Stats tell the story for Habs

With the Canadiens enjoying an off-day Wednesday after posting back-to-back victories over the Rangers Monday night in New York and the Dallas Stars Tuesday night at the Bell Centre, The Gazette’s Pat Hickey noted that the secret to the Habs’ success can be found in the statistics.

Hickey writes that the goaltending has been outstanding, but as Carey Price and Peter Budaj will tell you they get a lot of help from their teammates.

The Canadiens have been outshot by an average margin of 32-30 and rank 22nd in the National Hockey League in shots allowed. But the Canadiens are No. 1 in blocking shots, with 243 blocks this season, and three players are among the top 30 in that category. Josh Gorges has blocked 39 shots, second to the New York Islanders’ Andrew MacDonald, who has 42. Andrei Markov ranks ninth with 32 blocked shots and Raphael Diaz is 27th with 25.

“They make our job easier,” said Price, who noted the Canadiens have had more blocked shots than saves in each of their two wins this week.

Price and Budaj have a combined 1.77 goals-against average, which ranks fourth in the NHL.

With back-to-back road games slated for Friday in Minnesota (8 p.m., RDS, TSN Radio  690) and Saturday in Colorado (10 p.m., CBC, RDS, TSN Radio 690), Hickey reports that coach Michel Therrien will use both goaltenders. Look for Budaj to get the call in Colorado. He played six seasons there, from 2005 to 2011, and was the Avalanche’s No. 1 goalie for three of those seasons.

The Canadiens will practise at 10:30 Thursday morning in Brossard before hitting the road.

    Emelin, 4 years, $16.4M. That’s a lot.

Emelin 4 years $4.1 milion a year according to la Presse. That`s steep ! Not that he is not worth it although with his condition (metal plate in the face) he is at risk , even though that does not seem to stop him…

Somehow, somewhere we will have to make a choice and/or sacrifice. Markov will not come cheap and P.K. well…he deserves to be paid as our best player since he is !

So for now the kids on the team are helping us a lot to remain within the limit of the cap space but if not this season then pretty soon big changes are coming.

    • krob1000 says:

Gorges at 3.9 or Emelin for 4.1….Emelin please. Emelin can play the second wave of a pp and is a pretty complete dman. He is slightly above average in virtually all aspects. His only issue was adapting to the smaller surface and the different style but he has done so, he is now protected well also and should be able to throw his weight around and not have to answer as often.

With Emelin at 4.1, Subban maybe at 7.5 – 8, possibility of Markov re-signed at his usual 5.75 can we afford Gorges 3.9.

    • We can, but if we also want to improve at forward, it all hinges on Briere and Desharnais. As it is, with Briere on the books it’ll be tough to re-sign Gionta (or replace him with someone comparably skilled).

I’m not convinced Subban gets more than 7 million. RFA and UFA are very different. Doughty ($7mil) and Karlsson ($6.5mil) are the best comparisons.

Plus PK isn’t good enough to make the Olympic team. ;)

You guys are making a mountain out of a molehill, there is absolutely nothing going on between PK and Therrian. Except for the fact that Therrian wants to use PK’s min’s, for best results for the team.
It will change with each game because of the different style and play of the opposition.
No player’s body can play with top intensity for 30 min’s per game for 82 games and have something left for the play offs.

I think the coach is doing a masterful job at keeping our team above the middle of the pack, even with the large holes in the line up night after night, that would have surely sunk any other team.

We have one of the most efficient and skilled GM and coaching staff in this league, giving us, the fans, a great year so far of quality entertainment.
Just sit back and enjoy the growth and development as we get healthier and build the chemistry needed to go deep into the playoffs. We are definitely going in the correct long term direction.

My only concern is that is the word gets out and all of the sudden PK’s defesnvie paly is brought into question then it may affect his Sochi status…other than that I see no issue. Hopefully the folks at Hockey Canada all are smart enough to realize how useful PK is in all aspects of the game

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

It’s a reasonable concern, krob, but hopefully one that can be easily allayed over the course of the coming part of the schedule. Unless he’s nursing an injury — or somehow dealing with confidence issues??!! — PK’s play in November and December will make it impossible for Hockey Canada to leave him at home.

I hope I’m saying that with some degree of objectivity and not just pure Hab Fan zeal. But come on — the guy’s amazing.

