  14. JohnBellyful says:

None of us are experts on this site, although there are those who are extremely well-informed and articulate in what they have to say. What we share in common is a willingness to share opinions, for good or bad. They’re not to everyone’s liking but that’s to be expected when the community is as large as HIO.
But every village has its idiot, so let me try for your vote before the election closes:

Interesting stat, Boston going 0-for-21 on the powerplay and still managing to win a tight seven-game series. Habs, in fact, outscored Bruins on THEIR powerplay, 1-0. Obviously, Montreal was no match playing 5-on-5 but more than held its own when playing short one player (except, of course, when Gomez was on the ice).

So let me repeat one more time, and this will be it (until next season): It would be nice if JM had just once thought outside the box and experimented with the cherry-picking strategy I suggested twice over the course of the season. You know, where the team deliberately plays shorthanded by having a forward stationed on the other side of centre ice while play is in Montreal’s end, waiting for that breakaway pass. One, it’s got to unnerve the opposing team, knowing there’s a player behind them ready to receive the puck long-distance and go in on goal. Second, the stratagem could actually produce excellent scoring opportunities.

Let’s face it, the way the team is constructed and moulded, offence plays second fiddle to defence, and the Habs are gangbusters killing off penalties. Turn a defensive strength into an offensive weapon and rattle the opposition.

I know, it’s fantasy hockey, I’m living in a dream world, and who listens to lowly posters. It’s just that I’m so weary of watching predictable hockey, that seems to suppress the spark of creativity. I applaud the team for its doggedness in the face of adversity, and I give JM credit for turning the team into a cohesive whole. But his system does have its limits, and look no further than its meagre success in winning face-offs, a skill which would seem to be imminently more teachable than trying to create an offensive threat with soft hands.

When your team is as low-scoring as Montreal is, wouldn’t you at least try to come up with SOMETHING that addresses that lack of firepower? JM has two more years on his contract. I have faith he will use wisely the time and the talents of those around him to come up with System 2.012 – Now with Scoring!

  15. SeriousFan09 says:

So the knives are out I see with the typical ‘experts’ sharing their valued insight.

I understand the frustrations but what could we expect? The Canadiens needed to win this quicker, too many greybearded defencemen, no Josh Gorges to eat TOI, or Andrei Markov either. Wisniewski playing hurt for half of Game 5 and all of Game 7. Desharnais out in Game 5, he could’ve made the difference in that OT, or game 7. Lars Eller playing with a semi-seperated shoulder for the last two games. We were going in hurt and we only lost bodies going forward. A tough, hard series where we kept losing guys who could make a difference.

And before we start on ‘a better team would have won’ name me the last team that was missing two of their Top-4 defencemen, their power forward, their 3rd-line centre, had another defencemen injured and went really far in the playoffs. I’ll wait. You want to win it all, you’re healthy at your core, or maybe missing one key body, not four or five.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  16. solomio says:

And for the record the prediction ring has one man standing. He called the series. Good on ya.

  23. HardHabits says:

There are only two places worth finishing in the league, top 5 for a chance at the Cup or bottom 5 for a chance at the #1 pick.

    1 VANCOUVER – 10 NASHVILLE
    2 WASHINGTON – 8 TAMPA BAY
    3 PHILADELPHIA – 7 BOSTON
    5 SAN JOSE – 6 DETROIT

Home ice advantage is huge in a 7 game series and the 1-5 teams have that advantage. Unless Nashville, Tampa, Boston and Detroit all win which is unlikely one of the top 5 will have the edge going into the Conference finals and presumably win the Cup.

There is a 95% chance that the Cup will be won by either VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON, PHILADELPHIA or SAN JOSE.

  24. Sakus Evil Twin says:

Lot’s of talk about the shufflin’ of troops over the summer..

1st comment is that Gauthier is going nowhere. He’ll still be GM next season as will, I imagine, JM.

So that leaves the ‘system’ to work with.

Had a look through http://nhlnumbers.com to see which free agents would make the most sense in the system and, given those who are likely to be gone, came up with the following list.

