Update: Pacioretty returns home

According to Renaud Lavoie of RDS, Max Pacioretty has been released from hospital and is back home.

Earlier on Thursday, a a source at the Montreal General hospital, injured Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty was able to leave his hospital bed today and walk around for a little bit.

Pacioretty suffered a severe concussion and a fractured vertebra when he was drilled into the stanchion that separates the two benches at the Bell Centre by Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara on Tuesday night.

Oh I wasn’t suggesting he’d be back soon. In fact if he plays this season I think people should go after the Canadiens organization for negligence. Pacioretty needs to be resting as long as possible.

  2. rated_R says:

watch at 1:26 where you can see Max Pac who’s not even in the collision path to that stachion until Chara pushes him into it. He gives him no room whatsoever by the positioning of Chara’s skates.

Bettman is a first class retard. Its time to get those SOB’s out of our sport. If indeed Air Canada pulls out it should be very clear that if there is a carrier replacement they are boycotted.

When the league rightfully suspended Washington’s Alex Ovechkin for his dangerous shove on Brian Campbell, Colin Campbell told the Washington Post: “If you cause a player to be injured, then you have to be responsible for the play that you’re involved in, if there’s any carelessness or recklessness in it.”

After going completely bonkers over this for just under 48hrs now I think we’ve got to leave this in the hands of the people or organizations that can correct the NHL’s failure to react accordingly.

As much as the CBC, specifically Don Cherry, gets on everyone’s nerves, I’m sure they’ll have a pretty good segment regarding this on Saturday night. I know Cherry has been after Chara in the past for not being a sportsman and going after smaller players and I can guarantee Ron MacLean would love to have Gary Bettman come on CBC Saturday night. Bettman will probably decline and chicken out as he always does.

The police are investigating and Air Canada is considering dropping their sponsorship along with Tim Horton’s entering the conversation.

It would be nice if the NHL came out and said they’ll seriously review their punishment policy and take a long hard look at ways to make the game safer.

I am not familiar with starting up a petition or organizing a campaign for raising the awareness of what these two have been doing to the NHL – especially since the lockout.

Just after the lockout the increase rule enforcement meant very enjoyable hockey where the game was based on skill and speed.  But with each passing year, the league has been reverting back to goonery (if that’s a word) to win games.

What a shame, it was a pleasure to watch the skill following the lockout!  And, teams that built themselves for that style of hockey were being reward until the past couple of years.  What an utter shame on Bettman and Campbell!

Grounds: 1. the undue haste in which the hearing was convened and conducted.

                  2. the apparent conflict of interest between Campbell’s son’s team being involved and him trying to get around said conflict by having his lackey Murphy conduct the hearing. What the hell is Murphy going to do? He has to do what his boss wants! That’s not arm’s length. Campbell should have gone to exraordinary lengths to at least appear to not be influencing the hearing. They could have brought in a respected third party, someone retired, without a dog in the fight – Gretzky even, to look at this. And then form a committee to review the overall policy.

Thats the biggest part of the no suspension that hurts. Justice was not done. So there will be those who will take it into their own hands, and when it happens it will be squarely on the hands of Bettman, Campbell and Campbell’s flunkie who apparently made the decision (he does not deserve to have his name mentioned).

Bettman is corrupt, this is known. He is inconsistent and reactionary. He deals with each instance seperately and without regard for any kind of repercussions. The penalties have rarely ever made sense, which makes Campbell just as bad.

They did NOTHING after the game went to 182 penalty minutes, and you wonder about those who were saying “WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR THE NHL TO DO SOMETHING”. Well we still don’t know, but so far it’s slightly short of paralysis.

Quite simply because there are players in the league like Chara who don’t care for the well being of other players.