      • Coach K says:

        Hi all,

I doubt that PK needs to worry about making Team Canada. Olympic-sized ice will expose any and all D who are not elite skaters – and there are many. Those whose game is predicated entirely on hitting/being physical should and will be culled. Team Canada will need the elite skating, pinpoint passing, vision and the deadly accurate shooting on the PP that PK can provide. He is the complete package! I know Erik Karlesson won’t be on Team Canada but many like to compare the two. IMO, PK brings everything that Karlesson does plus the physical element as well. If Karlesson is good enough for Team Sweden then PK is more than good enough for Team Canada. Just sayin’…

I think that this whole much ado about nothing story was actually fueled by another much ado about nothing story IAN.

The scene from 24 ch when Therrien talks to P.K. rather bluntly seemed to have shocked some people. As if those kind of scenes do not happen dozens of times in a season in every team`s locker room. Right then and there people think that Therrien does not appreciate P.K. when in fact the NHL is business big bu$ine$$.

  6. SuperHabFan says:

To all you who say desharnais is signed to a good 3.5 mil. Look at our D and who needs to be signed, plus Eller. SUCH a terrible contract. And now Eller can negotiate off that crap.

  7. krob1000 says:

IF there is one possible way that a real rift does develop re PK and the coach itw ould be becuase PK wants very badly to be in Sochi…and if the not playing him late with a lead or in PK siuations is a concern against regular NHL teams what will it be against super teams? He may be worried about that but that could never be spoken of.

Personally I saw him taking gambles that were unnecessary and he vas taken some bad penalties of late and Murray is good to keep traficc away, Diaz and Markov are both playing well and Gorges is the teams best shot blocker..no need for PK on the pk. Also though I really don’t think it is a bad thing for the teams best player to not be on the PK in a situation where he will be blocking shots left and right. He could also be hurt….But…if there is one concern re a rift…it would be re Sochi but again he could never come out and say that….but it could eat at a player fro the inside.

Maybe …just maybe this is all part of a sports thing,a conspiracy trying to keep PK away from Sochi. Maybe someone has infiltrated the Habs camp and are doing their best to sabotage the Team Canada team? lol

  20. Bill says:

Joshua, if Canada doesn’t take Subban to Sochi, they have rocks in their head. Reigning Norris trophy winner and to me the best all-around D in the league.

But there are always lots of politics involved when you are talking about Hockey Canada!

  21. Bill says:

Not a great time to be trading DD. His output has been just pathetic. Hold on to him and hope he goes on a hot streak at some point then pull the trigger if you can.

Getting Versteeg would be a lateral move though. He’s under contract until 2016 at more than million dollars higher cap hit than Desharnais, and he’s also sucking this year. Neither big nor gritty. Probably not a good trade.

As for Kopecky, he’s a total stiff. Never seen such a big guy with so few penalty minutes. Never scored more than 15 goals, pointless this season, and where does he fit in at RW on this team? Only one more year after this one on his contract though.

If you’re gonna trade Desharnais you should try to get something useful. There is no such thing as addition by subtraction. Depth at centre suffers without Desharnais.

    • John Q Public says:

Every day is great day to trade DD.

    • Wouldn’t be thrilled about Versteeg or Kopecky. If they’re looking to that region, and if Briere and his cap hit aren’t coming back, I’d rather Malone.

I know I’m banging this drum a lot, but Ott would fit our needs and is probably as available as every other Sabre. Also wouldn’t cost a ton, and he’s a UFA this summer. Can’t imagine they’d be interested in DD going the other way, though — they’d want a pick or prospect.

Devils coach Jacques Lemaire on the Daneyko-Kaminski feud – “Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. Dano has only two teeth left, so you can’t say that to Dano.”

      • Hstands4Hockey says:

Ott will not come cheap. He’s a guy every team in the league will want for a playoff run. If Douglas Murray can pull 2 2nd Rounders at the deadline, Ott could easily pull a first or high-level prospect (Montreal won’t pay that price).

    • Timo says:

While I don’t know florida roster all that much, I looked at it on TSN and I to am baffled at who Habs can possible look at. Trading DD makes sense if it’s a salary dump, but trading him for someone with even bigger cap hit and similar output is stupid.

So, it must be Scotty G come home then.

    • Hstands4Hockey says:

Trading DD for Versteeg (4.4 million/year) straight up would just trade one problem for another. Montreal would have to trade more than DD (i.e 3rd rounder territory) & Florida would have to retain salary (which they easily can) for this to make any sense.

