Jaroslav Spacek underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee yesterday in Pensacola, Fla. and the prognosis is that he will be able to resume playing in 3-5 weeks.
“The good news is that will have him back before the end of the regular season,” said coach Jacques Martin.
The Canadiens held an optional morning skate with about a dozen players on the ice. Scott Gomez was among the missing but he will play tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Lightning coach Guy Boucher said his team faces a number of game-time decisions. Vinnie Lecavalier (mid-body) and Marc-André Bergeron (back spasms) both skated this morning but neither is certain to play. Mattias Ritolla, who was expected to play with Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos, is out with the flu and an ankle injury has sidelined tough guy Steve Downie indefinitely.

The management/ownership of St Louis expected to make the playoffs this year as I have heard that if the team did not qualify this year for post season there was some sort of discount or rebate coming back to their season ticket holders for this past season or for next season tickets………
I have to admit. I was one of those people but only because he was always a step behind as a winger. Considering we have pleky-deezy-gomez at center and the lack of wingers i guess the Canadiens wanted to develop him as a winger. Obviously that didn’t turn out well, and if Habs wanted to continue his develpment as a winger then yes he should have been sent down to Hamilton and get better as a winger. Now as a center he’s finally fitting in well and im glad he’s still here in MTL.
Nice to see that Spacek will be coming back in a few weeks. Just in time for the last few games and the playoffs!
With him back we will have a pretty healthy defense corps which bodes well for being able to manage the older players time effectively. We should be set for the marathon that is the playoffs.
Also, OT I know, but Gomez NEVER practices lol!!!! What a ham.
Well it was reported that PG was very high on Eller as were other teams.
Timmo ….your boy MAB and Gomez …tonite ..head to head …what a match up !!
NHL.com -
“First-round preview? If the season ended Friday, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Montreal Canadiens would square off in a juicy Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup. The Quebecois connections would dominate the headlines — Tampa Bay is led by coach Guy Boucher and stars Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Simon Gagne.”
Seriously, why are they getting so excited over this? That Montreal could have possibly attained these people just because they’re French??
Flyers, Bruins and Habs all must have a horseshoe somewhere in them! The only good teams in the Eastern Conference didn’t try to win the first half of the year and so both New Jersey and the Islanders the only powerful Eastern teams won’t be in these playoffs.
You would think you accidentally clicked on an old link…just the same old dead horse “Gomez sucks, get over it” post. Incessantly whining about how the other posters are talking about a Habs player on HIO (God forbid), clogging up HIO’s frail servers. I swear, some of you act like you are forced to read the posts on this site.
lars eller!
Keep whining then, we should really learn how to ignore the losers.
turning out to be gauthiers best move here if eller continues this way. hell he is what? 21 or 22 only?
he is not the same player. he is playing with so much confidence now. sorta like how price is now as compared with last season for him as well.
Well…
Guy Boucher was part of the Habs organization…
Vinny was heavily rumoured to becoming to Montreal at the end of the 2008-09 season, and a deal was in place to land Vinny which was nixed by Buttman because both Tampa owners were not in agreement…..
Gange’s agent contacted the Habs in the offseason to see if there was a place for Gange on the Habs roster…
So, other than St. Louis, it’s quite possible that Montreal could have had these guys as part of their organization…
If they don’t make the play-offs season tickets will be 1/2 price. LMFAO. The Blues got shafted in the Halak deal. Sad but true as I liked Halak a lot as a Hab. The truth is he hasn’t the stamina to be a #1 goaltender.
Saying New Jersey, and the Islanders, are “the only powerful Eastern teams” really shows you have it all figured out.
Gomez is just Winning.
wouldnt say the islanders are that powerful to be honest lol
it was reported that philly had offered us a significantly better deal than what St louis gave us but PG opted to deal him out west instead of making an eastern conference team stronger.
replied to the wrong post
PK Subban sits 3rd in NHL rookie defensemen scoring with 28 points. Kevin Shattenkirk and Cam Fowler each have 29 points.
I am surprised he didn’t mention that other powerhouse…… you know……. the Leaves.
Duh, winning!!!