  82. habsman-itoba says:

I wonder why the NHL cannot see the logic:  Chara broke the rules.  In doing so, a player got terribly injured.  Shouldn’t the offending player be punished, not for intent, but for recklessly breaking the rules causing injury?  I mean, really.  People get punished for man-slaughter, which arises where the accused did not intend to cause death or serious injury but caused the death of another through recklessness or criminal negligence.  Are the circumstances that different?  Substitute “death” with “injury” and “criminal negligence” with “infraction of the rules”.  Chara recklessly broke the rules, and now Max is out.  And the NHL sits back and pats itself on the back.

“Oh, gee, officer, I didn’t mean to speed, run the red light, and plow into the line up of people buying Justin Beiber tickets, honest!”

I don’t get how all of a sudden this turned into a “clean hit in any other part of the rink”.  well, it wasn’t clean, it was late and high, and also, if I trip you from behind 10 feet from the boards and you break your neck, am I responsible??  after all, at any other spot on the ice, you would just get back up.  the argument hold no water and i am shocked at how many people in the media are trying to find justification for the hit.

Intent??  who knows, but he DID it.  That is all that really matters.  you drive through an intersection too fast and kill a child.  you are responsible.  Did you want to murder him/her??  I would hope not, but you DID and that is all that matters.  Same as with Chara.  Both know the risks involved in that play and in the car.

And kudos to Max, he is a tough fellow.  I hope he does get better and come back to the game even stronger…imagine that.

  105. tbonesr says:

happy to hear you are feeling better max-pac. listening to hnic radio on sirius, cannot believe how “in the know” commentators believe this was simply a hockey play. some even have the audacity to say max is half responsible for not protecting himself!!! question : what if it was luke schenn or mikhail grabobski? and where is pierre gauthier?

  106. homerbowen says:

Take the emotion out now that 24hrs has passed. Yes, in my opinion, Chara should have been suspended for shoving Max’ head into the tranchion, but the League chose not to so move on. No sense us looking for retribution as they have at least 3 players that can kick the crap out of anyone on our team, although I would love to see Gomez go wiith him. So what else can we do, well how about go out and win most of the remaining games for a start.

As for the Quebec Govt seeking an investigation…forget it as it just makes us look like cry babies.

As for Air Canada`s threats to cancel NHL sponsorship…geez why do that. Would they have done that if it happened in Columbus in a game between the Bluejackets and the Blues, somehow I doubt it. They should stick to what they do best fly people from point A to point B safely, comfortably and on time.

  107. Lafrich says:

One of the arguments that drives me nuts is the one about how if this happened somewhere else on the ice, he would be ok. There are hundreds of plays EVERY game where a player could take advantage of that post, but they don’t! Why? Because it is dirty and disgusting!!! Why is this looked at any differently???

  108. jbroderi says:

that news is awesome!!!  I hope he takes it slow, there is no rush.  Like I said earlier.  I can see him scoring a game winning goal in mid june, just not sure if it is this year!

Bettman’s comments today are just more proof of what a scummy low life he is.

He should never show up to the Bell Centre again cause he doesn’t deserve to breath the same air as Pacioretty. The blame the victim mentality in the NHL head office is a joke

  111. habs63 says:

Best news I’ve heard since the injury… man, the kid is made of stern stuff! I hope he recovers completely and gets his career back on track soon. Just imagine the reception he’s gonna get at his first home game… the crowd on its feet, him skating around, a deafening roar from the crowd, who then start chanting his name like something out of Gladiator… “Maximus, Maximus, Maximus!!”

I’m hoping they get flooded with calls, have to turn off their phones and get a new number. Bettman has a hard head, you need everything to collapse around him and the more the better. If all he’s hearing is talk about players safety day and night you would think he would eventually do something. I know I could be wrong and he probably will quit before making the big change. I personally haven’t called and not many people have tried but if you have the balls, you have the number.

Air Canada, Scotiabank, Tim Hortons, Visa and Canadian Tire are all mentioned in this article for various statements and stances (ranging from big by Air Canada to modest by Canadian Tire). It’s we as fans and customers that can put pressure and accolades on these companies to and for making their disfavour with the state of the game known to the league.

