Video: Ference’s ‘unintentional bird’ and Bruins on eve of Game 5 vs. Habs

Andrew Ference speaks to the media Friday.
Stubbs video framegrab

A fun day in the Bruins’ dressing room at TD Garden Friday, Boston beginning preparations for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal vs. the Canadiens on Saturday.

Lots of video on the way. First up: Andrew Ference on the $2,500 fine he was assessed for his middle-digit salute for Habs fans Thursday after he’d scored Boston’s second goal in what would be their 5-4 overtime win.

  10. Ian Cobb says:

    Good one Tommy!

We have a total of 16 games to win before the opposition does, in a new era league that has reached parity because of the salary cap.

We are definitely going to lose some on the way.

Most teams are about equal in talent, And the deciding factors will be, number one, philosophy of coaching! and second, heart and desire of the players!

  11. TommyB says:

A little perspective. Been feeling a bit down since last game, ok, more than just a bit, but after having some time to reflect on a few things, I am feeling better this morning.

The natural reaction for most of us Habs fans, after failing to grab a stranglehold on the Bruins and ending up even at two games each, is to think we are cooked now. Down to a two of three series now, with two games in Boston. But take a look around the rest of the playoffs. Look at the things that have happened so far.

Vancouver had the Hawks in that stranglehold, up 3-0 in the series, and now they are going to game 6 with a one game lead. Predictable? Who honestly believed that series wasn’t over? The Wings sweep Phoenix. Okay, not hard to imagine Detroit winning, but those old geezers sweeping? I was surprised. The perrenial choker team, San Jose, is looking pretty good. But when I go to bed and LA has a 4-0 lead, and I read the next day that the Sharks won 6-5 in overtime, that could not have been predicted. It was quite a surprise. Pittsburgh looks very much in control over Tampa Bay. The same Tampa Bay that has St.Louis, Stamkos, Levavalier, and a coach that many on here were drooling over a short time ago. This, without the services of Crosby and Malkin. A little surprising, if not shocking. The Sabres are a win away from defeating a team all Habs fans don’t want to meet in the playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers. Okay, they have Miller, but even Miller allowed 9 goals over two of those games.

Speaking of goaltending, pretty much every reputable goaltender has had some stinker nights, allowing 4 or more goals or getting pulled. Those Habs fans who are climbing all over Price should take a look around the league in these playoffs this year. Price has had some pretty good company if you want to say he had a bad night….Thomas, Miller, Luongo, Bryzgalov, and so on.

So, heading into Boston tonight, my fears have been calmed a little today by some rational thought. We’re even in this series. It has not been a homer series. Play a tight game, hopefully low-scoring, and maybe team D wins it, bringing a chance to finish the series back home in Montreal. Does that sound impossible? I don’t think so, and I am reminded of a couple of series last spring where the odds seemed to be stacked so high against the Habs. I’ll suck up my fears and wait to see what actually develops. I’ll leave you with one question….Does a bear s*it in the woods? Maybe tonight we will see.

  12. Danno says:

The way to fix this BS is for the Habs to beat the Bruins convincingly in their own barn like they did in games one and two. Then on Tuesday come home and beat them again. After that, 21,273 fans in unison can give the Bruins the one-finger salute as we send them packing for the golf course.

That is how you deal with this crap.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  13. psyko514 says:

Unintentional bird? Ferrence is a clown.

  14. J Haul says:

If there really is such a thing as “the Hockey Gods”, this would be the series they have to poke their heads in and say “hey”. Enough of the Bruins’ slimy way of doing things. Flip off the fans… deny it happened. Break a neck.. deny you meant it.
The Hockey Gods, I would think, are real men… and real men stand up and are held accountable. You would think one team can only get away with so much. It’s about time our boys make sure these scumbags are held accountable.

  15. Rainrocket16 says:

God so many people on here are too emotional! Who gives a rats arse about Ference flipping the bird, his loss of $2,500. Keep doing it for all I care, Bruins are just showing their true colors this year. Personally I don’t think they should really have that much confidence, Last years exit is something to laugh about. We burn them tonight at home again and that is gonna be our classy version of the middle finger!

