Sundin

Cliff Fletcher has told TSN that the Leafs have given Bob Gainey permission to talk to Mats Sundin.

Martin Lemay, who’s at the draft for CKAC, says he’s heard the Canadiens have dealt their first-round pick.

Was it traded to Toronto merely for the privilege of talking to Sundin?

Doubtful.

Pierre McGuire told Mitch Melnick much depends on whether Sundin wants to play any more, or whether he’s content to come off a really good season and retire as a Leaf.

McGuire says Bon Gainey spent most of the day with George Gillett, not with the scouting staff. So something is definitely up.

Sundin?

Steve Simmons reports, in the Toronto Sun, that a deal was in place:

Mats Sundin, a Montreal Canadien?

Had Bob Gainey and Cliff Fletcher had their way at the trade deadline, Sundin
would now be a member, healthy or not, of Les Glorieux.

The deal was in Sundin’s hands: All he had to do was give his blessing to
being dealt, which he did not.

The agreed-to trade would have sent speedy winger Christopher Higgins to the
Leafs, along with Montreal’s first, second and third-round draft picks, in
exchange for the captain.

It was the second of two deals Fletcher had all but completed that got nixed
by no-trade arrangements in players’ contracts.

How do ya like them apples?