  123. geo_habsgo says:

so bettman you stole our nords from us, now play games like one day we will have a team again if quebec and canadian taxpayers pay for a new hockey rink – well maybe when or if bruins meet habs in these playoffs , and bruins arrive at bell centre, quebec justice dept. arrests and charges chara with assault and takes him to the dogpound!

  139. Nahlsy says:

Good luck on your rehab Wolverine, hopefully you can come back at 100% and continue to have a long and healthy career!

  140. mb says:

Having a broken vertebrae, itself, isn’t far worse from having any other bone fracture.  However, if the vertebrae is displaced, then major problems may occur, because the nerves and roots in the spine can be compressed.  In Pacioretty’s case, the injury is on C4 vertebrae… and in C4 is the root that innervates the diaphragm, the muscle responsible for breathing.  If it had been displaced, and the root had been compressed, then he could just have stopped breathing.  THAT, to me, is what’s the most disgusting… He was “that” close to have serious breathing issues.

But then again, that’s not worth a fine, right? a suspension?    NHL has become a joke.

  141. SPATS says:

VERY HAPPY TO HEAR HOW TOUGH OUR MAXPAC REALLY IS…

THIS IS A REPOST WITH A DIFFERENT ANGLE SHOWING INTENT TO INJURE

It’s all here from a different angle. At 1:24 on this clip    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zq7b6QhVdA&feature=aso   you’ll see the hit from Carey’s pont of view. Very obvious Chara knew where they were on the ice, and who he was engaged with. Even the NESN Bruins commentators acknowledge Chara was in the wrong to finish this check. To say that their history was not a part of this is simply ridiculous. Watch and listen to the NESN guys describe Chara as he’s 3rd man in and hunting for Pacioretty in this video at 1:27     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQFX3WaX0Ek  His intention was to get revenge but he’d have to wait another couple of weeks…  you can’t claim it was unfortunate. You meant to do what you did Chara.

  142. Trisomy 21 says:

It is funny that Bettman said he’s received support from two teams… Who Boston and Phoenix?

  143. Praj12 says:

Just read an article in the G&M and they were discussing whether the federal government should be involved in this issue. I say yes they should be involved. The Government should step in and  BAN CHARA from entering Canada for an entire year. This would really send a message that this type of behaviour is not accepted in our country and our national sport regardless of what that RAT Bettman thinks.

  144. NoTinFoilCups says:

It’s such a relief to hear Max is up and walking so soon. A good sign that he will make a full recovery. I finally got to see video of the incident this morning and felt sick to my stomach. What is it going to take to get this crap out of the game?

Cammy was right on when he said there are two types of hits, to take an opponent out of the play or do damage when you find a player in a vulnerable situation. According to what Gomez said about players awareness of this area of the rink the check definitely falls into the latter category.

  145. Laramy87 says:

  151. nfldanchor says:

Chara is now known as a dirty player and when he hits the next player on another team the reaction will be much different. He will be a marked man because I believe that most Nhl players will take exception to any late or illegal hits he makes in the future.

Anyways, I hope to see more Patches jerseys soon, ’cause right now, the only people wearing Patches stuff that I’ve ever seen are Pacioretty himself, myself, and that girl.

  155. aemarchand11 says:

  164. ed lopaz says:

I have not been able to think about anything since the incident.

The fact that Max is walking around just made me smile for the first time since that 4th Hab goal went in.

2 things really, really bother me about this:

    1) the fact that the NHL TOTALLY RUSHED to have a “telephone interview” with Chara, and did not take the time necessary to investigate all of the facts- as a radio caller mentioned on the Tieman show,

WHY NOT INTERVIEW MAX ABOUT THE INCIDENT AS WELL????

that would have taken 15 minutes and delayed the decision less than 1 day.

Max’s testimony is KEY INFORMATION that the prosecution was missing.

Max understood perfectly well how Chara’s elbow and arm came up, and forced him into the turnbuckle.

Based on his past history with Chara, and the way he was hit into the corner, Max concluded that Chara was gunning for his head.

