Sergei Kostitsyn not making Philly trip

Sergei Kostitsyn will not make today’s charter flight to Philadelphia, nursing a lower body injury that coach Jacques Martin says leaves him day-to-day. Kostitsyn seemed to be favouring his right ankle last night during the loss to Carolina before leaving the contest early.

Martin said today that goaltending is not his problem, but he wouldn’t criticize the fans who booed Carey Price when he was announced as third star of the Wednesday game, a 2-1 loss. Fans pay good dollar for their entertainment, Martin said, and are entitled to their opinion.

The Canadiens held an 11:30 a.m. practice in Brossard before chartering to Philadelphia this afternoon for their Good Friday match against the Flyers. Then it’s right back home to play host to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

Practice updates were here via Twitter.

First of all Halak’s save % is .923 while Price is.912. That is quite a significant gap as far as save % go. It’s like saying a goalie with a .901% is pretty much having the same success as Price. If you don’t want to say Halak has been the #1 reason this team has any sniff at the playoffs then fine. The guy is 24-12-3 with an excellent GGA and Save% on a team that is average at best, especially during the injury days. He stole a slew of games single handedly this season. If he was just a little below excellent in 1 or 2 of those games, this team is not in the playoffs. Why are you just limiting things to the last 6 games? Oh, because it is the time frame that kind of suits Price. I mean look at the facts as a whole man. I wasn’t trashing Price. I just said that Halak is the man most responsible for the team positioning. Not the only guy, but the most. Anyone in the world can see that. It’s not like I’m going out on a limb here. Your so called beloved team has a chance at the playoffs (which they don’t deserve) not because of your love Price but because of Halak. People who even hate the Habs are giving him credit, while so called super fans like yourself, are trying to find reasons not to. Pretty messed up.

  2. KGB_AKA4787 says:

agree with u on that Plec has been invisible the last few games just how he was last year, but think if we signed him for 4 mill would not be worth it next year, let him walk and sign a bigger centerman with a natural scoring touch, hes gone anyway i think,

  3. joeybarrie says:

The Habs have scored 112 goals in front of Halak, and 93 goals in front of Price. Price has played 1 more game… HMMMMMMMMMMM…

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  4. Harani says:

Never once did I mention the Price vs Halak thing in my post. I just wanted to point out an interesting fact that further points out why booing Price or throwing him under the bus is totally ridiculous. Yes, Halak is good but Price doesn’t suck.

  5. HABWARRIOR says:

your name backwards is omit…hence i just omit reading your BS.

  6. joeybarrie says:

So why is it their save percentage is almost identical? They have made almost the exact same amount of saves… Anyone with an ounce of brains would realize that if the goalies are making the same amount of saves, maybe its the team in front of them that is making it harder on one. Give credit where credit is due… Halak has played 4 games in 6 and we have only taken 4 points from them. How exactly has Halak been responsible for our success lately?

What exactly does it take to show people that we have averaged less than 2 goals a game in the last 6. Yet we talk about goalies. I mean how fricken stupid is that????? Honestly. What exactly do you expect him to do. SAVE HIS FAIR SHARE OF SHOTS. They are both doing that. The problem is we arent scoring.

Halak is a saviour for letting in 4 goals against Edmonton???? THE GREAT OILERS???????  Im not against Halak here. But your saying he is carrying the team. WHAT are you talking about?

Its simple. Our players cannot score. MAYBE if we were in the bottom half of the league in goals against then you could say that. But when you are in the top half, and your in the bottom half is goals for… Well you only need an ounce of brains to know where the problem lies. For god’s sake my 3 year old nephew knows enough to not blame the goalie when you cant even muster 2 goals a game…

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  7. smiler2729 says:

    F the Flyers.

  8. smiler2729 says:

Yeah but enough of the Halak vs. Price thing. I love Carey Price, he’s a keeper, I also now love Jaro Halak, he’s a fiery competitor. When one fails, hopefully the other picks up the slack.

The KEY to this freakin’ team is the 3rd & 4th lines and the defensive side of the six defencemen. Too many dumb plays…

  9. doogmac says:

a great blog by engels he brings up some great points and i agree with him completely

  10. joeybarrie says:

This is truly a new level of stupidity. First off the reason we are close to not making the playoffs are the game we have recently lost. We have 4 points out of our last 6 games. Halak played in 4 of those games. So by your logic, if he had of played better we would have taken more points and be in a better position. So if fact your argument BLAMES HALAK for almost not making the playoffs.

So did Bob Gainey call up JM and make him play Price last night???

And if I read this correct, you are blaming Price for our injuries? Price got our players hurt? So when Camma got hurt Halak was in the goal. Are you saying Halak hurt Cammalleri? So Halak hurt Camma to help the team gel???

Lastly, if JM is allowed to use Halak freely NOW, why is it Price has played more games this season????

Change your screen name to nunabrains. Because you have the dumbest posts I have ever read.

    Pre Game

A WTF happening for a WTF game. Everybody on RDS, and that includes Demers, was dressed to the nines. Every. Single. Dude. And I don’t even know what “dressed to the nines” means. I’ll have to ask Boone…or, yes, even Punkster. What the hell happened to Demers? Was he hijacked by one of those “You Dress Like You’re Homeless, So We’ll Fix It” reality shows? I’d suggest high-level kickbacks to pay for the tie, but he’s just a powerless senate appointee, y’all. The biggest bribe he ever sees is the cashier at the Parliament cafeteria not charging him for the extra pack o’ soda biscuits he takes for his soup.

That’s our Tom. The Bomb. Plow the other team’s goalie, then look bewildered as the penalty is called. “What? What’d I do?” Ah, the memories. Poor Tommy. What crime did he commit to get relegated to fourth line duty with Mr. -29 himself, Rob “Paul Coffey Didn’t Know When To Quit, Either” Brind’Amour?

The Habs have entered the Bizarro World. Used to be – i.e., way back at the beginning of the season – the Habs slept through the first period, then brought it for the second and third. Against Carolina, they kinda switched it up. Took their first-to-the-puck, short-passing, double-man-forecheck game, the one that had them totally dominating the first half, and pissed it away. Did Ward’s play lay that much negative mojo on them? You could almost sense a Canes collective “Hey, they want to be our b******!” mentality emerge early on in the third.

No, but seriously. Carolina’s SOG were 2, 8, and 17 through three periods, respectively. I’m having difficulty – translation: I’m too lazy to check – recalling such overt capitulation by the Habs during a game this season.

Speaking of high-level kickbacks. So, according to TSN’s John Lu, Kerry Fraser wore three ref jerseys last night, one for each period. The second was to be given to Scott Gomez – whazzat? – the third for a charity auction. The first? For PM Stephen Harper. In an ostensibly unrelated development, Fraser is scheduled to receive Canada’s coveted Order of Vidal Sassoon (OVA) this fall.

Back to Tom. Tom intentionally ran Price at the beginning of the game. He knew exactly what he was doing. Didn’t bother Price. But, the idea was the right one. For all the Habs’ 35 SOG, which were evenly distributed across lines, suggesting the dominance was complete prior to the third period, we never really got into Ward’s face. I sincerely believe that would have made the difference. He was just about the least frustrated dude on the ice. That guy might win a Conn Smythe one day.

The Halak/Price debate has finally concluded. Two-time Stanley Cup champion, three-time Hart Memorial Trophy recipient, winner of the Frank J. Selke trophy, the Lester B. Pearson Award, the Lionel Conacher Award, two-time member of the NHL First All-Star and Second All-Star teams, and resident TSN panel mouth-breathing dingbat, Bobby Clobber, said the Habs should sign Jaroslav Halak. Well, the Habs now have no choice but to sign Carey Price.

    Post Game

    As for Philly?: Crucify them.

    Crucify them.

lol i came on to this site just to post the EXACT same thing !

The Canadiens haven’t allowed more than 3 goals against since the Olympic break. The Canadiens have scored more than 2 goals in 4 of Carey Price’s 25 losses (OT and shootout included). A goalie with a .912 SA% and a 2.77 goals-against has 13 wins in 41 games. Marty Turco has 21 wins with a .913 SA% and a 2.74 gaa, Chris Mason has 27 wins with a .914. Marty Brodeur has 41 wins, with a .914. Jonas Hiller has a 2.76 gaa, and 29 wins. Nick Backstrom has a .903 SA% and a 2.70 gaa, and 26 wins.

one that gets me the most Marty Brodeur 41 wins .914 — Price sure does blow hey?

  14. Shublips says:

The Habs are just NOT able to score 5-on-5. It is a horrible problem that has plagued this team for years. Last night the same trend continued and as a result the Habs made Ward look amazing. Don’t get me wrong, because Ward WAS amazing, but I just think that the Habs anemic offense tends to make goaltenders look even better than they are.

Read my article about the game here:

  15. habbyone says:

Does it really matter? They might win. They might loose. At this point who really cares. This team pisses me off to no end. Watching them play only makes me miserable.

  16. ManApart says:

I’m not on Price at all for last night’s game. His play has been quite solid in 4 out of the 5 games he’s played since the Olympic break. However, To say there has been no difference between the 2, this year, is laughable. You never cease to amaze me with the selective stats you come up with to try to change reality. The Monster in Toronto has won 3 games when his team scored 2 or less goals. Pretty much every goaltender in the league has won a few games in that fashion. I guess there are no real differences between any of them then. Bottom line, Halak has way better numbers as a whole and the winning %s are a joke, when compared side by side, and they play for the same team. Some obscure, super specific stat, won’t change the fact that there is a significant difference between the two, this season. you’re just going to have to come to terms with that. And trying to call someone uninformed and ignorant because they don’t subscribe to your warped and confused perspective is pretty uninformed and ignorant in itself.

  17. joeybarrie says:

Simple. Our team plays to the level of our opposition. We will play well in Philly, and i predict a win.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  18. nunacanadien says:

The credit for building the team as a team goes to Halak.  When Cammy was hurt, the team gelled.  They gelled under Halak, not Price.  In fact Price has not really helped build the team, if anything, Price is the reason why we lost half the team last year, he lost so Gainey blamed the losses on the team solely but forgot to include Price.  Halak carried the team the year we got into the playoffs and Price destroyed the team by striking out 4 up and 4 down and it carried to the next year.  Now we have this year, and thank God Bob stepped aside early enough to allow Martin to use Halak freely.  Whether P.Gauthier interferes the way Gainey did, and forces Martin to use Price, it will again destroy the team.

  19. Ron in Ottawa says:

I am very worried about the habs making the playoffs. Not only do they look tired, confused and out of sinc, especially in their own end, they also have to deal with horrible coaching by JM. What will it take for him to call a time out and give our guys a break- and even a plan- in the last few minutes. He was a failure in Ottawa and in Florida and i think he will be a failure with the habs. In Ottawa he had some fantastic teams but he regularly got out coached by others.

  20. ManApart says:

Oh and BG had nothing to do with it? C’mon, he’s the one that put this weak team together out of desperation, because his last team was equally as weak. He was also the one who hired JM in the first place. Thank God he’s gone, but how long will we have to deal with his mistakes, that’s the question?

  21. jimmy shaker says:

I’m with you boss……we have to go 3-1-1 or 3-0-2…..I think to make it to the dance, and it starts with a big 4 point weekend coming up.  2 WINS and nothing less….4 POINTS….but for tonight…please go easy on us hockey ghosts, because the boys aren’t!

  22. KerryPrice says:

I know Pk Subban is better than Roman frikken Hamerlik, the guy is brutal.. Markov plays like Patrick Traverse when Price is in goal, looked lazy as hell lastnight. The Kostittyzyns are made of porcilin.I Wouldn`t mind having Brandon Sutter on our team. If Pleks wants more than 4 million, let him walk.. Contract year, they all play good, then disappear when the contract is signed. Pleks was invisble last year, not to mention his last few games.

  23. Storm Man says:

BINGO he is the one that draws up the game plan for the team, The game has passed him by we need a run and gun style of coach that is what the make up of this team is.

