Subban skates with Team Canada in Sweden

P.K. Subban skated with Team Canada Wednesday in Stockholm as the squad prepared for Thursday’s quarterfinal game against Sweden at the World Hockey Championship (2 p.m., TSN, RDS).

Subban, a finalist for this year’s Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenceman, was paired with Jay Harrison of the Carolina Hurricanes.

It will be interesting to watch Subban on the bigger international-size rink in Sweden. Subban played junior hockey with the OHL’s Belleville Bulls, who play their home games on an international-size rink at Belleville’s Yardmen Arena.

“I’m quite familiar in terms of how to take the rush and how to use the size of the ice to your advantage, but at the same token, I haven’t played on that rink in four or five years,” Subban told Donna Spencer of The Canadian Press Wednesday in Sweden.

“This is my first game of the tournament. It’s been four days since I played a game and it’s a little bit different coming from a playoff game thinking you’re not even going to play hockey until next September to all of a sudden being in quarter-final game, Canada versus Sweden. That alone is a challenge.”

Canada beat Sweden 3-0 in the preliminary round of the tournament, but the Swedes have since added three Vancouver Canucks players to the lineup: forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin, along with defenceman Alex Edler.

Four other Canadiens players will be taking part in Thursday’s quarterfinals: Tomas Plekanec (Czech Republic), Raphael Diaz (Switzerland), Alex Galchenyuk (United States) and prospect Danny Kristo (United States).

Here’s the schedule for Thursday’s quarterfinal games, which will all be televised on TSN and RDS:

Russia vs. United States, 5:45 a.m.
Switzerland vs. Czech Republic, 8:30 a.m.
Finland vs. Slovakia, 11:15 a.m.
Canada vs. Sweden, 2 p.m.

Subban’s interview at the finnish tv. He’s disappointed but seemed to have time to speak. Said Stockholm is a nice city and feels bad to go home. Doesn’t know anything about the Staal’s situation.

He’s gotta be a future Captain.

The endless river of tears keeps on flowing on TSN about Leaf’s game-seven epic collapse against the Bruins.

Someone hand me a Kleenex please…

Tell me about it. All you hear from these guys is Leafs this and Leafs that. They have some nice pieces going forward, talented young forwards, blah, blah. Ahm, Leaf fans, do you have a rookie of the year candidate, NO, how about a 23 year old Norris candidate, ahm, NO, and did the ship get righted to the tune of finishing 15’th to winning division, Ahm, NO. Leafs….whatever!

I don’t want to see Maurice tonight, I want to see The Rocket!

    God I hate hockey players.

  7. J.J. of Turku says:

That Pettersson’s slapshot at the shootout was something. Ouch. 🙁

  8. jols101 says:

Not having Stamkos shooting is almost akin to not using Gretzky in the shootout.

  9. Timo says:

On that note, big thanks to Matty for blogging. Great job.

  10. punkster says:

    Halak would have stopped that.

    ***SUBBANGIN’ NOW BABY!!!***

  11. jols101 says:

There goes my Galchenyuk vs PK dream final. Oh well, still hope Galchenyuk and Kristo win gold now.

    Disappointing for the Canadians again.

  12. Timo says:

Where were those dirty goals Stamkos promised? A freaking shinny game.

  13. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

No Stamkos in the shoot- out?! No wonder Ruff is out of work. Crazy!

What a BS way to decide a playoff game!

  16. Timo says:

Team Canada is freaking useless. Don’t know why these stiffs even bother going to the worlds.

  17. jols101 says:

    Man, that’s gotta hurt. Brutal.

ROBYN REGEHR is a free agent…he might be a good fit on the back end for a couple seasons.

He is playing well in LA this playoff

    • Loonie says:

Regehr makes Markov look like Pavel Bure in the speed department Kooch.

I like the train of thought but he could be a bad bad fit depending on the partner.

      • Kooch7800 says:

yeah, he isn’t the fastest that is for sure but I have been impressed with him clearing the crease so far in the LA series.

Something we are not so great at LOL