    Tim Connelly (1.2M)
Joni Pitkanen (D) (4.5) – to me a good replacement for Hamr
    Curtis Glencross (1.2)
    Ethan Moreau (1.750)
    Adam Mair (0.5)
    Andy Greene (D) (0.75)
Ville Leino (0.825) although I’m sure he’ll be signed for more
    Eric Belanger (0.750)
    Pascal Dupuis (1.4)
    Maxime Talbot (1.05)
Simone Gagne (5.250) too much, but a horrible season
    Christian Erhoff (D) (3.4)

Not gonna get ‘em all, but there are some interesting fish in the sea…

No answers, just opinions. Bite me. Och.

  26. VancouverHab says:

My predicition is that they will keep Gomez in anticipation of (a.) a recovery from his slump year and (b.) a full season with MaxPac besides Gionta.

By the way, I love this article on the Canucks:

    http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/04/28/canucks-as-canadas-team-no-thanks/

    • ManApart says:

They will keep Gomez, because there is no good way to get rid of him. Can’t trade him, buying him out is stupid. The only option is demoting him. The Habs won’t do that. It would be a fiasco and would make Gainey look dumber than he already does. Molson would still be on the hook for his full salary. That’s just bad business.

      • Bob_Sacamano says:

Having Gomez on the ice instead of better players like Eller and Desharnais would be even worse. Making a mistake (and this is what trading for Gomez was) is one thing, not correcting it another.

    • LA Loyalist says:

Gomez played hard in 2 of the 4 games, which proves he was coasting and cashing his cheques most of the past 2 years.

I admit it is embarrassing to bury him somewhere, but I think it is worth it to send the message to our kids and other free agents out there that it is not acceptable to sign a big contract and just go through the motions.

Don’t even think about coming to Montreal if you are not prepared to bleed bleu, blanc, rouge and leave it all on the ice.

Gomez hosed us, royally and Bob exercised very poor judgment in giving him such a long contract.

We will not win anything significant until he is gone and replaced with someone competent who gives a crap.

Sorry, our young players deserve better, much better.

      • SeriousFan09 says:

Ummm, Gainey didn’t sign him to his contract Loyalist, that was Glen Sather. Try again please.

Canadiens will need to kick the tires on Gomez one more time before they dump him and we all know that, this was a ridiculously bad year for him and the Habs need to see if he can come back at all.

        – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

    • HabFarmer says:

Point taken in that article about Dan Hamhuis. When I saw that hit I immediately thought wtf, didn’t he just come back from head trauma?

Never liked the ‘Nucks, and never will.

“No, I see. The monkey’s out of the bottle now!”

  27. habfan01 says:

Anyone look at the NESN site this morning? Even when they win Bruin fans are total assholes about the game.

  28. Timo says:

Here is what’s wrong with the picture for this article. Was there a single Habs player ever sitting in Thomas’ kitchen last night? Everybody says “they played the hearts” out. BS. Nobody was going to the net, nobody was getting into the dirty areas. That’s why we lost. Thomas never had to make a tough save last night. Of remotely difficult shots he faced, they all went in. The rest he had a clear view with nobody getting even close to those 20 ft rebounds he was giving.

    • HabinBurlington says:

And that is why we need Max Pac, and about 3 more big forwards!

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

    • slamtherimtim says:

      you da man

can we end the martin system now , 2 years down why keep trying , how much proof do you need that it wont win a cup , i am tired of losing and really tired of GOMER and his 8 mil

      • HabinBurlington says:

Unfortunately, I don’t think G. Molson is willing to bury that much salary. That is the one advantage of Rangers, Leafs, Flyers their owners don’t give a Sh*t about spending money. I think we are left praying that a power forward with Gomez gets him going (i know we have heard this broken record).

As for JM, i don’t know. I fear he is a good coach and that is all. I am not sure about great. We expect greatness from the Owners, through mgmgt, through players, why not coaches!

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

      • ManApart says:

Before Martin, Gainey and Gauthier must be fired. The only way to slay the mediocre dragon, is to cut off it’s head.

      • duffy says:

They missed the boat by not getting rid of JM and promoting Boucher. I Wonder how they will feel when he hoists the cup.

  30. Mark C says:

Tim Thomas always seemed like a good guy, worked real hard to get to the show, and came off as a humble guy. That was until now, here’s what he has to say about Subban:

“I have respect for the Montreal Canadiens team and the way they played that series and the way that they battled, but to be completely honest, I don’t have respect for actions like that,” Thomas said. “That’s a travesty to the game. That’s not the way the game is supposed to be played. When I saw that happen in the first period, when he threw himself back on Campbell, it can be infuriating.