  24. ManApart says:

I’m not on Price at all, like some, but let’s face it, Halak is the one that has carried the team solely. Price has not been playing badly at all, but it is only because of Halak that the Habs have any chance at the playoffs. Let’s give credit where credit is due. I mean you can’t say Price has carried anything with a record of 13-20-5. What % of that record is Price’s fault is debateable, but certainly he cannot be given credit for “carrying’ the team.

  25. BJ says:

I wonder how far behind Komisarek was?

  26. Le Jadester says:

    What’s the deal with SK 74 ?

All I have heard is a lower body injury. I think he gave it another go in the 2nd for one shift, but that was it (almost scored too). Is the medical staff taking precautionary measures or is he really “effed” with another couple a weeks injury ?

    Habs, OLE !

  29. deuce6 says:

You forgot soft…Just making a point about Martin’s system? Do they want or do they like hitting..

Someone has to let them know you are allowed to hit the opposing players..

  30. WindsorHab-10 says:

Whether we make it or not, that douche behind the bench must go. He ruined this team IMO.

  31. Storm Man says:

Lmao Clark would be the first GM to go after Price, I have a funny feeling that Price will want out and we get stuck with Theodore oh sorry Halak and Prices wins a few cups and we will still not win one for the next 15 years. It is so sad that as some Habs fans thay toss a 22 year under the bus and we wonder why alot of top end players dont want to come here.

  32. WindsorHab-10 says:

Fans that booed Price can KISS HIS ASS. They are nothing but LOW LIVES that just embarrass Montreal & its fans.

  33. forskis says:

Mackenzie said to keep both and that PG should do whatever he can to find the money and do it and also because Price’s trade value is not as high as it could be.

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  34. pmaraw says:

i completely agree!  sign price to spite those fools.  seriously tho, I think both our goalies will end up with offer sheets and it will come down to where we can get the better return draft picks and whos offer sheet is higher, so on and so forth, i think a lot of it will be left out of habs managements hands, unless they get contracts done early

  35. habbyone says:

A lot of problems with this team. Goaltending isn’t one of them. We need a legit #1 center. We need a leader in the dressing room and we sure as hell need a coach that has a friggen clue. I’m sick of this emotionless vampire.

  36. pmaraw says:

@habsynth were you drunk last night? too much whiskey? all people wanted to do last night was NOT blame the loss on price and you proceed to call us all loser fanboys, you claim we cant make it in this world, trying to attack our identities, wallets and worst of all, our families.
Well I for one believe if indeed you have “made it” in this world that almost anyone can make it in this world considering your level of immaturity and lack of respect. if you can keep a job, or run a business and maintain it than anyone can. altho I cant imagine you have much hair on your head the way you blow your top over people not wanting to blame price when it was obvious to everyone except a few including yourself that it was not his fault.

this is not an april fools joke, but have a nice day everyone.

  37. SLONCOLD says:

my thought of the day. Sign Price to a 4 year 3.25M/y deal.

Did anyone listen to the TSN panel and how they all said they would keep halak over price?

  38. BJ says:

Without the efforts of Price & Halak this season we would not be wondering if we have a chance to get into the playoffs but would we be in the bottom 3 teams of the league. In my estimation this is how far both goalies have carried the rest of the team.

  39. jimmy shaker says:

Okay, here we go….Since the olympic break, both goalies aside from the ducks game and the oilers game have done a superb job.  Jaro doesn’t single handedly win games on his own (may have to have an exception on those games where he had 45+ save efforts to steal the game like it was posted many times on this site after the game)  He hasn’t had to do that of late, because the team D has been better, they have limited the shots, but to that it seems the offense has dried up with that change.  To Carey, I don’t think he LOSES games or is the main reason why we don’t win.  He’s played great of late, not so great in some of his starts throughout the year.  Jaro is pretty consistant all year, where Carey has not been as consistant as Jaro.  I think there is something in the air this year especially, last year as well that just hasn’t clicked for Carey.  Somehow nothing is going right for the kid.  I think when this season is over, he will come back even stronger mentally and the bounces of bad luck and just poor karma if whoever believes in that will be gone from this guy.  I like him and want him to succeed here in this city……but like I said, somehow this just isn’t his year, and in the same sense it has turned into Jaro’s year I feel.

  40. Ian Cobb says:

I still think we have the horses to get the job done. The one thing that worries me is the way the head coach plays the lines and his defence.

He burns his best players in the 1st and 2nd period and they simply have nothing left to give in the 3rd. Markov hardly left the ice and by the 3rd he was done like dinner.  He coached the same way in Ottawa and could never get to the next level.

3rd and 4th lines only played a shift or two a period. He has coached this way for a while and it shows big time by the results lately.

We can not pick on any one player or goal tender at all. It is the way the team is managed for the 60 min on the ice that is holding us back.!

  41. SLONCOLD says:

Price had a good 3rd period but i’m noticing the puck bouncing off of him alot but all in all liked the way he looked in the game.

This teams needs something to jump start the offense. BRING UP PK. I don’t think another 10 games in hamilton will help his development nor will playing 5 games with the habs stunt it.

We gotta start scoring and if we don’t atlanta might just catch us.

  42. tdrmoss84 says:

Heading to the Philly game again on Good Friday just like I did last time Montreal was in town.  I reside in the Lehigh Valley, and i’ve been to Montreal 4 times to witness a game….twice to the shrine on St Catherine’s St…It really bother’s me to hear the home fans booing a guy that has lately given us everything you can ask for…I will go to the game this friday and like always there will be the red white and blue in the upper tier cheering for the away team.  And that is how it should be…cheering not booing.  31 is not the problem….the defense is!  Where is Subban?  Our defense looks fragile and slow and the smurfs up front aren’t producing!  So please fans…UNITE!  Stop your jeering and let’s start cheering…GO HABS GO!

  49. TomNickle says:

That was my point and the team didn’t play like garbage.  We ran into a hot goalie, period.

  50. deuce6 says:

Can we all just move on and accept the fact that we played like garbage and gave away 2 points last night?

We have a great chance to win with both young tenders in there…Period

  53. TomNickle says:

Before the Halak wins and Price loses crowd comes out in full effect, I’ve got something to share.

Jaro Halak has won 2 games this season when the team scores 2 goals or less in front of him.

Carey Price has won 3 games this season when the team scores 2 goals or less in front of him.

That to me is a BIG indication that there is no real difference between the two this season.  For anyone to say that Jaro WINS games and Price LOSES games, is completely uninformed and ignorant.

In order to win games this late in the season when every team on the playoff bubble are gnawing and scratching to make the show, we have to score the dirty ones..We simply don’t want it bad enough..I bet Hailey Wickenheiser would even go to the net more than these softies..

  61. BJ says:

Bobby Clarke probably paid them off on behalf of Holmgren to get a chance at a Leclair/Desjardins type robbery. Keep Price & Halak for another year.

  62. SLONCOLD says:

i know some people might say 3.25 is alot per year but if you sign him to one year and he has a break out year after you’ll have to pay even more. this way you’ll have him signed until he’s set to become a UFA at 26.

by the way i love halak (probably going to order a set of his brians zero G pads) but at the end of the day i really think the organization will go with price. from what we have seen this year either goalie can win and if it’s a draw they’ll stick with carey.

  63. forskis says:

Like everyone else, I am disappointed in the loss and the way the team freaked out in the 3rd period.  Price did not lose this game and played well…but he did look nervous since it was his first home game in a while and he knew the crowd was going to get on him if he did not perform.  Like Price said after the game…if he plays well and loses, so be it, on to the next game.  Just wondering, does anyone else think that Pleks is tired or more injured than we think?  He has not looked that great lately…

I am starting to have doubts that they can make the playoffs but the I still think they can, and they will not be 4 and out…if they play as well as they did for the first 40 minutes last night in Philly tomorrow, they will be fine for tomorrow night.  Besides, Carolina and Ward are one of those teams/goalies who have Montreal’s number like NJ and Brodeur.

Also, it would be nice if our D gets out of the way of our goalies…Hammer slides into him and knocks the puck in and later in the game, they all decide to scrum and 6 guys fell on top of Price after he froze the puck.

What pisses me off is carey gets run into all night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! our D does nothing to protect him and our 3rd/4th line do nothing to get in the face of ward. Crash him, take a penalty, habs are great at dumping the puck.

I hate to see where this team and franchise is headed for next season or seasons to come.

Not good I say, not good.

  78. jimmy shaker says:

Didn’t come on here last night to rant, because I didn’t want to hear some of the bonehead things I’ve seen already.  Needed some hours and somehow a good nights sleep to cool off.  First off, Price played great.  I would not fault him at all on both goals.  The boys played pretty solid for 2 periods but then seemed as if the pressure got to them and they couldn’t play as a unit.  They were playing not to lose, whereas they needed to go out and play to win, like the first period showed.  The other side of that coin is Ward.  I said to myself, “There he goes again, playing like Marty against us”  Once he started making save after save, I knew it was going to be trouble…I just thought we would come out with at least a point. Secondly, MAB needs to be back on the D.  and Hammer needs a view from above.  Another bad game for this guy!  PP did look good until the third period opportunity, where they were so tight out there, they gave up 2 breakaways.  Next, we have 5 games left…..we need to go 4-1-1 or 3-0-2.  And most likely the first stat given, if boston, philly and atlanta win tonight.  Hopefully the hockey ghosts can come through for us tonight again.  I hate that we aren’t taking care of our business, and having resorted to scoreboard watching.  Lastly, the boys on the antichamber were going hard at it last night…..wish I had a english button that could translate for me, or maybe I should just order “roseta stone”  anyhow, they were saying that JM has no choice now but to ride Jaro for the last 5 games, which I have to agree with.  Not taking anything away from Carey, but once again it comes down to W’s, and the boys just don’t get it done when he’s in the crease.  Jaro has got to ride it out and somehow the boys need to score more than 2 goals per.  The last time we scored more than 2 goals w/out empty netters was either the edmonton game on the 11th of march.  Bottom line is the goalies have been great, the offense has dried up, MAB is better suited on the D, unless dare I say they bring up PK to add a spark and a different dimension in the back end.  It’s clear that Hammer is done here and O’byrne isn’t ready for top 2 minutes. Now Friday is the next biggest game of the season, hopefully Cammy can show up and get off the mark!  And if Price was booed yesterday, that’s pathetic, he was solid and deserved better.  This is coming from Jimmy Shaker a pro -halak guy.

    Sorry for the rant,

  79. TomNickle says:

Go back to him against Phili who lit him up on a night where he had no offensive support?

He’s getting the same offensive production from the team as Price too.

This team isn’t playing poorly.  Cam Ward stole that game last night, period.  That game is 4-0 after one period with 25 out of 30 goalies in the league in net for the Canes.

We can’t run into a hot goalie every night.  But I will say that Roman Hamrlik has now cost this team 3 games in the last calender week.  6 points gone by the waste side because of one player is unacceptable.  He needs to be sat down.  I don’t care who they call up.  Call up Belle, Weber, whoever you want Pierre, just don’t ride #44 the rest of the way.  It would be one thing if he was playing and not getting important minutes but he keeps riding this guy, like one shift is going to bring him out of this funk.  I don’t understand why Jacques continues to put him on the ice for the amount of important minutes that he does.

  80. habbyone says:

After performances like last night the Habs don’t deserve a playoff spot. Terrible coaching and a lack of talent still haunt this money making machine.

  81. smiler2729 says:

The Sabres and Devils own our ass so finishing 8th lets the Habs play the softer than you think Capitals and gives Montreal a fighting chance. Fear NOT fickle ones, the Habs make the playoffs.

PS. Pretty embarrassed at the booing of Price, it’s totally low class baby brain actions like that that keep the Habs off a lot of players’ free agent radars.

