In the Oct. 1 edition of The Hockey News, the magazine ranks the top 20 NHLers by position and only three Canadiens made the list.
Carey Price was ranked as the No. 5 goaltender, Max Pacioretty was ranked as the No. 9 left-winger and P.K. Subban was ranked as the No. 12 defenceman.
Taking the No. 1 spots in the position-by-position rankings were the Kings’ Drew Doughty (defence), the Rangers’ Rick Nash (right wing), the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin (centre), the Wild’s Zach Parise (left wing) and the Kings’ Jonathan Quick (goalie).
Other goalies ranked ahead of Price were the Rangers’ Henriq Lundqvist, the Predators’ Pekka Rinne and the Devils’ Martin Brodeur.
Meanwhile, the dispute over the legality of the NHL lockout in Quebec goes back before an administrative tribunal next month. Brenda Branswell reports that the Commission des relations du travail has called the NHL Players’ Association, the NHL and the Montreal Canadiens hockey club to a hearing on Oct. 15. I think the paper forgets that St. Denis should be in Hamilton this season won’t he? He would be a key veteran defender to help all the rookies on Defence there.
Also surprising they mention Gallagher and Holland as the only 2 forwards coming in from junior. Don’t they know who Michael Bournival is? He only played for Canada at the WJHC last year and was the Captain of the Memorial Cup champs.

Unrelated question to this post that may have already been discussed, but can someone explain to me what happens to a player’s contract during a lockout? Specifically I’m thinking of Scott Gomez and how if the habs don’t have to pay him during a lockout, it might be thin silver-lining to drop a year of his contract for nothing, assuming the lockout lasts all year long.
So do the players just not get paid until the lockout is resolved and basically lose a year of their contracts for nothing?

The only players getting any money are the ones who had a signing bonus in their contract for this season. Eg. Cole, Moen, Gorges and Price are getting some bonus money. You can these contracts at http://www.capgeek.com
I think THN got it correct by ranking Price at #5. Even if the order isn’t correct or a couple goalies are missing, I think Price slides in around 5th or 6th.
I hope the fans and media give him a break next year and probably the year after as well. The defense in front of him was brutal last year and Price and the Habs still managed the forth best record in goals against in the Eastern Conference.
As well, the team needs to score some more goals for him. Hopefully a healthy Markov with Subban on the PP helps in that department.
Price is one of those cases where if here were to go to another team that was further a head of Montreal in depth chart (St. Louis, NYR, L.A.) he’d dominate for the next decade or so.
Hard for Price to shine in the current environment.

Since there is no NHL hockey, I’ve decided for now to keep track of how our prospects in junior are doing. I can’t watch the games, but I’ll post each player’s points after every game.
Alex Galchenyuk had one assist in a 3-1 loss to Belleville.
Charles Hudon had two assists in a 9-4 loss to the Remparts.
Olivier Archambault had a goal and was a +1 in a 4-3 win over Shawnigan. I’ve read some good things about this kid lately, so I’m beginning to hope we might have gotten a steal. He’s been working hard and seems to have improved his attitude – or maybe he’s just grown up a bit.

Lundqvist is the top rated goalie, you have to look at the picture at the top. I made the same mistake at first too.
Lundqvist is no.1 on the list.
The listing is nothing but numbers game, where GAA, SV% and wins per games played rank the goalies. Goalies that played for good teams and got more wins will be higher.
That’s not correct Slovak; if that were the case, how do you explain Boston and Vancouver (most points in the league) having goalies ranked 9th and 10th (respectively) on that list? Also, Pittsburgh, with the second most points in the East, has their goalie ranked 16th.

I do not find this list more realistic, but it is unfair to compare the 2. Tsn’s list is based on last year’s stats, while THN’s list is based on ability and performance (stats do not always tell the whole story, especially for a goalie in hockey). Well that is just my opinion, you are entitled to yours.
Habs need one of their prospects to really come through in a big way, else it’s the middle of the pack for the Habs for at least a couple/three years. The organization needs someone to come out of nowhere and become a high-level player for this team. Either someone acquired in a trade or one of their prospects coming up. Who knows, perhaps Daultan Leveille could be that player. I am sure Rick Dudley was consulted before Leveille was signed, and Dudley’s got a great eye for talent …

Interesting responses to a post by a buddy of mine which I thought brings context to the larger issue of who gets the spoils of the game. He obviously sees it one (my) way, and isn’t too careful about his privacy and future ability to get more contracts.
HiB, the snow-melting driveway is one of the worst excesses we see in Whistler, a greenhouse-gas producing unnecessary luxury.
I’m not saying that all players are angels and owners are devils (again, I’m quoting someone else’s FB update), it’s just more anecdotal evidence that maybe shutting down the game isn’t necessary.
24 Cups, the boys are locked out of their job because they’re refusing to take a 20% pay cut. I don’t see the fact that they’re looking for another place to play as dishonest or immoral. When (not if) hockey starts, the Habs promise to be an interesting team. We’ve got a high intensity coach, and have picked up some high intensity players. So many times last year the Habs were just boring in addition to losing. I think this year they will be fun to watch at the very least.

with prust moen and white, i think we should avoid using players who all they can do is fight, and not actually play hockey.
We need a big defenceman that can fight, a John Erskine that can play number 6 defence and drop the mitts with anyone. We are tooo soft on the back end with Diaz, Weber, Kaberle. Our 5 and 6 defence man should be big and able to fight then we will be fine.

