Training camp notes, Day 2

Habs prospect Alex Galchenyuk showed his considerable hockey skills at training camp on Monday.

“We like what we’re seeing presently,” Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said about Galchenyuk, 18, the team’s first-round at this year’s draft.

“One thing that he showed today is that he’s got tremendous skill,” Therrien said.

“I like his speed. I like his vision with the puck. He’s got a lot of poise with it,” the coach added. “He’s got a great shot… So there are a lot of good things out there to work with.”

Therrien likes the players’ attitude at camp, saying they’re ready to learn.

Asked by a reporter about the role he envisions for forward Lars Eller, Therrien said he’s at a stage where he’s got to take another step in his career.

“That’s the way I see it,” the coach said. “He’s got potential. He’s a young player still developing. But there’s a time in your career you want the player … to bring his game to another level and this is what I’m expecting from him.”

Defenceman Francis Bouillon, who signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens last summer, said he was “so nervous” two weeks ago, fearing the worst – that there wouldn’t be an NHL season.

With the lockout over, Bouillon said he’s glad to be back. And he called Therrien, who he played for during his previous stint with the Habs, the best candidate to get the team back on track.

The Canadiens have already sold out their season opener Saturday at the Bell Centre against the Toronto Maple Leafs and as of Monday afternoon only a few tickets were remaining for next Tuesday’s game against Florida. Teammates Ryan White and Brandon Prust dropped the gloves at practice Monday, but “we were just fooling around,” White said as the two tough guys get ready for the season. Read more about that by clicking here.
