There is no joy in Beantown…

Well, there would have been a handshake either way at the end of Game 7. Who predicted at the start of the series that the team seen at the bottom of this shot would knock off the team at the top?

… for the mighty Bruins have struck out.

In this bizarre playoff season, it probably makes sense that the defending Stanley Cup champions are out in the first round. After all, their opponent in last season’s final, the Vancouver Canucks, are also toast.

Joel Ward’s goal 2:57 into overtime Wednesday at TD Garden, coming on a botched Bruins line change, gave the Washington Capitals a 2-1 win over the Bruins, sending the Caps into the Eastern semis and dispatching Boston into a very, very early summer.

Tonight: The Ottawa Senators can bounce the East’s No. 1 seed with a Game 7 win over the Rangers in New York. And in Sunrise, Fla., the Panthers and New Jersey Devils are sudden-death, too.

Ouch: Chicago GM Stan Bowman pretty directly calls out goaltender Corey Crawford, and special teams, for the Blackhawks’ early exit.