“If anything, it seems the refs let him get away with more, which I’m very surprised at. He’s making the refs look not good on a regular basis. He’s got enough talent, and he’s a good enough player that there’s no need for stuff like that.”

    Wiki
    Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox were the last major league team to integrate,[9] due to the steadfast resistance provided by owner Tom Yawkey. The Red Sox had refused to consider signing Jackie Robinson after a brief tryout at Fenway Park in April 1945.[9] Boston city councilor Isadore Muchnick spurred that tryout by threatening to revoke the team’s exemption from Sunday blue laws.

The segregation policy was enforced by Yawkey’s general managers: Eddie Collins (through 1947), Joe Cronin (1948–58), and Mike “Pinky” Higgins (field manager 1955–59 and 1960–62, special assistant to the owner 1960, and general manager 1963–65). A strong team in the late 1940s, the Red Sox finished perpetually in the second division during the early and mid-1960s, the implication being that Boston shut itself off from the expanded talent pool due to its segregation policy.

When integration did come, it may have been half-hearted. The new General Manager Bucky Harris promoted Pumpsie Green from Boston’s AAA farm club in July 1959, but Green did not become a regular player, though Green’s minor league record suggests he probably was no better than a fourth outfielder. Earl Wilson began a nearly five year run as a regular in the Red Sox’ rotation beginning 1962. Felix Mantilla was slowly promoted from utility infielder to regular second baseman from ’63-’65. By 1966, semi-dark skinned Jose Santiago had joined Wilson in the rotation and Boston had very dark skinned George Scott, George Smith, and Joe Foy in their regular line-up.

After a dismal ninth-place finish in 1966, General Manager Dick O’Connell promoted Dick Williams, manager of the club’s Triple-A Toronto affiliate, to lead the major league team. Williams brought along many of his minor league players, some of whom were black. The Red Sox went on to win the “Impossible Dream” pennant and battle the fully integrated St. Louis Cardinals for seven games in the 1967 World Series. African-American Reggie Smith finished second for the “Rookie of the Year”; George Scott had been third in 1966.

After Williams was fired in 1969, any commitment to a fielding a color-blind team began to slip. Perennially in need of pitching, the Red Sox made a habit of trading away its top black players.

Note – The Washington Redskins had moved there from Boston. Their owner was the only NFL owner to refuse to have any Black players, used to laugh at the media saying, “I’ll have Black players on my team when the Harlem Globetrotters have Whites.”

Richards, and all these Bostonians above and at last night’s game and other players obsessed with Subban are exactly what they are – racist bigots!

    • jew4jah says:

i don’t think it’s a case of racism. i think he just stands out in a mainly faceless sport. and the media is also heavily to blame, the hate-on for this kid is viral. nobody knows why they hate him, they’re told to. they’d boo him if he was smurf blue.

Moving from New Orleans to Boston, I was caught by surprise. I had never seen a place so segregated. Blacks in Roxburry, Italian in the North End, Irish in Southie.

That said, I believe that they were booing PK because of a perceived slew foot against one of their players and the fact that he was making their team look bad. I don’t think that Don Cherry helped either.

I lived in Boston for 5 years and though I saw some racists, it wasn’t the norm IMO. Then again, I was only there for 5 years so I didn’t see a lot of Bruins fans…

  34. Hobie Hansen says:

    So this is it guys….

I’m getting ready to sign off HIO for almost exactly two months until the NHL draft. I just wanted to make a few final points about the team and the site.

I think Arpon Basu’s article is dead on about this team. I may be wrong and a couple of my friends think I’m a little too overconfident about the Habs but here it goes.

I honestly believe this team can challenge for the cup as earlier as next year. With Pacioretty, Markov and Gorges healthy – we would have beaten Boston without a doubt. Price and Subban are in a class of their own and as Basu said, they’ll be playing on the Olympic team in 2014. Plekanec, Cammalleri and Gionta are all very good players so I think we really have something here.

