Melissa Leo would call Trade Deadline Day a total #$%^ing bore.
All Montreal Canadiens fans had was a hoax.
A phony Pierre LeBrun Tweeted Dustin Penner from Edmonton for Jarred Tinordi and the Canadiens’ first-round pick.
Plausible enough.
But not true.
Penner is going to L.A. for Colton Teubert (13th overall in 2008), the Kings’ first-round pick this year and a conditional pick in 2012.
François Gagnon just Tweeted the Canadiens will not make a move today.
Pierre McGuire on the Canadiens: “They’re an older team. The window’s shrinking on them. They don’t have a lot of prospects. Tough to deal.”
“Montreal is not that close to winning at any point,” says Craig MacTavish, explaining the team’s inactivity.
• • •
Very expensive price to make L.A. the league leader in physical Dustins.
And it begs the question: Did Edmonton ask for Tinordi and a first?
Line of the Day: “The Kings Speech is a Dean Lombardi press conference. And The Kids Are All Right has become Edmonton’s slogan.”
Late breakers: Habs reunion in Vancouver – Christopher Higgins and Maxim Lapierre.
REAL NEWS: Ryan White isn’t at a very spirited practice in Atlanta. Sending him down for Nigel Dawes?
OK, everyone back to sleep.
A chronicle of this non-eventful day on the jump
• Jason Arnott to Washington for David Steckel (the guy whose hit on Crosby started the concussion problems).
• Brad Richards stays put … and may walk for nothing on July 1.
• • •
Dustin Penner shed fewer tears than Ryan Smyth.
“If I tried to fill everyone’s expectations, I would have driven myself clinically insane,” Penner said.
• So a total stranger rings your bell and urges you to taste the pizza you just ordered. And you DON’T phone the police?
• Kings out of the Brad Richards sweepstakes. Rangers or nothing now
• Pierre McGuire reports Penner’s Mrs. Jessica Welch, is a Montreal actress living in L.A. “Nice little bonding there” remark convulses the TSN set.
• Whoah! This is a late biggie: John Mitchell to the Rangers
• Keith Jones likes Caps’ moves, Sturm and Wideman
• Oh, BOOST as part of a daily nutritional diet. I thought (hoped?) he said “Booze”.
• McGuire is working his Berry. News?
What we saw on TV and the Web earlier:
• • • Tweet from Paul Bissonnette (BizNasty2point0): Damn, Charlie Sheen sent right to San Antonio. Couldn’t “crack” the line up. Oh well back to the drawing bored.
Chris Stevenson of the Sun newspapers Tweets: Penner to the #habs? Lots of noise out there. They need the size, for sure.
On TSN, MacT defends Penner after McGuire disses the big lug.
• Peter Chiarelli says Boston is “tinkering a little bit with minor depth … we’ve done out heavy lifting in the last couple weeks.”
• Brian Burke: “Obviously a lot of key pieces moved well in advance of the deadline” but he predicts a late flurry this afternoon
• Another Florida move: Sportsnet says Bryan Allen to Carolina for Sergei Samsonov
• James Duthie: “You know that James Franco 127 Hours where he’s got his arm stuck in a rock? Feels like me right now. And I don’t have a knife to cut it off.
• Scottie Upshall is an articulate guy
• Chris Campoli to Chicago
From earlier:
• This just in: the official HIO Trade Deadline Day Lunch – tuna salad and a Diet Coke
• TSN talking to Scott Niedermayer. More interesting would be a substantive update on the man who scored the Golden Goal.
• Dave Hodge and panel talking about the inactivity. The problem: Not many teams are out of it and selling. Plus many big deals have been made.
• Peter Chiarelli coming up on TSN. We hate the Bs, but he’s a smart GM
• Gotta love those Subaru sumo dudes.
• Shawn Belle traded! Edmonton to Colorado for Kevin Montgomery
• On the phone to TSN, Rosty Klesla is setting a record for a central European saying “you know”
• • •
Doug Wilson on TSN: ”Every team in the league will tell you they’re looking for a centre and a defenceman”
• Columbus has traded Rostislav Kesla, and we couldn’t care less, except to note he was the first draft choice in the franchise’s history.
• Colin Fraser? Hmmm …
• Mathieu Darche is not on the trip and no one talks about him. Far be it from the Kremlin, of course, to issue any injury updates
Stuff from earlier:
Fans with espresso makers and strong stomachs doubtless have been glued to TSN coverage since 8 a.m.
Judging from the Comments, Pierre McGuire has not been kind to the organization that, amazingly, still has not hired him.
Biggest move so far: Washington gets Dennis Wideman, which shores up the Caps’ back end.
And in a deal with Atlanta that will see Radek Dvorak suiting up against the Canadiens tomorrow night, Florida acquires young and promising Niclas Bergfors.
Late Sunday, Buffalo landed Brad Boyes, giving away hardly anything.
Pierre? You awake?
Pierre …
• It’s waiver wire time and Bob McKenzie’s computer screen is frozen. Ottawa has claimed another goaltender, and Rob Schremp was claimed by Atlanta, which will have a new look just in time for the Canadiens’ visit tomorrow
• Breaking news! Dustin Penner has arrived for practice in Edmonton. Penner is on TSN, strolling in wearing a bcakwards baseball cap, a tee-shirt and a ski jacket. I’d like to see more intensity.
• Panger says Brayden Schenn isn’t going anywhere. But the Kings would move Wayne Simmonds. Hmm…. Pangers says it would have to be a “phenomenal deal” to get the 22-year-old power forward.
• Panger and Dutchy in window-pane checks. I’m SO GLAD I don’t have 3D.
• This is pathetic. TSN is flashing back to last year’s Deadline deals.
• Brad Richards audio from Dallas practice
• Down Goes Brown Tweet: Update: The fax machine in the Leafs war room just slowly spit out a picture of Keyser Soze.
• BlackBerry has bought a lot of time on the TSN special. So who do they figure is watching on a working Monday
• Red Bull. Now THAT’S good ad placement
• Craig MacTavish says Vancouver needs “depth on the fourth line.” Poor guys. Canadiens fans sympathize.
• I like McGuire’s shirt/tie/suit combo. A Montreal guy teaches those ROC schmucks how to suit up
• Michael Farber on the loaded Canucks: ”If the Stanley Cup is going to come down to whither Marty Reasoner, we’re all in trouble
• Dave Hodge: “It’s 9:35 on the West Coast. If Mike Gillis is still asleep, that’s fine with me.”
• Eric Duhatschek is talking about Vancouver’s “malleable” playoff opponents. That’s twisted.
• Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal Tweets: After seeing small oil forwards vs redwoods bruins can they really move their only big guy penner? Don’t see it even if penner has warts
• On a snow/rain/sleet day in Montreal, those California commercials look very enticing
• The hilarious Paul Bissonnette (BizNasty2point0)Tweets: In case you folks are wondering I have a no movement clause, but its from the middle of the bench
• McGuire leaves the set … in great haste. Shouldn’t have had the burrito breakfast.
• Pierre says a big one is coming. But he can’t say what it is. This is more mysterious than a CSI episode.
• Projecting the next Olympic team, Michael Peca and Matthew Barnaby both drop P.K. Subban. Everyone hates the Habs, eh? Mike Johnson defends P.K.
• Scottie Upshall and moves again, with Sami Lepisto, to Columbus for Rostislav Klesla who had been mooted as a Canadiens’ target

I agree with you. This management IS arrogant, and there have been several examples of this. And, you are probably right about AK46 and Gomez. Why would they be traded anyway – they never get benched for poor performances.
It’s the same with Eller. The guy is just not producing. He can’t score, and what he really needs is more seasoning down in the minors. But, management starts him every game because they want to show how great the Halak trade was. Why mess with this guy’s development?
I think Pierre did what he could feasibly do seeing 3/4 of our starting lineup in defence is now gone for the season.
The Habs don’t have much cap space left, and unfortunately, no one is gonna take Gomez off of the teams hands, barring divine intervention.
We are good enough to get the job done this year. The job at hand is to get to the 3rd round this spring.
It’s better than trading away all of your assets for an attempted quick fix, instead setting yourself up to be a non-playoff team for years to come *coughmapleleafssuckcough*
Then YES i would do that trade. Love PK but I would do that trade.

Blocked…whew

Dumont’s cap hit is $4 million for one more year.
Enough about Aaron Ward!
Hmm, replacing players who are out for the season isn’t improving or bolstering the team?
So the Habs are better off without them, right?
Yes, he should have traded half the farm and the next two drafts for Johnson and Kaberle.
Would you make this trade?
From Nashville: Dumont and Shea weber
From Montreal: Gomez and Subban
They’ve cut bait on mistakes before. Latendresse ring any bells? Chipchura? Hainsey?
I’m at work stuck in front of a computer for 8 hours but that’s still better than being in front of a TV watching TSN make up crap for 8 hours
)
“Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice – to win, or to be French-Canadian?” — Ken Dryden
Would be pretty hard to make moves to improve on Markov and Gorges….
He did acquire players to compensate for their losses.
- Yves -
One of my major issues with the Habs management is that they are arrogant. They never admit when they are wrong. I am convinced that AK46 will not be traded. The Habs will resign him also.
Gomez will not be traded either. He’s finishing his career as a Hab.
I’d love to be wrong about this. I would gladly eat crow on both these subjects and am looking forward to the day the AK is gone and Gomez is traded and some-one dregs up this post to nah-nana-nah-nah me.
Or better yet, the Habs win the Cup and AK scores the winner on a pass from Gomez. Yeah, right!!!!
Mr. Boone, Noticed you’ve stopped referring to McGuire as “your guru” the past few months. Glad you’ve finally seen the light!
Maguire would rather be managing/coaching 30 NHL teams in the Media with his extensive NHL experience from the early/ mid-90s & no actual NHL experience since………
We will be a non-playoff team for years to come with the salaries we are paying for the smurfs and some old goats on DMan.
Start from scratch, develop the youths, and perhaps we may find a Cup sooner in Monteal than going through this path of signing players who are past their prime.
With the way things are going Chuck, you will be content for the team to have entertaiing nights at the Bell Centre and hoping or should I say praying we do wonders in the playoffs.
That’s not what I want.
“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “
That tablet in Panger’s hands is a chinese ipad rip-off that runs on android. Hilarious that they tried to hide that by throwing a massive TSN sticker across the back of it.
i thought we had a ton of capspace with markov being out early in the seaon.
Boyes isn’t that great… would have done little or nothing for this team. But I think it is a good move for these crappy Sabres.
I would like Konopka…. tough guy and excellent on faceoffs! Would like Neil but he would cost a bit more. With one of those two I think our smaller guys won’t have to put up with the bullying as much. Do it PG, help your team.
ZK’s latest fight, in which he quickly and easily disposed of the Caps’ Hendricks:

