New poll.
“… with Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberals, the New Democrats would fall to third with only 24 per cent support nationwide, compared to 29 per cent for the Tories and 39 per cent for the Trudeau Liberals. ”
No idea about Justin, but he sure is a sharper dresser than Harper or Mulcair.

Thankfully it is another politician entering the fray who has never held a real job. This can only bode well for the citizens of Canada.
Not a real job and family is wealthy….sounds like he should fit right in and screw up our country some more.
The liberals have put Ontario in a huge pile dung for a long time.

It’s not like Harper’s making secret deals with the Chinese or anything, eh?
He’s pretty good with his Dukes also.
don’t worry, the NDP will see a spike in support when Derek Clarke takes the helm.
If you would like to see what Canada would look like with the NDP in charge, look no further than Greece. Sick.
‘Twas a joke. Derek Clarke is the guy in the CHLPA stories that nobody seems to know or have seen…
Greece’s problem is that no one there pays their fair share of tax. Doctors and plumbers pretend they’re making 20K Euros or less per year.
Very sad news about Pascual Perez.
Yes, sad day indeed. Loved his Pascual pitch.

At the same time that the 500 players who like the owners’ last offer, I guess.
Point well taken.
After the last lockout, there were 131 union members from the previous year who did not return to the NHL after the lost season. Not all job losses were related to the lockout, but many were (due to the double cohort of young prospects who were now ready for the NHL).
The number I heard was 240 players who did not get another NHL pay cheque. Average that by about 1 mill each and that’s a lot of dough.
While I understand the point Prust is making, perhaps he and a few other players should have a chat with some of the players from the last lockout like Modano, Roenick etc…. who regret missing a full year.
Perhaps those guys should have a chat with Sean O’Donnell

Hey come on Ben, work with me!
A 43 year old whose career is over compared with a 23 or 24 year old? That’s a fair comparison. One guy who has made his millions compared to those who have just begun. How brave of O’Donnell.
Also the fact Cal that he is presently a UFA and will most likely be tits up this season when it comes to a team to play for. Most likely retire anyway so he is being politically correct with the NHLPA agenda.
They’re probably afraid of getting heavily fined by Lord Bettman.
This Derek Clarke story gets more and more bizarre by the hour.

Looks like 1 person trying to take advantage of the murky waters to stir up things and defraud players. The CHLPA may be taking lessons from Alan Eagleson.
This doesn’t make BGL look good either.

BGL hasn’t loked good since he brought his “pacification code” to Montreal.
It was announced this week that the Toronto Star will be joining the Globe & Mail in terms of creating digital subscription plans to charge users for online content. I believe the Star’s paywall will begin in the new year.
I mention this point as a point of reference for the Montreal Gazette and HI/O. I think the Gazette will have no choice but to follow suit. Let’s say that a monthly paywall access fee would be in the $30 range. Would the Gazette also include a paywall fee for HI/O? And if so, how wouldit impact the site in terms of fan participation and HI/O ratings?
Let’s say that the NHL season starts in January and the Gazette implements a monthly paywall fee at the same time. The world that we know and love here on HI/O could be radically altered.
There are plenty of other free sites that you can leave comments on that people would flock to….
At $30/month, The Star will die a quick death. At the $10 to $15 range, they will have trouble enough.
There is too much free info out there and many of the younger generation are not used to paying for it.
I’ve got to stop doing things from memory! The Globe rate is $20 a month.
http://j-source.ca/article/globe-and-mail-launch-paywall-oct-22
I’ll use myself as an example. I’ve been receiving home delivery of the Star for more than 40 years. It’s an ingrained part of my morning ritual. Right now my monthly fee is $38 for seven day a week delivery. If the newsprint version stopped, would I be willing to pay $20 for the online version? Of would I re-channel how I obtain my daily news?
I would really have to sit down and think about it. Old habits die hard at the age of 63. Any “news” on Facebook or Twitter is just a bunch of “sound bites” that have little depth or thought. A newspaper has to recoup the major costs they put out for staffing. Advertising on the internet doesn’t bring in the major coin that print advertising does. It’s a tough call.
In the short term it won’t cost you extra. They said most current subscribers would get the on-line version at no extra cost. They didn’t mention stopping the dead trees version.
Even if they did there are still credible free news sources out there – CBC, Reuters, Canadian Press, and other wire services to name a few. Not necessarily Toronto centric but solid anyway.
I head out on Saturdays to get my Gazette. I’ve noticed the daily version has shrunk to a shadow of what it once was. I am willing to pay the equivalent of 4.5 X $2.50 for the digital equivalent.
Times change fast, don’t they?
Almost every newspaper that charged online subscription later abandoned the idea. The kind of people who get their news from the Internet are not going to pay extra for the Globe and Mail online. With all the aggregators and free sites out there, why would you pay?
Paying for News is like paying for porn.
–
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
This is actually The Globe’s second shot at a pay wall. The first one didn’t last long.
If indeed HIO becomes a paying site, it will just open the door for smaller blogs/forums to capture the HIO members not willing to pay the fees. Those sites usually have alot less expenses and so can do fine on ad revenue alone.
they will grandfather the vets for free , i hope
The Star had upwards of 400 comments on the announcement with over 90% saying “Bye bye”.
Not a scientific study but I think it’s safe to assume that on-line readership is going to drop significantly.
The other side of the coin.
http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/1280020–dimanno-star-introduces-pay-wall-because-it-costs-big-bucks-to-put-out-a-decent-paper
Yeah, read that too. I like Dimanno’s writing and all but it won’t change anything, the numbers will still plummet.
“it-costs-big-bucks-to-put-out-a-decent-paper”