Frontenac, I would be so happy if Bergevin brought in Erskine. I think he could be had for cheap to. Chancilla, we need at least 1 or 2 crease clearing Dmen. If they get into a couple of fights in the process than I am OK with that. Players like Subban and Markov can handle some extra minutes as can Emelin.
i think Price is definitely better than Brodeur at this point. However you could make a case for Miller, or Cam Ward on a terrible Canes team. If Mike smith has another great year, then he is also part of the elite.

Pleks is good. Everytime I see highlights or hear about the other leagues it makes me more angry about them not being in training camp

Amazing how well he plays when he’s paired with a quality player. Which is why I have an issue with discussions about trading him.
Personally, I find he’s under-estimated.
He’s our mostcomplete forward, I’m glad to see him having success, even on such a small sample of games.

He is a very well rounded Centre and an asset. I do have a feeling in a few years he will be dealt as he is worth a lot and this team is going to be deep at Centre and really short on LW
I think one of Eller or DD will be switched to wings, hopefully DD, and that would leave place for Galchenyuk while keeping Plekanec.
Highly possible. Do you think DD would lose some of his play making ability on the wing though? Who knows. If DD was only bigger. His vision on the ice is unreal.

Future offers from the league haven’t included the clawback, though SD. They need to agree on HRR, and agree on the % of sharing. Fine.

Rev sharing to aid traditional/legacy markets ought to be a shared 50-50 deal between players and onwers IMO.)
The NHL’s growth strategy isn’t unlike Microsoft trying to break into console gaming. Insane, right? They dumped over a billion dollars in the launch year of the XBox just to become players at the table. But over time, they rolled that over and now have, arguably, the most successful current platform given the longevity of the 360.
I might add, Sony did much the much the same with the PS1. “Compete against Nintendo and SEGA?! Are you insane?!” Yet sure enough, the PS2 may well be the most successful single console product of all time.
There’s nothing intrinsically bad about this kind of long-term thinking in the NHL, but since player careers are much shorter than the time it takes to make a franchise ‘stick’ in a brand new market, the NHL owners absolutely must take the hit for the plan. And if it stinks for them, it’s on Bettman to keep selling it to them year in and year out until they either succeed in growing new, profitable franchises or fold their cards and simply contract the league after admitting their mistakes.
Remember that this does not take into account markets like LA and SJ who have solid attendance but somehow lose money. The league and the players need to come to grips with the real reasons for WHY buildings that should be profitable are not. It’s been what, 22 years in San Jose, zero cups, 100% attendance over the last while, still losing huge sums. Why? Is it really player salaries? If so, it’s truly on the players to address this.
Right now I see a bunch of players who have never been locked out, being led down the primrose path by a jackwagon who cares nothing for sports fans. And a bunch of owners having their backsides licked and their egos stroked off by a toad who cares nothing for hockey’s most important asset, you and I and all of ours.

Asking a union to agree to a paycut as a part of CBA negotiation seems like a good way to force a labour dispute, no matter what the industry. A good starting point for the negotiation would be for the owners to respect the contracts they signed in the past and negotiate on what happens going forward. This is my biggest complaint about the NHL’s offer. It reeks of greed and short term gain while squandering an opportunity to fix the system long-term for all stake-holders.
Denying your product from your customers as a leverage tool risks slaying the golden goose. All for a few percent either way. Insanity.
The owners should get a more skilled negotiator. Locking the players out every time to get his own way lacks finesse and ability, it is the dump and chase of negotiating tactics. The NHL needs someone capable of win-win negotiation. Demanding an immediate salary rollback tells me that Bettman is an old-school win-lose type of negotiator.
Re: the ‘clawback’:
It’s not the same thing a asking for an immediate percentage cut of *actual player salaries*, on top of a percentage change of the cut of revenues, which was the league’s first offer; that’s what I was responding to in SD’s post. The league abandoned the across-the-board salary giveback in subsequent offers, which of course they had to.
(This is not to say that they aren’t triggering givebacks in other ways, of course.)
I don’t think there would be any CBA negotiations in the world, ever, if one side wasn’t asking for more from the other. I absolutely agree that signing contracts all summer with little to no intention of actually honouring them was dishonest & despicable on the part of the owners.
Denying your product from your customers is exactly what the postal workers did during the last Canada Post strike. The workers balked at adjusting compensation to suit reality, and in doing so, caused a lot of people to rely even less on a service that finds itself increasingly obsolete. I happened to meet with a few clients during that period in various lounges and eateries around my neighbourhood for lunch – very shocked to find posties sitting around drinking (at noon) and blaming the government for the situation. Meanwhile a lot of people who rely on CP to deliver payroll couldn’t pay their rent. Some of my clients use CP a lot. So, we couldn’t help but wonder what they were doing there, as their own golden goose was burning.
(It would’ve been awesome if CP workers could’ve gone and delivered mail in Europe, btw.)
In my opinion both players and owners are doing the same thing now. I don’t think it’s gonna be win-win, and I don’t think Fehr is that kind of guy either – just ask me and every other die-hard Expos fan. But the owners don’t like being told how to run their business, and that’s the bottom line of what Fehr is doing. It’s not gonna fly.
Instead of a rollback they are asking for increases to escrow, which has the EXACT SAME EFFECT

If I can nitpick though, Brodeur really shouldn’t be number 4. Yes he had a great playoffs, but he’s really shown signs of his the last few years, and that is his only really good playoffs since the lockout.

His best years are behind him I am afraid and he struggled at times last year in the regular season. Great goalie though and a great playoff run last year.
For Marty’s age his flexibility is amazing. Some of the saves last year were just amazing.
But yes, he should no longer be in the top 4 goalies in the league.
