Subban a healthy scratch

Canadiens rookie defenceman P.K. Subban will be a healthy scratch tonight vs. the New Jersey Devils. Yannick Weber will be back in the lineup.

Subban didn’t enjoy his best game last night, twice burned on goals by the Edmonton Oilers in the visitors’ 4-3 overtime win at the Bell Centre.

But coach Jacques Martin’s decision to scratch Subban is bound to create a stir among fans of the team, who will point to underachieving players with more experience than the rearguard who haven’t been similarly left out of uniform this season.

uhm price wasn’t benched in favor of halak… halak played much better when he was in. With subban we’re benching one of our best players….

gil, spacek, hammerlik have all had off nights when have they been benched?

so bench him for the first period!!!

You mean play only 5 D?

I agree!  Not playing arguably our best Dman against a team the Habs have always had trouble against is truly a brain dead move.  It is unfair to the team, to Suban and to Weber.

What do we do if Weber lights it up?

PK needed a reality check and this is it. A night in the press box to watch and learn that this is a team game will do him good.

A single player at the NHL level cannot do it all. PK doesnt use the other players as much as he should. Watching a game from upstairs will give him another perspective ( one he probably isnt familiar with) on how to use his wingers.

Plus it will get him out of the fast lane mentality that he is in. He was out of control right from the opening bell last night and its his turn to sit.

so bench him for the first period!!! not the whole game!!! our team is better with him in the lineup.

There are all kinds of rookie mistakes. Sometimes its making the wrong choice, trying junior moves, being a fraction too slow in your decision-making. This is isn’t what is happening to Subban. He’s actually been poor for some time. His problem appears to be something like over-confidence. Is there any question that he is playing selfishly?

As far as his benching affecting him in the future, that seems unlikely. Price was benched in favour of Halak last year. Probably every great player in history has been benched at some point.

Maybe thinking you can do whatever you want and you’ll never be benched isn’t a good mindset.

    Also, I don’t think it’s necessarily a punishment.

In that case, we wouldn’t have a hockey team to ice.

    JM SUCKS!

I have no problem in theory with benching a player after a particularly bad game.  However it must be applied universally to ALL PLAYERS regardless of seniority or salary.  To do otherwise is unfair and can only foster discontent.  Cammi is already unhappy with his demotion to the second line with the dark hole named Gomez.  Do we need MORE dissatisfied key players?

Is there ANY player more deserving of a benching or demotion than Gomez?

I agree with benching him.  However it should also apply to others, even if they are veterns.

one game ..get the message across. subban wants to do it his ways at least thats the way it looked last night. he is still a rookie in my eyes. it makes our back end slower for tonight.

  12. Habhopeful says:

Its one game, he will be back the next game, Its to teach him a lesson, PK knows he could do better, and after being scratched he will be better, he isnt a player to begin sulking nor will he begin to be one, its for the better, PK’s confidence cannot be damaged!

It’ll hurt tonight, but JM wants PK to better and think about D for the next 10 or 20 games. This is a benching for long-term benefit, if JM was thinking of short-term results he’d play Subban for best possible result tonight.