  16. slychard says:

The finger was so blatently obvious!!!! Yeah keep preaching egghead. You can’t sell it in my end. You are part of a group that resemble a cult. Drink the cool-aid Fer, and make sure Chara,f-face douche-bag coward Marchand and all of them for that matter suck every ball in the vecinity of balls. God bless

I’ve met Andrew Ferance, I played co-ed soccer with his wife Krista in Canmore, AB. when he played for the flames. Was surprised to see him act like a jerk like that, seemed like a nice guy.

On another note, it’ my fault the habs have lost 2 in a row.
I picked Pleks as my 4th pick in a hockey pool with the intention of picking at least 4 more habs but another guy took Cammi and Gionta. I got pissed off and out of spite took Bergeron just to piss someone else off. sorry

  19. slychard says:

Living in key west fl I saw a schmuck wearing a bruins t. Gave him the Ferell finger as a joke but he was so insulted, even after I tried to explain myself, obviously europee-on. Looser. Wears a looser shirt, like any bruin shirt wearing fan… No clue

  20. observer says:

anaheim talented forwards horrible defense. bad goalie. lost 90% of the battles on the boards for the puck, 090% of the faceoffs when it counted. luca speesa as useless a defenseman as washington’s karl alsmer.

nhl has too many teams – ie- too many players in this league are minor leaguers pretending they are big league.

  21. naweed235 says:

to all you people losing your trousers over the loss:
Just remember that it is 2-2 tied series… not to mention that this is a team that has heart and soul unlike the bruins… They fought their way back from a 3-1 deficit against Washington and a they came from behind three times to win the series against the Pens last year…
Plus, we all saw game 4 and Montreal was Clearly the better team or atleast for 50 mins of the game… if it wasnt for a couple of lucky bounces, Boston would have been blown out!
I have confidence in this group and hopefully Price can get back to making the big saves and this series should be ours!

    • observer says:

you dont have a clue! no one does about how habs will react to this terrible collapse yesterday. last time i saw it was years ago when they had carolina on the ropes and let them get away and went on to lose all the rest of the games.

      • Bill J says:

You don’t have a clue! No one does. (this part you are correct about) the rest you went on your standard rant…

As recently as last year the Habs had one game “terrible collapses” (Remember that Jaro was pulled TWICE last year) – but the Habs still came back & won.

      • krob1000 says:

gomez “no trade” is that every year he can name 3 teams he does NOT want a trade to……so all we know is that season we weren’t bottom three

        • showey47 says:

I missed that,my bad. Hey,were not bottom 3 anymore in places players do not want to be traded too. It wasn’t that long ago when the same thing could not have been said.

If it smells like BS it usually is BS….

    • Bill says:

And you got this from a friend of a friend? Why that’s an e3! Sounds reliable to me!

Seriously though, Gomez had lived in New York since he came into the league. He was settled. And it’s New York! He didn’t sign that contract thinking he’d be moving that fast. Plus Montreal is freezing, the taxes are mental, and he can’t go to the depanneur without hearing about his +/- rating. And don’t forget he’s ethnic and has lots of money; Jacques Parizeau can tell you how Quebecers feel about people like that. Of course he was pissed when he got traded!

He must have reconciled himself though. If he really wanted out he’d play harder to make his contract slightly less anchor-like.

  31. SlovakHab says:

    So was it an offside?
    video screenshot:

    • Mad Habber says:

no not according to that picture.

      • Habfan4lfe says:

It was offside. You can clearly see the players skate crossing the line. Puck is almost a foot behind.

        The vid is here

        • Mad Habber says:

Isn`t it suppose to be both feet?

          • olematelot says:

Not necessarily, if one skate is in the zone then the trailing skate must be on the ice. If one skate is in and the other is in the air then the player is considered over the line

          • Danno says:

Kelly’s front skate is well past the blue line. Kelly’s back skate is not in contact with the ice and therefor he is offside. Refs blew the call and gave a gift to the Bruins.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

        • showey47 says:

I disagree, after watching that replay over and over again on the pvr at 1/15th speed it looks like the puck makes contact with the blueline before the back skate of the player next to him leaves the ice. The puck doesn’t need to cross the full blueline ahead of the players,it just needs to make contact with the blueline itself. IMHO thats what i feel happened.

          • olematelot says:

The puck has to cross the blue line…it must be first into the zone

          • chanchilla says:

i bet the refs can see in 1/15th of the speed too, you people are dumb.

          • showey47 says:

Get a grip. Where do i say anything about the refs? I made an opinion on what i felt i saw on a slowmotion replay, nothing about the officials. Maybe you should learn to read before you start insulting people.

