The Three Stars of the week:
1. C Michaël Bournival, the latest addition to the Habs prospect chart earns first star honours with a goal and 3 assists in 2 games with the Shawinigan Cataractes in the QMJHL this week to help his team to a pair of wins against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and the Val-d’Ors Foreurs. He also scored a goal and assist while participating in the Subway Super Series, featuring the All-Stars of the QMJHL against the Russian Junior All-Stars. Bournival scored at least a point in every game he played this week in both the Super Series and the QMJHL games, he was the only prospect to score a point in each game he played during the week.
2. D Morgan Ellis’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles have had a tough season, with only 6 wins prior to Saturday’s game with Rimouski Océanic, he managed a 2-assist effort on Saturday and helped his team to a 6-5 win, earning 1st star honours and snapping a 5-game losing streak.
3. C David Desharnais, until Sunday afternoon, Desharnais had been riding a 13-game scoring streak that had him leading the Bulldogs in scoring with 5 goals and 12 assists in 13 games including a goal and assist on the week, including the only marker in a 5-1 loss. It finally ended when he went without a point in a loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins but Desharnais’s point streak is a solid indication of his output for the Bulldogs this season.
Worthy Mentions: Bubble Prospect D Greg Pateryn with University of Michigan had a goal and assist over the weekend and has 2G, 4A in 11GP this season. C Dustin Walsh had a 3-point game this week, 2 goals and 1 assist. RW Phillippe Lefebvre had his first multi-goal game since September 12th with 2 goals against Cape Breton on Thursday. RW Alexander Avtsin seems to be firmly back in the lineup after having wrist problems early in the season and has since played in 3 straight games and has added an assist to his scoring totals. D Alexei Emelin is currently playing in the Euro Hockey Tour with Team Russia and is engaged in the 4-nation Karjala Cup Tournament. Emelin is a +3 player right now and Russia has a 2-1-0 record. G Karri Ramo has started one game for Finland in the Karjala Cup Tournament and posted a shutout. RW Brendan Gallagher, despite having his first two-game drought of the season, managed to keep up in the goal-scoring race in the WHL with his 18th goal of the season, only one behind the league leader.
Question Marks: Bubble Prospect C Joonas Nattinen is still out on IR due to an achilles tendon injury. RW Danny Kristo went scoreless again with University of North Dakota, he has not scored in 9 of 12 games this season. C Ben Maxwell is still in a scoring slump, with only 1 assist in his last 9 games and was -4 on the week. C Gabriel Dumont who led the QMJHL in goals last season was scratched from all 3 games with Hamilton this past week. RW Ian Schultz has no points in the 8 games played with Hamilton this season. D Yannick Weber had a rather unfortunate -4 stat this week to go with his 8th goal of the season, his defensive issues may preclude him getting the call to be the 7th man with Markov possibly being injured long term.

The AHL Report: The Hamilton Bulldogs have been the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens since 2002. It is the most common route for developing Montreal Canadiens prospects into full-time members of the organization. Playing in the Central Hockey League for the Wichita Thunder, which is like a rung below the ECHL. Unfortunately the Wheeling Nailers are the ECHL affiliate of the Penguins also and at present, they have two goalies both in the Penguins system so no dice for him playing pros just yet, Mayer has to get a turn first.

He’s having a bad start, but his last two seasons in the USHL, NCAA and WJC were excellent. I’m not overly concerned from most reports I’ve read, he’s doing a ton of things rights offensively he just can’t bury anything right now, folks at HF Boards are concerned with it but have favourable reports on what’s doing right now. Snakebitten, but he’s still showing signs of being a solid player.

The difference between 5’11 and 6’0 is like nothing.
As for where I got 6’0, it’s from the 2010 USA WJC Roster on IIHF.com.
You make it sound like spending more than 2 years in NCAA hockey is detrimental to an NHL career.

I think Habs Prospects listed it, somewhere along the line some guy gave him an extra inch and I guess I just went along with it hoping he’d had gained an inch from draft day. I’ll adjust that and a couple other things for next week. I think it was reported he had a slow start last year as well but then just turned it on about 15 games in.
I think going pro next season is the next step for him though, he needs to get used to long seasons and playing in the pro leagues.

Hopefully Kristo’s struggles do not have anything to do with his suspension earlier this season. Most likely the suspension was simply a 20 year old kid caught having a beer (not an uncommon thing) and the two are unrelated. If he doesn’t get it going strong again this season, then it may hinder some people’s idea that he would turn pro next summer and join the Bulldogs for next season. Nothing wrong with spending another year in NCAA at this point, he can use the time to add some more muscle.
I noticed you list Kristo at 6′ but I see him listed everywhere at 5’11″ (including his
page at North Dakota)

Haven’t not seen either of them play since the pre-season and that afternoon AHL game I saw a while back, I haven’t had the opportunity to see a live Dogs game this year and really get a feel for them. I think Nash or Carle might end up doing spot duty but with Carle vulnerable to waivers, not sure how the Habs would feel about calling him up if he didn’t work out. My prefence would be Nash, big, seems to have better offensive talents than his NCAA stats indicate and I’d say better in his own zone compared to Weber.

Robert, Im interested to know more about Mathieu Carle and Brendon Nash, beyond what I see on Hockey’s Future. Bottom line, do they have the capability to fill in on the Habs if called upon?

So the waivers thing works against Carle at this point. If they call him up he’ll have to stay or we could lose him. In that case he’s either living on borrowed time because he’s not likely to get a callup unless they’re confident he’ll stay and because of that he would be the more likely to be offered in a trade. Unless he and management are happy to just leave him there until next year’s camp and hope he makes the team. Tough business.
However with Nash we can bring him up temporarily, give him some experience and send him back at will. And maybe find a diamond in the rough and he stays.
Is that correct or am I off base here.
Pretty much, Carle’s in a tough spot unless he impresses enough to move up and stay here. Nash, the issue with him is it’s his first pro season since leaving NCAA hockey and his idea of a long season in the last 4 years was 33 games.
We’ll find out soon enough, but I’m not confident JM would want Weber here with his defensive zone issues.

Agree. I was fishing around earlier today and throwing out names like Weber, Henry, Carle and Nash (last) simply because I didn’t know much about him. From what I now know (albeit brief exposure) he would seem the right choice. I hope they give him a shot.

I honestly do not believe he’s ever going to come back to the organization, he’s on the ‘protected list’ but I don’t see it happening. I’m holding out hope for Emelin and Trunev though hence their mentions.

There was a slight hope until 2007. But once he got a taste of that KHL salary, there was no way he was ever coming back. Not sure if he would have stuck anyway.
