There’s a reason bare-knuckle boxing was banned in the earliest years of the 20th century.
It was a savage “sport” that exacted a grim toll among its practitioners.
The NHL is the only team sport that allows fighting. To the delight of Don Cherry and his minions, “character players” (translation: big hearts, limited skills) drop their gloves and try to beat other’s brains in.
How much longer?

So let me get this straight we’re talking about taking fighting out oof hockey because 3 enforcers commit suicide (which is very sad tragedy to see) and one has a heart attack. BUT its ok to watch a 20 min fight on ufc or a mixed martial arts fight (which may I add are alot worse then these 2 min fights on the ice) . Am I understanding this right ?
Not only that whos to say that fightings the reason the got depression problems in the first place? See everybody talks about how fighting’s the reason for these deaths but thats unprovable.
I mean yes we go to a hockey game to watch hockey but at the same time when ever we see a fight break out on the ice it excites us. Plus you get rid of fighting how do you protect your all stars on the team then, cause thats why their called enforcers.
I mean not only that but say we do ban fighting do we really expect people to stop fighting , we banned hits to the head but that still happens . I mean come on lets get real hear!
…finally, before I hit the hay, …kudos to ‘Andrew Berkshire, Esq.’ for an enthusiastic review of PK Subban in EotP …Andy ‘hit all the bases’ on one of My favorite Players

As wittnessed by last years playoff boondoggle, in which a bonified goon team wound up winning the SC, aided and abetted by league ineptitude and nepotism, it is apparent that the bush league known as the NHL, has decided that for the game to grow in the US, it must be played in a manner that can only be described as reflecting said playoffs. As such, they are not interested in taking head shots out of the game. The NHL is not about speed and skill, it is reverting to pre-lockout hockey. The Gouins and Philly exemplify the direction that is being promoted to sell the game to it’s mainly American audiences. These unfortunate and untimely deaths will do little to inhibit Gary, et als, legacy.
It is going to be an interesting season for sure, on many levels.
Sal from the Hammer
It serves no purpose. It alters the outcome of zero (or zed) games. It makes contests take longer than they should. And finally, today’s staged fights flat out suck and are of interest only to fans we could all do without!

***Subbang Baby!!!***
really? on your last point…try going to the Bell Center and watching a game…I guess all 21K and change who go to all the games are “fans we could all do without” get a clue…its sport, its a game , its entertainment…frankly – if I spend $200 on tix to a game – goals, saves, wins, scraps.. etc is what I am rooting for…I would rather watch a 5-4 loss with 2 scraps than a 1-0 W yawner unless it has end of season playoff implications….
You’d rather watch your team lose and fight than win and not…. Yeah, you’re the kind of idiot Toe Blake is talking about.