I’m so bored I’m playing songs from The King and I in my head.
Gauthier adds Wisniewski, Sopel and Mara replacing Markov, Gorges, Spacek —— this is NOT improving or bolstering the team!
Goons are obsolete… for the love of god would you guys stop this nonsense?
Didn’t Florida trade Horton for Wideman?
McGuire’s angry-ish rant was kind of amusing.
It’s pretty close to being the highlight of this Trade Deadline Day.
- Yves -
I’d call it ‘plugging holes’…
______________________________________ Long live Captain Gionta.
C’mon PG, bring back Turgeon, Damphousse and Recchi!!
P.S. Odeline too
Very boring trade day. I get suckered in every year.
______________________________________ Long live Captain Gionta.
McGuire is a tool, I’d like to see him and Todd in a death match
Why, do GMs of other teams ever admit they are wrong? Like a press conference “I apologize, I was a tool for signing so and so.”
Yes, Boston also traded a 1st(15th) and a 3rd, while Florida traded Campbell in that deal as well.
Who on the existing Habs roster has a better faceoff percentage than Konopka? Who stood up to Komisarek and Phaneuf last week when they manhandled Pleks? who on the team is going to stand up to Flyers and Bruins muscle? I rest my case!
I wouldn’t call Neil and Konopka goons. They both can play hockey as well as be tough and fight. Konopka has a 57% faceoff win percentage! That would place him first on our team in faceoffs.
Really? That bad, Lenny?
Probably, and hate myself for doing it.
Hey Boone, what’s more pathetic… 8 hours of boring trade deadline TV, or blogging it?
with injuries and other issues it is amazing we are only 6 points behind the bruins…based on stats we should not be this close to them
goals per game boston 4th habs 24th
goals against 2nd 11th
goal differential +46 +1
road points 1st 25th (tied)
pp 14th 9th
pk 15th 10th
if these two teams were A and B and you had to predict how close they are it would be hard to predict that it is only a 6 point spread. .
LOL….good one Chuck
“Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice – to win, or to be French-Canadian?” — Ken Dryden
Not a chance. Subban is a hab for good
NHL.com has a couple advertisement scrolling across the top of the site.
They have a funny one on now which asks:
“What do you need? A Russian sniper or a Mexican fiesta?”
I repeat he did not improve or bolster the team. Even if they were not injured and those players of lesser ability not acquired. I said “the team” and again (so far at least) he has not improved it like other teams do as they bolster their team for the final run. Just as Gainey since 2004 – deja vu all over again for this management team.
Any chance you could turn this into the live feed like you do in your posts? Not that this is earth shattering stuff, but so far the most exciting thing about this trade deadline is the few seconds I wait while my page reloads.
Hello Pierre? You there? Sorry Bonjour Pierre?
Typical Habs trade deadline as usual.
Stay conservative, hope for the best with the players we have assembled, and pray we do some damage in the playoffs and perhaps to escape with a first round series to make the fans happy and say “better luck next year”.
“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “
Id take both Neil and Konopka. They would give us an awesome 3rd/4th line which we don’t have right now, not even close actually.
You know…I just might! Webber definitely offsets the loss of Subban and…wait a minute…what’s dumonts cap hit?
“When I was a baby I wish my first word had been “QUOTE”, then right before I die I could say “UNQUOTE” – Stephen Wright
No. The fallout of watching Subban become a star elsewhere would be immense.
Yeah right all those other GMs who try to bolster their team are idiots. Gauthier who has never even been to a Cup final series since he was in the business – about 30 years – is the smart one. Keep drinking the koolaid.
Keep Subban out of any trades please. Why trade someone with Elite potential who is contributing right now and is a major part of this team? I just don’t like trades involving Subban or someone like Patches cause it seems like a deal that takes us nowhere since we are giving up a huge working asset for a another working asset. It just takes this teams development in a giant circle. I also know that my reluctance to give up any of these young assets would mean that I wouldnt get anyone huge out of a trade. I guess thats why I’m not a GM :p
Ha Ha that would be awesome! Jack Todd vs Pierre McGuire in the Thunderdome!! And the winner gets banished! Perfect!
“When I was a baby I wish my first word had been “QUOTE”, then right before I die I could say “UNQUOTE” – Stephen Wright
Good news for you – you can watch ——– http://www.tsn.ca/live/nhl/TradeCentre2011/
Said this just as the other thread died:
Don’t forget, kiddies, no trade is better than a bad trade.
If there are no moves by PG today, all it could mean is that people don’t want what he’s offering, or want too much for not enough.
It’s easy to say “He’s an IDIOT!!! Godddd!!” if PG makes no trades, but if he gives away DD, Pouliot, and a pick for Dustin Penner, would that be any better?
Y’see?
—Hope Springs Eternal—
We need someone to take away a Russian sniper, and a Mexican Siesta off our hands.
All the GMs are on their lunch break from 12:00 to 12:45, so not much will be happening.
There’s Pierre Gauthier enjoying his raw carrots and tofu…..Brian Burke woofing down a porterhouse steak with 3 baked potatoes…and a pitcher of beer to wash it all down…
It will be up and running again soon!!!!!!
Sorry 001, but those stats you chose don’t mean very much.
That is to say, just goals don’t make much of a difference.
Whether you win a game by one goal or twelve makes no odds.
Just goes to show how selective stat-crunching can skew a picture.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
I’d rather a GM that doesn’t make a bad trade, than a GM who makes a trade “just to make a trade” and satisfy fans like you…to whom he owes nothing. He will do what’s best for the team, given the opportunity.
Have any better ideas then the moves he made?
Care to share?
Replacing or “improving” on Markov alone would be quite a task.
- Yves -
Relax. One, I repeat ONE of the sixteen current playoff teams has made a trade so far today.
Trading Pacioretty right now would be nonsensical. The guy finally finds his game WITH this team…..he’s going to be permanent 1st line material in the future. Why ruin this?
If Penner’s coming it’ll be Weber and Kostitsyn. And I sure as hell hope Penner figures out how to skate before he suits up for the Habs if he is indeed coming here.
We’re even more pathetic than Boone. We’re reading it.
…..aaand Conklin clears waivers. Bleh.
How about for the #1?
Penner for Webber and AK?
No thanks.
“When I was a baby I wish my first word had been “QUOTE”, then right before I die I could say “UNQUOTE” – Stephen Wright
Penner straight up for a #1 pick?
Definitely do that trade, but it ain’t gonna happen.
Can are cap handle it? I dunno, but someone here will know.
“When I was a baby I wish my first word had been “QUOTE”, then right before I die I could say “UNQUOTE” – Stephen Wright
3 salaries if spacek too? markov, gorges and spacek? is that enough space less wiz, sop?
I’m not going to disagree that the management team can be arrogant, but really, which GM and management in this league are not arrogant? At least, they don’t bolster about how good they are or how much everyone in the league wants there overpaid spare parts *cough* burke *cough*.
I will, however, disagree about Eller. As of a few weeks ago, I would have agreed with you. However, in the last 2-3 games, Eller has been playing center, with AK for that matter, and has actually looked quite comfortable and has produced some important points. Last game, he scored the second goal of the game, on a heck of a play by AK by the way, that gave the Habs quite the momentum going into the second.
I’ll reserve my judgement of the game agains the Leafs, as I only caught a portion of it. Versus the Canucks, however, he made a near perfect pass to AK, who ended up scoring the GWG. The issue was not necessarily about Eller playing with the big club, but Eller being put in a situations where he would not be succesful. Once again, I think the blame to lay here is more with JM than with Eller. Granted, he is responsible for his own production, but a player like Eller, who is good with the puck, strong in the corners, reasonably good defensively and a good passer should not have played 60 of 63 games with 4th line grinders. He should have been playing with skilled players.
This is a very similar situation to Spezza’s situation, when JM was the coach of the Sens (I’m not saying that Eller is another Spezza, but I’d personally take it if that were the case). It took JM leaving for Spezza to start putting up big numbers consistently. Once he left, Spezza was not scared of making a mistake, out of fear of being benched, or in his case, sent down to Bingo, and he flourished into one of the league’s best playmaking centers. I’ll concede, however, that many of those points and career seasons could easily be attributed to him playing with Heatley.
i don’t see them moving him, but why not get back a few 2nd rounders back in return if they can?

”If you’ve only got one day to live, come see the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’ll seem like forever. ” Pat Foley (Blackhawks broadcaster)
Just read what I said originally again. Why trade a better version of the player you just acquired if you felt you had to add that kind of player to your roster in addition to Simmonds?
Oh man is this site ever going to be filled with a cesspool of anger once that final bell rings. I’ll get my coat.
Yes but surely you can understand my confusion based on your spelling of the name Neal or Neil.
Im still hoping for Simmonds..
Maybe Penner comes in and AK46 stays as well?
We’ll know within about a 100 minutes.
I thought it was funny with more than a little truth to it. Lighten up.
so posting random twitter postings now? I’m sure that that editor from “all habs” magazine is a well known and respected analyst??
Boone if Kings wanna trade Wayne Simmonds Habs should take a gander.
McGuire won’t say…he’s too busy telling anybody who will listen e he knows everyone in the hockey world….
Getting players on the phone to let them know takes time too.
I wasn’t around for Larry’s debut in the league, but I do remember guys from Chelios onwards. He could be so much better if he’d rein in his enthusiasm and manage his minutes better. In my opinion, the next big step for Subban will be learning how to pick his spots. He tends to waste a lot of energy on pointless 1 vs. 4 rushes and chasing guys defensively instead of using superior positioning.
If he learns how to manage his minutes, he can handle the 25+ quality minutes that the truly elite defencemen in the NHL are playing. He’s never going to have more energy than he does now, but he does have a lot of room to mature in terms of playing smarter. And that gives me significant hope that he can become that superstar that so many seem to see in him.
Most of the trades takes a fews hours to make as the NHL office the agents gms ect need to look things over. It is not like EA Sports.
1. Subban is a 50 point man, but a +10 to +15 player over a season until he matures- if he loses that slo-mo windup on his slapper he will score 20 and get maybe 65-7- points.
2. A .915 goalie that’s dependent upon his D to have gusts up to .930. His playoff performances have to get better.
3. 20 goal guy- his lack of hockey sense will hold him back. His style has “injury-plagued” written all over it.
4. Pleks is a this peak right now. His average points in the season will hover from 50 to 75.
He’ll just talk about where they went to junior and who their junior coaches were.
@All_Habs: The biggest single addition #Habs can make to significantly boost scoring is a new coach.
Jack was stuck on the horse…..

