Still no contract for bulked-up Subban

As the countdown continues toward an NHL lockout on Sept. 15, the clock is also ticking on contract talks between the Canadiens and restricted free-agent defenceman P.K. Subban.

When Marc Bergevin was asked about the Subban situation during a press conference on Aug. 14, the Canadiens GM responded: “Out of respect for P.K. and his agent (Don Meehan), I don’t want to talk about it. It’s an ongoing process. We’ll get around to it.”

The question remains when?

“He’s a good young player,” Bergevin said on Aug. 14. “There’s a lot of things that come into play, (but) there’s potential there for sure.”

Meanwhile, reported on Aug. 27 that Subban has been busy working out and has bulked up to 220 pounds after playing last season with 206 pounds on his 6-foot frame.

“I eat a lot of protein – steak in the morning, steak in the afternoon, fish, chicken,” Subban told “At the start of the summer I order a whole cow from a grain-fed farm. I have it at my parents’ house and my mom will season (the butchered meat) and I’ll pick them up to have steaks for the week.”

It’s part of a new nutrition plan designed for Subban by his personal trainer, Clance Laylor, who has eliminated all grain, wheat and dairy products.