Steve Downie out indefinitely? Good. Why can’t more schmucks have those kinds of injuries?
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
with the 2 points he gets tonight he will pass both of them
dont fret, Sabres suck at their corps. Philly’s in a bad spell.

I’m dreaming of a Vezina nimoination for Carey, a Calder nomination for PK, and a Selke nomination for Pleks… but the realist in me says we’ll only get the Vezina nomination.
buff over philly= value
Well I tihnk they kinda told you why. quebecois connections… lots of people with the team are from Quebec. The Canadiens are the face of Quebec and the quebecois in sports, and probably culturally as well.
Not a thrilling story whatsoever, pretty weak actually, but they gotta make their drama somehow.
Gomez missing in practice & during games.
Good news, he scares me in games like tonights. Without Downie in the line-up is Montreal a more physical team than Tampa? I think they might be with Mara and Sopel playing.
how about:
sometimes bugs makes me wonder
Still shoulda been in the minors though. Anyone else woulda gotten more’n 6 lousy points halfway through the season and THAT difference coulda altered a few results of games which in turn could affect the overall standing at the end of the year, that which could mean either an easier opponent or home-ice advantage.
No go. I invite you to sell your spiel to the tourists, cuz I ain’t buyin.
I live here, Jonny. I SAW with my own eyes Dezzy RACK UP the points since his call-up. HE shoulda been up here RIGHT from the get-go instead of Eller. Let Eller do his thing and get called up at around Dezzy’s time. Probably woulda been a better player for it. The Pac-Man sure was…
That’s the honest truth, isn’t it? Let’s be real here. No shame in saying that that’s EXACTLY how it shoulda been, right? Cuz Dezzy wouldna gone the firt 40 with 6 points, would he’ve? Let’s be real.
So…youpi-doo, Eller, ok? He’s learning to PASS the puck to shooters instead of dashing in through the middle and being squeezed out on the side. Great. Step 1. But we’re not where we could be in the standings had Dezzy been here earlier instead of him. He’s gotta keep it up. I’m not ready to do cartwheels for’m yet.
Hell, I’m HAPPY Halak’s hurt. Honestly. I wanted Eller to “have the same impact on the club as Halak” for me to consider the deal worthwhile. So hopefully, Eller will keep it up and Halak can be out for the rest of the year so I can say “Ok, you know what? That wasn’t too bad…”
Sorry, I don’t speak…Norwegian?
I’ve PMed you what you shoulda do, Bugsy.

You might want to spread some newspapers around ahead of time.
Think you’re late, all the lame jokes have already been made.
Even still, without Malone and Downie, Tampa isn’t that physical at all. Boston gave them some fits with their physical play on Thursday. Putting Weber back in makes a lot of sense as there isn’t much need for a slower more physical D, but for a better transition player with more offense.

Um…er…what the hell?
I agree, from general hockey physical standpoint Montreal has been much better this year. As long as the game doesn’t not degenerate into a circa 1970s line brawl like the last Boston game, this team is fine.
I’m not worried about Boston pulling the same stunts this Tuesday, Boston only seems to cross the line when they are at home.

Not lame. He out right sucks. The Habs could have gotten two grinders with size for 3.75 mil each!
if you base it all on points fine, but if you watch every game then you would have seen how good he could of been if given the minutes and the right linemates. its not a suprise to me based on how he played, not on the points he got. How did he reach this this point? out of nowhere? cleary he has been progessing. the only time i would have agreed with him going to the minors is when he was benched in place of DD. He lost confidence there and it took him a while to get going again, it didnt help that he was playing on the wing. so if JM wasnt going to use him then yeah maybe the minors. MY POINT is, if given the minutes and the right players, he is GOOD enough to play in the NHL.
I dont care where you live, i live here too and ive watched prob 85% of the games for the last 15 years. so I FEEL i know what im talking about too.
As for DD, maybe they would have let him stay up if he had a good preseason. and he wasnt half the size of Eller.
DOnt tell me that DD has more potential of being an All around hockey player than ELler, cause its just not true. ELLER is going to be a ryan Getzlaf kind of player. and all fans should be excited about that.