  82. jimmy shaker says:

If I was the PG or anyone in that organization, I would find those group of pukes that booed Price and ban them from the Bell Centre.  Get some real fans who appreciate the players they have and support them.  Now booing Hammer would have been fine, but not Price.  I think deep down Price is happy, he’s playing good, the fans are pushing him out and he’s okay with it.  He knows he has a future and can play at this level, and if the fans don’t appreciate him, he’ll go somewhere else.  Your take is spot on about free agents as well.  This is coming from pro-halak guy as well.  And if Price keeps these type of performances up, he may just win me back.  But again, for those stupid pukes who were booing, show some class, if you even know the meaning or how to spell it.  They were probably the same idiots rioting 2 years ago!  Man I’m pissed.

If we don’t win on Friday……I’m thinking our names will slowly start being erased from the dance invitation.

  84. PeterStone says:

been a while … the one thing we cant really complain about this team, is they come to compete almost every night.  It’s certainly not a lack of effort.  Having said that, the same issues that plagued this team for the last 2 decades , still exist.  We still dont have a legit # 1 C .. we lack size up front … we lack true grit on the top lines … we arent really a hitting team, and, we havent had a Mean Tough DMan since Chelios.

I have read, and heard, the comments re. the goaltending over the past few years … its a constant debate .. Hayward vs Theodore , Theodore or Huet , Huet or Price and the latest incarnation Price vs Halak … these are all really great to read about in the papers … but, in my opinion, its a smokescreen for the challenges we have … lack of 5 on 5 scoring … no real Toughness … No Size ..  and until those are truly addressed .. we will find ourselves in the same position season after season.

Re. the goalies, they both have impressed me with their maturity level this year.

Anyways, this is a .500team .. i think everyone knew that … they won 6 in a row, and they have lost 6 .. thats .500 .. we are exactly where most expected them to be .. average.

  85. jimhasbeen says:

    wow. good comment.

    hard-hitting and truth ringing.

it’s almost like Montreal doesn’t want to be known as a tough as nails, gritty squad.  they want to win with style, with grace–perpetually reliving the 70’s glory.

unfortunately, that style will not get it done in today’s league.  you have to leave your blood on the ice.

    alas, hate to love em.

  86. jimmy shaker says:

How come we’re the only ones that see this Hammer situation……if the people on this site and the fans at the bell centre understood the team, Hammer would be getting hammerd hereon this site and in the media and he would get the Patrice treatment everytime he touch’s the puck.  If I was PG and JM, I would be calling up PK, benching Hammer and Obyrne, putting MAB in for Obyrne and praying like crazy that the hyperbaric chamber can work wonders on Metro.  But Tommy just like you are using the angle of Jaro being tired, can’t you see my angle of Jaro get’s the W more often than Carey.  Is it deserved, not sure, is it fair, not sure…but that’s what I see……it’s just not Price’s moment right now for whatever reason.

  87. TomNickle says:

The funny thing about Roman is that I’ve been saying it since December and the majority of people called me an idiot.

His first pass is generally too hard to control.  He doesn’t skate in the defensive zone which traps him on the boards or in the corner with the puck causing bad turnovers.  The team is way ahead of him coming out of the zone because he’s afraid to move the puck and then he gets left on an island.  He has no chemistry with any forwards on the team.  He’s not covering in front of the net, he isn’t battling underneath, in the corners or on the half boards.

I really see NOTHING in his game that has brought value to this team since Christmas.  I don’t care about the salary when it comes to his play, if he were playing for free with no cap hit I would be saying the same thing.

  88. jimmy shaker says:

And these two guys are supposed to be the shutdown tandem on the ice vs the oppositions best players……man that’s scary!!!  Can’t imagine Hammer going up against Crosby and co, or Alex and co.  If that’s the case we better get a hyperbaric chamber for Roman and tell him to live in it except when on the ice.

You know, sitting on my couch last night watching the game made me finally realize something. It’s a perception that has been shot around very often, but I was never able to find the truth in it. Maybe because it involves my favorite team, and I devote so much of my time and life to them. I’ll never know why it took so long, but I can finally say that I’ve figured it out….

They simply are not hockey fans. They have been brainwashed since they were young with the legacy and rich history that this team carries. Not knowing anything about hockey, most expect Stanley Cups every year because they don’t understand how competitive a 30 team league is. They spit out the garbage propaganda that the mainstream media tells you is the truth. Bums on the street barf out more bogus rumors than Eklund. Your neighbor in this city always seems to have more inside information than Bob Mckenzie. Habs fans boo the team and their players constantly, instead of encouraging them when they are trailing 2-1 with 15 minutes left in a game. The team wins one night, and all our players are All-Stars. They lose the next game, and everyone says they aren’t making the playoffs and we should blow up the team. If a goaltender gets a shutout one night, the next day everyone is saying he’s going to win the Vezina. If he loses that same game 1-0, he must be traded immediately because the team for some reason don’t play for him.

It’s really sad people, honestly. On this site, out of hundreds if not thousands of members, maybe 40 of you know what you are talking about and stand by your ideas from day 1 until now. The rest jump ship from day to day just like the whole city, making the media lick their chops. That’s what they want in the end, the more you believe their lies, the more money they make.

In the end I have to stand by my team and cheer them on. I’m not going to switch teams because most Habs fans are clowns who never laced a pair of skates, or understand 2% of professional hockey. But please people, use your brains and learn to STFU when you spit out stupidity and garbage in public or on this site. The latter is the reason why fans of other teams make fun of us, and rightfully call us idiots. If you want that to continue, go ahead and don’t stop.

Good post on the madness, sickness that is hockey fans in Quebec.  It’s the same here in Ontario with Leaf fans but they are a little more polite, or a lot more polite but that is the Toronto way eh, they wear their heart in their underwear where Montrealers are sometimes too passionate and wear their hearts on their sleeves.

I totally understand how others hate the Habs for their fans and I don’t blame them but not all Hab fans are morons ONLY the most visible loud ones.

  100. HabFanSince72 says:

You have reason to say some of the things you do. I bet you, a lot of people would put you in the other 95%. Just the way you worded your thoughts in this post, I would tend to agree with them. Sorry.

  104. bwoar says:

AND at least 4% don’t live in Montreal and are actual hockey fans.  The Game, not just the team.  Something in the water over there makes people all screwy when it comes to hockey.  It’s like having a Viagra I.V….. and getting so constantly pumped up that it’s impossible to exercise good judgement on what to do about this great gift you have!

  105. Brown_Hab_Fan says:

I am so dissapointed in the Montreal fans for booing Price…I swear idiotic fans like that do not deserve a stanlet cup ever! As for 95% of Habs Fans being idiots as was stated below, it’s more like 75% lol… a lot of the good ones aren’t vocal in dumb ways.

Hab fans have to realize the Montreal Canadiens, rich traditions and history, are just another NHL team in a 30 team league run by a salary cap. Quit EXPECTING untarnished success and JUST GO WITH THE FLOW. One of these years, the Habs may just pull a Lightning or Hurricanes or Ducks Stanley Cup win.

  110. Brown_Hab_Fan says:

No but it’s all the idiots who have enough money to fill up the Bell Center to make this team and organization look bad…I swear because of yesterdays “Classy” performance by our fans almost made me never want to watch hockey again

  114. SmartDog says:

    5 QUESTIONS: True or False

    1. Someone needed to crash Ward early. All those shots… like a day on the tennis court for Ward.

    2. Either someone’s out to get him or Carey Price is the unluckiest
    dude in the league.

    3. If you’re Gauthier you have to trade Price.  You’ll get more for him and there’s just something not clicking.

    4. If you’re Gauthier you have to trade Halak.  Price is good and only needs some maturity, and Halak has show he’s a solid #1.

    5. These losses hurt. Big time. But they make the Flyers game tonight – one of the toughest in the league for teams like ours and our playoff nemesis – a real test: win, and the players show (to themselves) they haven’t lost their mojo; lose and it’s written in the sky – we’re sinking slowly like a flat stone.

Not signing or trading Pleks = yet another missed opportunity.

  115. HabFanSince72 says:

    1. True.

    2. $2M a year and more pussy than you can shake a stick at? Not unlucky.

    3. False. You don’t trade a goalie with that kind of potential. Ask Mike Milbury.

    4. Not sure, but you will have to pay him at least $3M a year next year. Can you afford it?

    5. True, if I could understand what I am agreeing with.

  116. j2c says:

    4. If you’re Gauthier you have to trade Halak.  Price is good and only needs some maturity, and Halak has show he’s a solid #1.

That’s What I would look to do. Price is almost as good as Halak (when looking at the numbers) and he is 2 years younger. Price will start winning with this team once they get their groove back. Price is the future we cannot trade a potentially great goalie and someone we drafted 5th overall this would be a bad sign to everyone include our prospects. If I was Martin I would be playing Price in Philly tomorrow, the game last night was not his fault, and I think Martin should play him until the team wins for him. If Martin does that Price will be fine, and perhaps take back the number 1 job. If Martin doesn’t play Price you are just sending him a signal that whatever you do is not good enough, and he will want out at the end of the season.

  117. mrhabby says:

    1. yes, we wwre way to nice.

    2..unlucky. to price being traded.

    4.yes trade halak.

5…yes, we have to come out that what your asking.

  118. SmartDog says:

I can’t tell if you’re standing up or laying down.

Maybe if you take off your shirt I could tell better.

Not signing or trading Pleks = yet another missed opportunity.

  119. HabFanSince72 says:

It only takes 50 or so booers in a crowd of 23,000.

  120. crabvader says:

Carcillo will be out in the Philly game (I think, dunno if it will have been 2 games). He got suspended for a dirty crosscheck. Typical.

I would like for management to take pre-emptive measures and call-up someone like Alex Henry for the game and bench Lappy or something.

We need somebody who will stick up for his mates at this point in the season against a desperation team like Philadelphia.

Henry is no pushover and will drop the gloves if our guys are being pushed around.

We lost two games in a row against these goons because no one was able to answer the bell against Philly. O’Byrne did and got crushed by Laperriere.

I say this again, O’Byrne has not been hitting and that’s a bad sign. He hasn’t been hitting since before the fight and I knew he was lacking confidence.

Bring up Henry and let him lay some knuckle on those goons.

  121. j2c says:

I’m very disappointed in the fans!! They are going to drive out a young goalie that could very well turn into a superstar. I hope Carey doesn’t listen to those stupid fans, and realizes that many still love him and don’t want him gone. I hope he does not demand a trade at the end of the season.

  122. longtimehabsfan says:

It’s the GM’s job to make the right decisions irrespective of what the fans think.  PG will have to decide who goes and who stays and he’d better get value in return for anyone that goes that is not a UFA.  And once again, we’re going down to the wire.  And I don’t want to back in this time.

  123. ManApart says:

I’m sick of all this Price talk. It’s about the team. All I read is poor Carey, how is he gonna handle it, the fans are not nice to him, he should go elsewhere, bad luck Carey, it’s all about Carey. It’s like all the Price worshipers forgot that there is a team here. It’s all about Price and how they can convince the world to see him as they do. It would be worth trading him, just so the rest of us don’t have to hear the constant drivel everyday . In reality I would trade him because Halak makes him expendable, but the fringe benefit that I mentioned would be an added bonus.

  124. ManApart says:

Sorry Aces. Ward overwhelmimg 1st star, Price 3rd. Ward is the story and outplays Price. It’s just how it was. I’m not blaming Price for the loss btw.

  125. crabvader says:

The problem is that we never consistently pressure the opposition’s goaltender, making him look like a freakin’ superstar. We shoot from poor angles and we never go for rebounds.

The goals we do get come from the slot on the rare occasions that we get there OR on a PP (getting rare these days).

It’s only at the end of games where we are losing that our guys get some sort of sense of urgency and start pressuring the netminder and hitting the slot for rebounds.

You can’t just expect Gionta and Darche to be the only ones who hit the net every game.

We have to establish and offensive zone attack too. Too often we squirt in, shoot it against the backboards, lose the puck and go back to square one. That, or we shoot a weak shot on the goaltender, get outmuscled and back to square one again.

So basically, we make the other goaltenders look good. If we could pressure them for 60 minutes the way we do in the last 5 mins when we are losing, it would be a whole other story and I could guarantee you Ward would’ve been pulled.

