Silver for Diaz, bronze for Galchenyuk at world championship

A couple of Canadiens players and a Habs prospect will be coming home from the World Hockey Championship in Sweden with medals.

Raphael Diaz was part of the Switzerland team that settled for silver after losing 5-1 to Sweden in Sunday’s final. It marked the first medal at the tournament for Switzerland in 60 years. Diaz logged 20:45 of ice time in the gold-medal game.

Alex Galchenyuk was the star for the United States in the bronze-medal game, scoring twice in the shootout during a 3-2 win over Finland after the Americans blew a 2-0 third-period lead. Canadiens prospect Danny Kristo, a second-round draft pick in 2008 (56th overall) was also on Team USA.

Other Canadiens players who participated at the world championship were Tomas Plekanec (Czech Republic), P.K. Subban (Canada) and prospect Tim Bozon (France), a third-round pick (64th overall) at last year’s NHL entry draft..

  1. The Dude says:

Well with the report of Roy to become the New Head coach of the Avalanche I would just like too add G*dD@M m*th#r F*ck#r!!!!! He should be head coach in Montreal! And as for Mr Timmons..start getting BIG CHIPPY ATHLETES WHO CAN TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES and their team-mates.

    • Kooch7800 says:

Roy was a great player….doesn’t mean he would be a great coach.
Gretzky is a great example. Best player in the world…not a coach

Let’s see how Roy does in the bigs as a coach

      • Maritime Ron says:

I don’t believe Gretzky coached a day in his life before he was told to go behind the bench and earn the money the majority Phoenix owner was giving him.

        • Kooch7800 says:

That is 100% tue. BUT i also remember Roy losing his cool behind the bench and also leading to his son being charged….

He is a bit of a lose cannon. He will need to be a bit more calm in the NHL to have success

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

          • Maritime Ron says:

I may be wrong, but I think he has cooled off a bit since his sons no longer play

    • Mattyleg says:

I would rather have Therrien behind the bench than Roy.
Why do you think that Roy would be good as head coach in Montreal?
      What are his NHL credentials?
You want another rookie coach in Montreal? You must be a glutton for punishment, Dude.

      …and it’s Timmins.

  2. Kooch7800 says:

How about Detroit again…..they blew me away with beating the ducks which I didn’t think would happen and now they are putting the hawks off their game as well. The Hawks keep trying to be more physical and intimidate which isn’t their game and detroit is beating them. Still lots of hockey to be played but I have been impressed by them so far in the playoffs.

If they could knock out the Hawks that would be huge

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

    • Cal says:

They have the right combination of size, speed, D and goaltending. Add Zetterberg and Datsyuk and Toews may be golfing earlier than expected.

      • Kooch7800 says:

They really struggled this regular season and barely made it. Now they are making some noise. I am cheering for them now for my hockey pool’s sake. Everyone has the Pens and Chi town in the final….

I think it may be LA vs Pens

  3. Hab No Fear says:

Habfan17 wrote that the Habs should pick Frederik Gauthier in the second round it’ll be too late he is gone in top 15 if not before, 6.3/4 220 center he is a top 10 forward in this draft.

    • Marc10 says:

The draft will be fascinating this year. Lots of top end talent and a deep class as well. Will Trevor Timmins, MB and co land a few more gems? Every draft is important, but with our youth movement, it would be great if we found a large center who can also play wing. Seems like this draft is going to be huge in how fast we’ll be graduating from pretender to contender…

With linesmen throwing out centers left right and center during the playoffs, I noticed the Sens could reload quite quickly as they seem to have two center-capable players on the ice at any given time.

In case people didn’t see Stubbs tweet from half an hour ago.
In today’s Gazette. Have fun, guys… I’m not touching this one #Sens #Habs 34 minutes ago

  5. commandant says:

Also #40 on the draft board. Chris Bigras, Owen Sound.

  6. commandant says:

If you havent’ seen Domi’s pass last night, check it out.

The Knights lost though, meaning every team is 1-1 so far.

    • HabinBurlington says:

Did I hear correctly on the sports shows, that last year was the first time in Memorial cup history that all teams were 1-1 after their first two games, and this year we have the same records again?

    • Kooch7800 says:

The kid has hands. His Dad being the meathead he was could play hockey as well but he doesn’t have the hands his kid has. I remember how fast Domi used to be though.

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

    • Cal says:

Nice pass. If he tries that in the NHL, he is flattened by the Dman who won’t be watching the puck.

      • Maritime Ron says:

        Dustin Penner agrees with you

        Dustin Penner ‏@Dustinpenner25 9h
This is pretty impressive. Try doing that in a big game though!…….

        • Kooch7800 says:

I agree, there are usually a lot of plays you can pull of in Jr that when you get the pro’s you can’t anymore.

I still think Domi will be a good NHL’er.

Speaking of Penner…he is actually trying in the playoffs this year. what is up with that!

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

          • Cal says:

Penner’s UFA this July. What a surprise that he’s putting in an effort, eh? 😉

          • Kooch7800 says:

LOL, no doubt. Funny how that works

I think Lappierre is a UFA this year as well. He wouldn’t be a bad addition to our bottom 6 again. I would rather him over Armstrong

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

    • Marc10 says:

What a great play all around. Wish I could do that… Wow!

      • Mr_MacDougall says:

playing pick-up one of my best friends attempted a similar play and lost an edge, went flying into the boards, once he popped up unscathed both benches erupted with sticks slapping against the boards.. only negative, he was wearing a Habs jersey!

PS he had NO business trying a move like that haha

    • 24 Cups says:

Great finish by Horvath on a puck that is still in the air.

    • Maksimir says:

On the receiving end of that pass was Horvat… would love to see him in a Habs jersey someday.