If you allow every player to have 50 games before showing any return of significance, you’re going nowhere fast. Furthermore, you lost all credibility by mentioning Getzlaf.
Sorry, Jonny.

Habs have 18 goals in the last 5 games with 11 against with our present line combinations. Won 4 of those 5. We now have 4 balanced lines, why would you change things because you think 1 line is not producing enough.

Dezzy was given some. Did something. Was given more.

XXIV…and counting
you never know. thats why i stick to 3 games one tie and two could happens. i dont lose much and when i win it more than pays for what ive lost previous. i wont spend more than 20 a week and my account is over 700. anyway thats my theory. my other ticket is pit, mtl, chi/to tie. how sweet would that be? good luck to you too bud!
good luck, yeah it seems easy a lot of the time, but it never is. My dad plays every day and he wins maybe once a month if he is lucky.
i hate that voice that says thay cant win them all. my ticket with that game on it is buf over philly, van/la tie, toronto over chi. i like to keep it to 3 and pick one tie. i worry about to because like i said..how long can they keep it up?
i picked a tie on that one.
thanks, the reason i took LA is based on the there last ten games, LA has gone 7-2-1 while Van is 5-5.the kings have beaten them twice and the game is at home.
but i still find it hard to bet against Van.
at least one of them will be logical in some way
buffalo won!!! maybe your ticket it okay!
5-7 games even if you think its a sure thing is alot harder, i think
ties are always the hardest to pick, i remember hearing a story last year about a cab driver who picked 5 ties and 1 regulation winner, dropped a 20 and boom 500,000$ later, always nice to dream
You and I may have to pick another ticket. Philly up 2-0 after 1 on Buffalo. I have Buff and Habs and not feeling good right now.
there are you usually atleast 3 ties every saturday so you never know
Well the bud fans will differ with you. Unbelievably they think Reimer should be the Hart, Calder and Vezina winner!!!! After all the guy has been an impact in 25 games …. they drive me nuts
vezina trophy candidates price, thomas, rinne, lundqvist ….other goalies playing really well quick, crawford, backstrom
thinking about the players in front of each goalie and the pressure on them , PRICE wins hands down , there is no debate
Move Quick into the top 4 and take out Lundqvist.
RDS was saying he had back spasms when he was a healthy scratch. Most media are saying he’s a gametime decision tonight, RDS says he’s in the lineup.
Personally, i dont like gomez getting any points. they way he is playing he doesnt deserve them. that stretch where he was getting a lot points bugged me cause he wasnt playing well. i dont like to judge players soley on their points. ITs how hard they work , cause as long you work hard the points will come. IF he starts to play well then ill want him to get the points. His entire game is terrible, its hard to support that. AND I was all for keeping Price, never wanted them to trade him, and i said from day one i LOVE the return we got for Halak.
I think some of us really need to hold off the obsession towards Gomez…
Many of them sound like they don’t want him to succeed, reminds me of the Price vs Halak era… maybe some of those pro-Halak nuts turned their attention towards Gomez.
Read somewhere that MAB is out with back spasms.
Presumably, when Mabby tries to get back after coughin’ up the puck at the other team’s blue line, he suffers spasms on the pivot.
No known cure.
I really hope MAB plays.
He is a very busy man.
I guess the photos he had of Sather, must of included BG as well
Gomez doesn’t show up for any of the games and now he doesn’t show up for any practices either. And he gets 7.5 million to do this. What a nice gig.
this is what i got for my mis-o-jeu ticket, id appreciate some thoughts on it and maybe some suggestions
LA over Van
Bos over PIt
CHI over TOr
DEt over Pho
SJ over Dallas
MOn over Tampa ( i needed a six one, i usually dont bet on montreal games)
i like your picks, but i would take phx over det, and try to put no more then 3 picks per ticket
I would take Van over LA. The rest look good, and good luck hope you win.