Peewee goaltenders could’ve stopped half of the inoffensive shots that were thrown at Ward yesterday.

Don’t get me wrong, I give him full marks for 2-3 saves during the game and all of them at the end of the game.

  126. Off-side says:

We’ll be fine. Atlanta can’t continue to play the way they have with their schedule and the Rangers…they’re doomed with the Fonz behind the bench. We’re just in a little offensive slump and our 4 rivals in the hunt for the post season have bigger problems than we do. Friday is a true test. MAB should be in the pressbox and call up PK. He was our best player against them last time around and he’ll give us size, speed on defence, more offensive punch and lighten the mood as well.

if gionta is five inches taller, does he score with that last second shot? ridiculous.  Using size as an excuse is purely stupid.  lets face it, ward played spectacular, cammy is not scoring (missing 20 plus games will do that), pleks isn’t the same player post olympics, hammer looks tired.

the habs gave up 10 shots through two periods.  the other night against buffalo, they dominated except for three minutes.  Finishing is the difference right now.  for one reason or another they are snakebit.  if cammy starts scoring and benny heats back up, this is a different team and the mood on here changes.

  140. derfab says:

SK is the perfect example of what this team is about: Lots of skill, questionable toughness, strength, commitment. He is an accessory, not a main character.

We always run into a “hot goalie”.  The truth is, every goalie is a “hot goalie” when they play the Habs, because we have puny forwards who are easy to move from the front of the net, and almost everyone plays a perimeter game.

I know everybody’s tired of the goaltending soap opera BUT who here is so “sick up and fed” (to quote Cheech Marin) of the neverending Kostitsyn brothers?

    The top questions:

1- Which one is more talented? (Obviously SK cuz JM’s on his butt all the time)

2- Where does AK go when he disappears on the ice?

3- Why the Grabovski fixation with these two?

4- Doesn’t the Great Gazoo come from Belarus too?

5- Why are both still on the team???

  156. HardHabits says:

Because 2003 was the year the Habs missed the boat on a plethora of better players in one pick than both AK and SK combined.

  157. dudurules says:

fans who boo their own team should save their money and stay home… did anyone not learn from the Patrick Roy debacle… you know what, this may sound harsh but i don’t care (i’m in a rant mood) the fans in montreal are the reason why the habs will never A. get a big free agent to sign B. keep a developing goalie long enough to see him flourish and C. win a stanley cup.  there’s a good reason why the cup goes south of the boarder every year… it’s not only the fact that the US has more clubs but it’s the lack of scutiny and pressure these teams have to succeed… sure there’s a few fishbowl clubs (detroit, pittsburgh) but can you honestly tell me that any of these clubs compare to the cdn clubs in terms of fan pressure and influence? NO.

Montreal’s biggest problem is their fans (mainly local).  I saw one game live in Ottawa on Jan 31 (because there’s no way to get tickets at the Bell Centre…) and I had to sit behind three guys from Montreal who booed Price during warmups… why?  Cuz they are spoiled!  These are the people who pay money and have their opinion?  C’mon Jaques! Grow a pair man! BG did some shaky things but he stood behind his players 100%.  You wanna boo Brisebois? Stay home!  I never liked Breezer but you think if I was lucky enough to see a live game in “mecca” Montreal I’d use it up on booig him? Never!

Show some class game goers!  Help your team by supporting them and the players and if you’re not happy with the product, don’t buy it!  I’d give my left arm to be able to sit in your seat at the Bell Centre.  As long as these fans keep scrutinizing, the Montreal Canadiens will never win.

  158. fuhgawz says:

    1) both are talented but neither will ever play that way here its the Montreal Canadiens curse

    2) I think i seen AK trying to take some kids candy last night during one of his so called shifts

    3) I think they are all secret lovers

    4) ?

    5) see 4

  159. Kooch7800 says:

    1. SK –  i hope cause Andrei shows glimpses for periods of time that he can shoot, hit and dangle and then for months at a time you don’t know if he is playing.  If SK is worse we are in real trouble

    2.  Hagning out on St. Catherine street

3.They used to be lovers and now they broke up and there is some tension.

    5. Why are either of them on the team.  MTl should move them for a nice powerforward (not that many teams are that gullable to make that trade though).

  160. smiler2729 says:

C’mon man, the GREAT GAZOO, The Flintstones??? Google it.

  161. fuhgawz says:

oh i know who he is just dont know where is was from

  162. smiley4 says:

I think AK is the better of the two. Hardest wrist shot in the league. Strongest pound for pound player

    maybe in the league.

I am still a Carey Price believer and I love Halak as well. Price’s record reminds me of the baseball pitcher

who is 11-14 with a 2.75 ERA who lacks run support. These things tend to even out over time. Halak has two more years of experience and is farther ahead of the curve in terms of career development. Price needed a mentor(didn’t have one) here in MTL(see Giguere and the Monster in Toronto as an example) in order to develop and wasn’t ready when Huet was traded. And Price lacked maturity and discipline.

Howover, i have a preference for large goalies and Price at 6’3 has a distinct advantage over Halak. They are both good goalies with the abililty to be stars for many years to come.

  163. habsgirl74 says:

very good post, i live in alberta and would love to be able to see a game at the bell center and booing a player would be the last thing on my mind, very very unclassy

  164. homerbowen says:

Over the summer the team must move 2 of the 3 tiny tots. I would prefer it would be Gomez and Gionta but if Camm happened to be 1 that’s OK with me too. Gomez will be tough to move with his salary but perhaps packaged with a goilie it could happen. Last chance for Laps next year or give him the boot.

We know Mara will be gone but so too should be Spacek, Gill and Hammer…clean house at the back end.

Goaltending is great no need to tinker (unless a good trade). Actually, our goal has been outstanding overall this year, we just can’t score goals.

Get rid of Martin and don’t put him anyhere near future player selection. perhaps he can replace the “senator” on the RDS panel.

  165. StevieRay says:

Hey JM.. I got news for you … maybe they were booing YOU !!!.. Must make Price feel real good knowing that his coach won’t go to bat for him … This guy is no ” COACH ” What he should be doing is calling out Gomez/Cammi for there lacklustre play and ” dumb” penalties .. after all are they paid the big bucks to ..produce … especially NOW !! when our backs are to the wall !!!

But no he’d rather mess with Benny’s /SK’s/O’b and Prices head instead of what doing his job …

Did i also forget ” Markov ” he needs a swift kick in the … also !

I thought the Cammi penalty was not his fault. With the new rules  a player just needs to turn and face the boards as soon as they see seomeone coming.

  172. mbplekfan says:

That plan goes a step or two too far but the sentiment is there.

We need to make room for PK next year. Hammer or Spacek or Gorges has to go. Gorges is cheap so he stays. Hammer or Spatch?

We need size up front. Lapierre is playing himself off the team, Darche, Pyatt, Metro, Maxwell etc dont meet the size requirements.

One size large forward in Pouliot. We need another two. Someone has to go from the top lines…Cammy, Gionta, Pleks, AK??

One #1 goalie and a maybe someday…I see price on the move for the big forward.

  173. zooziff says:

“did anyone not learn from the Patrick Roy debacle…”

    Oh dear…

The fans had zero effect on Patrick Roy getting traded. The problem with respect to that was Mario Tremblay leaving Roy in for 9 goals! Get over it already.

Cold weather and the media frenzy mean little here. If that was the case the sunshine teams would be winning the Stanley Cup every year.

Take a look at our first round draft picks over the last decade, that’s a good place to start to see why we had to sign so many free agents last year. I remember hearing a few years ago about how good this team was going to be because we won the Calder Cup and here the Habs are struggling to make the playoffs. I hope PK Subban and Louis Leblanc are special, otherwise we will have to listen to others clamouring that the fans are the reason we stink.

Of course none of the on ice performance has anything to do with drafting, developing, coaching, etc…

Next time I spend $2000 to fly in and see the Habs play I will boo especially for the ignorant, it seems to be the only language they understand.

  174. homerbowen says:

If you play small, you think small and if you think small you should not be in the NHL.

  175. mbplekfan says:

Our complete lack of size up front hinders our ability to score last second goals. The players on the ice know what needs to be done. They just lack the ability to do it.

How does a timeout change that?

  176. dudurules says:

No carpentry skills here… just had it with these constant occurances at home games and just wish my rant was printed and handed out to each ticket holder so they can maybe, just maybe see how lucky they are to have this team in their backyard and perhaps help and cheer them on while they can be heard by the players.  no offense to this site but i’m sure it’s rarely read by players.  Fans at the Bell Centre have the opportunity to actually help and change the outcome by being the 7th man on the ice… instead, they put so much pressure and glue by booing our goalie… our players… it makes me quite upset.

  177. dh says:

Why did JM wait so long to pull the goalie last night? I thought that he would do it at the face off around 1:45…

  178. Bugs says:

There are too many angles from which I could ridicule that statement even more, nevermind the obvious ones like our two smallest forwards winnin the Cup in Joisy and Marty St-Louis still a consistent top-10 player in the league, so I won’t get into it.

I would prefer to play Buffalo in the first….ahead of Pitts, Wash or even Jersey….so I guess we just play our best and let the cards fall where they may.  Buff and Pitts are in their own battle for number 2 seeding with Jersey so we really don’t know how thing will shake out.  IT could be that 7th gets the Sabres….

  180. Bugs says:

Don’t need to dump 4 Ds to make room for ONE.

Lapierre is doing fine; you’re just buying the anti-Max hype right now, but if you stand back and look at his overall play, though his production is down, he is FAR from “playing himself off the team.” As for replacing 4th liners, I don’t see how THAT “size” will affect much.

Maybe we can snap our fingers and get more 1st liners with “size”. Should be that easy, I reckon.

To get a player of that calibre, a lot will be asked in return fersure.

you spend that kind of money to go to cuba for a week and the food or pool is dirty, sure you complain but you don’t go back next year and bitch again…

Tonight Boston and Philadelphia don’t have tough opponents (Panthers and Islanders respectively), but I hope the underdogs pull a Carolina on them and they both lose. I will be watching the Caps beat the Thrashers after I get off work. I am counting on Washington for this one. That and Ovie’s desire to win the Rocket Richard Trophy, he is one down on Sid the Kid and has a game in hand to make up a couple. A hattrick would be preferable.

Cole is a coward and while he does not deserve to get boarded, I am convinces it was a dive on his part. He turned last second.. Think about it, Cammy is not a big guy and Cole is pretty tough… One of those days he will turn himself like that to get a penalty and the other player won’t let up the way cammy did and that will be the end of it.

No matter how much you know your child may deserve this treatment, you know that what is wrong is wrong…And what happened last night was wrong for so many reasons. The guy let in 2 goals, one in which his defenseman ran into him taking away any opportunity to make a save, and the other when Eric Stall (one of the leagues best goalscorers) had about 4 hours to jump on a rebound all alone infront of the net.

If you think it’s ok to boo him for that and not defend him, that ain’t right…

I was counting on the Devils to beat the Flyers and Bruins.  It didn’t happen.  The other night I watched Washington vs. Ottawa.  Washington’s defense looked terrible; their offense is explosive, but if you can get behind their D, you can score.  I’d almost rather face Washington than Buffalo, with the way the Sabres have frustrated us this year.  Playing against Miller would be like playing against Ward last night; we could dominate them all over the ice but still come up short.  A Washington series would be high-tempo, end-to-end, fun.  We probably wouldn’t win it, but I don’t really think we could win a series against any team unless we can raise our game by several levels.

  203. wotever says:

I don’t ONLY watch the Habs play hockey, I watch lots of other games (which helps keep a good/honest perspective and opinion about the Habs). I don’t believe what the media says, I make up my own opinions based on the reality of what I see on the ice.

I don’t do any of that stuff, and that is what puts someone in the 95% category. I just had to rant this morning because of the “fan” reaction on this site , and at the Bell. It’s pathetic, disgusting, and I don’t want to be known as one of those delusional fans.