I think people who criticize Jack Martin are completely crazy. The system he employs is totally fine with me. I think we have a better chance of winning tight games than opening up and going toe to toe with some of the teams out there. I don’t think we want to be exchanging 2 on 1s all night with teams like the Pens, Caps or Flyers.

So if Pierre Gautheir can add a few heart and soul players with some size and grit over the summer I think we’re right there with the elite teams. We might be a little small on our top six, even with Pacioretty and Kostitsyn, but it would take some sort of blockbuster deal to move any of those players. So I say they should make the bottom two lines real nasty to play against to make up for it!

Anyways guys, I could go on and on, like I usually do but before I sign off for a couple months I just wanted to say it’s been great debating things with all of you over the course of the season. All of you guys have probably taught me a little something and I’ve actually changed my view point on a few things that I never thought I would.

And thanks to all the writers and journalists who put this awesome site together for us!

Have a great summer guys and I’ll see you back here around draft day!!!

    • TommyB says:

I think your assessment of Jacques Martin is fair. One of the most often quoted critcisms on here from the “Down with JM” movement, is…”he has never, ever, won anything”. Some of these same people will look elsewhere and praise another team’s coach. One of the names that comes up quite often is Lindy Ruff. These people will tell you what a great coach Ruff is. What a great tactical coach he is (tactical, by the way, is just another way to say ‘systems’). Let me ask, what has Lindy Ruff, the longest current running coach in the league, ever won? He has won ZERO. Both as a coach, and as a player. I have no doubt, if I wanted to take the time, that I could come up with a pretty impressive list of NHL coaches who have never won anything. Jacques Martin is the right coach for this team, as it is currently built. You want to change the coach and his systems, you need to change the makeup of this team, and the overall philosophy that it has been built on for the last two decades. That philosophy being ‘defence and outstanding goaltending’ above ‘offensive power and muscle’. Nothing wrong with defence. You need it. You probably cannot win a Cup without it. But you cannot win on defence alone. The way this team is constructed, the coach has little choice but to build everything around defence. Martin does as good a job as anyone with that.

On a not so serious note, I’d like to point out that we won the game when we had Mara’s beard playing, and lost the one after when his beard was not on the ice.
    Think about it.
In the off season we should shop for players who can grow massive beards.

  37. longtimehabsfan says:

Go with youth, youth, youth. The young players this year showed that your scouting is better than people here have opined.

Find a way to dump Gomez even if you go the Redden/Souray route. Eat the money for the fans who fill your building up every game.

Don’t overpay to keep Markov. You have already proven you can compete without him and with PK emerging you don’t need him as badly as you used to. Besides, you can use some of that money to sign a younger player like the Wiz.

Sign Gill for one more year and let Hammer walk.

Resign AK46. JM will continue to turn him into a player.

Sign a UFA big forward if possible.

  38. Habitant33 says:

I must say that the Habs let it all hang out last night, and they should be proud of that. The series was so close that it came to a mere matter of bounces.
Carey Price was stellar, keeping the Habs in it after Boston took the 3-2 lead.
Not having DD, and Max Pac certainly hurt. But, you play with the cards you’re dealt.

The player that frustrated me the most in the series was Kostitsyn. It’s game 7 and he’s coasting around, turning the puck over at critical times. He just seems to be so non interested some times. Wheres the desire and passion.
I loved what I saw from Eller. I think the kid is for real. There were times when he almost took over the game himself, or single handedly almost won it himself.
If they address anything, for me it would be secondary scoring. The Habs did have injuries, but secondary scoring was an issue in the series.

All and all great season and series effort Habs!!!

    Go Habs Go!!

I would just like to make this post to thank all the people working on this website, be it the usual suspects, or the guys we never hear about. You guys have set up a really cool place for us fans to post, and discuss and overreact to very little tid-bit of information.
And I’m sure it was a very difficult thing to do with the new website and the name change, but except for a few minor inconvenience, it is overall a great experience to come in here and get all the information I need to know fater and before a game.

Thanks to the posters as well, with whom I don’t always agree, but have managed to educate me in all things hockey.

It might not have been the season end I wished for, but overall I’m quite happy with the way the team played, and I have to say they kept me entertained troughout the whole season.

    Looking forward to next season…

  41. Willy the bum says:

This may be the last post of the season, but I will make a nice one.