the team should just officially hire his ass to operate on our players….every god damn year
Pensacola huh? At one point I thought the Habs should put a minor league team in Birmingham, Alabama to be closer to Dr. Andrews.
The tough stuff is behind us!
Fyi, He has a sports medicine center in Gulf Breeze Florida also.
ahahahahaha
Zing!!!!
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Damn right, sounds like an excuse to mitigate criticism and to keep missing the optional practices to me.
more excuses for Gomez …if he can;t help the team he should man up !!! After all he needs the rest since he’s gonna shine for us in the playoffs …ya right !
Could be psychiatric therapy.
Then you have to wonder why he led all forwards in ice time in a game where we were handily beating the pathers. If gomez is hurting then he should have been sitting after we made it 4-0 and giving icetime to DD and Eller instead.
Heard from Stubbs’ twitter page that Gomez is dealing with an undisclosed injury. That explains all the therapy days.
Maybe he strained his back picking up his pay cheque?
head stuck up his behind I figure partner !
1st game of the season, Eller was given 16:27 TOI including 2:15 on the PP (he took a dumb hooking penalty). Eller was handed the opportunity right away for top line time, offensive and PP duty but he played himself out of it. Eller has often been given a shot on the “top lines”.
Desharnais’s first game of the season, he was given 13:23 TOI and no PP time. Desharnais’ 2nd game he was given 14:09 TOI including 2:53 on the PP. He made things happen and got a point. Desharnais had to earn his PP time, and he did. Desharnais has not been given a shot at the “top lines”.
Before tonigth’s game, Desharnais leads the team with .04699 points per minute played while Eller ranks 11th among the forwards at .02303. At even strength, Eller has 13 points with 628:54 TOI (.02067 pts/min) while Desharnais has 9 points in 261:19 TOI (.03444 pts/min).
You can be sure that if his name was David Harness Bugs wouldn’t even know which team he plays on.
Let’s look at Lars Eller at 20 years old
2009-10 Peoria Rivermen AHL 70GP 18G 39A 57pts
David Desharnais at 20 years old was in the QMJHL
Now let’s look at David Desharnais at 22 years old
2008-09 Hamilton Bulldogs AHL 77GP 24G 34G 58pts
Eller is 3 years younger and 6 inches taller than Desharnais and that is huge in today’s NHL.
I said last season that Desharnais would make the NHL and I am glad we have him. I am also very happy with Eller. DD and Schultz isn’t worth an exchange for Halak though. Eller and Schultz was a steal.
We’re going in circles, Jonny.
And honestly, I’m quite content to leave it at my credibility being questioned by someone who sees Eller as “a Getzlaf who will drop the gloves.”
Perspective drawn quite adequately, I believe.
i agree, its not important really. i hope both will excel on this team for a very long time.
More importantly how do we tell which games Poo Poo is gonna show up for and which games he’s gonna be the invisible man? Is Pouliot french for inconsistent?
come on man, why do you compare the 2? they were given different roles. Eller hasnt been given the PP time, dont tell me Eller was given the same oppurtunity as DD to be offensive. I like both, DD has been a pleasant surprise. all im saying is that Eller has been pretty solid all year. and he doesnt need to go hamilton and dominate, he is a special talent and when he gets his chance he will dominate here. IF you dont see his upside than i question your credibility.
Perfect ! Thanks !

Thanks but i’m in mexico for the week…i’ll try CBC but if not feel free to suggest something else
We will know within 10 mins if this is a game they want. It is our two points if they play and stay out of the box. Pouliot and PK, are you hearing me.!!
Kostitsin has been smiling since he has been with Eller and Moen. He seems to be having fun again, chemistry is there,
Thing is, with this team we really won’t know a damn thing until the final horn sounds. They could play half the game looking like a last place team sucking air and the other half like a contender. Which team will show up when? Anybody’s guess.

Thanks, I’m here all week. Try the veal!
Now this is an SD post I can fully endorse.