I’ve played extreamly competitive hockey all my life. I was invited to 2 QMJHL training camps, and got 2 scholarships for American Colleges. I chose not to go, I realize now it was a mistake. So I think I know a good player when I see one, and how teams should/shouldn’t deal with certain situations because I’ve been in similar ones before….

Let’s talk about a goalie that now has nearly as much experience playing in the National Hockey League as some guys who are five years his senior; about a goalie that clearly has all the talent to be among the best in the game, and at times in his young career, has looked like he’d fit in that class; about a goalie that at age 24–two years from now– will be as good if not better than Halak has been for the Canadiens this season. And if you’d like to add fuel to the fire, how much better do you think Halak will be two years down the line than he currently is?

I approached Carey Price directly after the game, and as I neared the young netminder who was shedding his equipment in sheer frustration, he intimated to PR director, Donald Beauchamps, “What am I going to say? I have nothing to say…” Glancing over at an inconsolable Price, I thought: “That’s fair enough.”

I agree with all of the above….

  226. HugeHabsFan says:

I agree with his facts, however I’m not sure how Mr. Engles knows what the future holds for Carey Price (“–two years from now– will be as good if not better than Halak…”).  Or anyone else for that matter.  It’s pure speculation.

……….. “Thank you Cammy for making my day even more amazing!” I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

  227. matraque says:

I honestly think this is over played…

Sure, booing is not funny and it can hurt feelings.  But I would bet that 85% of the booers were booing the TEAM EFFORT, not CAREY PRICE…

Also… if it gets to his head… well thats another problem.

And another thing.  Carey Price should be OWNING the AHL RIGHT NOW.  He does not belong to the NHL currently.

Sergei is the most inspired player we have right now, this is terrible news.

  229. mike g says:

    It’s not really speculation, IMO…

It’s a logical/calculated opinion. Goalies don’t reach their full potential until about 25 or so. He’s 22, and will only get better. He’s not that far behind Jaro’s current goaltending status, so it easy to see that in 2 years he will be better or at least the same…

And if he had normal goal support, he would have as many wins as all the goaltenders that Mr. Engles listed. No goaltender in the world can win 20+ games if his team provides him with less that 2 goals per game. So, Mr. Engles is bang on in his analysis, and shows us why Carey better not be going anywhere at seasons end…

  230. Chris1138 says:

Ditto. I wish he had left the guessing out of the article because its convincing enough without it.

  231. Chorske says:

I don’t think anyone “knows” anything. The point is, an experienced hockey reporter is expressing his frustration at the lack of love for Price. On my end, I think it’s a shame people focus so much on goaltending when there are so many more aspects of the Habs’ game that needs improvement. We have issues; goaltending ain’t one of them.

We used to have a sophisticated fan base that understood hockey. Now we have a bunch of braying idiots who think that paying 200$ entitles you to act like a bully and a moron. I’m more worried about our fickle, entitled, arrogant fandom than I am about our goalies.

  232. HardHabits says:

Of course only Habs fan boo their team. Nobody else does.

This team needs to stop trying to make the playoffs every year with a team that couldn’t win two rounds if it’s life depended on it.

No wonder fans are booing. Management lies to them. They annoint Price, and he sucks and when he doesn’t suck the team couldn’t buy a goal with all of Gomez’ cash. Price gets the boos, but they are directed at managment. He’s their poster boy so he wears the egg on his face.

  233. HardHabits says:

Carey needs to go and Halak too so that the Habs can get a draft lottery pick next season and hopefully a few more after that. There is no Cup on the horizon with anything the Habs have, except goaltending, problem is there is no defense or offense worth getting excited about. Coaching sucks too. I hope the Habs finish 9th because that’s better than getting into the playoffs and getting owned as they’re sure to get.

  234. keepthefaith says:

Yup any REAL FAN hopes their team finished 9th. yup, uh-huh.

  235. Chorske says:

WHO anointed Price, exactly? WE did. Management drafted a goalie in the first round, a goalie with a history of winning, and all they said was that he was the kind of goalie who could develop into a franchise player. They never said, Carey will be flawless and save us and will magically develop faster than goalies normally do and yea, verily He will win us the Cup. The only people saying that are the Jesus Pricers among us. The same thing happened with Latendresse- AT LAST our bona fide power forward AND FRANCOPHONE to boot!!!- and now with Subban – AT LAST our bona fide Orr-like scoring defenseman AND FUTURE CAPTAIN to boot! No pressure there, PK. None at all.

    Management aren’t anointing. WE are.

But I agree that poor Carey is wearing egg. Poor bugger deserves a frakkin medal.

  236. HardHabits says:

No REAL FAN wants a team that just squeeks into the play-offs and gets unceremoniuosly dumped when getting there, only to see the same shit repeat itself year after year. It’s fans like you that make this team shit. You’re the ones who keep pushing them to make the playoffs at all costs. The problem is that cost is no future. It’s fuckers like you that are ruining this team.

  237. keepthefaith says:

yes it is totally me and cousin. We both have RDS subscriptions and if it wasn t for us this team would be great. Thanks for pointing that out.

On a side note  How come you can say fuckers but not shit?

You want to boo the TEAM, you do it in the final seconds of the game and once the final buzzer goes off…

But when the booing stops, and the PA announcer says he’s announcing the 3rd star who is Carey Price and the booing begins again, the fans know 100% who they are booing in that situation…

The 85% of the Carey Price booers are the same 85% who know nothing about hockey. Every Hurricanes and Habs player interviewed yesterday and today said it was utterly ignorant to do what they did..

“These head movies make my eyes rain” -Simple Jack

  241. matraque says:

They did boo the team… probably for the last 4 mins…

Yes, these 50 “fans” are ignorants… What can you do about it?  It’s not like they are going to stop.  The more you talk about them, the better they feel about themselves and they will boo more and louder next time.

  242. mike g says:

    I know they will…

It just pisses me off that it is directly their fault why the Habs can’t attract any star players

“These head movies make my eyes rain” -Simple Jack

  243. matraque says:

    That is not why…

if the team was winning and in the 1 tier of the league, “stars” would come and play here… Fans, media… that has nothing to do with it.  If it’s being mention, it’s because it’s an easy way to not really answer the question when it is asked.

50 – 100 angry fans preventing the team from having star players… come on..

    Komisarek: 0 – 4 – 4 (-9)

  244. mike g says:

50-100 radical fans is way off the actual total…There are thousands of them…

And the media is a huge reason. Look at what Price said last night “WTF am I supposed to tell them?”, because he knows they’re going to try and nail him down to the floor with their trap questions.

The media is the #1 reason why star players don’t come here. They are the most negative group of people you can ever meet, constantly trying to find smoke where there is none. You know this, I know this. When a player signs a 5 year deal here, he has to see those people day in and day out, every single fukkin day he plays here..To deal with that stupidity for absolutely no sane reason causes unwanted and unneeded headaches and problems.

It’s a horrible situation to get involved in, and most players avoid it. Those who don’t realize in the end it’s not worth it. I’ve spoken to guys who’ve played here. They all tell me  basically the same thing:

“To score a goal for the Habs at the Bell Center and win a game is the best feeling a hockey player can feel, but everything else is just nonsense”.

“These head movies make my eyes rain” -Simple Jack

  245. SeriousFan09 says:

I bet Alex Kovalev during a bad season in NY never had himself linked to the Russian mob, or heard that the team couldn’t win because they weren’t “American enough” to do it.

  246. keepthefaith says:

Not a chance.  If you think fans and media have nothing to do with stars coming to play in Montreal you are out of your mind.  Of course it does.  I guess Rick Nash signed huge deal in Columbus cause they win so much? Or Daniel Briere and Ryan Smyth taking less money to go play for teams that are not top contenders? Cmon man gimme a break.

  247. Drive_For_25 says:

Why does he not belong in the NHL right now???  Did you not read his stats?  Better than just “good enough to be around” type stats.  Maybe if the team would have played in front of him all year, we wouldn’t be in this position.

  248. C-Dawg says:

You need to put down the crack pipe…they’ll never attract the “1 tier” stars, because of the way they see the current players treated. The entire Hurricane team commented on how wrong it was for Price to get boo’ed….you think it’ll be forgotten by the players in the league tomorrow, or this summer when free agents are being approached by PG? No way. The only way to get talent to Montreal now is the way Gainey did it, overpay FA’s or make a trade and give up more than you get….it S U C K S but it’s the truth….but hey, at least those “fans” got to feel good about themselves because they got to boo Price last night.

Notice I didn’t say the way we get talent is draft them…..that’s because when we get talent, we boo them, redicule them, and force them out of town, where they become stars like Chelios, LeClair, Ribiero, Latendresse….and soon we’ll be able to add Price to that list.

WOW, just look what PK has to look forward to next year.

  249. Jeff says:

Last nite’s loss was unfortunate, the team lost a very good chance at making the playoffs.

Now, well the Habs just might not make it & the cumulative stomach ulcers of fanatic Habs fans may bring about a medical emergency!  Even if we get a few PO games, stomach ulcers would get worse…

Ease up folks, it is what you see, the Habs are not a contender. You knew that!

As far as Price playing for the Habs any longer…..Yah think????

What game were the dummies watching, he single handedly stopped a few certain goals & they BOO him?

It was not his fault, and that loser coach Martin is a joke. He has never won anything anywhere!

The Habs front office or the Molson owners had better do some serious juggling during the off season or next season is looking pretty bleak too.

Do you think the Russians and Belarus boys are going to suddenly become NHL stars, NOT!

Sorry for the reality check again, but it is what it is…..

Fans are pissed off and frustrated that their loyalty is rewarded with mediocre teams year after year…that lays soley at the feet of the Habs management (Owner & GM) who put this team together…

This is not the Phoenix Coyotes…$20 for tickets and a hotdog to get people in the building…this is the Montreal f#cking Canadiens…greatest hockey franchise ever…You can’t blame the fans for being passionate…if we were winning night after night no one would bitch about the passion of the fans because it would put fear into the hearts of anyone coming into the Bell Center

No reasonable fan expects a Cup every year like the old days…but they should expect a solid organization that fields a contender every year…It’s another year of average…squeeking into the playoffs…

“Vive le col roulé! Le système, C’est le col roulé!”

  255. Chorske says:

They are not being passionate, they are being eejits. I can totally blame the fans for stupidly booing the one player on the ice who was NOT responsible for the loss. I don’t give two shites how much they paid for their ticket or their hot dog. Spending money does not entitle you to behave stupidly.

Let them write letters to the GM. Let them not go to the games (OMG what a effing novel concept- you don’t like the product, don’t buy into it). But booing Price? Total crap. We have crap fans.

The Habs are making me Bi-Polar.

  271. JD_ says:

Just caught the headline: “Leafs To Tweak Jersey Next Season: Report”.

Although the article starts out by stating, “The Maple Leafs will be sporting a new-old look on the ice in the next couple of years, a slightly altered version of their current sweater for next season and a new classic third jersey in the works for 2011-12,” one could be forgiven, based on the proposed new design, for describing the changes as more wholesale in nature.

    Features include:

    (1) After extensive focus group studies, the team is introducing a slightly modified team crest “Toronto Maple Loafs” which it grudgingly gathers better reflects the franchise’s zeitgeist. This change is being strictly confined to the jersey as the organization desperately continues to whittle down warehouses full of “Toronto Maple Leafs” letterhead left over from the Harold Ballard era, a period during which very few people in the Leafs organization dared put anything down on paper.

    (2) The NHL has granted the Leafs exclusive permission to introduce a new “Loser” designation to go along with the “Captain” and “Alternate”. Beginning next season, the player carrying the “L” will be responsible for explaining how “things are looking up for next year” once the Leafs are either mathematically eliminated from the playoffs or by game 50, whichever comes first.

    (3) An insignia commemorating the death of the franchise in 1967 is finally being added. The Leafs organization acknowledges that some recognition of the event was long overdue and that it has already set in motion plans for 2017, the 50th anniversary of the team’s passing.