That kid looks like a beauty.

6’1″ – 205 Lbs – from Medicine Hat
15 goals and 118 PIMs last year….I love it!
Does he have a shot at the Canadian junior team next month????
No, I wrote about the Canadian Junior team yesterday. Nothing against Dietz, but that team is just absolutely stacked on defence.
Ryan Murray, Dougie Hamilton, Scott Harrington, Morgan Rielly, Griffin Reinhart, Matt Dumba, Derrick Pouliot, Ryan Murphy, Xavier Ouellet, Cody Ceci, all trying out. At least 3 of those guys will be cut.

Oh Dougie… as a Habs fan and IceDogs fan, he is killing me.
The fact he is good and a Bruin bugs me (small blessing – he could have been a Leaf, so I have taunting material there).
But, in my opinion, he is not playing that well in the O right now. He’s turning the puck over a lot and making some pretty boneheaded plays. He’s definitely putting up points, but it seems he makes 2 or 3 huge gaffs and then picks up a point or 2 to balance out… watching him is like 2 periods of torture and 1 of “where was that guy in the first two periods?”
He should be dominating, but looks disinterested.
(Or should be in the NHL and that’s why he is disinterested…)
As the lockout progresses, these NHLers (Hamilton. Strome, Ritchie for Niagara) become valuable trading chips. If contenders know they are going to have them for the playoffs, then they’ll be dealt to allow for a quick rebuild. If the lockout looks like it could end, then the contenders don’t acquire them and the weaker teams will get caught with an inflated record, and no one to pedlle for the rebuild.
Niagara traded Beukeboom for picks last night.
Oh ya those are some names that jump right out at ya….
And ya, that is definately what you call “stacked.”

I hope Butthead and his gang of 8 eventually kill the NHL so it can be started over with people who care about the sport more than the bottom line.
C’mon Geoff, back him up!
Listening to the interview, I don’t see why he should get fined, he basically just says both sides are to blame and they should be playing hockey.
Heck, Daly said the same a long time ago!
RIP Pascal Perez murdered in the DR this am. On of the most colorful the Expos ever had….

Hey Stubbs, any chance you could encourage Gary Bettman to go along to the dinner at Moishe’s?
Maybe then he could see for himself that for some people, hockey is about a bit more than the Holy Bottom Line.

Bettman doesn’t deserve a free meal paid by Stubbs at Moishe’s. The greedy puke should be eating out of the garbage bin behind Moishe’s.