        • olematelot says:

That play is not offside, only one skate in zone, other skate is on the ice outside the zone

          • Habfan4lfe says:

Both skates are over the line before the puck. Sorry I can’t port my PVR recording to Youtube. Such is life. Hopefully we come out next game with the same energy we started with.

    • Clay says:

Not offside. But even if it was, it matters not. The Habs quit playing to win, and thus deserved to lose. They need to play much much better next game – or rather, play for a 60 minute time period that is NOT split over two games, like they did in the last 2.

The only interesting answers are those which destroy the questions. ~Susan Sontag

  34. habs001 says:

right now boston has their 2nd and 3rd line producing…if their number one line starts to produce than our 2 top lines would have to match 3 of their lines…this is the reason it is so hard for the habs to win when you get no production from 2 lines…

  35. habs001 says:

the next 2 or 3 games in the series will probably be one goal games…it will come down to which d makes the more mistakes…it may not be the case but if you had to give odds i believe our d would be given the higher odds that they will make more mistakes than boston and the problem is that boston has way more forwards than we do that can take advantage of a d error….

  36. punkster says:

Ference: “It wasn’t meant to insult anybody…”
Well, of course not. It’s a little known fact that the middle finger salute was first used by the ancient Greeks to express extreme physical pleasure, otherwise known as odysseusing or in its more common form, the Big O. Obviously Ference was simply experiencing an intense odesseasm and wanted to share his moment with the crowd. A hockey play.

    ***Subbang Baby!!!***

    • JD_ says:

My sources are tellin’ me Ference was actually invokin’ the symbol for Savea, the first son of Atiogie and Tauaiupolu, citizens of Ancient Samoa under the reign of the King of Tonga.

Legend has Leutogitupaitea, who was the daughter of Muliagalapaitagata and Pouliofata, marryin’ the King of Tonga. She expressed her concern with the rock that blocked the road round the cape at Matauea, Safotu. The king order Savea and his brothers to move it under threat of death.

Yada, yada, yada, Ference popped his first playoff marker in a decade and spoke to Ancient Samoan rites of passage.

It’s so utterly presumptious of North American audiences to assume Ference was displayin’ the digitus impudicus. Read a book, people.

  37. habs001 says:

luongo won a gold medal ,he was the winning goalie in the world cup and he has had great regular seasons but he is seen as a goalie that cannot get the job done in the playoffs…unfortunately if we lose the series to boston price will have the same thing hanging over him…even if he has a better reg season next year the comments will be that the season is meaningless till he proves himself in the playoffs…

    • habs365 says:

habs001–the habs would not be where they are right now if not for Carey Price–so don’t give us this BS he has to prove himself in the playoffs–the team has to do that and believe me–three or four scores that’s about what they have has their work cut out if they’re gonna take Boston out–we went through this all season–same players getting the goals–bout time the other nine forwards stepped up or the Golf Course will be 2-games away…..

    A familiar theme.

2 question for HNIC tomorrow night:

    1) What are Ron and Don going to say about Ference?
    2) What would they say if PK had done it?

My guess is that they twist their faces as if to say “no big deal” and then bring it back to how Ference’s teammates are sticking up for him now while he supposedly bailed on Paille earlier in the season.

    • samTHEman says:

You’re right. And it’s absolutely typical for Don not to point out his disgust with anything the Bruins do. Bias. It is what it is. And if PK had flipped it to the Boston crowd, oh Boy would we ever hear the end of it

Heh. Just caught Ference’s douche comments on TSN.

    Instant classic.

  43. JasonM says:

    Who cares about Ference.

Let’s talk about the 8 goals in two games from Carey Price or his 6 game consecutive losing streak in Montreal. Let’s be honest, Price isn’t known to be a playoff performer and he’s been outplayed by a sloppy Tim Thomas this series. Yeah, I said it.

I’m being serious. Beyond the Game 1 shutout that was more of a team effort than a solo effort, Price has yet to steal a game or has to shine. Thomas did when it mattered near the end of the game in Game 3.

That’s what we needed from Price after we went up 3-1. Instead we got “high glove” Price Lite.

    • Mark C says:

Why do you omit Price’s 34 saves in game 2? The only goal he gave up in Boston he cannot be blamed for. If you want to question is performance in the past 2 games then fine, but he was full value in games 1 and 2; there is nothing more he could have done in those games.

