Shocking: Boston radio attacks Hickey, Montreal

Attack on Hickey | • Attack on Montreal

A couple of open-line hosts on Boston’s 98.5 radio reacted today to Pat Hickey’s opinion piece on Wednesday’s Bruins-Canadiens rumble, calling the veteran columnist a “weasly, wussy French-Canadian” (?), and then took a couple of gratuitous shots at Montreal.

(Boys, it’s February. You’re supposed to save this guff for the playoffs.)

No need to respond to these guys, who seem bent on being outrageous for the sake of ratings, but we provide two audio clips sent to us by the Team 990’s Rod Francis for your amusement.

And they wonder why people (not just the “french canadians”) look down on everything american… just listen to themselves… sheer ignorance. Typical American.

  36. Chris says:

Hey, the French were in WWII before the Americans were too…they just got steam-rolled by an army that hadn’t yet run out of raw materials and oil.

In WWII, France suffered 217 600 military deaths.  267 000 civilian deaths from hunger, bombings and other war related causes.  83 000 holocaust deaths.

And that came just one generation after the French suffered nearly 1.4 million military deaths and 300 000 civilian deaths in WWI, an amount that surpassed the combined losses suffered by Canada, the United States, England, Australia and India.

The whole mythology of the “cowardly” French can disappear anytime now.  I think the ability to joke about the war related deaths over the past century of over 2.2 million French men, women and children says far more about the joker than then the French, personally.

I’m 24, I can’t imagine how I’d explain to a child, such as my young niece and nephew who both play hockey, what reasons the players had for their dispicable actions

    Meh. Whatever. They’re just ignorant.

Red Wings just put them in their place and proved my point that the Booins have plenty to worry about before they puff up and declare themselves superior.

Also tonight’s Pens/Islanders game was absolute bush league. Never in my life have I see a guy charge across the ice to elbow a kid in the head by the blindside, turn around and fight that dazed injured kid, then yell from off ice at that injured player while the trainer is taking care of him. NHL has officially lost control. What…were they avenging DiPietro’s previous stupidity?

Can we get some bigger hockey players now ,PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. Big Bird says:

Couple of cents from the peanut gallery (as it’s been a while):

    1. Let them spew their venom.  We are the biggest reason the Bruins have not won a few Stanley Cups since a fellow named Bobby Orr skated for them.

    2. Even when the Bruins are SUPPOSED to win (i.e. 1971) we still beat them.  And more recently we beat them in the playoffs when we had no business doing so based on regular season stats.

    3. I’m not goign to generalize on ‘Americans’ because many of our fellow Habs fans are Americans.  Not to mention the fact that Pat Hickey is American born.  These guys are boors.  They make Don Cherry look educated/classy which is saying something.

    4. People were upset by the Habs loss to Boston.  I understand that.  I also understand we are missing Markov, Gorges, Camalleri and Gomez.  (No, he’s not injured and out of the lineup but he sure as hell is playing like it.)  I admire how the team stood up for each other.

    5. We have a lot more Stanley Cup banners (24) than Boston (5).  I think that is part of the underling hurt and animus towards the ‘french’. And if it’s not no worries.   I’ll be off God’s Green Earth long before Boston comes close to winning even half the number of Stanley Cups that Montreal has.

    6.  Too many men.  1979.

    they both cracked up

we stood stunned and to this day im wondering… is this a thing… like mexicans selling oranges on american highways, do we do drywall down there?

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. They we’re hilarious. Sure, they’re immature (or acting that way) but f#ck, gimme a break. It’s par for the course for those type of people. I won’t say that in the context or painting all Americans because there’s a whole helluva lot more great American people than A-holes… just like Canada’s got theirs. It’s just a schoolyard bully thing where insecure needledicks bask in the afterglow of a fight they couldn’t fight because they don’t have balls themselves so they laugh at the victim. History will repeat itself when the Bruins get humiliated here in Montreal. It’s happened before. Oh and I wonder what that snotty Bergeron or Savard thinks of these guys?

  60. Hobie Hansen says:

Oh man lol. Ok I see their point about

Kenopka admits he’s biased when he says a team will have difficulty winning without players who can compete in games that turn overly physical. An unrestricted free agent after the season, Kenopka also made no effort to hide the fact he would love to fill that role for the Canadiens if his services were to be required at the trade deadline.

“Every player wants to play in Montreal at some point in their career,” said Kenopka, who will get that chance Thursday night, except in an Islanders uniform.

  92. Chris says:

What is truly amazing, albeit in a tragic way, is how the Germans were able to field such a devastatingly effective army just one generation after their own colossal losses in the First World War: over two million dead and over 4.2 million wounded.

Perhaps my favourite book, I really believe that All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque should be required reading for all high school age students. I’ve yet to encounter a book that so perfectly captures the utter futility of war from a soldier’s perspective, and I can only hope that people might be less willing to send their country’s sons and daughters off to war without exploring every non-violent means possible of resolving conflict. The Willing Flesh (more popularly called Cross of Iron) by Willi Heinrich is another great one, set on the Eastern Front.