Great, now MT can bitch out Karl Subban too. sounds like an outspoken school principal, but MT will make him a better person.

  23. joshua94k says:

TSN on their panel discussion on Team Canada’s hockey team this morning don’t have PK Subban on the team. They rank the following players higher:

Pietrangelo who lacks toughness with one hit, Doughty who is +1 and 7 pts, Weber -3 and 5pts, Keith -2 and 0 goals, 7 hits 16 blocks, Bouwmeester who lacks toughness with 4 hits 3 blocks.

They also would rank Boyle and Letang higher when they come back from injuries. Their knock against Subban is that he is a high risk player… Doughty, Weber and Keith can also be considered high risk with their low +-.

Subban leads the league in points. He is well rounded with +4, 10 hits 16 blocks. He has probably the best shot and can play a strong role in shutting down the opponent’s top line. In 2011, with Markov and Gorges injured. He played top minutes, faced the other team’s best forwards, played on the power-play and penalty kill and helped an injured line-up make the play-offs and lose in gm7 in overtime.

It is unfortunate that we have a coach who does not recognize the full potential of this Norris winner.

Currently, in ESPN Top 200 Rankings. (ESPN standard stats include goals, assists, power-play points, shots on goal, plus/minus, penalty minutes and average time on ice for skaters, and wins, goals-against average and save percentage for goalies.) PK Subban is ranked 10th, highest among defencemen.

“I want to kill somebody cutting across the blue line and I want to score the goal and celebrate. And I’ll do it by any means possible to win a hockey game. That’s how I feel playing there (the Bell Centre). I am not sure I have that feeling anywhere else.” – PK Subban

    • donmarco says:

I’m honestly of 2 minds on this. On the one hand I’d love to see him play for Canada and represent our country. But on the other hand can you imagine the chip on his shoulder he’ll carry if he doesn’t make it? Plus I’d love to see him get some rest for the push to the playoffs. Habs could have as many as 9 players playing in Sochi, and there could be a real letdown after the Olympics, plus there’s the fatigue factor and possibility of being injured. I love my country, but I may love the Habs just a tiny bit more.

  24. HabsStateOfMind says:

  30. Bill says:

Emelin will be first because he’s an easy re-sign: market value for that type of player is clearly established.

Markov will get done sometime over the second half.

Subban will be last but will be done before arbitration. I’m looking for it to be along term deal unless Bergevin turns out to be some kind of moron.

  31. shiram says:

2 rumours, one that’s already made the rounds, and one I think has not been posted.

-Rumours says Bergevin is talking with the Panthers about a trade. There were words about Bergeving being in Florida and Tallon (I think it’s him) being in MTL. The usual suspects are the trade targets, something around DD for either Kopecky or Versteeg.

The newer rumour is about re-signing our own Habs, and the deal that could be done quickest would be Emelin’s.
This sounds weird to me, re-signing a player while he is injured…
    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=435388

“Five of the Montreal Canadiens’ six top defencemen will be without a contract at the end of this season. So, what is Marc Bergevin’s game plan?

McKenzie: The high profile guys are obviously P.K. Subban, the one restricted free agent and then you’ve got Andrei Markov, Raphael Diaz, Francis Bouillon and Alexei Emelin. It might surprise some people that Emelin of that group – who’s not even in the line-up, he’s out with an ACL injury and probably won’t be back until Christmas or later – is the guy that’s probably first up and most likely to get a deal done in the next little while. Nothing’s done to this point, but the conversations are headed in that direction and it could get done fairly soon.”

Emelin is practicing in a no-contact jersey as of recently.

In his career he was the opposite of Subban in terms of his play so I think it’s natural that PK is not his type. I would not be surprised if push came to shove, Bergevin chose Therrien over PK. Of course, eventually, it would punch both of their ticket the f out of town, but by then it’d be too late.

You do that Burly and lemme know. Let me guess, he was a great teammate, a great leader on and off the ice, he gave 200% every night and he was a good friend who always stood up for his teammates? Did I get it right?