    • HaloHabsFan says:

I don’t think Thomas has outplayed Price. I think what we are seeing is adjustments Fulien has made in two areas to react to JMs game plan:

      1) We have no answer to shut down the Bs second or third line and it’s hurting us. Pleks can only shut down one line at a time.

      2) The Ruins D is making adjustments to break out of their own zone, using skating and short passes to skate through the neutral zone as we try and clog it with 5 guys.

      We need adjustments.

I’m sure Price will be the first to admit he did not have a great game. This is not the time to give up & tear him down. Where would we be without him? The whole team needs to play 3 periods +.

“Hate the Bruins like a sickness”

      • Ton says:

Agreed. He is the best shot at winning. I was at the game last night. He’s our card but its not a guaranteed card. The team overall is not good enough to win on its own on most nights, montreal fans finally understand this……having said this we rely on Price but its not given that he will win every game for you has often has he is asked to do. I saw this game live and I cannot believe Spacjek is not getting a ride on this, he cannot play in a garage league. Forget basing Price he adds value this guy doesn’t

    • Bill says:

Price has won championships at every level so I think your criticism in that regard is … not well considered. He absolutely has not been outplayed by Thomas. He was a huge factor in both wins. In game four, no, he didn’t have his best effort, but … Bruins got really lucky. Which of the goals should he have stopped? I mean, which were bad? I’d say none. The OT winner? Zero chance.

As a team, the Habs kinda choked in this one, and at the same time … The Bruins were really impressive. Kept coming back. I respect what they did without blaming Price or even Gomez, whose line couldve been better, let’s say.

      Habs in seven.

    • Man Dingga says:

There wasn’t much else he could do last night. Ryder scored on a one on none breakaway, the odds are always in favour of the shooter. Second goal was a rolling puck and its the hardest shot for a goalie to make a stop on. Its like a knuckleball in baseball. The third goal slipped under his trapper one he’d like to have but with a defence man standing right there, he should of been going after the man and not the puck. Of the goals this is the one he wished he’d had. The fourth goal was Sopels fault, he stood in front of Price and the puck hit his skate. Sopel was worrying about the puck and Kelly was standing right there to put it in the net. Price can’t track the puck when he has three people standing in front of him. The OT goal was a blown line change and Moen’s inability to dump a puck in deep. Sorry 3 on 1 breakaways are killers especially in OT when teams are buzzing. Answer this for me though Price is down and out on his stomach last night and was able to make an unbelievable save, with his trapper I might add and we are calling him out for playing poorly. This kid has played great for us and its time the D step up and start taking the heat for careless play. I hope Muller tore a strip off Subban and Moen for costing us the game last night. BS!

    • swannyboy says:

Totally agree, seems they were going high glove side and it worked, but this defense is not mobile enough, hamer, spacek, gill, sopel, they may have their moments but when the screw up it ends a goal,or great scoring chance.

  44. EricInStL says:

mmm every time I started to listen to a Bruin. This is what I did to drown out the BS.

    Try it, you’ll love it.

  45. LL says:

Ference thinks wearing glasses makes him look more intelligent or serious.

Too bad he is missing integrity. Does no one on the Bruins’ team ever fess up to what they do?

  46. LA Loyalist says:

In the 7 game format, has a team ever won a series without winning at home? It would have had to be the lower seed, obviously. If we win tomorrow, lose game 6 and win game 7 in Boston, it would be us.

Is that a weird statement on the mental fragility of both teams?

  47. Ton says:

Just got back from the game in Montreal. Amazing time just disappointed in the result. Every game has a winner and it just wasn’t us I guess. Watching the game live is much different and you can see things you cannot see on TV, vise versa (I did not know about the finger until we tuned into TSN) This team relies on Price to win every game, he was not sharp the last two home games, but he was hung out to dry by his D. Spajek (whatever his name is) could noy play in a garage leaque. If there’s one player to blame its him. Listen to Norman Flyn he will tell you. Mistakes he made put Price in a vulunerable position. I will also say this in defense of him; Roy, Dryden, Billy Smith, Grant Fuhr, Bernie Parent, did not stop all puck directed at them and they were some of the most influential goalies of the last 4 decades. This series is not over but management needs to start developing youth and hanging onto players they develop, Ryder has been a Hab killer since he left. We scored enough goals to win the last two games but Martin needs to trust his youth more. Of note; Muller has his eyes on the Boston warm up the entire time. Wondering what he was looking for?! He should make a recommendation about Spajek. He was absolutely brutal, I watched him out of TV’s view, he has no glue, he’s lost it. Get him out he’s costing us a series!!!!!!