What team would that be?
I’ve got a yard full of snow if anyone wants to trade…. I’m willing to be generous.
- Yves -
I just had a revelation: McGuire is Eklund!
Prospect Update:
KHL:
Alexei Yemelin’s Ak Bars Kazan has won their first playoff round, a 4-0 sweep. Yemelin has no points and was +2.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I’m going to need someone to explain to me why Penner is so much better than Kostitsyn. I just don’t get it.
…. it was a case of verbal diaherra….
- Yves -
And Jack just left town (but wasn’t traded).
______________________________________ Long live Captain Gionta.
He reminds me of Robinson when he broke in. He made me nervous sometimes, but wow, 95% of the time, it was incredible.
So, three trades so far today? That’s beautiful.
Was it someone who said Wade Belak was avalible?
Don’t we have Chris Nilan and Larry Robinson?
(I assume you’re writing from 1976)
violence is never the answer (unless the question is ‘what’s never the answer?’
1) I see Subban as a 15-20 goal, 50-60 point defenceman that will probably remain a bit of an adventure in his own end. I’m thinking a slightly more rounded Mike Green. Offensively, I can see him getting to that peak level in the next couple of years, defensive game will take another 5 years or so to fully round out.
2) Price might gain some consistency, but I really struggle to see how much he can improve on his level now. He might get his goals against average down in the 2.00 – 2.20 range, but that is going to depend on the team in front of him. His puck-handling, always touted as a strength, has been somewhat shaky at times but I think this is a department where he’s going to improve greatly as he matures.
He’s already playing very good hockey, and I quite honestly don’t know how he could possibly get much better. The key for Price now will be showing that he can steal some playoff rounds. If not, he’s another Roberto Luongo. If yes, he’s another potential Martin Brodeur.
3) Pacioretty is a tough one. I don’t see him ever scoring 40 or 50 goals in the NHL, but a 30-40 goals scorer with some speed is nothing to sneeze at and I think that is an attainable goal. So I’m going with a poor man’s Jeff Carter…he doesn’t quite have the offensive potential of a Jeff Carter, but could fill a similar role with the Habs. I’d say he’s still another two seasons at least away from truly maximizing his potential…power forwards take a long time to mature in the NHL, historically.
4) Honestly, what we see now is already his peak. He’s a very good NHL player, but I don’t see him raising his game another level. So a defensively responsible two-way center that can be counted on for 20-30 goals and 60-75 points is my expectation for Plekanec moving forwards. Plekanec’s play seems to be tightly tied to his supporting cast…if another line isn’t scoring, Plekanec hasn’t shown me that he can carry the load alone when teams focus their efforts on him. So a star player, but not an elite guy.
1. PK will be one of the best 2 way D man in the league.
2. I dunno how much better Price can get.
3. A physical 25 goal scorer.
4. I dunno how much better Pleks can get.
1. PK Subban – 60 points annually, +20 player annually. Norris candidate and he’s very likely two to three years away from being this kind of player annually.
2. Carey Price – Vezina candidate annually starting this season. Among the top 3 goalies in the league into his thirties.
3. Pacioretty at his peak will be a 30-35 goal guy. Among the league’s elite powerforwards. A couple of years away from that.
4. Plekanec is at his peak currently.
we need a tuff guy or we will never get past boston or philly, neil is still available
But would it be good enough to make it to the next Rock’m Sock’m?
“Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice – to win, or to be French-Canadian?” — Ken Dryden
Have we traded for Crosby yet?
I would say that the dream of an NHL er is to win the cup as well as make lots of money. How many times have you seen a great player ask to be traded to a contender! And I agree with H.H. ….for Les Habs a cup is 6-15 years away(cut that in 1/2 if you ditch Gauthier and Martin!) so the question is : How long will Plecs ,Pax,Subban and Price want to stick around!
Violence is the tool of the ignorant, bro. It’s only rock’n'roll.
It’s going to be a monster

The rushes I’m talking about are the ones where the team is often on a change or everybody is dog tired on the ice and he winds up and goes on a solo foray. Yes, it keeps the other team from generating a forecheck. But he’s absolutely gassed at the end of games, limiting his effectiveness when the team might need him to rush the puck up the ice.
Subban has yet to show that he is a threat to take it the whole way. He skates very, very fast but more often than not ends up in the corner. He strands his wingers at the blue-line as they can’t enter with speed, and he doesn’t score on those rushes much himself. I’m sure somebody with more time than I’ve got here at work can look into it, but I would hazard a guess that his end-to-end rushes have generated very few goals for the Habs this season.
His breakout passes, on the other hand, are of a similar quality to those of Andrei Markov and have generated quite a few quality scoring chances and goals, so I’d like to see him use that weapon a little more.
Chris Neil – Ott
….Hab4life….
Chris Neil is in Ottawa. James Neal was traded to Pittsburgh from Dallas.
yup! its towards the end , very awkward- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i5zXLZHGI4
Alright, on a note that is only tangentially associated with the trade deadline. I keep seeing people talking about Plekanec, Price, Subban and Pacioretty as untouchable.
So let me ask, SmartDog style, these questions…feel free to use comparable players or projected stats in your answer and indicate how far away from that peak you feel the player is:

This just in… McGuire just got off the phone with someone high up in an organization he can’t tell us about a major deal being done with players he can’t mention…
3 cinches
Now I see why you “habnofear.” You automatically predict the worst possible scenario, so you can never fear that your hopes won’t pan out. Of course there’s nothing to fear if you expect nothing good anyway. It must suck to always have a half-empty glass though, that’s kinda depressing in the long haul.
Kool-Auld
Because he plays for Edmonton. Kostitsyn is faster, with a better shot, better hands, just as good defensively, and the consistency is equivalent.
Penner is not the answer. His wife is a native of Montreal so he’s a sexy name and Gauthier does want him according to media types.
If he adds Penner I will openly question his feel for the kind of player who fits this team. Penner’s lack of speed will make him a non factor in this lineup.
Just saving his offense for the next round!
the trade dead line use to be a big deal and now just a opportunity for the various talking heads to yap at nothing. July 1 …is the real date when all the action takes place. I hope PG stands pat and does squat.
I think you meant Kelly. Neil is still in Ottawa isnt he and injured.
I like AK when he’s into the game. The last 2 games he played great! But what about the next 10 games. Can you count on him? He’s got great potential, but so did Alexander Daigle. He had 3 goals in the playoffs last year, all in 1 game.
I hate to see him score 35 somewhere else, but I don’t see it happening in Montreal… ever…
I don’t beleive for a minute that Penner is as talented as AK, but sometimes a change is needed.
Now, if we could find someone… anyone to take Gomez…
Well I’ll only say thats it is a very old “joke”.
is it on youtube?
IMHO adding Penner is a serious mistake. He just doesn’t fit.
It would be like us sending Desharnais to the Sharks.
Ok! I bow to your knowledge but PG should go as high as 2nd pick and prospect maybe.
By the way I am listening to team990.. Klesla on.. From month or so ago I had been wanting Klesla/Vermette combination.
If the Habs are either going to:
a. Do nothing/or little. Protecting our assets but not improving the team.
b. Trade for someone like Penner and over-pay because it’s crunch time and big goal scorers are high demand/low supply.
I would take a. I don’t love the team as it is, and would love to have Penner or someone like him, but the only things I’d want to dispose of either no-one wants or everyone wants. So we’re not in a strong place… gotta suck it in. Hope that keepign our assets pays off next year.
Kostitsyn will play well the next 10 games too, unless Gomez is his centre. This is true for almost all of the Habs wingers.
I really don’t understand why he is so expensive. I know he is only 22 and has potential to improve, but he is having a bad year and last year (his career high) isn’t enough to warrant such a huge trade value. Gotta think PG COULD make it happen..
Very expensive
Tony242 just Tweeted that the Habs are working a deal where they send Subban, Price and Deharnais to the Maple Leafs for JS Giguere.
It’s not the Kool-Aid….It’s what you put in it….and how many of your followers you can get to drink it.
Who would you like as a coaching replacement? Who’s available? My pick would be Bob Hartley.
Come on guys — if PG had added Wiz, Mara and Sopel today, we’d all be praising him for adding offence, defence and depth to a badly battered D.
Boyes got dealt to the Sabres for a 2nd, so to outbid Buffalo we’d have had to send a 2nd and a depth prospect or low pick, in exchange for a guy with a $4M contract and 12 goals. Andrei Kostitsyn scores more and earns less, and half you guys would ship him out for a sack of doorknobs.
What a surprise ?
Notice McGuire & Dutchy are never together anymore on TSN ever since the topic of Hal Gill’s “Big Stick” came up a couple of years back………..
1. Top pairing D, will be much better offensively if he doesn’t play PK minutes. NHL star level, but still not enough for Socci.
2. Carey at his peak will be pretty much what he is now, the guy can’t play that much better now can he? He is the sole reason we sit in 6th, without him it would be very ugly.
3. 2 line guy, 20 goal scorer at best, if he has a talented guy to feed him, maybe more. I like maxpac, but he isn’t our solution as far as our top 6 goes.
4. Pleks is at his peak.
Watched him in Hamilton, he has the physical tools but he’s got soft hockey sense and poor reaction time, just seems to react too slowly to the other team picking up the puck.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
you follow that goof on twitter?
Gomez and Gio aren’t getting any better, bigger or younger.
Pleks is in his prime right now. Get him a god damn goal scoring winger now. Dunno about Cammy…

Trading for Simmonds would be a “Hockey Trade” as opposed to a “Deadline trade” (if that makes any sense).
IMO i’d rather see the Habs make this type of deal. One that makes the team stronger for years to come, not a shot in the arm for this season.
The COL/STL deal is the type I’m hoping for.
violence is the tool of the ignorant and also a certain un-named defenseman/second or third line winger we apparently desperately need for our team..

Considering how quickly Subban’s defensive game has matured, I don’t see how you could say his defensive game will take 5 years to fully round out. He’s already the second best defenseman in our own zone on this roster. If anything I think his offensive game is what will take more time to hit its peak.
Neal was traded two weeks ago.
If you were Edmonton, woudl you do that deal?
gomez + AK + Yashin + Dipietro + Wade Redden and Brian Burke’s first round draft picks for the next 10 years for Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Luongo, Tretiak, and a limited edition pokemon ipad.
some of what guys want to trade here is Eklund worthy.
It’s only going to be Penner, Neal, Konopka or Arnott.
….Hab4life….
I’d do it in a heartbeat!

That’s the answer to your question in a nut shell

Are you kidding me? No way that deal gets by BURKE. He swore the LEAFS wont be fleeced under his watch ever again.
Penner may be too expensive. If so what about Smid and Brule? Both have an edge to their game and Brule looked good in his first game back last night against Boston.
i haven’t seen a kid want penner so much since that weird bearded guy that played guitar on the telly retired.
guess what dude, he is not coming to mtl…mtl doesn’t have anything to pry him away.