Our Habs had played a great game all the way, even though it is a tough loss. And in the end I didn’t disappoint. They indeed played one heck of a game, if not the whole series. At least we should be happy that our Habs may not be the best team this year, but one-of-a-kind.

The young guns are a dandy to watch; hope to keep Ryan White in the line-up next season, ’cause he really knows how to play fast and energetic. And PK Subban… nuff said, when he produced some of the most greatest moments that kept the team to the playoffs, what awaits him next season? DD, Pyatt, and Patches all made their contributions to the team and hope to see them again.

I also give my thanks to the veterans for their team as well. Although they may not get many goals, its probably their sophomore year as Habs (Gionta, Gomez, Cammalleri, et al.) which means they’re already set on their contracts, so they’re bound to have a couple of bad years. Nevertheless, what they produced is getting the team with so much heart and passion they got to where they are, of course it is not enough.

And the players like Patches, Spacek, Wieniewski, even Halpern – whose two injury-proned hits last night – managed to get up, come back, and played ’til they’re dead. Those are the kind of players I admired so much, and as you think there may not be any room or money to keep them, I wanted them to and be amazing to watch them play on our side next season.

I wish to spill out the negative side of things about the team, but – like I said – I didn’t disappoint. Several factors here and there, but they played like they never give up, and I really glad they did.

A long summer ahead, but now is the time to enjoy the things we all wanted to do…. until the next fall where our Habs mojo will come back to us.

Take care, and see ya next season… possibly!
    -Willy

For NOW, all I have is THANKS!

Thanks to Mr Boone and Mr Stubbs and writers like Apron Basu, who I always read with interest and enjoyment, even while sometimes disagreeing with them.

Thanks to THIS SITE! Thanks to Mr. Boone’s Blog! Once I discovered this site, and your BLOG Mr Boone, my participation in the season of the Canadiens was just about full. Thank You! I read your BLOG to feel part of a group, to delight in your often superb phrasing and yes to see me through the nervous times and to help in the times when I felt that if I didnt WATCH the game (but taped it), it will help the team win.

Thanks to the posters like Ian Cobb and Serios Fan and so many others I am not mentionig.. yes including you Timo (LOL). Reading your posts adds tremendously to my day.

And finally THANKS to the TEAM! Thanks for the season, even one marked by so many ups and downs. Thanks to P.K Subban. Thanks to Carey Price. Thanks to Max Pac. Thanks to Lars Eller. When my mind drifts to thoughts of the team, as it will time and time again during the off-season, I will see you as the VANGUARD that will lead us to a new GLORY PERIOD for the HABS.

Thanks to Tomas Plekanec and Mike Cammillieri and Brian Gionta and Hal Gill. You are the mainstays upon whom our youths of tomorrow will rely as they surge.

So today is absolutely a time to say THANKS.

    Enjoy your summer break.

PK’s goal last night was simply amazing.

It’s going to be a long summer….go Als go!

    • elliedawg says:

      1. Folks, Price was outstanding in this series. Without the superhuman saves he made in the third period, Subban’s goal would have been meaningless. A great goalie does not stop everything — a great goalie stops everything he should, plus a bunch that nobody has a right to expect him to stop. That’s Price, especially in this series. He is NOT the problem with this team. Clearly, there are other deficiencies — too many defensemen that can’t skate (chalk that up to injuries), long stretches with terrible passing out of the defensive zone (this means you, AK, but you’re not alone), etc.

      2. I’m most of you probably caught wind of this already, but in case you hadn’t, here’s a link to NESN’s Jack Edwards giving his incoherent, virulently anti-Habs post-game rant. This man is certifiable. http://fangsbites.com/2011/04/jack-edwards-puzzling-final-comments-after-bs-canadiens/

Benny’s disappointing but has a ton of talent – send him to Hamilton, look what it did for Pacioretty.

      • Mark C says:

Benny would get snapped up on waivers in a millisecond. He’s fine, just needs to decrease the bad penalties and work on that balance issue.

      • ManApart says:

I like your tag. People don’t realize how incredible Halak really was, and how singlehandedly he won those series. Price played very good, with stretches to great, this series, against a Boston team that wasn’t nearly the competition the Caps or The Pens were and it still wasn’t enough. If Halak played very good to great, Caps still win in 5 or 6. He had to be phenomenal to win those series.