Max is no idiot – he would not have made that kind of statement unless he was urgently trying to get a message to the league.

He was calling out to everyone to know that the league had totally missed the boat on this one.

    2) Gary Bettman.

Holy crap – does the NHL ever need a new commissioner or what??

Air Canada – a very reputable company and sponsor – has a problem with the NHL and Bettman tells them to take a hike!!!

If I was Air Canada’s CEO I would be fuming mad over this type of repsonse.

    Max,

From everyone in my family, we wish you a quick recovery, and the health you deserve.

    All the best, Max!!!

Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.

  165. ed lopaz says:

agreed  – it smells like they were rushing this thing through.

a real organisation should take its time.

the call on the ice was 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and a game misconduct.

doesn’t that deserve some time to work things through?

    why not speak to Max?

Maybe max would have said that it was NOT Chara’s fault – I was so surprised by Max’s statement, because

he really laid the blame squarely on Chara and his intent.

I can’t imagine watching the game tonight, but now that max is at least walking around, I guess I’ll try.

Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.

  166. Thomas Le Fan says:

Great news! Hope he recovers fully and completely. No thanks to the NHL and Chara. Meanwhile the NHL is determined to be brain dead dinosaurs. Air Canada, one of their biggest sponsors, threatens to walk away from NHL if changes aren’t made and the NHL’s (National Headshot League) response …

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told QMI Agency in an email Thursday morning the league will not get into a war of words with the airline.

“We referred them to our public statement,” wrote Daly. “We have no intention of engaging with them further at this point.”

I hope the Leafs enjoy skating around Herb’s Massage Parlor Centre. Beyond braindead, these people.

  168. nfldanchor says:

Chara is a caveman who should have been sent out of the NHL for at least 10-15 games. What a careless and reckless play that could have caused a life. Gary Bettman is another fool who tries to downplay the incident as part of the game. If thats part of the game then they will lose an awful lot of sponsors and fans. Protect the players first then let them play hockey. My kids are in Bantam and Peewee and have been taught you are respnsible for your actions on the ice since they were in Novice. Thats why suspensions are handed out for head shots and hits from behind regularly even in minor hockey. But the NHL which all the kids watch certainly set an example over the last few days and Bettman and Chara are poor examples for all real hockey players and fans.

  171. HNS says:

I love this news. This really made my day. One day at a time Max. This is not over! That being said……

It’s so difficult to let this go due to the gross injustice of the incident. Why is this so difficult for the NHL to figure out. The variations of these rules can be tinkered with in any way. Game suspensions should be given out as per offense. As with head shots….First time offense, 20 game suspension, Club fined $250,00. Second time offense, 40 game suspension, Club fined $500,000. Third time offense, player BANNED from the NHL, Club fined $750,000. After the incident of any one of these offenses, the team immediately forfits that game.

If these types of guidelines would not get a player to think twice about his actions, either the player is so stupid he does not deserve the privilage to play in the NHL or the Club is so ignorant in it’s management decisions.

    Screw you Chara you sh*thead!!

  172. J_P says:

    Seriously! Let’s see here:

    Crosby? Hit to the head.

    Perron? Hit to the head.

Pacioretty? Head forced into the stanchion by opposing players arm.

Seems like theres a trend emerging here…Last I checked, hockey players dont tend to just run into inanimate objects at full speed as gary seems to be suggesting…

WASHINGTON — NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says there’s no need to “over-legislate” head hits.

Speaking after a U.S. congressional panel discussion Thursday on encouraging American kids to get into hockey, Bettman pointed to a trend this season.

“What’s interesting … is that the rise in concussions in the preliminary data from this season seem to be coming from accident events, collisions, players falling and banging into other things, not from head hits,” he told reporters.

The issue has been front and centre this season, especially this week in the wake of Max Pacioretty being hospitalized with a severe concussion and fractured vertebra. The Montreal forward was slammed into a stanchion holding the glass at the Bell Centre on a hit by Bruins captain Zdeno Chara.

