Subban scratch wasn’t punishment: Martin

AUDIO: Jacques Martin | P.K Subban | Subban again | Yannick Weber

Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin said today he wasn’t punishing defenceman P.K. Subban by making him a healthy scratch against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

The scratch, Martin said, was part of the maturation process for a rookie defenceman. And with seven healthy defencemen, he added, there are roster decisions to be made.

Martin wouldn’t commit to returning Subban to the roster for Saturday’s matinee at the Bell Centre against the San Jose Sharks.

EARLIER: It was advertised, upon arrival, as an optional practice for the Canadiens in Brossard. But it seems that only four players haven’t laced up: Tomas Plekanec, Scott Gomez, Michael Cammalleri and Josh Gorges.

The San Jose Sharks, who flew in last night from Ottawa (!) after their pounding of the Senators, are expected to skate their full team at noon.

Updates to come. Stay tuned to Twitter for live coverage, as it were.

Did you ever watch Martin’s Senators play? If you did you’d know that:

The Habs have an interesting team – BECAUSE of Martin.

Did you forget to mention how many pp goals??

  4. GrimJim says:

From what I’ve seen and read about Muller, I highly doubt he would ask to go mid-season, anyway.

What would you be if you were attached to another object by an incline-plan wrapped helically around an axis?

  5. GrimJim says:

In the off-season I would totally agree with you, but in the middle of a season is a completely different story. Once the season starts, the needs of the greater good apply. I’m not sacrificing the smooth operation of the team and the well-being of the 23 players and 2 other coaches that he has built a successful working relationship with. If Jersey or Toronto want him so badly, they can hire an interim coach and get him in the off-season. But right now, if I were Gauthier or Boivin or Molson, not on my watch. The team comes first from Oct 1 to the end of the playoffs.

  15. Jordio-oh says:

Or if Pronger and O’Donnell  ever get paired together (which is never by my estimation)

Surprising stat (at least to me): Hal Gill is only a year younger than Hammer and Spacek. Out of the top 20 oldest D-men in the league, we have 3. Detroit and Philly also share that distinction with us.

  16. HabFanSince72 says:

It’s interesting that Bob Gainey, who knew the players,  knows hockey and what it takes to win, and rebuilt the team last year specifically emphasizing team-work and character, had decided to make an offer to Kovalev and not to Koivu.

Someone might think there was a hint there as to who was the locker room problem.

  17. HabFanSince72 says:

It’s not a question of stupidity but of simple decency. If Muller has a chance at a head coaching job in the NHL it would be pretty mean to refuse it to him.

  18. HabFanSince72 says:

    I’m starting to think you’re a troll G-Man.

(And that’s not meant as insult. The  other explanation is that you haven’t got a clue about hockey.)

  19. GrimJim says:

I don’t think you have to worry about losing Muller any time soon. Any team interested in hiring Muller would have to ask permission to speak to him since he is under contract, and losing an assistant coach in the middle of a season is roughly equivalent to dropping a nuclear bomb on the dressing room, IMO. Even if Habs management is as phenominally stupid as guys like TripleXXX or Tony242 think they are, I still don’t think they are STUPID enough to allow that to happen. Letting Tampa recruit Boucher in the off-season was one thing, but but disrupting the coaching staff and entire team in the middle of the season to let a rival recruit your Asst Coach would be majorly, majorly incompetent.

  20. Jordio-oh says:

what are you even talking about?

i forgot that teams can be tied for 3rd in the conference (and tied for 3rd in the league, pending games in hand) without any chemistry.

And don’t be so quick to synonimize lack of production with floating. Gomez’s shortcomings in offence have little to do with him not moving his feet. Thats the difference between him and Kovalev.

  21. SeriousFan09 says:

Tired of hearing about Kovalev, he underused his own talent so much it’s insulting to the people who paid to watch him play in 60% of his career games.

I see Pavel Datsyuk play and I think “that’s who Kovalev could have been”. Incredibly talented and he uses it.

  22. andrewberkshire says:

Goals in two straight for #11.

  23. Ian Cobb says:

    Not a chance!!!

  24. joeybarrie says:

Are you including his assist last night in your very little offense? Or is it simply the 5 goals and 4 assists he has in 15 AHL games? Maybe the second highest shooting percentage on the Bulldogs, or possibly the TEAM high 6 shots on net last night…

As for size, I guess the WHOLE ONE INCH and 11 POUNDS PK has on him is all the difference.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  25. LA Loyalist says:

Sorry Ian when was the last time we won 2 games in a row? If we had “chemistry” the players would feel committed to each other and not disappear for entire periods or games.