    (4) A small tribute, in the form of a stitched “27-10”, is being added to the jersey’s right shoulder to honour Darryl Sittler’s 10-point outing against the Boston Bruins on February 20, 1976. The decision arose out of the overwhelming response to the focus group question: “Can you think of anything, anything worth celebrating since the Cup in ’67? Really. Anything will do. Conference final appearances, Doug Gilmour’s 2nd round OT goal in ’93 or, maybe, a Wendel Clark fight you really digged. Take your time but give me something. Anything.”

    (5) A small tribute to Brian Burke, in the form of a stitched “BB” is being added to the jersey’s left shoulder. It’s in his contract.

    (6) A small photographic patch of Brian Burke celebrating with the Stanley Cup after his Anaheim Ducks won it in 2007. It’s also in his contract.

    (7) A handy cup holder. Although seemingly placed awkwardly high, most players polled during the design process noted it would be easier to simply access a straw with their lips than to have to let go of their stick to reach the beverage. Management’s concerns regarding the need for the players to look down to get a refreshing sip were recently alleviated with the introduction of the NHL’s new blindside headshot rule, although players were advised to stop skating and face the boards if they get thirsty.

    (8) In keeping with the more practical nature of the new jersey design, zippered pockets are being added to each upper sleeve. They are designed to snugly hold various knick knacks, including player cellphones, Blackberries, and other handheld electronic devices required for in-game contact with agents during NTC negotations. Jerseys sold to the public will come with a crested blanket and inflatable pillow designed to comfortably interface with ACC seating.

    (9) In a unique, cross-marketing deal, all jerseys come with both a McDonald’s(TM) “$1Off any Angus Third Pounder Sandwich or Extra Value Meal and Tim Horton’s(TM) “$0.49 Donut Offer” coupon-crest sewn on to each of the jersey’s two convenient tear-away lower sleeves.

    (10) Tastefully designed small while tags numbered 1-9 sewn on to the jersey to provide players with referenced descriptions of the new features being introduced to the Leafs jersey next season. The 10th tag is not a sew-on and is included in the picture for descriptive purposes only.

The best hockey city…..the WORST place to play hockey.  Booing Price last night after 2 goals that were not even close to his fault.  LOSERS!!!!  There was only one factor in the game last night…luck.  If Ward didn’t get so lucky early on we would have kept rolling like we were and stomped them with a score like 6-1.  If Price didn’t get unlucky and have a goal go in off his own player, we would have squeaked out a win.  To have them tie the game when the shots are that lopsided is a huge downer and everyone lost their confidence and their energy.  Also, MAB sucks!!!!  Lucky he’s got a good shot otherwise he’d be nowhere near a hockey rink, ever.

  274. HabsFansince49 says:

I must admist I was surprised that Halak didn’t get the call last night, but it wasn’t Price’s fault the team lost. The losers were in front of him.

I also believe that we fans are in the gutter when our 3rd star is booed. Yes, this team seems to lack character when needed, but would you blame them when they have to play in front of goon fans? If I attended last night’s game I would have hung my head low when I left the Centre not because of the lost as much as those dregs of society who call themselves Habs fans.

    Forget the booing.

It’s 50-100 people out of 23,000, who are (1) emotionally overinvolved with the team due to not having a fulfilling life and (2)  lacking in emotional self-control. A play goes well they get happy they cheer. A play turns out bad they get sad they boo.

Think of a baby that goes from crying to laughing to crying as he goes from hungry, to fed, to pooping his diaper. It’s all reflexive. No thought involved.

    I agree!!

I know one of the arguments is “but the fans pay prime dollar for the tickets”….

But listen. How can a goalie win any game when his team only scores 1 goal.

And in the NHL, if you’re team doesn’t score more then 2 goals in a game…. then you’re not gonna have such a great season no matter if we have the re-incarnation of Roy or Dryden or however.

I don’t get how these guys can boo a goaltender who in some of “his losses” (as some would say) he’s been “the guy” keeping the team close in the game.

Way to much attention is given to Price. Way to much booing. Way to much written.

How about looking at the coaching staff’s offensive plan and how the offensive players execute that plan??

But I suppose… it might be too much to ask for some “fans” to think a little deeper then who’s in net.

I’m annoyed by all this crap. I know the argument. “We pay lot’s of money for these tickets”.

Sure. But this guy you’re booing, he can’t score goals and it finished 2-1. The team needs 3 goals to win this game. And that should be considered somewhat of an average total game in and game out to be successful.

I’m a Habs fan. I love my team. I don’t understand anyone who can boo a guy like that. Think a little deeper then who’s in net.

Yeah, and I’m sure Vancouver is gonna love the 24 year old Price when he walks as a Free Agent….why would he want to stick around here after the past couple of years of abuse he’s taken from the MTL media and fans? I’m a lifelong  diehard Habs fan, and I wouldn’t stick around for the kind of abuse he’s taken. He’s rediculed for being “the Chosen One”, when he didn’t ask for that label, or treatment, and wasn’t ready for the level of heat he had to endure learning on the job. I’m a big fan of Bob Gainey, but the worst mistake he made during his tenure as GM was the handling of Price.

things are going well on the scoreboard

  295. MikeMcLaren says:

How are the Canadiens supposed to make the playoffs when the teams competing for that final spot are doing so well and beating the teams they are supposed to beat?

Look at the Flyers, for instance… they’re playing the NY Islanders and the Flyers are… LOSING 3-0 in the first period.

    Have some faith, people!

  296. The Cat says:

JM should have stuck up for his goalie and lashed out at the fans. So what if the fans pay and are entitled to their opinion, its not like Montreal is struggling at the gate. If this kind of behaviour isnt dealt with, itll only get worse.

  297. Harani says:

Leaving for New York soon….Isles already up 3-0 on Philly 10 minutes into the game! And Florida up 1-0 on Boston.

    “I gotta feeling…that tonight’s gonna be a good night!”

  298. keepthefaith says:

I hear ya there!!! Wow there is some normal people left.

  299. HabsFanInVictoria says:

I would agree.  But maybe he’s trying to help Carey by letting him learn how to brush it off, because It’s bound to happen again.  I’ve never been to the Bell Centre, but I can imagine there are some idiots that ruin it for the rest.

  300. wild flower says:

Comparible to the ridicule directed at Price, is the ridicule directed at guys like Hamrlik – both not really warranted. Watch any dman in the league and you will find mistakes. The game is too fast for any of them to be perfect. Guys like Ovechkin, et al would even undress the Big Bird every now and then if he could come back in time to play today’s game. Especially, now that there is a penalty called for any type hooking/grabbing.

In front of the net the other day when the rebound comes of Price’s pad and Stahl fires it home – what is OBryne going to do to take away the quick shot? Cross check him, grab him, slash his stick – maybe he doesn’t score, but OByrne goes to the box and then they score – making the situation just as bad or worse for OByrne – who was already in the box the other day at the end of the game when a critical goal was scored.

Gabriel Dumont named to QMJHL First All Star team!

  304. deuce6 says:

Garbage goals are created from going to the net and getting 2nd and 3rd chances..Tim Kerr and Dave Andrychuk made a living out of it..Not pretty, but they win hockey games..

Our top scorers are “perimter” players..We don’t have enough beef up front to get garbage goals..

  305. Les Habitants says:

    looking good on the scoreboard?

The last time the leafs won the cup it was still just a bowl!!

  306. Brocas Brain says:

People should not be booing Price or Halak.  they should be booing our Defense. Too weak, Too slow, Too old!
Our defense shows ZERO intimidation on that ice and is constantly get out muscled off the puck.

  307. jimmy shaker says:

Check your derwers because I think you just dropped a deuce!!!  Hammer has cost us big time in our last couple of losses, and O’Byrne isn’t ready to play top minutes with Marky.  He’s dragging Marky down and taking way too many penalties.  MAB over these two guys any day of the week my friend.

  308. Ton says:

The league had fast players back than also. Big bird had fits with Gilbert Perrault. Big bird however would leave doubt in the player that once beat him one on one. He hit them hard, I mean hard.  Ask Dornhofer, Statsny, Richard Martin, etc. He also could skate and did not have to hook and grab.

  309. likehoy says:

maybe the players should come out and boo us.

    – Team Halak V.S. Team Price…Montreal Canadiens Fans are similar to 14 year-old Girls going through Puberty.

  310. jimmy shaker says:

Cheers to that….our D has been a big problem I think all year…..not balanced enough IMO.  O’Byrne cannot play with Marky, it drags Marky down and O’Byrne cannot handle the minutes.  Hammer sucks and should be donating his salary to the sick kids or something…..he’s declined so much the last month or so it’s crazy.  I think MAB needs to get back there for O’Byrne and PK should be called up for Hammer.

The ultimate D going forward for next year would be…

By out Hammer and Spacek and keep O’Byrne around as the 7th body.

  311. habs11s says:

Thanks Habs Fans for making me, once again, embarassed to be one…. booing someone that is trying to turn his game around and let in 2 goals that were not his fault… just embarassing….

“How would you like a job where when you made a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?” -Jacques Plante

  312. Eliisa says:

Anyone else following the other games?

Washington over Atlanta 1-0, the same for Florida over Boston and the NYI is beating the Flyers with 4 to zip. This is what I am talking about…

EDIT: Spoke too soon… 1-1 in Washington and the Flyers just got one making it 4-1.

  313. deuce6 says:

MAB a top pairing d-man? lol

Dude, he can’t crack our top 6 back there..MAB stinks on the blueline..His only asset is his shot on the PP and that is becoming useless since teams pressure him when he does have it…

I, for one, can’t wait to see him gone..Taking 4th line minutes away from a player that fits a 4th line role..The reason we have trouble scoring is because we don’t have enough grit and hustle..

  314. habs-hampton says:

I know we are supposed to be patient with PK, but it’s time. He’s ready, and the Habs are ready. Spacek and Hammer are playing too many minutes. PK would also help on the 2nd unit PP.

It’s time for the new era to begin…

  315. deuce6 says:

Big Bird threw the hardest body check I have ever seen..He broke the boards on that Doernhofer hit..What a hip check..

  316. deuce6 says:

If we recalled PK, we lose a full year of eligibility..Besides, I think he has to play in a certain number of games to play in the playoffs unless we are stricken with injuries back there and we have nobody else that is eligible..

  317. jimmy shaker says:

Right, right, right……Another reason JM is one of our worst coach’s ever.  Point out to me the attributes of our D besides Marky…..and you’ll come to the realization for what MAB brings to the table and what he counts towards the cap….he is our 3rd best D-man.  So go ahead and list O”Byrne’s, GIll’s, Hammer’s, Spacek’s and Gorges attributes and then I’ll cut them all down on my reply and show you MAB’s worth not only on the team but on the team as a defender!

    Shake and Bake.

At least we’re not talking about the tenders……that’s a good thing.

  318. HUDSONHAB says:

ON that note I’ll start a rumour. Ryan Parent is an RFA as are Price and Halak. Parent grew up a Habs fan and his Dad is a huge Habs fan. How huge? He cheers for the Habs when his son plays against them. Anyhow, a trade for RFAs makes sense for both teams. AND, the Habs would not have to pay Parent even half as much as they would have to pay for one of those guys to be a back up.

You heard it here first. 😉

  319. rogieshan says:

Both Markov and MAB are pinch-happy. Pairing them together outside of PP time would be a mistake waiting to happen.

I see Subban pairing with Gill. Gorges could be traded as he has a budget-friendly salary. Buying Hammer and Spacek would cost the team over $9 million in real dollars, not to mention the cap hit.

  320. habs-hampton says:

That’s where we miss Metro. We need Darche and ..gulp.. Max to pick up the slack in the dirty areas.

  321. habs-hampton says:

Are you sure? What was the situation last year when Weber was called up?

  322. HUDSONHAB says:

I smell what your cooking. MAB was brought in to spell off Markov, #79 is back, ipso facto… bye bye MAB.

  323. Laramy87 says:

Habs fans are the Bell center are sickening.. Booing Price last nite when he was announced 3rd star, waht the hell? What do you expect him to do… No way he stops either of the two goals he let in last nite. Boo the team. Get of his back… God sometimes i am ashamed to be a habs fan… I would hate to see him go, but at this rate maybe he should go. Then when we see him under his capabilities all the “so-called” habs fans will be eating crow.