        • Just a Habs Fan says:

A comment about PK and if push came to shove don’t bet on PK getting the winning end of it. I have worked for large companies and I have seen first hand how an employee can get let go because of a personality rift with a manager who was either insecure or biased. I bet many on this site have seen this also. Sometimes in management they allow these things to happen due to the present success of the incumbent in the position……ie MT has a winning record. Personally it looks to me that MT may be biased towards PK but that is a superficial response on my part I realize because I don’t know either of these people. Now is that because of his color or personality…..anyones guess but there is soething there I think. Just can’t remember him MT ever saying any good things about him. PK has had some amazing games or at least moments so there have been opportunities for praise. A concern may be PK himself deciding not to want to stay in the end due to what he thinks of how he is handled. It bothers me to see alll this discussion on PK in this light anyhow. He certainly has adjusted I think to being more of a safe and reliable defenseman. He won’t have to worry about employment for sure.

He will not put you in trouble and his a decent player to fill holes here and there. That being said i think that Blunden is done in MTL and he will be sent back to Hamilton when the injured come back ead then traded in a package deal with someone else. He has had more than his share of chances and had he not measured 6 ft 4 he would have been gone a long time ago.

      • 2mins4lookinsooogood says:

Blunden is actually now a Hab for life … he is really a career AHL player who has been waived repeatedly without being claimed.

He will soldier on for years as the occasional short term, 6 minute a game 4th line call-up. Knows his role, performs adequately and then goes back to a higher priority in the AHL.

Think of him as an Alex Henry player

Therrien ripping on Subban between periods saying he knew he “wasn’t there” because a bad practice than Subban asks about a play during the game where Therrien wasn’t happy with his pass. MT’s reponse “MOVE YOUR FEET F**** PASS”….. encouraging

I guess PK did not get a “no yelling at” clause in his contract. No doubt the 1st Habs star to be yelled at by his coach. Different players respond to different motivation.

            Mr. Biter
            No Guts No Glory

          • To be fair, a few clips don’t tell the whole story. Coaches swear and yell sometimes — that’s normal. And if Therrien really did have some crazy vendetta against Subban, and was singling him out for abuse, you can bet the Habs wouldn’t allow the TV show to reflect that.

All I’m saying is let’s not jump to conclusions because of a context-free 30-second clip.

Devils coach Jacques Lemaire on the Daneyko-Kaminski feud – “Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. Dano has only two teeth left, so you can’t say that to Dano.”

Subban does have a tendency to hold on to the puck too long.

      • Habfan10912 says:

Hi 84. There are deficiencies in his game for sure but night in and night out he’s the best player on the ice, There needs to be a better way to lead men, especially the guy who provides the on ice spark the team needs often.

        • Luke says:

Like what? Rub his belly and tell him it’s alright?

Does PK seem to you to be the type motivated the passive “Let’s get out there and try better. OK Champ?” chat?

He’s a passionate fiery guy. He probably reacts better to a “What the Fleep are you doing? You are supposed to be a Norris winner and you pull that Junior BS?”

How do you think he handled Crosby? A gentle… “Everything you did was fine, but I think you could have been a little bit better” or the “Smarten up!”

MT probably handles each player differently because each player is different. You don’t become an NHL coach without knowing which buttons to push.
You also don’t become an NHL player by being an emotional wreck who gets sad whenever your coach tries to correct your behaviour.

The interesting thing: Some may not like the way the message is delivered. BUT is the message wrong?

        • habs-fan-84 says:

Announcer: We’ve just got hold of hockey insider Raymond Raquello at Madison Square Gardens to get his thoughts on what’s about to take place at the Bell Centre. Raymond, what are you hearing?
Raquello: It’s definitely something big. As you can see on your television screen, the Bell Centre is now completely surrounded by fans and the downtown area is filling fast. One of the things I keep hearing from my sources around the league is that it might have to do with the Canadiens playing the Colorado Avalanche this weekend. Patrick Roy, their coach, you’ll recall, used to play for Montreal until that memorable night when he stormed off the ice after a humiliating loss and vowed never to play for the Canadiens. He didn’t. He got himself traded to Colorado, where he ended up winning two more Cups before retiring. And now he’s back as bench boss and has the Avalanche playing lights out.
Announcer: Thanks, Raymond. Let’s head now to the Bell Centre where reporter Carl Phillips is waiting for the press conference to begin, Carl, what’s happening?
Phillips: General manager Marc Bergevin and coach Michel Therrien just took their seats at the long table in front of a mass of reporters, the most I’ve ever seen. There’s a hush in the room as Bergevin begins to speak. Wait a minute, he’s talking in French. I’ll do my best to translate. He’s saying The Montreal Canadiens … have reached … a deal with … Toronto … to obtain Nadzim Kadri! … in exchange for … PK SUBBAN!!! PK SUBBAN!!!!
It’s bedlam in here, the whole room is going wild. It’s the most terrifying thing I’ve ever witnessed. Everyone’s in shock. Good grief, it’s not over, Bergevin is yelling he hasn’t finished. There’s more! He’s waiting for the hubbub to die down. Okay, it’s quieter now, he’s about to speak. In French again, gimme a break! He’s saying the Canadiens … are also sending … to the Leafs … Desharnais!!! …. for a … sixth-round pick.
    Subban AND Desharnais!
Oh no, the fans have broken through the doors, they’re smashing everything in sight. Now they’re heading for Bergevin. They’re tearing apart Therrien to get at him. Omigawd, they’re, they’re
[Shrieks fill the air, and then ... dead silence]

