perhaps 10 people would bother posting on this site. The comments are generally negative this year because the team has played dreadfully, and the organization appears to be in disarray.
So the game today didn’t help the draft position, but Heck that felt great! Hip hip hooray!
And any posters wishing to drown me with tank talk, I don’t care, i like watching my team win, even if it means some fancy word like pyrhric (spelling I am sure is wrong, not a word I use in a regular day).

The Habs blew their chance of making the playoffs this year. They better not start winning some games and blow their chance at the number 1 pick overall. A win is a loss at this point.
And for that reason, that is why I suddenly like Gomez again. He is doing absolutely everything to help us get the No. 1 choice.
Go Giants!

Good for the boys, but hopefully they can save the winstreaks for next year. It’ll really do no good this year.
Yeah, we need to win 22 of 30 games to hit 93 points which seems to be the magic number for 8th place. Then the Pope would come for sure looking for the miricle.

Did anyone in Montreal hear this news. I hear the Pope has sent someone to Montreal to investigate a mircale that was performed. Noped wasn’t a staue of the Virgin Mary crying tears. Noped wasn’t someone turning water into wine. It was a hockey players making 7.5 million dollars a year, who can’t score or play defence. Pope said F&^% now thats is what I call a miracle.
Not picking on Gomez or disagreeing with your post, but U.S. citizens working out of the country also have to pay tax on their earnings outside the country as well as their country’s tax’s. Now i don’t know if this relates to Athlete’s or not so prehaps some can fill me in on this as this would effect all U.S. players. Also Canadian players who play in the States do they get double taxed?
Mr. Biter
No Mr Biter, there is no double taxation because of the tax treaties that exist between Canada and the U.S.
Thanks mws. I allways wondered about that as it could really be a issue when players decide where to play. Danke (German)

A Pyrrhic victory (/ˈpɪrɪk/) is a victory with such a devastating cost to the victor that it carries the implication that another such victory will ultimately cause defeat.

Google it. A habs blog.
Thanks twlighthours. i thought this was the only real Habs blog site.
Mr. Biter
It is. Honestly, don’t waste your time over there. This site has real writers and honest posters who have played the game. That site has bloggers who fill their too-long articles with typos and blindly rely on foolish “stats” to argue things like “Gomez is an effective player” or “kaberle is good .”
That’s my opinion anyway.
While I do miss Andrew Berkshire and some of other posters’ contributions, there was, at least in my opinion, a disturbing tendency by Berkshire (and that poster who provided updates on Montreal’s developing players) to think they were somehow “experts.” I had some exchanges with Berkshire near his end here where he just couldn’t see his comments were still, despite statistical support, “speculation” rather than “fact.” His opinions may well constitute “informed speculation,” but they remain speculation. There are many informed and interesting posters on this site. The one poster I truly miss is Bugs.
He got do arrogant at the end there. And he said a lot of stuff that ended up being just wrong. Habs would contend with bruins for div title, bruins wouldn’t be good again, Gomez would bounce back…. Of course, he’d never admit to saying this stuff. My biggest thing is that he somehow thought crunching data meant he knew more about hockey than someone who had actually played it or cosched at a reasonably high level. He has his niche, but it’s just that – a niche.
Just for you:

Good one. Now Go Pats Go.
Mr. Biter
C’mon HH we have to have a little hope for the future. It’s just a bone.
Carey Price finally got a shutout he deserved as much as Scott Gomez being held goal less for a year now. It was a great team win and P K Subban dropping Wheeler like a sack of potatoes.
Yemelin has been proving his game with bone crushing hits and hitting the scoreboard as well. Great to see the young guns playing for a spot on this team for next season. A team effort today and Tomas Plekanec played unbelievable!!!
Math according to Bertuzzi the Bullish: 10-1=9!
One win in th ebooks 9 to go for Bertuzzi’s TEN in a row.
I am betting on your optimism Bertuzzi.
Habs played great today. Now on to football go Giants Go.
GIANTS GIANTS GIANTS
I will laugh all day long if the Pats go down, man oh man this is going to be one great game.

If I watch the super bowl it will be for the commercials. Don’t really care for either team since the Pack “tanked”
Mr. Biter
I’m watching it through Videotron, so the feed is going to be the CTV feed, meaning no superbowl commercials :-/

Kiss my hAbSS!!!
Was hoping for at least 10.
Mr. Biter
We all (well most of us) like to see the team win but realistically it is hopeless. The higher the draft pick this year the better.
First!