  324. topher5468 says:

Im watching the Caps/ Atl game, Caps not playing with any intensity. I didn’t even know OV was playing

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  325. jimmy shaker says:

Wouldn’t hammer cost just  over 2.5 and Spacek just about 4?  Sometimes you just have to cut your losses…..that’s why I have subban up here at a cheap hit, dandy at a cheap hit and MAB at a cheap hit.  Could work…..It will never happen, but that’s what I would like to see.

  326. topher5468 says:

Not getting any love, huh Shaker.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  327. HardHabits says:

I figured out what’s wrong with the team. It is the fans. Not the fans for booing Price or for supposedly running Roy out of town. I was there with the pitchforks BTW. No it’s the fans who keep thinking that any Habs team is equal to all those great Habs teams of the past. The truth is the Habs are nothing like that once in the past team of lore and history. Fans like all of you who keep saying “once we make the playoffs anything can happen” fans who think making it in at 8th is good enough, fans who believe that a crap team can win it all with another Patrick Roy moment. I don’t see a rebuild happen and the hodge pdoge smurf crew isn’t the foundation to build a team, unless of course you add a Stamkos, Tavares or Hall/Sequin or two to the mix. The last great rebuild with this team was between 86 and 89, unfortunately it ended up with loss in the finals, but that 1989 team was the best Habs team since the 70’s and no team, not even the 93 team was better since. The team is just the same team we’ve had for the past 17 years, the names have changed but the players reamin the same. Its you FANS!!! You who keep pushing the Habs to make the playoffs every year. Who accept the trades that mortgage our future for the hope of making a last ditch effort improvement for today. Its the Fans who say, “it’ll never happen” when it is suggested to start going for high draft picks, for NOT saying we’re a few tweaks away from winning a Cup. My ass a few tweaks. Like we’re a few line combos away too. Of the 8 best teams in the league right now, Pittsburgh, Pheonix, Washington and Chicago all have young stars on them, add Colorado and LA to the bunch and you see where the league is going. Mark my words. The Bruins will play in a Cup final before the Habs even make the 3rd round.

  328. Eliisa says:

Agreed. Which is surprising, he needs to get a goal or four. Hopefully they come back big in the third. This is not the exciting Washington team I am used to watching. I thought this was in the bag for sure.

  329. jimmy shaker says:

Ya Markov is back, but Hammer and Spacek were the ones who were supposed to help out on the PP this year but we all know that hasn’t happened……SO tell the chef to take back whatever you and deuce dropper ordered because it stinks!!!!

  330. Tis Himself says:

The bottom line is that until they tank, they will always be rank!

  331. topher5468 says:

I can’t figure it. I guess Atl is fighting for something, Wash, not so much right now. Colby Armstrong should have been gone for that hit to the head, I bet he gets at least a game from Colin Campbell, because of the new rule

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  332. jimmy shaker says:

Nope, not really……just trying to enlighten these guys on the skill or lack there of it with our D.  I think these guys can’t see the bigger picture here, or just like the status quo!  What can you do?

  333. punkster says:

No. Pull a tank, draw a blank. Let’s not go down this spiral again please.

  334. topher5468 says:

I agree, our D is not getting it done, They can share some blame with our Offense. At least its not our goaltending, I was getting tired of that theme.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  335. Tis Himself says:

Dave, this team is just stuck in a vortex of abject suckitude and will never get out of it without an act of God or a good ole tanking. What pisses me off is that just like last season a bunch of injured players return and a solid winning streak is derailed. April 10th is gonna be a huge game!

  336. jimmy shaker says:

He has to play more than 9 regular season games to lose  his eligibility…..

  337. punkster says:

    On The Other Hand:

Bitch and moan, whine and complain, weep and blubber all you want. This is the way of the NHL in the age of Bettman. Only one team has ever conciously tanked for a brief period to obtain a high pick and that team was dead in the water to begin with. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good shit disturbing HH. Build your tanking theory around the “facts” that this team is full of smurfs, that the fans are part of the problem or that the Habs have some divine right to a Cup.

Hard work, dedication, goaltending and talent win Cups. We are sorely lacking in the first two, we are outstanding in the third, and we are getting close in the fourth element. Tanking, at any time, will not solve anything.

  338. rogieshan says:

Hammer is $5.5 (last year of contract) and Spacek is $3.83 (2 more years).

I can see Gauthier wanting to revamp the Defense. What about trading Markov to TBay for Lecavalier? (Remember a similar deal the Habs made 8 years ago – Chelios for Savard?).

  339. HardHabits says:

It’s true Dave. I know you don’t believe it and you want the Habs to win the Cup but wishing doesn’t make it so. I’ll admit I was seduced by that mini win streak, but the truth is the team hasn’t the gas in the tank to last 4 rounds of NHL playoff hockey. The team is built to wilt. Forget tanking, it’s really about building, like my past building blocks were trying to suggest. It’s always the same Groundhog Day with this team. What? Build a team with pick 16-20 ad nauseum? It’s not going to bring a contender. Just the same endless loop.

if <Habs make playoffs in 8th>
      do lose 1st round;
      do lose 2nd round;

    while <out of playoffs>
      do get a crappy pick;

    for <17 years> from <1993> to <n=2010> by <never getting past 2nd round>
      do not draft high;

    function <medicore team>(<no 50 goal scorers>)
      do not draft well;
      return make playoffs at 8th place;

  340. RetroMikey says:

I’ll predict Toronto to play in the Cup final before we ever do.  This team ain’t going anywhere now or in the future.

Will I be excited if this team makes it in the playoffs?  Definitely not, cause I know they’re going to start playing golf a week and a half later.

Way to go Bobby and Pierre Boivin the 6 year plan has been a success!

Somehow I sense I’m going to get bashed on this site, but hey, RetroMikey is being honest and tells it like it is!

“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “

  341. keepthefaith says:

Now you are partially right.  Do you think it would have been acceptable for Gainey to come here, finish dead last for five or six years to rebuild?  No dont f in think so.  So you are right that the fans will not accept a rebuild here. ( which is in no way guaranteeing a cup by the way).  So what is he supposed to do.  He put together what he thought was the best team he could at the time. (debatable but whatever).  It is not Gainey s fault that there is a salary cap, its not his fault the taxes are higher in montreal , its not his fault that the media here turns everything mole-hill into a mountain. Its not like the glory days boys sorry , time to move on. The league is diluted in the talent department and you have to get lucky that one or your draft picks or role players turns into a star while they are still cheap.  We live in the world of one good year gets you million s and millions and we have lost players because of it.  The fact that i still cheer for the team and want them to make the playoffs doesnt mean i am ruining the team.  Last time i checked gainey , PG, or the Molsons were not returning my calls on the line up selection.

  342. punkster says:

Hey, I don’t disagree with your view of the team and you know that. The word suck itself is belittled when applied to this team. They removed the Habs team pic from the dictionary under the word suck because it’s just not enough. But tanking is no answer. That’s where we part ways. (of course over a few Belgians the roads will most definitely merge :)

  343. jimmy shaker says:

I don’t think I want Vinny anymore…….I’ll keep Marky……Seems like Vinny is slowly fading away, or maybe he’s still hurt or something……So on a buyout we have to pay half of the salary right?  So that would make hammer 2.75 and Jaro 3.83 totalling 6.58 mill right?

I still don’t know why they traded for savard…. I hated that trade!

  344. punkster says:

David, I will always say “pfffft” to tanking.

(much deleted garbage used to be found in this space but the writer simply has no stomach for this whole argument again)

Oh crap, this bores me to tears. I have better things to do tonight.

I’ll catch up with you and Brian tomorrow or Saturday.

  345. Tis Himself says:

Watching the Leafs up 3-2 against the Sabres. This team, if they had it at the beginning of the season, would have made the playoffs. They may not be the most talented squad in the League, but they bust their asses and try. Say what you want about Burke and Wilson. They would not put up with the half-assed effort JM and PG get from the Habs.

  346. avatar_58 says:

There are also less than 9 games left. Time to make a choice – go for it or give up.

  347. keepthefaith says:

  349. rated_R says:

    loollllll yes brilliant!! c++

  350. forskis says:

Considering that your pre-season prediction was that the Leafs as they were pre-blockbuster was supposed to be better than the Habs THIS SEASON and that even if they did not make the playoffs, they would still finish above the Habs did not pan out (funny that you do not mention that) despite your repeated “bet on it”, “count on it”, “I guarantee it” and “that’s a fact”…your prediction of a Cup final for the Leafs before the Habs is just as murky…now if you predict that the current Leafs will finish above the Habs next season – THAT I can believe….but hey, playing well NOW when the games mean nothing really does mean nothing at all about the quality of the team, just like if the current Habs make the playoffs it means nothing about the quality of the Habs (according to you).

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  351. jimmy shaker says:

But what makes it the most right with what we have to work with is MAB!!

  352. HardHabits says:

Interesting point about the returning injured players deja vu. Both MAB and Cammy have been defensive liabilities and it seems to have caught on.

  353. RetroMikey says:

Where does honesty get you on this site?  I’ve made honest comments and Habs fans like you are emotinally hurt when I criticize the team.  grab a kleenex then.  You’ll need it if the teams makes the plays and a bye bye first round exit.

“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “

  354. RetroMikey says:

Thank you!!!!! Someone finally agrees with me and is being honest and gives credit where it’s due!

And tells it like it is!  My kind of hockey fan who is not one sided and is fair to  praise or criticize our team or other teams.

“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “

  355. RetroMikey says:

Oh please forskis.  Don’t bring up my preseason prediction.

Always making comparisons with the Maple Leafs.

I’d worry about where our team is headed than the Leafs, what have we accomplished?

Leafs will be out of the playoffs again, while we may make it and then there will be a role reversal.

Leafs will be making the playoffs in the near future while we will back to square one like the late 90’s and not make the playoffs.

What goes around, comes around as they say.

“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “

  356. HardHabits says:

Of course not. Pointing other team’s successes and our team’s failures supposedly makes us not real fans. Why? For seeing things as they are and not as how those would like them to be.

The big flaw in Burke’s plan is giving up those picks for Kessel. If Burke gets around that he’s a genius. His USA Olympics team wasn’t so shabby IMO so he knows his stuff. That was probably the best USA team I have ever seen, even better than the 1996 World Cup team and certainly better than the 2002 Olympic team. Tell me everybody wasn’t shitting bricks for that OT period, even though we had that great team we iced. It’s nice to “we” for a winner. Thanks Team Canada. Screw you Jack Todd.

  357. SeriousFan09 says:

Wilson is no better a playoff coach than JM is for one thing, he alienates his players and it ends in him losing his job sooner or later. Leafs are always like this when they’ve basically been eliminated from the playoffs.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  358. forskis says:

In all fairness it should be brought up because when you made those statements, obviously it annoyed a few (inlcuding me), you stated it was the truth and “the truth hurts” about the quality of the Leafs vs. the Habs (I do agree that their D SHOULD have been better given what was on paper)…you were wrong and the Leafs surprisingly disappointed and you were 100% sure about it, so we should bring it up if you are making another “this is the truth”, 100% guarantee about the playoffs and next season.  But like I said, I do agree with you that Leafs will be much better next season and SHOULD make the playoffs, but whether they will be better than the Habs, we really have no idea.

You ask what the Habs have accomplished…not much really, they have a team good enough to make the playoffs but not succeed in them.  The Leafs may look like they have done a lot, but they are performing well when the games mean nothing to them, plus they have the added incentive of playing well so that the B’s do not draft high.  They do not have the incentive of playing for jobs next season…those good young players are guaranteed spots since there are no other players to fill the spots with anyway.  Carolina was in the same spot as the Leafs…suck for the first half, and play much better in the 2nd half and they are not undergoing a re-build and only traded a couple of players…

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  359. forskis says:

The problem with any discussion is that we act like Republicans and Democrats…those who agree with you (or whomever) see the truth and are not rose-colored glasses and are fair vs. refuse to see the truth and have below average expectations; CONVERSELY, those who do not agree are “not real fans” and have no faith vs. keeping the faith, always believing…we probably should all just shut up and never ever discuss the team because polarizing is BAD.