  44. smiler2729 says:

Some of you people need to get your noggins out of yer rectums cuz your thoughts stink.

Hockey, if you know the game, is a game of errors. You force your opponent to err so you can gain advantage. So hockey players will spend a whole game trying not to commit the most errors whether it be the goaltender, the defencemen or the forwards.

Yes, even Maurice Richard made errors. You win some, you lose some.

But I think everybody who is a fan of this team and this game should be happy that their Montreal Canadiens are in the playoffs more than not and have done very well more than not. This playoff thing doesn’t magically land in your lap and some cities like Toronto haven’t watched their team in any playoff hockey for SEVEN straight years now.

The fact that the Habs compete level is so high should be applauded and we should count ourselves as lucky fans cuz as banged up and tagged as underdogs as this team is, THEY NEVER QUIT.

So insult Carey Price, Pierre Gauthier, Jacques Martin, even Bob Gainey all you want but you will only viewed by those of us who know as idiots.

    • habstrinifan says:

“Hockey, if you know the game, is a game of errors. You force your opponent to err so you can gain advantage”

Well said! We can decry consistently bad tendencies or laziness but to jump on one error committed during a game is WRONG.

In your statement there is also an implied advice for the management. The coach must adjust the style in the coming season so that the team is more often in the position to “force your opponent to err” rather than wait on them “to err” while you play constrained with fear of your errors.

    • Tony McLean says:

      Sponsored by Clearasil.

    • ManApart says:

Wrong. Those that are satisfied with mediocre results are the idiots! Go cheer for Phoenix if you want playoffs and teams that don’t quit. In this city, it’s winners are nothing.

In regards to not quitting, wasn’t this team up 2 games to 0 and 3-1 in game 3? They sure didn’t quit there. That is quit letting Boston back into the series.

  45. LA Loyalist says:

Q: the guys showed a lot of balls and character in this series. What they did not show (and did not show often all year) is the killer instinct. They often played to the level of the opponent. This series was lost in game 3 when they took their skate off of the Bruins’ throat.

    Why?

    A. lack of character?
    B. coaching? (I HATE le systeme, BUT if anything JM’s system should produce consistency if nothing else
    C. inappropriate personnel to execute said system?
    D. specific gaps in quality personnel
    E. Lack of leadership on the ice?

    Combos of above?
    All of the above?

    • Timo says:

You should add all of the above to your list of choices, cause that’s what I have.

      • LA Loyalist says:

My quandry, Timo, guys, is yeah we showed some character. Character SHOULD lead to the other qualities – killer instinct, consistency, etc., that we need to win the cup.

Getting Markov, Jorges, Pax back will certainly help and would probably have won us this series. But we want the Cup, damn it, and those guys coming back would only paper over the other holes that need to be addressed.

AND – do you think we will lose Muller this summer?

P.S. Guy Boucher’s team is in round 2, just sayin…

        • mdp2011 says:

          • Mark C says:

You mean it shouldn’t be considered a big deal when a team with a Hart finalist AND the second leading goal scorer beats a team whose playoff leading scorers were: Maxime Talbot, Arron Asham, Kris Letang, Tyler Kennedy, and Jordan Staal?

          • ManApart says:

That team has missed the playoffs 3 straight years. In one year, Yzerman and Boucher take the team to at least the 2nd round. no matter what, that is a huge success. Now that’s Management.

  46. 24 Cups says:

One day after being eliminated from the Staney Cup playoffs, Montreal Canadiens forward Michael Cammalleri has turned down an invitation to join Team Canada at the World Hockey Championship in Slovakia.

I wonder if Subban and Price will do the same?

    • Mark C says:

I think they probably should. While it would be a great experience, both of them have played a lot of hard minutes this season, and need some rest before starting off-season workouts.

    • shiram says:

PLeky is playing for Czechoslovakia though.

    • habstrinifan says:

I hope they both graciously turn down the invitation if it is made. They have both played their hearts out under huge pressure this entire season. I hope management tells them to go home (or somewhere) and puttheir feet up.

    • TommyB says:

Cammallerri probably needs a good amount of time off this summer to give that shoulder more healing time. I felt at times this year that he wasn’t 100% after returning from the injury. And Price has played, what, 77 out of 89 games this year? He should go home and relax. Rope some cows. Soak up some sun. Subban, assuming he has no lingering aches and pains, might benefit from a trip to the World’s.