There is unfortunately a time and a place for war, although I think most of us dearly hope that this will some day not be the case. But there’s nothing heroic or valourous about it. Individuals might do heroic and valourous things within wars, but wars are dirty, awful and, far too often, completely inhumane. I’ve long been wary of using war and armies as celebratory focal points of a culture.

  93. observer says:

Greats points! I’m an American, but our contribution to WWI has always been over-rated. (My grandfather fought in the Rainbow Division, but the facts are the facts!) And, there is a fair case to be made that the losses suffered by the French in WWI hampered their ability to field an adequate army in 1939.  Maybe it’s the military historian in me, but when thinking about the French, I prefer the 100 days campaign leading up to Waterloo. Napoleon lands on French soil, encounters his countrymen sent to capture him, they embrace and resolve to fight the coalition. That is the stuff of legend!!!

  106. LA Loyalist says:

Good thing we dumped that bum Koivu. He was past his best before date.

     — Saku Koivu had two goals and an assist and rookie defenceman Cam Fowler scored in overtime Friday to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames.

  107. crabvader says:

    Koivu > Gomez.

  108. Chris says:

I don’t think this post is going to help you ditch your rep of being more of a Ducks fan than a Habs fan…  ;)

  109. SeriousFan09 says:

He only had 1G in his last 12 games before this and that was with him getting extra ice time due to Getzlaf being out with facial fractures. Saku has worked best this season when the Big Line of Perry, Ryan and Getzlaf is around to wear down the opposition.

Koivu’s consistency has waned more as he’s aged, he gets his points with all-out effort and force of will with the toll injuries took on his skating but it’s become harder for him to do as he’s gotten older and the league has gotten younger.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  110. Yeats says:

Koivu was destined to become the Don Mattingly of the Montreal Canadiens, i.e.  perhaps the best player to have never won a Stanley Cup. Yea, it sucks. But, ask Brad Park how he feels? He was the 2nd best defenseman in an NHL that included Bobby Orr and the NY Rangers retired only Brian Leetch’s #2. That was just criminal in my opinion!

  111. showey47 says:

Koivu didn’t get dumped,he was moving on whether we traded for gomez or not.

  112. Trenton_Romulox says:

“Montreal has this snobby, snotty attitude that looks down on everything American…”

As an American who moved to Montreal last year, I can honestly say that I have never, ever experienced that. The people here are friendly and accepting. And the fact that I am SO angry at those two Bostonians (been to Boston lots of times, being from Maine, and that city is filled to the brim with jerks) for insulting Montreal tells you how much I’ve grown to love this place in mere months. I may not speak French (yet) but I feel like I’m a true part of this city in a way. And those talking head morons have no idea what they’re talking about. Boston is a dirty, grimy, trashy city full of prejudiced, racist morons who go out of their way to make their neighbours have worse days.

I’ll admit that I am exaggerating the badness of Boston, but I’m just really bothered by what they said about Hickey, French-Canadians, the Canadiens, and the city of Montreal. However, I’m only gonna vent here and not give those talking head jackwagons the satisfaction of knowing they got to me. They won’t change anyways.

  113. Yeats says:

i was watching the game on versus. missed the first period. on a few occasions the fans in boston were chanting USA USA USA and quite nicely the broadcasters pointed out that boston had more canadian players than the habs do and the habs have more US players than the bruins do. not sure if each chat was directed toward servicemen, if it was great. if not then it’s evidence the bruins fans do not know their hockey nor their team. i’m sure it was not all fans but most of them for sure.

i like to think habs fans are among the most educated hockey fans there are. but habs fans can be just as ignorant, the US anthem was booed several times when the iraq war broke out, and as TheAmerica points out the countries are good neighbors and on numerous occasions have fought together.

alas, while at a game even the most educated fans can get caught up in the moment so the fact the bruins chanted USA is a moot point to me. but that is the fans. i often listed to a radio show in buffalo on my drive home from work because they focus on the sabres and the bills (football). while i am a habs fan first i enjoy hearing the hosts of the show discuss and debate the sabres and hockey in general, i would be appalled if they were ever overly negative towards any other media or country – i bring this up because i am not tied to them from a fan perspective, not biased and just generally think negative sports reporting is not needed.

  128. TheAmerican says:

I’ve visited Habs Inside/Out every day for more than two years.  I’ve been a member with the handle “The American” for about two months, but I’ve never taken the time to write a post about a hockey game.

And I’m still not posting about a hockey game.  I was at the TD Bank Garden on Wednesday night to see the Habs.  It was an exciting and fun sporting event.  People that can skate better than I do and who know more about hockey than I do, can address the issues that fighting presents to the game.  (My view — it got out of control.)  But I write to address a different issue  – the Boston media’s attack on the Montreal media, Montreal, and Canada.