Yeah I’m thinking Edmonton isn’t that stupid.
Remember Shawn Belle? Well Edmonton just traded him to Colorado for a Kevin Montgomery. Wonder why Belle didn’t re-sign with the Habs and help with their Hamilton farm team. He should realize by now, that he has been with 4-5 teams and as never been able to stick with an NHL team, only with their minor league affiliate.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
Well I dont know of them, but that attitude is well known around here. kinda adds up after a while.

Just because he’s what everyone is asking for doesn’t mean they want to trade him…..;)
I liked Kovy when he was on his game too but for the majority of the time, his usual game was awful and I was happy to see him go.
If AK goes, I won’t shed a tear…..

GOMEZ FOR PENNER CAWLICE DE TABARANAK
All_Habs is a pretty solid member of the Habs Blogosphere with good reports, but he and some of the site writers have become a bit too much about griping that everything is on JM’s head in a Loss IMO.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
They should, but they wont. PG isn’t gunna do anything. IMO he already tried to make his moves this past week and nothing went through.
If I may, those rushes don’t waste time and energy. They do a great job of backing teams off on the forecheck.
If Subban’s a threat to take it the whole way, teams will think twice about sending two forecheckers deep into our zone. This is tremendously important when considering the lack of footspeed opposite Subban in Gill.
Subban will be a star. His defensive game takes a lot of unfair knocks. When he gets totally comfortable and confident backing up against the NHL’s elite forwards, he’ll be one of the best in the game.
ouch… Hope you did grow a bit.
Plenty of teams have been rebuilding ‘the right way’ for a long time, they’re still no closer to the dance.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
That’s the incompetent losers’ way to rebuild, you mean.
Philly turned around in one year with deadline deals and FA acquisitions and Detroit have had success due to an enduringly excellent drafting team.
See? OTHER ways to rebuild WITHOUT being an incompetent loser.
Agree?
5 years is optimistic, best case scenario for a 1st rounder picked this July. This is LAs pick, which will ceratinly not be top 15. For the 2012 pick, you’re looking even further down the road before you see a return.
The draft is actually a really dicey way to rebuild. But it is by far the CHEAPEST.
it’s all about timing though…The Oilers know they are years away from contending. The Habs are built to contend in the next three year window..or at least taht was the intention and rationale for signing s all those little guys to huge contracts. The Tinordi deal in light of the Kings trade may very well have been the Habs offer..and I would not have opposed it. If we do not intend to contend inthe near future then we too should be unloading …but we do intend to be a playoff team for the next three years so if a guy like Penner is available at the expense of someone who is 5 years away…you make the trade. LA’s organization is in a similar position to ours …and they took a chance …..I think they overpaid personally and I would have eben on the fence if we made the Tinordi and a first..but I could easily see how it could work out too. Detroit never has first picks..they fare ok.
The courage? They’ve had one 90 point season and playoffs since the lockout. They’ve been flat out bad, it’s pretty easy to admit you are rebuilding when you never make the playoffs. Bowing up and rebuilding a team that made the playoffs 4 out of 5 years is crazy talk.
They aren’t a 1st place team either. They are what they always are, between the 10-20 mark. Middle of the pack for eternity.
I don’t see anyone offering up a 1st for AK, let alone 2 1st’s and a 3rd!

LA got hosed. Not as bad as the Kessel deal but on par with it.
A 5’5 120 pound little man has courage when he is drunk also.
habs aren’t a last place team. Big difference. HUGE difference.
***Subbang!!!***
It would have been a close one. I would have been OK with Penner coming to the Habs for a 1st rounder and a roster player.
The Habs could have spread Penner, Pacioretty and Pouliot over three lines and really eliminated some size concerns. With a checking line featuring guys like White and Moen, Penner could have greatly helped our overall ability to make things a little tougher on the other team’s defence.
None the less, we still have our 1st round pick, lots of UFAs this summer and a decent team right now.
That scare about Tinordi being traded could have been ugly. In about three years from now it would be nice to see Subban, Gorges and Tinordi anchoring the defence. Very happy Tinordi wasn’t traded.
Penner to LA
the reason LA overpaid is because of all the prospects that they have. They are absolutely loaded in this dept, so if any team in the NHL would be able to sacrifice picks and prospects, it is LA. Have a gander at all the up and coming youth they have, it is pretty insane what they have coming up through the ranks.
pe….Hab4life….
I don’t get the love affair with Jarred Tinordi. He’s a good 3-4 years away from ever contributing to the Habs by most scouts’ evaluations of him, and his OHL performance this season has left a lot to be desired. Cammalleri, Gionta and Plekanec will in all likelihood be gone before he’s ready to take a regular spot on the blue line at the NHL level.
If they could get a guy that could help them make a run in the next year or two for nothing more than Tinordi and a low 1st round pick in a weak draft, I’d do that trade all day long.
And as always, I’ll save people from replying:
“That’s why I’m glad you’re not the G.M.!”
Good trade for The Oilers…….
I know you’re joking, but just for the record it’s 50* F and exceptionally clear, you can see snow in the mountains from near the beach. Denver has more smog than LA by far (it’s in a valley).
Got to see the Detroit Red Wings practice here yesterday after my kid’s game, they look calm and fast, it is weird though seeing some of them in black practice jerseys.
Why am I talking about the weather?
Because it’s more exciting then talking about what Pierre Gauthier had for lunch, and his lunch is compelling drama compared to… well, you know.
We are not better today, though neither are we worse, which I guess is better than a kick in the head with a dull fork.
I guess he thinks small, soft and intangible sells beer.
LA just gave up way too much for Penner
He’s right about that one BTW. The Oilers have the courage to admit what the Habs refuse to accept.
That’s a hefty package, but with LA’s stacked blueline I guess they can afford it. Always suspected sooner or later they’d start dealing their future D depth to go deeper on offence. Still seems like EDM took the better of the exchange, Teubert is a good piece for their future blue line.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Hell NO. I wish PG would move AK for a similar bounty.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
He’s 6’7, had NHL bloodlines, is tough, has a good shot and skates well but not great. He’s a leader too.
We need defensemen like him on the roster. Subban can’t be fighting our battles in 5 years.
Two things: First, people are high on Tinordi because he’s huge, he’s got the potential to be a shut-down defenceman who can skate, which the Habs don’t have anywhere else, and he’s only a kid. He’s improved in the second half of his first junior season, and if anyone can turn him into an NHLer, it’s Dale Hunter. Also, one likes to think the organization has gotten better at determining what’s a first-round pick. He may be 3-4 years away, but I’m hoping the Canadiens are still playing in the NHL then, and a kid like that will be helping them win.
Second, if Tinordi’s shaping up to be a long-term project/bust, what makes people think he’d bring back a part that would make the Canadiens contend in the immediate future? It’s funny how guys not good enough to contribute to the Habs would be great trade bait for better players in some people’s plans.
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
Am I ever glad he’s off the table.
As for AK, I don’t think PG would trade him for prospects and picks since that would people would infer that to be a “sell mode” trade. If PG trades AK, we would need a roster player in return.
I rarely agree with you but on this point you know where I stand.
WOW L.A. really gave up a ton for Penner
Scroll down. Or, up.
Cammalleri and Sopel are the only Habs on twitter.
I guess Penner WAS worth two first round picks if the L.A. deal is to be believed:
Colten Teubert (13th overall, 2008), 1st round pick and a conditional pick in 2012.
@ jeff
why are you on these forums, this website in general? amuse us in your witty reply
PS im sorry Reimer got injured
IMO a good trade for the Oilers.
TSN guys have been saying the Kings “need to reward patient fans by making a move”. They shouldn’t have made this move. Lombardi waited on the sidelines long enough to get totally boned at the finish line. Two disappointing years from now (relative) to LA expectations, they will realize how much they gave up for a one or two round run with an invisible non-power forward.
Come on PG, get in on THIS!!!!!!
leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
Edmonton loading up on picks.
That is the way to rebuild.
yep
Great deal for the Oilers, good return on Penner. Glad Habs didn’t make that trade.
No….
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
Agreed.
- Yves -
They still have Thomas Hickey down the pipeline, so I guess they felt that they could afford giving up Teubert. For us, had we dealt Tinordi, who would we have in terms of defencemen? I can’t think of any that play in North America at least.
LMAO….. Yah the Rebuild has been going on from 1990 on… Good Stuff Triple you make us all lol on here.
Got this off twitter, don’t know if it is an authenticated Twitter account:
you won’t get anything of value for AK…2nd rounder and good riddance.
Yeah…. that’s quite a bit. I’m a bit surprised.

Easy I make that deal, but Cal will never do it.
Holy crap….that would explain why no deals have been made…I blame Burkie….he drove the costs through the roof with the Kaberle deal.
I guess that Edmonton treated the Laffs offer of two 1st’s and a 2nd as someone trying to pull their leg, and went with LA instead…
Sit tight and wait til the draft at this point….

Well they do suck, they are at the bottom of the league and yes, for them, that’s about the only way to go. Can’t really say that about the majority of other teams though. And it certainly doesn’t guarantee anything for the Oil. It may be a good 5 years before they see those picks make a huge difference if at all. But for them, yes, it’s likely a good way to go today.
***Subbang!!!***
his potential is all there, not often you get a giant sized Dman that shows hockey sense, physical play, and seems to be able to make a 1st pass… yes, he’s likely not gonna play for habs soon, but its like a good red wine, a few years makes all the difference
That’s a steep price to pay for for Penner. Glad PG wouldn’t ante up for a player like that.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
That sounds like me in the 80′s.
LA got smoked……. Smog must be thick today.
Does adding Penner really make them a Cup contender – not in my opinion. So why “overpay”? Just because of the excitement of the day? Use your assets when you can maximize the return. Absolutely stupid to waste assets that took years to assemble.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
man did they ever overpay for penner.
they just set a really high price on the market…you guys still want to make stupid trades like this?
Let me add F***. That was LA panicking. If people here complained about a first and Tinordi for him, the Kings just made that trade. Plus, we didn’t get to move AK to them for a similar ransom. I don’t think Penner is that much more valuable than AK… Whatever.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
I don’t think the difference between AK and Penner is that great. Similar scoring. AK is cheaper, younger, RFA… Certainly, AK is similar in value to Versteeg. A first and a prospect would have been nice. In 16 minutes we can say we missed the boat.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?