I’d take a shot at kovalev. Another playoff team will.
That level of skill is not easily available and as to floating, well no one competes with 11 in the floating department.

  26. db says:

    would create more

  27. SeriousFan09 says:

Weber has more goals than any defencemen in the AHL even since he was called up and has 31 career goals in the AHL with 2 1/4 seasons played. No offence… right.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  28. Ian Cobb says:

Ya right, to bring back that floater would destroy all the chemistry that has been built since we dumped him.

  29. Kooch7800 says:

6 shots that hit the net in one game from one D man, and an assist is pretty bloody good.

Most of our D can’t hit the side of a barn.

he also is not a defensive liability.

So I guess if that is how you define players (size and physicality) I guess you don’t like any of our forwards.

  30. savethepuck says:

Been thinking and hoping since early this season that Ottawa has a bad year ( and Kovy too ) so he’ll be available at the trade deadline but definitely not now.  Ottawa has no reason to dump him now.  If they are outside looking in at a slim chance of making the playoffs at the deadline, we can get him cheap and he will definitely play better hockey in Montreal, where he wants to be, than in Ottawa.

  31. G-Man says:

Too small with no physical play. Very little offense. Let another team grab the smurf.

  32. Kooch7800 says:

Why is everyone ragging on Webber so much?  When he was on FORWARD he was getting no minutes and was invisible cause he is plays D.

Webber looked pretty decent last night from what I saw. He was getting pucks onto the net instead of missing it by 5 feet and was making smart passes.

He is ready for the NHL.  He may not work out in Montreal but he can play in the NHL, I have no doubt there.

  33. RJB says:

The HIO crew on 990 laughing at the thought of firing Martin, the fact people want Martin gone just boggles my mind. He is fantastic!

Great radio, thanks for letting some of us know, Julie.

  35. SeriousFan09 says:

More concerned that NJD will sack Maclean and hire Kirk. Why would Kirk go to such a pathetic basement squad that doesn’t even get to select at the top of the draft this year? Kirk at least has a bit to work with in NJ, as much as we mock it.

Nice, I’d change it slightly to a goal, a hasselhoff and a fight with a guy under 6′ (who probably wins)

Does anyone else worry that when the Leafs fire Ron Wilson they’ll come looking for Kirk Muller?

  42. Kooch7800 says:

I thought about that this morning to be honest.  But I don’t think Ottawa would get rid of one of their best offensive threats for nothing when they are having trouble putting the puck in the net.

Ottawa fans would be even more angry

  43. VancouverHab says:

H-I/O commentors agonising about Subban-Weber-Picard, about Hamr-Spatch age/speed, about Gomez’s play, etc. — without looking, apparently, at the standings.

What do you think the Leafs fans are agonising about? — Think how much they would love to to have our “agony.”

  45. avatar_58 says:

I noticed several times the last few games Cammy has playe centre. He grabs the puck and tries to cross the blue line, without even looking for Gomez. It’s like he’s downright frustrated that he has to play on the same line. Wouldn’t surprise me, as I watched Gomez launch RIGHT into 3 attackers…..perhaps thinking he could fly over them or something.

  46. Lancer says:

    I got an idea.

let’s go get Kovalev.probably get him for his salary rest of the year and maybe throw in some pucks for Murray.

Put him with pleky and ak46–stick cammy and gionta with gomez; got to bring up Gomez’ play.

It should give us 2 really good lines then we put eller with pouliot and darche/laps.

Was thinking about the same thing last night when Pouliot made that goal. Nice shot from the left. Cammy on the right with his genuflecting rocket shot and Eller’s energy in the middle. Only downside to me would be breaking up the PHD line. Maybe try Mad Max with Halpern and Darche. He’s been pretty energetic lately.

  53. avatar_58 says:

I like Gomez, but it bothers me that if we had our exact same team MINUS Gomez – we could see Eller getting top 6 minutes and maybe someone like Pacioretty up.

Bleh….I hope his point streak continues because otherwise…

  54. RGM says:

I think that you’d have a tough time keeping Gorges out of the lineup. Period.

Dude, the guy got hit in the head with a frickin Mike Green slapshot and didn’t miss a game. The puck hasn’t been seen since.

    Go Habs Go!

  55. avatar_58 says:

Yeah. I really hope it’s just a small thing because if there’s two guys we can’t do without it’s Gill and Gorges – as ANYONE who saw last night’s 5-3 kill could see.

  56. Danno says:

That just might work. Worth a shot at least.