The NHL subsequently elected not to suspend Chara.

“Our hockey operations people are extraordinarily comfortable with the decision that they made,” Bettman said. “It was a horrific injury, we’re sorry that it happened in our fast-paced physical game, but I don’t think whether or not supplemental discipline was imposed would change what happened and in fact the people in the game who I have heard from almost to a person … believe that it was handled appropriately by hockey operations.”

The issue of head hits is expected to be raised again at a meeting of NHL general managers in Florida next week.

As for Air Canada threatening to pull its sponsorship over such injuries, Bettman says the league can find other carriers if the airline doesn’t want its business.

“Air Canada is a great brand, as is the National Hockey League, and if they decide they need to do other things with their sponsorship dollars that’s their prerogative, just like it’s the prerogative of our clubs that fly on Air Canada to make other arrangements if they don’t think Air Canada is giving them the appropriate level of service.”

  176. PeterD says:

This just shows how far out of touch Bettman and the NHL is with the average fan and the need to do the right things to preserve the integrity of the game.  At this point the lack of intregrity is appalling.

I hope Air Canada does pull their advertizing dollars…if enough sponsors stood up with corporate integrity and took a similar stance the NHL would feel it in the bank accounts and that would force action.

I also hope the Montreal Police take action in this incident due to flagrant and deliberate intent to injure Max…the photos do not lie…Chara intentionally raised his forearm up to Max’s head and neck area just as the stanchion came into the play.  Clearly, with Chara and Max skating int he same direction towards the boards and the stanchion, both players were aware of theri surroundings and the potential for injury.  THe difference here is with Chara initiating the hit and his body and arm position it was Chara that removed any option Patches might have had to not hit the stanchion…the effect we all see in the video and photos…Max’s head and neck being driven intentially into the stanchion.

Max, as fans we are all praying for a speedy and full recovery and no limiting factors so you can resume a full life in and out of hockey.

  177. ed lopaz says:

“Our hockey operations people are extraordinarily comfortable with the decision that they made not just comfortable- – but EXTRAORDINARILY so. who says that?

its absolutely a cover up for someone who has a TON OF DOUBT – maybe subconsciously – but there is doubt.

and technically, yes this was a “head-shot”, but the leagues priorities are obviously very convoluted if they choose to suspend a hit in which the player victim did not even fall to the ground, and having an incident where a player had his head rammed into a metal pole and was left unconcious for 10 minutes and fractured vertebrae go without any accountability.

    truly sickening.

  195. Admiral_Adama says:

This City needs to show its support by buying (sorry, but a t-shirt isn’t blowing anyone’s budget) Pacioretty Habs t-shirts.  Next home game, we Patch-Wash the Bell Centre to show our love and support.

    So say we all.

  196. Kain292 says:

This is great news. Absolutely wonderful.

Being a Habs fan is a way of life, and a great one at that.

  197. deggy24 says:

Sure have lost a lot of respect for these hockey commentators, half of them are blaming Max.

So their spouse gets hit by a car speeding (Chara’s trip on the play), zooming through a stop sign (the interference infraction), and the driver is drunk (the head shot, reverse slew foot toss into the turnpike); and you are going to say it is your spouse’s fault? And the law is going to give him only the speeding ticket?

Hey just a driving violation (hockey play).

  198. observer says:

yes there are corrupt judges as well! why is it anyone expects honesty out of that money grabber thief gary bettman?

  199. oshawahabsfan says:

Good to hear, we’ll be winning for you Max!

  200. Trenton_Romulox says:

Wouldn’t it be something if Patches came back and changed his number to 33?

  201. aemarchand11 says:

I bought a Higgins jersey when the new style edge jerseys came out.. Nobody had them, that I noticed anyway.. But then he got traded, so that is a major downer, but I still wear it.

Chances are a Patches jersey is next, just hoping he doesnt change his number If/When he returns to the ice.

    Go Habs Go! 2010-2011

  202. ed lopaz says:

    yes.

    strange but true.

Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.