ROFLMAO….. Skate circles around me… you dream big
.
You made my point better than I did, Rob.
the cap appears to be changing conventional thinking though….look how much these teams are getting for ther castoffs….if in year three or even two years from now we are on the outside looking…we cuold easily do the same…I think the NHl has become eerily similar to fantasy hockey. Timing and cap numbers have now taken control….the Hawks just went from Cup winers to probably missing the playoffs. There are diff;t ways to build but they all revolve aruond timing a run. The Flyers built around Richards and Carter remarkably quick, teh Pens just add peices to theirmiddle men every year, the WIngs have been blessed with some gems and organizational character that makes winning contagious, there is the tank in a great draft year or run approach. All diff’t ways..and all having been successful….I just think conventional wisdom is now irrelevant and that timing and cap dollars are the be all end all…almost like a hockey stock market…or fantasy league if you will.
Serious I know you’re pissed at me 1/2 the time but could you crank out a review at some point about our scouting?
Was it you that posted that we’d cut Europe down to a Tyrolean midget? Given our success with Halak, Markov… maybe Yemelin and the challenges of accruing first rounders shouldn’t Euro scouting be a massive priority?
What do you think?
In the past 10 years, Detroit and NJ won the Cup twice each. Every other team was either an expansion team or a team that had high draft picks or both.
NJ BTW had it’s fair share of top picks with which it was able to trade for better assetts.
Especially in today’s NHL with the salary cap it appears to be the best way to build a champion.
Here in Montreal we are forced to accept that we can win maybe if the stars align doing so with defense, goaltending and special teams.
Don’t hold your breath for the next SC parade.
So I am not saying tanking, but AK could’ve been unloaded instead of Penner to LA.
Habs wont do that though. Why? Ask PG.
Well we won’t have to speculate much longer HH. We have the real world challenge taking place over the next 5 years or so. Ottawa and Edmonton are taking the correct and prudent road in our opinions. Montreal is taking the conservative guaranteed short term playoff money approach to rebuilding. But I wonder if even PG, BG and Geoff Molson really believe this is the correct approach. Rather it is the only approach that the creditors and shareholders will stomach.
I don’t think it is a fluke that the teams ready to tank are owned by independent billionaires with no creditors to bow to. Mr. Molson’s prime directive is to make profit not the Cup.
Nope still 5’5″ but I weigh 145 lbs. I’d still skate circles around you.
I don’t know about “incompetent losers”. But I do think that rebuilding via the draft is easier on the payroll, which is probably more of a consideration in EDM than in PHI or DET. But like I said below, I think the draft is not 100% reliable as a rebuilding strategy. Unless you pull a PITT and suck so bad for so long that you score, like, ten #1 picks in a row, the draft amounts to a gamble.
Short-term thinking doesn’t help the stability of an organization, though. If your three-year window closes without a championship, you don’t want to have to start over with a five-year rebuild. You want solid assets developed and ready to take over for the next window. There’s a balance there, I’ll grant you that, but you have to look beyond the current group of players and consider how to keep the team rising, but stable, as the years pass.
As for Detroit, it’s been easy for them to trade futures and still contend. They had a solid core of talent better than any on the Canadiens to start with, and all in their primes at the same time. I suspect when Lidstrom decides to call it quits and Holstrom, Zetterberg and Datsyuk slow down, we’ll see Ken Holland wishing he’d kept a few of those first-rounders.
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
we do intend to be a playoff team – sadly that means only making the playoffs
Detroit is an anomoly in the league. They are the only team that is doing it right, year after year……
Okay, I watched the whole thing, but I didn’t understand the end bit.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that was the best deal he could swing. It won’t guarantee a playoff spot, and it certainly won’t make the difference in a series, IF (big IF) the Hawks make it.
hehe it hasnt loaded for me in 5 minutes.. I RSS feed Engels and every trade deadline the RSS goes crazy on HB, posting things from the preseason.
Neal and Niskanen for me.
The Wiz deal would look better if the PP mixed it up a bit rather than constantly trying to set up the set play slapper from the point. Teams have figured out how to pressure the point shot or block it, and the constant focus on moving the puck to the point (rather than in front of the net) in spite of this fact has led to a drop in Wiz’s usefulness. I’d like to see Wiz pinch in a LOT more, for instance. Same with Subban.
Campoli doesn’t change the biggest problem for the Hawks, which is that they can’t lock it down. They score so many goals, and give up an average amount of goals, but they can’t seem to translate that into wins. Sophomore anxiety? The Cup curse? I think they really miss Byfuglien.
Solely judged on a value basis, the Wisniewski trade is the best trade of the season.
The question I ask is. Does Chris Campoli make you better today? The answer is maybe. And a 2nd round pick is a lot to give up for a maybe.
That Wisniewski deal looks so good right now.
… as Camus said: “Sometimes the hardest thing is to not take what you don’t want.”

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
he just likes to hear himself speak, nothing more nothing less
That’s not smoke.
I don’t hate Penner. I bought him a very nice bike-pump for Christmas.
He’s a big guy that plays a small guy’s game. We have that already. His name’s AK.

Big mac, large fries and large soda at McDonald’s
Haha, don’t forget his being benched for lack of fitness and giving a sh!t. My point was rather that the very same HIO posters who tend to focus entirely on size and use buzzwords like “power forward” are now gooning it up on Penner.
we’ve already had a redlight ………………..plus we carey price who is better than reimer will ever be!
Weel I need a break from HIO. Gonna go get some serious trade rumours. What’s Eklund’s URL again?
He went to a training course on how to say the white things on TV
“tune salad”
Is that like shaking your ipod to shuffle it?
Adding a powerforward for the sake of doing it is a mistake. Adding one who can keep up with the rest of the skilled players on this team is a need.
I’ve seen faster snails than Penner.
Oh, is Pang black at TSN now?
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Because he plays less like a PF than Andrei Kostitsyn does.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
or… ‘My S4!t Coach Says…’
I want Reimer. We haven’t got enough elite tenders this season!
***Subbang!!!***
Only news emanating from the ‘bowels’ of the Canadien’s admin is that Pierre had a ‘lower body function’.
Alternative programming suggestion for TSN: Don Cherry stars in S4!t My Coach Says…
What’s with the hate-on for Penner?
Dear HIO. You can’t collectively bitch bitch bitch about getting a power forward (north american! young!) with size, and then complain if the Habs pursue one of the few that actually fit that description.
Upshall could have been good! Not a power forward but a good 2nd/3rd line player who gives it 110%. He could have ensured Moen remained on the 3rd or 4th line!
Had to go to the store. Did Pierre take that big dump yet?
this just in PG missed out on a huge deal becasue his cell phone was dead….
No. THIS is exciting…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
It’s kind of like watching a Hab powerplay.
you know what tradecenter needs? a 15 minute coffee and donut table segment.
Well Penner always gets mixed reviews. The fact about Penner is that he scored over 30 goals last year and should get close to that number again this year. He’s 6’5’ and 250lbs. He may not be a total shit disturber like a Lucic but I don’t think he has a problem driving to the net or standing in front of a goalie during a PP. I think you send a 1st round and Kostitsyn to Edmonton for him. His salary is on par with that of Gionta, Cammalleri and Plekanec and so is his production.
What a yawnfest, and I missed Three’s Company for this. PG you BETTER NOT wheel in Arnott.
Fixing the order on this so it makes more sense:
• Pierre says a big one is coming. But he can’t say what it is. This is more mysterious than a CSI episode.
• McGuire leaves the set … in great haste. Shouldn’t have had the burrito breakfast.
This is exciting!

So far trade day= wet firecracker!
Could have had Conklin for free but the window closed on waivers an hr ago. I agree, I would feel more confident with Conklin on the bench than Auld, but it seems that ship has sailed
Hilarious, watching the guys in the background on TSN flipping through their past emails / tweets while the guys up front try & stall for time…
this happens every year…none of the trades happen until the last mintue and then 4 hours after the alleged deadline deals rool in. There will still likely be another 7 or 8 trades if istory is any indicator…then again history may just be that.
Screw TSN Trade Centre. What a letdown. THIS is way better…

rumor has it
Panthers are sending Allen to Car for Samsonov
its pretty sad to know that florida has pretty much made the most deals today…
Conklin and Torts for Martin and Gomez. Seriously, if nothing comes out as an impact player, should any become available, I would love to see PG nab a ‘Conklin’ type back up to calm our nerves. I am not comfortable should something happen to our horse.
this year is diff with all those earlier deals. but you could be right as they want to keep the viewers to the end so they can sell more commercials.
I see Samsonov has gotta love that deal. I guess he went back to his old ways of being useless.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

Oh boy, first McGuire’s “long stick” comment, now this.
What happened to the “BIG DEAL” that McGuire was talking about. Was he just blowing smoke out of his a$$.

so what you’re saying is Penner is having Zednik’s sloppy seconds? Quite popular in this league.
pass me the puck bro
It has to be a NEW Zamboni or forget it.
“When I was a baby I wish my first word had been “QUOTE”, then right before I die I could say “UNQUOTE” – Stephen Wright
I like AK, but I am surprised he was not moved. It seems unlikely he will be resigned in the off season. So what gives PG?
If a GM identifies a player as non essential or redundant moving forward, he should proactively make the best deal and move the asset. Waiting till his RFA status is due makes little sense to me.
11 minutes left to get Ovechkin for a bucket of pucks and a used Zamboni.
Jessica Welch, Penner’s wife, is Richard Zednik’s ex wife…
Correction: 18 minutes left so it is probably still two brand new Zambonies and some goalie pads…
To Penner your quote,Jessica welched on Zednik…..
Hopefully he wasn’t traded for an old over the hill player.
White might be sent back down, Darche back? Playing 7 D? I doubt he was traded.
Darche injured and didn’t make the trip (renaud lavoie twitter)
Dawes going to be called up? Nothing against him personally, but our team is already so small up front.
I’m with you.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
AK for a 1st.
Check JT’s blog Bugs, The H does not Stand for Habs..
How about this freezing rain here in New England, surely i can blame that on Gomez can’t I?
F@#K I guess so. This is unreal.

Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
Mike Boone,
Thank you for writing about Eldon “Jim” Buck. I was one of those kids who used to go and watch these Wrestlemania events. My dad worked for that organization and as such, I was around Jim a lot. He was a tireless volunteer, a man who helped a lot of kids forget about what problems they may have been experiencing by involving them in the world of sports. It saddened me to hear of his passing and am glad that Mary Deros made the step of contacting you and thus allowing his good deeds to be known to a wider population.
Somebody should tell Ferraro to get away from Meth.
i know, i know… someone had to to do it though
There were REASONS for his inconsistency. We even managed to identify a few. If we find them, we can fix’em.
What are the reasons this year?
Well Bugs. If Andrei Kostitsyn has been inconsistent over the course of his professional career it would stand to reason that Gomez isn’t the issue for Kostitsyn’s lack of consistency.
Work backwards from there I guess.
And before I click on that link can I assume you provided statistics for Koivu vs. Plekanec?
Can I assume you evaluated Andrei Kostitsyn’s production level prior to being a professional and what he did in Hamilton?
Id like to meet you.
That’s the antonym.
Montreal ownership and management have no interest in improving this team !!!
IT’S ALL ABOUT WINNING……FU@K!
Yeah, that was funny. All things considered Martin’s doing a pretty good job coaching a team according to the TSN experts is slightly above the ECHL in terms of talent.
Nope. Pacioretty’s statistically better with Plekanec. Pouliot’s better with Gomez, though, considering the small sample size.
As for your comment below, well, no. The purpose of my blog was to compare the performance of the top-six wingers with Gomez vs.Plekanec. It really has nothing to do with Andrei Kostitsyn’s history or consistency.
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
It’s 7.35 million… and Cammy’s 6 million… and Hammer’s 5.5 million… hey let’s rag on all of them that make over 4.5 million.
…silence.
I hate “power forward”.
Why would you want too meet him. The guy has a criminal record for picking up hookers.
Hey Smiler,How bout how the veterans treat the team and the fans with 8 million per of fk’n production!!!!!!!!!!!!
What deal would you have made?
horsespit, rangers dumped Redden in the minors and watch them sign Brad Richards. Thats just BS fed to us by the Habs, just like we only signed Gio and Cammy because we got Gomez
Oh Captain my Captain…
In Montreal, Lapierre is the most hated player in the league. In Vancouver Lapierre is familiar, a great checker, and sandpaper.
What the hell…
Links work again!
You “drop” Scott Gomez to waivers or especially give him the Redden/Souray ride, you tell every potential free agent that Montreal treats its veterans like dirt and no one will ever want to play here.
Yikes!
I always suspected it but was too lazy to ever actually do the work to prove it. Thanks!
Those critical of Gomez and JM’s dumb coaching decisions now have proof that we are not idiot trolls.
Now, we have to listen to PJ McG talk about what the Habs should of done for the rest of the year.
Too small! Blah blah blah.
….Hab4life….
Know what? The angry mob here has good reason to be angry. Cool heads, PG, our kindly coach, and even some of the site admins will probably talk about how there was no deal out there, and that PG made the best move by not making the “wrong move”, and the obligitory “we like the players we have, and like our chances with this group” etc etc etc.
Balls to that. This is not a contending team. If the trade deadline didn’t have any moves that could have made us contendors (and lets be honest, it would have to have been several big moves, some small moves and well there simply were not enough pieces out there – even if we had much to offer anyon else – to plug all the leaks… But why not plug some? One? Why not dump UFAK46? Not like we’re gonna resign him, and it’s not like he’s carrying us to the playoffs. Send him packin for a pick. Or some waterbottles.
As for Gomez, he’s the one player you know could not be moved. The organization *has* to drop him to waivers, watch him clear with remarkable disinterest, then pray to baby jesus that when we put him back on re-entry, someone will take him for 4 million… Or just let him hang in the minors with Souray and Redden – either way, he’s off our CAP number.
But PG did nothing to help this team, presently or for the future. I’m sure there wasn’t much out there. But it’s your job as a GM to make something outta nothin sometimes.
Winning the cup is very nice, BUT after the win, you go back to playing hockey in the next season.
Selling the farm to have a fractional better chance in the playoffs is not a smart move
So Pacioretty and Pouliot are better with Gomez than they are with Plekanec.
Kostitsyn, Gionta and Cammalleri are better with Plekanec than they are with Gomez.
From an offensive production standpoint.

Another disappointment. A small forward corps gets even smaller if they call-up Dawes for White. It’s almost impossible for us to get smaller, but somehow we manage to do just that.
Our savior is playing junior somewhere — the question is whether we are going to have the picks to land him, and if we have the scouting ability to find him. Our success lies in our picks (e.g., Price, Subban). It’s clear that our management (PG, BG) has not/did not have the ability to give us the necessary horses to be a true competitor (they did give us players to make us get by).
Oh, you’re quick!

It pains me to think that the Habs couldn’t have gotten for AK what Edmonton got for Penner.
Idiots.
Great moves PG, just super! Middle of the pack losers again.
NADA nothing, watch out guys, it’s gonna be rough.
Could have had Penner but he’s too big to fit into the ToysRus dressing room Pierre.
BTW Tinordi is way overrated.
PK & Price will be long gone before he ever reaches the NHL.
Something wrong with picking up hookers? And you’re from Sask? That’s rich.
That was too easy.
For the record, I may have mentioned this before, but for the record anyway: could we please STOP with the word “pro-active”? Please? Exactly WHAT kind of OTHER “active” is there? Honestly. Enough. (shudder) g-g-g
Active as in bowel movements means you go to the bathroom
Pro active means you ensure there is toilet paper.
Clear ?
what do you expect from a Laff Lackey….
Yeah Bugs, I can. He’s been inconsistent his entire life. And that isn’t Gomez’s fault.
was looking forward to his being called up for days – thanks
Can someone draw up AK’s pt production WITH and WITHOUT Gomie, please?
Cuz if he ain’t traded, I have no problem giving him the benefit of the doubt going forward if the disparity, should there be any, is significant.
so agree
it kills me knowing we didn’t land penner
if only that tinnordi deal was true
but glad we didnt overpay like LA did.
hopefully habs make a deal today (hopefully ak46 gets traded) but i have a feeling nothing will get done.
Speculation he’s going to Hamilton, with Nigel Dawes called up.
Re: Hockeybuzz.com – take a look at the blog that Stu Hackel posted about that site and its main contributor.
Complete fraud.
How did you get your link up?
Actually i’m not from sask,i was there for a year doing s.w.a.t specialized training when i made this account. Mainly cybercrime training.
I am surprised the OIl have not moved Ryan Jones, a UFA. They have no reason to keep him and therefore could be had cheaply. But perhaps there is a line-up for him. He could be good for the Habs, fast and tough and good hair!
ya i remember a few years back trades were still being announced around 5:30 even. i read on hockeybuzz that caps are interested in arnott. makes alot of sense as he has “supposively” publicly said he would waive his ntc to go to a play-off team and the capitals attract a lot of attention with their stars and style of play. plus the caps need a 2nd line centre.
doink
whassup with White Booner
Yay.
Now I can stop listening to idiocy about Penner coming here and how great he is.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
Trades will be coming in until 4:30pm. Don’t be so sure he isn’t gone.
He was offered in a deal for Penner.
Simmons doesn’t know how that trade made the Oilers better. More reason to smack him across the head. Why is he on TV?
Exactly, you don’t think the Habs are going to resign Kostitsyn this summer so why not trade him and a 1st rounder?
Just in……Ak traded for Cristopher Bourque and Brett Sterling:)
Konopka’s gone to Anaheim.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
I’m hoping for Konopka – Habs need at least one player who can dust up the Brooins Thorton & Loocheech…
Other than that I like our potential first round against them – Habs (except that last debacle) have had their number for a long time.. Timmy T can’t seem to stop Hab players consistently for some reason..
rumor has it that habs traded a 1st and tinordi for penner
I want Penner, but not for Tinordi. Hope you are kidding.
Phone is dancing…. Text from friends in ETown no deal on Penner.
I agree, however Molsons need the playoff revenue.
First, the billionaire Molson don’t need playoff revenue. They sell out every game, they sell lots of shirts, they get all the revenue from Keg. Plus, if we use the usual yardstick of $1m per home playoff date, Montreal saves about $1m pro rated if they moved AK. I don’t think moving AK would have cost us more than one home date
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
Fake twitter account, so untrue apparently!
Whooeee PG made a trade. I wont be a critic now cause I wanted him to do something. I hope he got more than Penner.
FAKE TWITTER ACCOUNT REPORTING PENNER TO MTL FOR TINORDI AND 1ST.
Why don’t people double-check the Twitter source EVER? This is getting more play than Brad Richards to TOR did last night on the fake Lebrun account.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Trade is a fake.. LeBrun corrected it on Twitter
Sure hope it’s a fake – that’s a huge price to pay. Plus – have we got the room under the cap?
I don’t like it. Stupid Habs. Idiots. ANother lost 1st pick. Idiots. Idiots!!!!!
I am pretty sure Pierre LeBrun said he would be on twitter when Hell freezes over.
FAKE!
i think most would rather our team gel more and get more chemistry, than add 1 more guy that might, and likely wont, be better than what we already have (see salary cap)
EDIT:
trading 2 first round picks… that would be almost as dumb as the time we got gomez
+1
hopefully its AK46 going not tinordi
but even tinordi for penner is ok
I never check Twitter. Has to be the most over-rated piece of technology in history.
But I could have lived with that deal.
Haha. Gauthier would have been assassinated.
not at all plausible – that would be 2 first round picks for Penner – are you kidding me? would no longer be fun roasting Burke for Kessel if we paid that for Penner….
Samsonov traded.. Gawd – you guys rememebr him in Montreal? What a disaster…
Glad it’s a fake, but you just know that teams like EDM have been sniffing around Tinordi quite a bit.
Close call eh?
thank lord this is fake. a 1st for penner? no thanks.
Dagenais, I never saw a guy who loved himself so much.
LOL, good one
Barely. He was a healthy scratch most of the time and did nothing memorable when in the lineup.
How is twitter overrated? Just wondering
“I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” – Bilbo Baggins
But one of those jars of jam makes it harder for a goalie to move around his kitchen.
I haven’t seen enough of the Oilers to know whether or not it’s their design, but he does not camp out in front of the net nearly enough for a player his size.
His lack of speed makes him a terrible fit here too in my opinion.
Like Tyler Seguin, another 1st, a 2nd and a kidney for Kessel?
Penner is not work 2 first rounder ,what AK work then
I could care less about “jam”, as I think it is entirely overrated.
I just want a body that creates traffic on the PP. Penner’s got a body designed for screening the goalie.
Desharnais, Gionta, Gomez, Plekanec…these are all guys who screen the goalie about as much as Chara’s toenails do.
LMAO
How bout AK for Pierre Dagenais and Garth Murray?
tinnordi is the next big thing, why would you trade that? he’s only 18, when everyone knows how crucial Dmen can be…
that must have been an edmonton wet dream, like us hoping someone takes away gomez
He who doesn’t look twice risks looking foolish.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Oops, sorry adamkennelly — you posted the exact same thing. : )
That would have been brutal — two first rounders for a 30-goal guy with attitude problems?
Why would ESPN carry all LeBrun’s tweets if it is not him? Do you get anything right on here?
Kostitsyn and 1st rounder is acceptable!
Tinordi and a 1st rounder….NO WAY!
They trade up for the big D and Penner not work more than 1 for 1
Laff fans with their desires. They could have came up with something more original.
when the difference in the accounts’ name is an underscore, its sometimes hard to tell the difference if you are looking at it quickly
Desharnais has more jam than Penner Chris.
Pierre LeBrun is on Twitter. So is his stalker, evidently
Geez, Boone. That was more excitement in five minutes than TSN has provided in five years!
The guy I’m hoping for is Konopka. He’s an epic faceoff guy and would really add some grit to our bottom 6.
Gotta be fake, 1st round pick? I don’t think so…..
Phew.
OMG You scared me you bastards!
I thought PG was really that dumb (like many of you have suggested) to make that retarded trade!
Well, if it is Tinordi and their 1st round pick for Penner, I can live with that trade. I’ve never been all that sold on Tinordi’s skating, and the 1st round pick is going to be a crap shoot down in the last third of the first round (hopefully).
Penner is a big body that the team will have for another season after this year, so not a rental. And IF he goes to the front of the net, the PP could become a lot better. Haven’t seen enough of him to know if he likes to set up shop there, but Martin and Muller should just tie a 10 foot bungee between the opposing net and his rear end in practice to reinforce what the team wants from him.
But we’ll see if it really happens.
HOLY CRAPOLA
Puuulease not Tinordi!
Edit: Thank you God. You do exist.
That Penner trade price was pretty steep considering his point total this year. Hopefully it’s fake.
edit: fake twitter accounts…is this what the world’s come to.
Yup. He is somethin’else that’s for sure.