It takes something extraordinary to make The American embarrassed to be an American.  The folks in Boston, my former home and mother’s home town, have managed to meet the standard (again).  What people in Quebec might not know is that street vendors outside of the Garden were selling a variety of T-shirts.  Most proclaimed the Bruins fans extreme dislike of the Canadiens.  That’s fine – I don’t like the Bruins either.  Some, however, bore this misguided and ignorant slogan with middle finger and a maple leaf  – F*** CANADA.  Excuse me?  F*** CANADA?

Most Americans understand and The American understands that Canada stood with the U.S. on D-Day, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and that Canada helped send our Iranian hostages home.  Yet there are some people here (and elsewhere) that have lives so hollow that they use a hockey game – a hockey game! – as an excuse for releasing their frustrations and hate.  I’ve seen it in Boston.  I’ve seen it in New York City.  I’ve seen it in Philadelphia.  However, its one thing for a fan with a few beers to make comments about Canada or French Canada and quite another when the comments come from a man with a microphone and a transmitter.  Only from Boston does such vitriol spew forth from the media and that’s something for which that beautiful city should be ashamed.  It is simply unacceptable for a radio station to pay a man to broadcast hate about one of my nation’s best friends.  Something should be done, but nothing will be done.  As Mr. Boone points out, such talk generates ratings and revenue.  Money is king in the U.S., and more and more nothing else matters here.

I attended Wednesday’s night game with my brother.  We are both natives of Buffalo, New York and we both used to sing the Canadian and U.S. national anthems before our basement hockey games when we were small children.  On Wednesday, we both chanted – U.S.A.  U.S.A.  U.S.A – but only when the Garden saluted a soldier from the U.S. Army who was wounded in Afghanistan.  We were the only ones who did so.  It seems The American and Bruins fans have very different ideas about what being an American is all about.

  129. crazydude says:

Is this even realistic journalism?  I thought journalism was supposed to be a lot classier than this.  If you’re talking about hockey, keep it in hockey.  If you want to talk about the journalists who write in Montreal, then focus on the journalists and journalism that goes on in Montreal.  This is spineless, classless, and uber-nationalistic American garbage.  They’re really reaching here to try and bash the Canadiens and they crossed the line big time.

  130. s_impastato says:

His listeners vote for John Kerry over and over again.  Enough said on why that idiot radio talk show host still has a job.

  131. Nahlsy says:

Patrice Bergeron, Marc Savard, Claude Julien, Ray Bourque… I’ll leave it at that for now.

Makes as much sense as the dillweeds chanting U-S-A while the Bruins have 1 Yank in their lineup (Thomas) and the Habs have 6 (Gomez, Gionta, Gill, Pax, Halpern, Wiz)

  132. UK-HAB says:

Just this month in the UK two of the nations most firmiliar and respected “sportscasters” (is that right??!) lost their jobs over what was considered by most to be a a fairly mild sexist comment (off air but mics still on). Right call.

These guys? I think they need a date with GSP and then ask them what impression they have of the French!!!

  133. Danno says:

Someone should tell those two racist radio hosts that the U.S.A. is part of the world and not the other way around. Their hate and ignorance diminishes everyone and further alienates their country which was founded on the principles of tolerance, acceptance and inclusiveness. Consequently, these two gentlemen are not patriots as they pretend to be and they are not even true Americans. They are an embarassment to all civilized people and they should not be allowed to spew their venom on public airwaves.

I call on them to reflect on what they said and to do the honourable thing by making a full and sincere on-air apology.

Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti are misguided chauvinists and a disgrace. Shame on both of them.

  139. Exit716 says:

Wussy French Canadien? LMAO. That says it all. If it wasn’t for a French Canadien named Ray Bourque, most of this generation of Bruins fans would never have had a chance to see the Stanley Cup in their beloved city in 2001. The fact that Bourque brought the Cup home to Boston as a member of the Colorado Avalanche says all one needs to know about the Bruins and their cruddy ownership and idiotic fan base. I don’t recall Montreal throwing a welcome home Patrick Roy event after he left for Colorado and won the Cup twice more.

    Mr Hickey,

I live in Boston as a Habs fan.  Being called a french canadian wussy is nothing.  These guys are brutal….Boston fans latch on to the 1 good thing thats going on…Pats, Sox, Celtics….lastly the Bruins.  There are few, REAL hockey fans in this town that actually have a clue.  They care about winning fights not hockey games, sadly this makes up the majority of your Bruins fan base. Tied in with the general perception this area has on Montreal and Canada itself, you have no chance on the radio here, keep in mind most have no idea about hockey – or in any sport for that matter.  I am born/raised MTL moved to Boston @ age 11 and am die hard Habs fan  trust me man I have heard it all!!

    GO HABS GO