  48. Kristopher7 says:

I think one of the issues is that Ference actually scored… in the playoffs. The last time he scored in the playoffs was with Pittsburgh in 2000-2001………… sigh.

  49. Steven says:

    [EDIT: Wrong section, sorry.]

  50. HabFanSince72 says:

    Andrew Ference is a Bruin.

    A Boston Bruin.

  51. Top Corner says:

Iam tired of these idiots doing things and then “oh…iam sorry Mr Cambell ” the next day crap !!! Next game i say we burn the bruins jersey at center ice and say ” Oh, sorry everyone , it was unintentional , we respect the bruins organization, there a class act ”

IDIOTS !! and KARMA loves IDIOTS !!

  52. Habitoban says:

Bruins are having fun. Habs not so much. Where do you start. I haven’t read all the stuff people have been posting so apologies in advance for repeting things that have already been said, but when, oh when, will JM do something radical about Gomez. Minus 15 in the season (team high) minus 3 in the playoffs (team high), and that’s with lots of PP time. How can you bench White and Eller in the 3rd (one shift I believe), when these are the guys who brought you the energy that carried us through what Boone called one of the best periods of the season. OOOH they might make a mistake! OOOH Eller is having troubles in the face-off circle (wasn’t Halpy on his line?) Moen looks hurt to me. Even if he’s not hurt I’m not sure he should be playing ahead of Benny, given last night’s performance. So tired of people saying that our finish during the season was because of the coach. I continue to contend that our strong finish was despite the coach. Take Price out of the equation and where would we be. I’m done, but why don’t I feel better?

    • habstrinifan says:

“Bruins are having fun. Habs not so much.” I think you said it all. I was one of those loving P.K. overly dramatic ‘serious demeanor’ in his last interview. But in hindsight I should have voiced the nagging doubt in the back of my mind. I think the players are under too much pressure to be robots in JM’s tow the line system.

      • Habitoban says:

I’d love to see the yunguns’ turned loose a bit. If we take a few penalties in and have a few giveaways in the process so be it. At least we will beplaying with some jump, which it seems is the formula to beat these guys. But at minimim, let’s roll four lines.

  53. jimmy shaker says:

Yawn…..I’m tired of these jabroni’s already! JM, eller for gomer and end this nonsense already. Game 5 win and end it in montreal. Carey can you put this team on your back and carry them? You winked in the first game just like patty did in 93, so you know how the rest has to go!

    • habstrinifan says:

Thanks shaker for saving me from having to listen to any of the Bruis videos. I just know I my reaction will require a SWAT TEAM ROLL OUT to save the f’ing neighbourhood.

I hope Carey does it! I dont mean to read your thoughts, but I get the sense that, like me, you wish that we had a team that could shut these guys mouth up.. regardless of the wreckage we cause.

But with PG and JM we wont. Imagine a two tough kids like White and Eller.. yes I think if Eller was given more of a chance he would be a huge part of HABS HEART… being played like that by JM.

  54. habsindepth says:

I can’t understand how do you flip the bird “Unintentionally” .. it’s either you wanted to do it or you didn’t, what happened there? his mind was telling him not to but his finger acted on its own and it raised? Seriously. Just admit you did it, it was in the heat of the moment, you just got nailed by Gionta before scoring, you were pissed at the fans for cheering the hit and you flipped them the bird. Apologize. Say “I’ll pay the fine and I’m grateful that Colin Campbell is at the helm of NHL’s disciplinary unit and I didn’t get suspended, I’ll make sure to thank Greg afterwards for putting in the good word with Dad and I’m sorry to the Habs fans”.

    Done Deal, right?

Campbell/bettman and gregory campbell = a free pass to anything the cubs do……should we really be surprised? And I can’t wait till pj stock gets punked when the habs real off two in a row, and the camera pans to seebass and co up in the presser getting pissed more and more by the minute……aw……what a sight to see!

      finger malfunction

    • habstrinifan says:

Dont even try to explain the idiot. Just hope that one day our team will be stocked with the ‘right players and coaching’ that will exact vengeance for the Bruins disrespect this season.