Personally, count me as one who doesn’t really give a darn about that World Championship thing. It’s bogus. Too many world-class players are still competing for the Cup. If it’s the Olympics, and the NHL has shut down, then I’m totally enthused and it’s “Go Canada Go!”. But otherwise….pfft!

    • 24moreCups says:

Subban turned down his offer as well, he said he wanted to but he couldn’t because of “bumps and bruises” from the playoffs.

Price played great, and I don’t get why people are on his case this morning, as his number are excellent, and better than Tim Thomas’s numbers.
Habs are still missing that scoring touch, and our troubles with face-offs are also a major concern.
But I am very glad to have Price around, and hopefully for a good number of seasons to come. He and Subban have awesome chemistry and they should achieve great things moving on.

    • shiram says:

It would take a blind fool not realize just how close the series was, and how easily it could have went the Habs way. Hockey is a team sports, and for the Habs the weakness is definately not in it’s #1 goalie.
Bruins scored 17 goals, Habs scored 17 goals, and thats considering the Bruins had a better offence overall coming into the playoffs, so you can continue to spout nonsense, it won’t change the fact that Price is an awesome goalie.

    • HalifaxHabs says:

People are on his case, because they are Halak fans(or at least Gainey/Gauthier haters) who have been waiting all season to say “I told you so”… so when they say it today, they sound like retards, because it is completely unfounded.

Without Price this team wouldn’t even have made the playoffs, let alone game 7 OT.

    • 24moreCups says:

Who ever is on Price’s case or say he didn’t show and blame him at all for us getting eliminated can seriously go f*ck themselves, He deserves so much respect for being able to turn it around and a great season and he just build on that and get greater.

I’m glad he’s a Hab and hope he is for a long, long, long time.

  50. HabinBurlington says:

Someone earlier mentioned this about Markov and I would like to reiterate.

He is finally getting a complete season and off season to rehab his knee properly. I feel he was rushed back a couple of times to his detriment.

Also, we didn’t rush Gorges or Max-Pac back. This is crucial for their long term development as leaders on this team. While many of us would have loved to have had his skill on the ice, we weren’t going to win the cup this year, so at least we have not crippled their ability to help us next year.

NOW PG get to work, you have some serious decisions and work to be done. Time to earn the paycheque, and the hearts of us fans.

CHeers to all on this message board, could not imagine not having this venue to vent.

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

    • TommyB says:

You say “he was rushed back”. I don’t know if you mean the club rushed him back, or if he himself rushed back too soon. I doubt that the club rushed him back. More likely doctors felt he had re-habbed to the point where he could return, and Markov was eager to get back to work. This was to be his big year, leverage-wise, for free agency. It’s only natural that a player wants to get out there and prove his worth. Now the club has to wrestle with how much they can offer Markov, and weigh that against what is the likelihood of another serious injury. This contract with Markov may not be a slam-dunk.

  51. Jocko says:

One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention about the Mtl-Bos series…Habs lost 3 games in OT. Now, that’s bad, obviously, but it also shows how close we were to beating Boston.

It is also worth remembering that if the whistles are put away for the playoffs, they’re burned and buried under the ice for OT in the playoffs. Boston plays rough hockey that is often deserving of penalties, things that are rarely called in the playoffs and never called in playoff OT. Is it any wonder they won those 3 games?

Obviously things would be different without injuries, and it does give us hope for next season. But who knows how Pacioretty, Markov and Gorges will do after their injuries…who knows if any of the three will be even close to the same.
As much as I hate the goon fest, we do need to pick up someone who can play ~10min per game and spend time in the box if needed. Konopka (9pts, 26 fights, 6’0″, 211lbs), would be my first choice, and he does appear to be a UFA. Other possible UFAs, that might be better choices in terms of skill, are Cody McCormick (20pts, 16 fights, 6’3″, 215 lbs) and Michael Rupp (17pts, 12 fights, 6’5″, 230lbs).

Have a good summer people. I said all I want to say. I’m not happy with the result and I look forward to changes over the summer.

To H I/O. Please improve this site, it’s a joke compared to the old one. Why you had to go and change it all is beyond me. All you had to do was change the logo for god sakes.