XXIV…and counting
If this trade happens as reported, IMO it’s WORSE than idiotic.
Ali B.
Idiotic trade. PG is a moron!
Geez! I’ve been punked.
penner trade is not true. fake twitter accounts…
I’ll take him….Hab4life….
C’monnnnn Simmonds….. 20 minutes left..
If they felt they needed to add Penner to such a degree that they were willing to give away a 1st, Teubert and maybe a 2nd, there’s no way in hell they’re trading Simmonds.
Why give up so much to address what you feel is a need if you’re going to turn around and trade a better version of the player you just acquired?
Hopefully, if the price is lower, of course, lol. Edm really did well in that deal I think.
Now that LA has Penner, is Simmonds extendable to some point and could we possibly get him?
Most of the things you play with are the world’s smallest…. Old news everlasting.
We’re missing the point. We should have been selling AK into this market to get a first and prospect not cheering passing on Penner. We should have been selling non-core assets for the past 2 weeks. When we don’t win the Cup this year, don’t complain about Edmonton, Toronto, St. Louis and other teams who create the cap space and picked up the prospects, picks and young players to leap frog us.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
Penner to LA!! WaaaaaHoooooo! Thank God we didn’t get him! Can you believe how much the Kings had to give the Oilers just for Penner.
Man, as happy as I am that it wasn’t PG being bent over for Penner, I’m a little peeved at how much EDM got for him. If even half of their top picks and prospects work out they are set to become a very dangerous team in a few years. At least they’re in the west.
- Honestly yours
McGuire does it again!
It was probably Steve Tambellini.
Not to mention the timing..
Remarkably similar. Too close to be a guess.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
The person behind the twitter account with the fake Penner to Habs trade may actually have some insider news.
He probably heard a top D prospect + 1st rounder for Penner, and guessed its Habs.
It was Pierre who said it. Gainey/Gauthier stole his job from him.
TSN is running out of ideas…their crack about suing PG for malpractice if he is on the team charter this morning has been used before verbatim…I also hope PG does not do a trade for the sake of doing a trade…Some people may not like it, but if this team as is is what is in the playoffs, I do not mind as long as they work hard…it will never be easy but hard work makes it feel easy and can bring success.
Besides, I am not a professional GM or hockey guy like everyone else here…whatever happens happens because there was a professional hockey reason why it did.
“I am guilty of using elipses…”
THE OILERS ROBBED THE KINGS IN THAT DEAL………………BIG TIME OVER PAYMENT FOR PENNER!
When Gainey blew up the team in July 2009 he had a chance to go down in history as the man who turned the franchise around. Instead of rebuilding the acknowledged way with youth and draft picks he jumped off a cliff with high priced UFA’s. Whether it was Uncle George who wanted an immediate playoff team or Gainey wanting to save his career is moot at this point.
Now that Geoff Molson has echoed the same sentiments of requiring playoff success now, instead of long term Cup goals. I am even more doubtful of ever seeing a Stanley Cup parade in Montreal. Ultimate success comes from the top and that means the owner. I foolishly thought Molson allowed PG to become GM out of deference to the established management team, as Molson was a newbie. I think now that Molson actually approved of the direction and goals of the old guard. Sad.
Like I said earlier. The Habs are an expansion team without the benefit of a few high draft picks. What else was the purge. We are starting from scratch. A Cup is years away. Like 5-6 years away. At best. Maybe 10-15 years away.
You gotta admit, folks, that was a good one
Nahhhh Price for Penner and 2 1st round picks would have been better.
It’s shocking how many of you fell for it.
whats with some people bent on trading AK, you will likely get an inferior player,
look at AK cammy and gionta, all similar stats, ak is the least paid, AND THE ONLY one that actually finishes his body checks (he’s pretty much the only forward that does that on the whole team…)
TSN must have money to burn ,a dozen guys on there all day wasting time .they could have accomplished just as much with the two guys that actually know what they are talking about MCKENZIE AND DREGGER.
Im sure they aren’t getting paid by the hour.. and there are plenty of people watching. I think it’s funny that Sportsnet has all day coverage too.. is anyone watching that?
McGuire? Eklund?
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
All we need is someone to drop the F-bomb to make it interesting.
Incredibly, this has been more boring than the Oscars.
to fre up 2.9 million next year…..allen was signed through next year..samsonov is a ufa
Why on earth did Dale Tallon get Sergei Samsonov?
Bob McKenzie: “… the Dustin Penner deal is not done… the Montreal Canadiens are in there pitching… Toronto Maple Leafs do not have major interest…”
thanks
Desharnais for Arnott and a pick. I dont know if thats possible with cap stuff, just shooting the breeze.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

“Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice – to win, or to be French-Canadian?” — Ken Dryden
Listen people. Nothing the Habs could do this trade deadline would put them over the top to be a contender. There is no trade that will clinch it. The Habs will have to live or die with what they have. Any trade at this stage that isn’t acquiring a pick or a prospect, and I mean a future NHLer, would be a step backwards.
Now since the Habs don’t tank, those miserable middle of the packers, their only hope is for a slow rebuild. That means years without a Cup. Think Detroit in the 80′s. That’s where the Habs are, minus a Steve Yzerman pick, which means it’ll take even longer for us to get out of the wilderness.
The Habs need to acquire 1st round picks not shed them.
If this team wants to be serious about being a contender they better get serious about drafting properly. They better acquire picks and start stocking the team with actual super-stars.
Yes they have managed to get Markov, Plekanecs, Halak and Subban from the back of pack but it’s not enough. The team needs a real bonafide 40-50 goal scorer. They have to start thinking about getting 1st round picks.
For all his blow-hardness, Burke’s manoeuvre to get both Sedins is the type of aggressive moving the Habs need to do.
It’s clear that the Habs just give the fans all the nice little platitudes to placate us but until I see this team start stacking picks and slowly developing its players I am convinced there will not be a Cup win in this city for quite a while.
PG doesn’t make big moves. We may never know, but I really hope he was looking to get picks and prospects for the players that won’t win us a Cup this year or next. Ridiculous parity this year made it a seller’s market and we didn’t participate on that side of the trade market. A huge wasted opportunity to clear space and set up for the offseason.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
Well put.
2 (at least) problems. 1st rounders are hard to come by from mid-pack. We’ve had better luck with later rounds and excellent scouting (Halak, Markov, etc.). Except we’ve apparently cut our Euro scouting massively (maybe Serious will review this again).
3rdly, we’re nearly capped out because you you know who.
If we don’t scout industriously, how the hell do we draft well in later rounds and find that diamond that’s been overlooked?
To me the lack of commitment to scouting is a lack of commitment to winning, which means all the other little lateral moves are bullsh*t.
We may win one round this year riding Price, if it’s Boston or Pittsburgh without Crosby, but more?
Free beer at the Bell is more likely.
Upshall is a UFA at the end of the year, he’s the type of gritty guy we need. He also has 16 goals this season, not bad.
More info please
I’m on Jay Onraits Blog Bob reported that Penner deal between Habs is being pitched by Gauthier as we speak
I would be happy with Penner as I’ve seen him live and liked him, I’m not claiming he’s Ovechkin, nor am I claiming expert knowledge about him, but what I would like to consider is not so much Penner himself, but what he would represent – an adjustment in direction away from soft peripheral players and a statement from Gauthier about where we are going.
Wiz, Penner, that’s a great direction (I’m not counting Mara/Sopel so much as they are plugging injury holes and I don’t think it’s entirely fair to evaluate them as “strategic” moves, though I hope Sopel takes).
And if we do get bigger and tougher, then we can afford the luxury of a DD because we can clear space for him to work.
That’s all. But I don’t want a treading water deal. As the doctors say “first, do no harm”.
shh……………………………hear that?………………………………….world’s smallest violin hehe