It’s crazy how little hitting there was in the old games eh? Sorta takes A LOT of the wind out of the “cracking down on headshots will take hitting out of the game” argument.
The goaltending was also almost comically bad compared to today.
been watching “vintage” hockey from 1975.
Sabres vs Flyers
“Holy Crap hockey, Batman!!”
back in the day there were very, very few hits. against boards or open ice.
NHL hockey of ’75 looks like shinny hockey today.
No helmets, small pads, no heavy hitting, lots of stick work.
Bobby Clarke would not make the NHL today.
Seriously. He would be too slow to keep up. Not even close.
Neither would Barber or Leach or any of them.
The players are so much bigger, so much faster, so much better equiped with pads, skates, sticks, etc,
I think it would be an excellent idea to increase the size of the ice surfaces.
The game would have to open up, and the players would have more room to move.
Go to Olympic ice.
Maybe this would make the games faster and more attractive to fans.
The old ice surface was perfect for 35 years ago.
The players have evolved so much, they have outgrown the ice surfaces.
Its normal evolution.
My father was 5’10, I’m 6’0, my son is 6’2.
Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.
That’s hilarious. Gotta admit, I’ve been waiting for him to falter since he was at only 10 starts, but it hasn’t happened yet. He’s playing good for them. A goalie with confidence can play over his head for a while but not over a career though. I am old enough to remember Habs fans annointing Steve Penny as the new Ken Dryden.
Funny you mention Penny, that is exactly who he reminds me of. I still think once the book is out on Reimers weak points he will come back to earth.
anyone know where I can catch the game online ??
Thanks in advance !
If you live in Canada I believe you should be able to watch it on cbc.ca.
Agree, Lundquist has not been the saviour for Rangers this year he has been in past.
Kostitsyn is a player who goes on hot streaks with amazing regularity. It seems that once a year he’s good to catch fire for about a month, making us all fall in love with him again, until he invariably falls back to earth
Last season he scored 20 of his 33 pts in an 18 game stretch from Nov 17 to Dec 28.
In 2008-2009 he scored 25 of his 41 pts in a 26 game stretch between Dec 27 and Feb 19.
In 2007-2008 he scored 26 of his 53 pts in a 27 game stretch between and February 5th.
The thing is though, pretty much every team has a Kostitsyn…Horton, Penner, and Cole are three excellent examples. It just shows how unbelievably talented these players are and how razor thin the difference is between succeeding and struggling.
Very Funny, hopefully Gomez will finally break out !
Nice to see the Spacek thread contain not one post about Spacek.
Maybe the title should be:
Spacek surgery goes well, Gomez still sucks.
rinne has to be a favourite also…

felt like sayin’ it.

anyone remember who was offered for Lecavalier , wasnt it price ,PK and plecky , boy would they really be laughing now
Go Habs!
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Holy Crap!! I started out watching Sports Center on TSN and it was Leafs, Leafs and more Leafs, they interviewed everyone except the stick boy I think followed by 15 seconds about the Habs so I switched to yours and mine the CBC and it was just as bad, you would think the Leafs were first overall in the league, boys they are a 10th place team who will probably miss the post season AGAIN! Give it up you guys!
1 minute in and the Loafs are down 1, perfect

The “Ah-heh-hem”. Very funny.
Cheers.

Young AK’s been absent all year,
now Eller and Moener are here!
They’ve got him to light
the red light every night,
now his critics are all feelin’ queer.
“But wait, he’ll slack off,” so they’ll say,
“’cause he’s Russki or Busky, or lay….
zier than “GO”-mer!”
(whose name’s a misnomer)
I don’t care! Long as we win the day!

Buffalo beat Flyers and moved into a playoff spot and still has games in hand. The only Eastern playoff spot I see up for grabs is the ONE LAST SPOT #8 probably which will be won by ONE of Toronto, NYR or Carolina. And of those 3 teams the only one who could upset anyone in a series is Toronto, but they still must pass BOTH the Rangers and Carolina to get in.