bad enough but what bugs me even more was how pricey the stuff was in Montreal. The Summit was great but $12 for a pretzel at the game!? It wasn’t even fresh. The bag was already open.

    hello boys & girls…

I just watched some of these 24CH episode (flash)…Prust seems to be the guy who everybody loves to have around…

Besides his abilities on the ice the Canadiens found another positive leadership in the locker room…a good person with a lot of character…always with the kids…for only 2.5 millions per year!!!…

he is trully one of the best (free agents) acquisitions in a while…

    CHeers to that!

    • Habfan10912 says:

Morning my South American friend. The Rangers are still trying to find the replacement for Prust. He’s one of those “worth every Penney” players.

      • JUST ME says:

Right on Habfab10912. Ever since they let go Prust and Dubinsky the Rangers became an average team. Give me some Gaborik,Richards and Nash at high price please !

Prust is a key component in the Habs succes and is worth much more than you can offer any of those big names. Just don`t tell him…

        • Walmyr says:

…and when the Canadiens signed him some people argued about the (high) price paid for a 3-4th liner…

I confess that I didn’t know him so much. But I knew he was/is the type of player we needed badly. In fact another Prust would be fantastic.

And never thought he would fill those other aspects of the game as a locker room guy and leadership among the kids, etc…

I don’t think in Prust as our future Captain. But he is a true leader right now, as Gorges, Gionta, Plecks and Markov…

          • habsguru says:

Prust is way too tall to be the captain.

          • I’d love another Prust. If Buffalo’s fire sale continues, I’m hoping his name will be Steve Ott.

Agree, perhaps because those Red Sox teams were so long the underdog since their previous championship. Was it just me or did it seem a bit contrived watching Pedroia try wave his long foul ball fair, a la Fisk.

Either way, congrats to the Red Sox, they were the best team in baseball this season and Big Papi put on a Babe Ruth like performance in the Series Finals.

      • Lafleurguy says:

Similarities? Down 6-3, 10th inning (I think), 3-run bomb, and later a 7-6 win in the sixth game, Sox lose series. 0-0, lead-off (I think), long foul ball, Sox win series. The similarities are the Sox won the sixth game of each series, and the (I think) thing.

    • Rugger says:

As I very big Sox fan in the 60′s early 70′s I absolutely hated Yaz. While I admit he was great, so many players were traded away that I liked because they didn’t see eye to eye with Yaz. (Smith, the Hawk, Boomer, Bill Lee…). When Scott was traded, that was the end of my Sox fan era (though I loved to watch Louis Tiant pitch! Edit and can’t forget Pudgy Fisk!)

      • Lafleurguy says:

My Dad took up studies at B.U. and had us with him for one year, but man, what a year for an Edmonton kid to bond with the Red Sox. I really liked a shy rookie 2B baseman, Doug Griffin. Tony Conigliaro got beaned that year (’70). Tiant helped to pave the way for Will Ferrell’s opening pitch schtick.

“May you live in interesting times.”

        • Rugger says:

Tony C. was beaned in 67 during the pennent race. He could have been one of the greatest. Not sure if he is still the youngest to reach 100 HR’s. One my favorites from that time was Jose Santiago – he lost a great pitching dual in the 67 WS with Bob Gibson of the Cards 2-1 with the one run for the Sox being Santiago’s HR (don’t get me started on the DH!)