LOL. That is possibly the dumbest comment ever made on this site!

No you are showing how immature you are joining Hockey I/O today (28) and then posting a couple of comments & then smiling you & parents should be proud of you/yourself…….

last night’s game was heart breaking. i can say all i want about how many penalties bruins got away with, how the 3rd bruins goal should’ve been disallowed, highstick by ryder and interference on hamerlick, why wasn’t ference penalized. but excuses are for losers. habs weren’t losers last night.with all the injuries and players playing injured we kept battling. kudos for price, subban with his wicked shot, and jm and muller we can bitch all we want about martin, but i doubt any other coach would’ve brought this team till a game 7 in first round with all the injuries.

and for bruins, lmao if they play like they played against us philly is gonna massacre them. although i hate philly, i hate boston even more.

Gauthier has a lot of work to do, although i like hamerlick i think the priority is keep markov, wiz, georges and get big centre who can win face offs. i love plecky but damn hes terrible at it.

anyways fellow HIO’s have a great summer and see you in fall, unless of course we land a big fish in the summer, but im not very optimistic.

GO HABS GO! GO HAWKS GO!

Yeah I was really bummed last night when we lost, and it still sucks to today but I’m happy that we battled to the end, I heard on the Team 990 that Eller dislocated his shoulder last night and kept playing, The Wiz and a bunch of the team was hurting but played through it, that just shows how much heart the team has.

Now we can focus on next season with a healthy team.

it’s sickening at this point…. NHL also equals chara

    • Chuck says:

I’d like to hear their justification for not suspending him. It was a shot to the head with his shoulder. He was aware of Halpern’s presence (thus you can’t claim ‘incidental contact’), and instead of avoiding him Ference took the opportunity to lean his shoulder into Halpern’s head.

he claimed he was a victim of a cranial malfunction.

on a bright note, we got an extra 7 games of great hockey. classic rivalry, incredible drama. this current montreal-boston duel is historic and i will remember it for a long time. it would have been nice to win last night, and we got as close as you can. we dominated most of OT. it boiled down to luck, and someone had to lose.
        meanwhile, leafs fans got nothing.

        can’t wait for next year!

I’m not sure why anyone thought it was worth writing the story. By now it should be clear to everyone that watches the NHL that the Bruins have a permanent get out of jail free card courtesy of hockey dad Campbell (and lets not even bother talking about the nonsense that Murphy is somehow completely separate and objective because that’s what it is, silly, transparent nonsense). Both the Chara and Lucic hits were worse and both received a free pass, why would anyone think this would be different. I don’t see many Bruin games, but no doubt this is the tip of the iceberg.

I don’t think you can level much criticism against the Bruins for playing the way they do. Should they take all the dirty shots they do, no. But seriously, they aren’t the best team in the league so they’re looking for every competitive advantage they can get. If the league is going to give you a free pass every time, why not take advantage. The one thing they can’t do is whine when Savard gets concussed. When you live by the sword, sometimes you die by the sword.

No, if there is someone to blame it is that amateur hour outfit called the NHL head office. The father of an NHL player is charged with the league’s discipline? How can they have allowed such an egregious situation to exist. Even the village idiot would know instantly that the perception of fairness is irreperably damaged by having someone with so clear a conflict of interest in such a key position. But Mr Bettman really doesn’t care, just as he doesn’t care about Canadian markets, the players or the game. He is only concerned with figuring out how to access the big buck US markets. If to do that he has to turn hockey into roller derby or let the occasional player be maimed or killed, so be it. The officiating in the NHL is the worst of any professional sport and many amateur ones. What has the NHL done about it, nothing! No one in the history of the NHL has done the game of hockey more damage than Mr Bettman. The pursuit of the almighty buck has eclipsed every other concern in hockey. I get that it’s a business, but surely there is a compromise out there somewhere. Sadly we won’t know until Mr Bettman finds a new sport to destroy.

I wonder how the Habs could get Mario Tremblay appointed as the head of NHL referees,or some other position that allows them to balance the equation?

I’m going to post one last post b4 summer but I’m too upset right now.

I think the important thing is big picture, not moving deck chairs around.

Gauthier’s target of “top third” as our goal? If I had been near him I would have been arrested.