“We don’t see things as they are, but as we are.” – Anais Nin
Winchester to the Ducks….for a 3rd round pick…. Wanted him with the Habs
Is it me or is this year’s trade deadline even worse than last year’s for mind numbing boredom?
“Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice – to win, or to be French-Canadian?” — Ken Dryden
A depth centreman might be what PG will get, now that Halpern is on the wing, itd mean Desharnais goes.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Even with Halpern on the wing, we have Eller, DD, Gomez, Pleks.
Halpern on the wing would be the depth, as for me, if a trade is to be done, I’m still hoping for a winger..
McGuire’s Metamucil just kicked in
Well… the assumption was the HIO verifies its sources before posting. Apparently not so.
Or out McGuire’s @ss
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Off to shovel the snow for exercise. Too late now to go to gym. If PG makes trade send smoke signal up chimney.
PENNER TO KINGS. LOVE IT.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Half an hour till I have my life back..thank god
I just interviewed Sam Roberts. He feels that that considering the injury situation, the Habs should stand pat.
Tom Pyatt is not on twitter, it’s a fake account. Only members of the organization on Twitter are Mike Cammalleri and Brent Sopel.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Tom Pyatt doesn’t have a twitter account. Nice try.
tom pyatts twitter just posted that he was dealt in a package to edm for penner
Hey! I just heard that we did Penner for Tinor….
…
…oh.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
Habs hired Christer Rockstrom to head up European scouting, he’s had 20 years of experience with the NYR and did 5 years with the Red Wings before that. He’s found some guys for NY like Anisomov and RIP, the potentially great Alexei Cherepanov. It’s going to take years to see how the scouting department shake-up has changed things, potentially at least half a decade to really measure results.
Montreal’s key to moving forward is doing what Philly has done for over 15 years, flip their 1st-rounders into NHL players. If they can start converting their first-round picks consistently, that’s the difference to take them forward, pick up the Top-6 talent where their rivals are getting it.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Is it too early to rank winners and losers for the trade deadline (past two weeks)…
Dallas is the BIG loser today. Richards for the rest of the season and then pfftt. Nothing. Add to that the head scratcher move for Gogo and you have to wonder how long Niewendyk is going to be the GM… Kings paid an awful lot for a player that probably doesn’t win them an extra round (I think they would have won one round either way). Their fans will hate this trade in 2 weeks and regret it in 2 years… Toronto (this one hurts) gets two firsts, two prospects and other picks and moves closer to the playoffs… Boston is a marginal loser (IMO) for way overpaying for Kaberle. For all their moves, I think they’re still behind Philadelphia as the Eastern rep for the Cup… For Habs fans, nice not mortgaging the future, but I would have liked to see PG sell something into a hot market… Edmonton is a big winner clearing cap space and getting more prospects and picks for Penner. Florida is a modest loser for not shedding some of their other players, Vokoun in particular. What’s the point of keeping him with a core rebuild underway?… God bless them for getting a third for Higgins… PG are you listening to this???… Sad days in St. Louis as a team with aspirations becomes throws in the towel, but has the guts to add great young players in Shattenkirk and Stewart… Calgary fans are going to be paying for their unlikely rebound for a couple of years for not dismantling this team. If Penner nets a bounty, Iggy would have been worth a Gretzky-esque return… Washington made several small moves to improve themselves into the playoffs. Wideman and Arnott are big bodies that can help in a lot of different ways. Ultimately, they need Ovie and their stars to star again… Devil fans, see the issues surrounding the Calgary folks… Colorado should have moved some older players to kick start the rebuild, but give them props for pulling off a huge trade with the Blues… I’ve said for a while that Ottawa needed to gut to the bone. Their cupboards are bare and Phillips, Alfredsson and others will play out their careers on a dud team… Vancouver, Higgins and Laps. Really? Really!?! That’s their answer to playoff players… Anaheim is a playoff dark horse if Hiller is healthy and gets hot… Detroit, with respect to my HIO friend (you know how you are) I’m not as sold on their goaltending as you are and their window is closing… Pittsburgh made a couple of discount moves to improve themselves, but sans Sid, they are not the even close to the same team… Rangers, clearly they doubt their chances so Sather will spend some money in the offseason… Nashville made a big splash early but their playoff push fizzled…
My predictions for the final four and the Cup: Philly and Washington in the east; Vancouver and Detroit out west. Vancouver over Philly in 5 for the Cup.
Whose leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini around here?
Great summary. Well worth the read.
Meh…
XXIV…and counting
Habs acquire Drew McIntyre from Atlanta for Festerling…. who?
See below.. it’s never been made official.
I hope the earlier report was wrong and PG gets him.
What? When?
Never been confirmed.
“When I was a baby I wish my first word had been “QUOTE”, then right before I die I could say “UNQUOTE” – Stephen Wright
habs get goalie Drew MacIntyre from atlanta for Brett Festerling
Glad we didnt do anything! We are not in a position to be buyers or sellers…..stuck in the middle still. But now time to let the kids continue to gain experience, do a round or 2 in the playoffs, move a couple of vets in the off season for picks and rebuild the now empty cupboard in Hamilton. We need to get bigger and let the kids develop. Our next window of opportunity is 2-3 years so that should remain the focus.
such sweet rationalization
Well, at least I called Arnott to WSH. Feels good to get one right.
i haven’t been impressed with tinordi.
i would prolly do penner for tinordi but tinordi and a 1st is pushing it.
AK46 and a 1st is even pushing it. hopefully AK46 is going back the other way if we get penner
And the TSN crew waits on baited breath for Lord Brian “I can’t tie my own tie” Burke to speak to the great unwashed!
From a phony twitter account.
Tinordi for Penner
It was from a fake account guys…calm down!
And if that was an actual deal, I’d jump off this bandwagon, basically 2 first round picks? Not worth it…
That would be such a sweet deal…deadline dreaming can be fun I suppose
Weber + Kristo + AK + 1st for Hemsky and Penner
lol.
Right. No danger of Kristo getting frostbite in Edmonton. It’s warm there all year.
EDM is asking LA for Simmonds, Teubert, and a 1st just for Hemsky, so I doubt they even accept what you proposed for Hemsky alone, let alone with Penner.
You are not kidding Pierre has said on TEAM990 that he send email advice to Boivin about players. Freakin hilarious when I heard it.
He said when Boivin was hired as Pres he knew nothing about hockey and called McGuire in to inform him. McGuire said he explained and answered whatever questions Boivin asked him and said thanks and never offered him a job. Gauthier went to school with Boivin, who do you think brought him in at the time Gainey was hired by the new owner Gillett? That is why McGwire is always knocking the Habs management team, he wanted to have the GM job here.
You’re right, thank god for that!
He doesn’t like Gauthier. It has nothing to do with the team. Gauthier fired McGuire when he took over as GM in Ottawa.
Now the TSN guys are just making up deals… no better than the people on the site.
Boucher looks like he’s going to be a coach of the year candidate. Jacques Martin, not so much.
I would gather Vigneault and Laviolette are the other two candidates.
Disgust, er, I mean discuss!!!
the deadline isn’t what it used to be.
If you say so. I don’t see the value in keeping anyone who won’t be here next year. This is *not* a cup year
Nah, we need them. The only team I don’t think we stand a chance against is Philly, we could do some damage in the playoffs – in the East at least. Might as well keep those veterans, and potentially add.
Just too bad we had some many injuries….
Haha Ferraro is hating on Lapierre like there’s no tomorrow.
I don’t know, I’d like to see Moen and Halpern moved for picks.
Arnott would be nice. Penner, but how much would he cost?
Really though, Gauthier is right with not giving up too much for a rental. I wouldn’t be disappointed if we standed pat.
This is Wolf Blitzer reporting from the Situation Room where we are following a breaking news story…
This just in… Still no trade for the Montreal Canadiens as the NHL trade deadline approaches.
CNN will keep you posted on this and other developing stories as they develop...
Wait. I’m hearing something in my earpiece…This just in…Penner! Hold on these are unconfirmed reports…
A reliable source has now confirmed the initial report is indeed false.
We’ll be back after these messages…
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Hmmmm Higgins AND Lapierre to the Canucks. Habs rejects west?
• McGuire is working his Berry. News?
Grocery list from his wife…
yaaawwwnnnn…..
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
But a couple of deals SO FAR today till noon. 2 moves by Atlanta in time for tomorrow’s Habs game.
That’s a bit harsh, isn’t it? He’s just a kid after all.
***Subbang!!!***
You’re embarrassing triple, now you are taking shots at Geoff Molson. Just shows you are a controversial, underachiever with bargain-basement hockey IQ. And it makes you look like the pompus, insufferable schmuck most of us on here see you as. Grow up.
thanks but i’ll keep plekanec
Brayden Schenn is not going anywhere, he is their prize puppy.
NOOOOOOO
Plex and first for B. Schenn?
Any takers?
Never
Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
***Subbang!!!***
i would do AK for penner
AK and a 1st=Never
AK and Gomez for Penner I would do
Edmonton would be getting a match set of coasters.
Tick….
Tock….
Tick…
Tock…
Tick…
Tock…
Tickittytockittytickittytockittytickittytockitty.Ahhhhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnn.
Times up.
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Eklund’s e ratings explained:
e1: Some shit I made up.
e2: Some shit I made up.
e3: Some shit I made up.
e4: Some shit I made up.
e5: Something I read on tsn.ca.
I think I may have decoded Eklund’s “E” factor. I believe they are measures of Eternities between his correct predictions.
I am just upset that the Habs couldn’t have unloaded AK for the same.
Some of these deals are insane, such as the one just completed for Penner.
Habs are better off waiting until the summer when the market place is a bit more sane.
Ramo for Tavare
KHL Update 2:
G Karri Ramo makes 32 stops for a 3-1 win for Avangard Omsk, they’ve tied their playoff series 2-2.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Good points. Maybe he dried to drop Ak, Gio, Cammi, Hammer for picks and it just wasn’t there. I’d feel better if we knew what he was really trying to do, but reading Gauthier is like reading the East German 5 year plan for the economy.
If I ever meet Penner down here I will ask him if Montreal was ever in the loop. Given his gf situation LA may have been what he wanted.
Better beaches than Edmonton.
You Arnott wrong about that
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Both Penner and Neal are 21-18-39.
There are only 4 trades so far, it is not like PG is idling while other GMs are getting things done.
I don’t understand why so many people want Penner. If we want a power forward, players like Neal would be great, not Penner. We are better off with AK than with Penner.
As for Arnott, he is 36… unless we think we have a shot at the cup, I don’t think we should trade any significant assets for him.
Arnott would be terrible.
he dislikes the management team correctly BUT in his case because they didnt hire him instead of gainey/gauthier.
If McGuire is dissing Penner then Habs dealt for him. and Pierre is getting his normal anti-habs shot in.
Is anyone else having trouble with their browser? The refresh button or F5 doesn’t bring up any new trades. I even closed the browser and restarted it. Same problem with I.E. or Firefox.
klesla for upshall/lepisto …i like that trade for both teams…
Brutal — AK scores more and earns less.
If Eklund has himself as the source than we can forget it, but if someone else has it has a source, than it may have legs.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
Eklund says Dumont for Kostitsyn. Probably not true but if yes hang Gauthier. I’d rather see no moves than desperate stupid ones.
Eklund? Guess that means the deal is definitely never happening.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I have the ’06 Oilers reference count at 5
It looks like MacT has been adding a little whiskey to his coffe cup. That last bit was embarrassing
So far TSN says that there is a total of 4 trades, 10 players and 2 picks involved.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
Toronto and Ottawa, boy does TSN love loser teams.
Well my money’s on Panger.
Thought I’d check in to the TSN Trade Tracker….what a joke. Over-sold and under-delivered. Duthie must really hate this annual farce although I bet McGuire is loving his air time!! How much time have they used to plug their new TSN Radio station??
Weeks ago I said I’d be fine if Gauthier did nothing but stand pat. Maybe if Markov was still in the picture this season, with Wisniewski, the Habs could have tried to squeeze one more player in at the deadline to bolster their chances.
Without Markov, unless Price pulls a Halak, we’re still a long shot against Philadelphia, Boston or the Pens, if Crosby returns. So standing pat today, figuring out whom on the defence is staying and who’s going over the summer and picking up a UFA at that time isn’t a bad idea.
I’m cool with sending Kostitsyn and a 1st rounder to Edmonton for Penner or Hemsky but even that doesn’t necessarily put us up there with the elite.
The slow and steady approach by Gauthier and Gainey has taken us from a brutal team to a playoff team and there’s no harm in continuing along that path. Stay the course and I think in 1-2 years we’ll be up there with the elite teams in the NHL. Especially with Price in nets!
AK fo Penner would be a mistake. AK and a 1st would be a crime.