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  360. Chorske says:

Yeah, I know, the idea about letters to the GM sucked. But I think the one about refusing the buy team schwag until the team hits the second round is not necessarily a bad one.

Also- you can’t really deny that Habs fans have gotten suckier over the years. Call me a dinosaur, but I contrast my most recent experience- which featured braying for any old reason and an end-of-game fight in the stands with drunken twentysomething fans dumping beer on each other- with my experiences catching games when I was in my 20s, when many of the folks in the stands wore suits and the fans caught offsides before the refs did… and would give opposing stars their due if they made a nice play, or played a good game.

  361. keepthefaith says:

Totally agree.  Habs “fans ” are now shit.  From first to worst in a couple of years.  However there is still a lot of great fans, just most of them stay away from here because of all the “fans” who love to see us fail.

  362. coachdoug says:

I think I stated that I thought booing Price was classless…they really need to boo the guys in front of him more than anything…

Letters to the GM?  You are kidding right?  We have some crap fans but most Habs fans are not happy with the teams this organization has put on the ice…that does not make them crap…If you want crap…the Habs management has been crap…

What’s it like when your team knows from about Christmas that they’re going to be done after 82 games. I guess at least they get a lot of golf clubs for Christmas.

By the way, is that an airplane on your mask or a turd?

Not signing or trading Pleks = yet another missed opportunity.

  367. HFX-HabFan says:

  368. topher5468 says:

Detroits Thomas Holmstrom scored a great goal tonight, I cant even remember the Habs scoring a goal like that. Thats what this team needs. A POWER FORWARD.

By the way, if the Habs don’t make the playoffs when Atlanta has no Kovolchuk, Philly has to play their number 3 goalie down the stretch and Boston is without their number 1 center, then this edition of the Habs is even worst that I thougth.

  370. mr.a. says:

noskill gill is right. no way should the fans have booed price when he was announced as the third star of the game. they should have booed him for the mostly lousy year he’s had, and for his brutal incompetence. oh, but wait, has gill ever earned  a star this year?REPLACE GILL WITH PK TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!

  371. says:

Actually Gill is a major penalty killer and I appreciate that in him.  The Ol guy can stay and maybe show off his Stanley Cup Ring to the others.

    Thanks for your opinion.

    They call me Shane

  372. badbalance says:

You don’t understand how many times Gill has saved us and made a key defensive play, maybe you just watch the replay on of the goals and don’t watch the games at all if you say that. What pisses me off thogh, is when hamr gets the puck in his end on the boards. He just stands there for some reason and waits for the opponent to charge him and take the puck away, I always have to yell at the TV when he does that it’s getting old, I mean, 2 of our players standing around. He just spaces out…  At   least Gill tries to make a pass.

If my memory serves me, Gill was on the ice in the final minute of Game 7 as the Pens tried to hold on to the one-goal lead. You don’t suck when your coach puts you on the ice with the stakes that large!

  374. says:

Yeah I remember that as well.  I was saying to myself “what on earth is he doing out there”……winning!  I can respect that for sure.  He’s all about the dressing room and PK, every team needs that.

  375. Tis Himself says:

At the very least, Gill is a good guy and he was spot on with his comments about the fans booing Price last night.

  379. Tis Himself says:

He essentially said that the people that booed Price were out to lunch. Of all the guys on the squad, Price showed up to play last night.

  380. Tis Himself says:

The guys on Team 990 were all over the booing of Price for the entire day.

  381. andrewberkshire says:

Good for Gill, showing true leadership, standing up for his teammates. Martin on the other hand, is a gutless puke.

  382. mr.a. says:

do you also remember that fleury had to make a big time save in the last second of the game to win the game and the cup? all this happening with gill on the ice (as you claim, i don’t remember if he was on the ice). gill was lucky to be on an extremely talented team that made up for all his deficiencies.

  383. Tis Himself says:

I can’t stand JM. He couldn’t coax a turd from an incontinent dog’s bum. I think he is a Lou Costello impersonator in search of faux Bud Abbott. The problem is that Boucher is the future coach of the Habs, but I don’t want to see him rushed only to fly into the flames with this roster.

  384. Tis Himself says:

I remember the save vividly, but if the coach didn’t have confidence in Gill, he would not have been on the ice in the final minute. Think about how many guys were lucky to be on the Habs in ’86 and ’93? In the end, the only thing fans remember is the Cup, not the luck.

  385. ooder says:

  388. krob1000 says:

as long as the Habs continue to get results like this on off days it won’t matter if we actually win again! Atl loss, Philly loss and Boston loss! woohoo!!

  389. topher5468 says:

As much as I sometimes think that we don’t deserve to make it, Neither does the stinky ass Bruins. Atl played tough tonight. Wash only had 14 shots on goal going into the third. Then Wash showed up and took it to them. Good for us ,I guess

I was so mad after last nights game that I couldn’t come on here or even go on TSN, I had to resort to ESPN because they have no hockey talk. But tonight was a good night, everyone lost. Back to square one. Tomorrow’s night vs Philly is huge, man I watched hilights of the Islanders goal, most were lucky breaks, I hope we got some of those tomorrow. Philly has some major goalie issue’s if we come out the same way we did vs the Canes we’ll be good. As for people booing Price, shame on you, If a player has a bad game fine, but he gave us a chance in the 3rd with all our give aways. I think now I know why people don’t want to come play here, we ruin players.

  402. badbalance says:

Well if we get stuck wit halak on the team for the future, im going to stop watching the Habs in general. Wont be exciting watchign us beat bad teams and Halak choking to good teams, just like all season with the exception of like 1 or 2 games…

  403. badbalance says:

3 more wins now to make the playoffs! ATL loses!

  404. forskis says:

Tomorrow night, the Habs are going to have to pound the net and take up space around the Flyers’ net…it did not look like the Flyers D were trying to clear space…and a lot of the goals was just a question of putting the puck on net.  No matter what, the Habs have to play as hard tomorrow as they did yesterday for 40 minutes…plus beware a bunch of angry Flyers since that was a home game for them tonight.

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  405. Storm Man says:

Who is going to do that Lappy

  406. MikeMcLaren says:

Well, the way I see it – this is a win-win situation for me.

Obviously if the Habs win, that gives them a huge leg up on the rest of the teams for the playoff hunt – it’s always great to see a win in person, and the three Flyers fans I’m going with will be all bummed out.

If the Flyers win, I have way less of a chance of being a victim of a “random” act of violence from those savages that call themselves Flyers fans. <grin>

Of course, I will be wearing my jersey.

  407. Habitant in Surrey says:

…the Silent Majority of Habs’ Fans are on average great passionate
Fans …knowledgable ?. yes, but being a ‘knowledgable hockey fan’ is
not exclusive to Habs’ Fans …I think We were at one time, but with the
internet the Dolts have a platform and networking and this spills over
to what behavior You are finding in the Bell Centre

    …it’s an
interesting phenomenon how self-entitled many Habs Fans are …when they
take it for granted the Players are but numbers and serfs they can
degrade and treat without respect …above common-sense, respect and
mutual humanity …most of Our Idiots not considering if they were
treated in such a way in their family, employment or professional lives
they themselves would tell their tormenters to stick their organs in
    physically difficult places

    …ironically, most of these Donkeys
never personally witnessed a Habs’ Stanley Cup, and if they did were
likely very young …even I Who has been around a long time as a Habs’
Fan, have never fantasized or pretended My Fandom has had any influence
on the 15+ Cups I have been lucky-enough to witness, except to have had a
communal privilege to ENCOURAGE and fortunately reaped vicarious
satisfaction of ‘feeling like a winner’ on the coat-tails of
People/Players/Management/Ownership I hardly personally knew, with few
    exceptions, in My day-to-day ‘reality’

…We were born in a great city and province (the birthplace of
the game) and lucky to have had great ownership, management and Players
…the success and satisfaction We had like I said was completely on the
coat-tails of people We took into Our Hearts

    …the Habs are 100
years young …We have been extremely good and lucky to have won the
Stanley Cup in 24 of those 100 …which also means We lost or did NOT
win 76 of the Cups we competed for …more than a few of those 76 years were
near-death years surviving as a franchise, almost empty of talent on
the ice, led by near incompetent management …today We are closer to
Our better years than to the worst …yet it’s a frustrating era to be a
Habs Fan …mediocrity ain’t easy whether You are a young or older Habs
Fan …there are Players ALL of Us justly have a right to make Our
feelings known when They ain’t earnin’ Their pay

    …BUT …IF We
really are PROUD of the Crest, the Legacy, and care for the best
interests of makin’ Our Team winners again …it ain’t gonna ever be
realized if We act like shite-headed Losers

    …Respect works BOTH
ways …the Silent Majority of Habs’ Fans are proud and passionate …I
hope the ‘silent’ will start speakin’ and standin’ up to the Donkeys
that ‘think’ they are fans, but really are hurting Our Team and
    embarrasing Us

…IF that can happen …THEN, maybe, We may recover that reputation We

I just don’t feel like this team has the cohesiveness to win. Not sure what’s missing exactly (I mean we all know what’s missing but…) but I think it’s that iconic forward that always LOOKs dangerous.  We do have guys that are pretty dangerous… but none of them looks it.

Yeah, I know that’s not scientific.  Thank God Carey got rid of the red pads at least.  Why does it take people so long to listen to me?

Maybe cowboy Pricey should emerge once again? I am not superstitious but I noticed the biker-hardass-Carey has gone into hiding recently and his success with that mask on wasn’t as great. Were you calling for the red pads to be tossed?

  418. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

Ottawa Senators clinch a playoff spot.

The three spots that are left currently belong to Philadelphia, Montreal and Boston.

    Boston can’t score – Philly doesn’t have a goalie.

Why can’t Montreal take advantage of this? Or are they purposely aiming to stay in 8th place because they had a 2-1-1 record against the Capitals this year?

    Dun-dun-dun…the suspense continues.

Oh, and Montreal’s back in 7th place (because Boston lost and they have less wins than Les Habs)

Anyway I am sure Price can look past it, just like many of the fans have looked past the fact he flipped the middle finger during a game to all Hab fans in the playoffs last year.

  422. Xtrahabsfan says:

I bet Philly is wishing they would’ve taken the offer from BG for Halak now. Hawks and Flyers will fight over our goalies come summer time. Man, is tomorow ever a big game. 3 goals, just get 3 and we should win. Though 5 would be better

If the coaching staff is doing a half decent job, they should study tonight’s game and find out how NYI can score 6 goals against the Philly. More and more I am not satisfied with our offensive system, be it for PP or 5 on 5. What did they do during the practice? As Gionta said, we need to create more traffics in front of their goalie.

  435. habs001 says:

we are tied now for 22th most goals scored…5-5 we are the worst team in the nhl…the overall forward talent level on this team is very average…the good news is we are in most games…there have been so many games that we have won that we could have lost and the reverse is true also…

Too many people think they know everything about hockey, it seems as if everyone has become a goalie coach all of sudden.  Specially on this site, way to many disrespectful people. This site two years ago was a real treat to go to, repectful agurments, and it’s just a bunch of post of people insulting one another for having different idea’s.

  440. HABWARRIOR says:

the talent on the team is better than very average….it is Good i’d say.If i were to letter grade it i’d give it a “B”.The team just needs to play better as a unit more conssistently.

  441. twocents says:

Brian, I know this is off the current topic, but regarding the loafs, they seem to be playing hard and are doing alright, but that’s because they are out of it. There is no pressure on them and they are loose. Nothing is expected of them and everyone takes them lightly. Their recent play does not change the fact that they have a pathetic bunch of forwards. There is simply no way around that. Unless changes are made, things will be better next year, but not a whole bunch. When Mikhail Grabovski is essentially your number centre you’ve got a mighty deep hole to climb out of. I’ll give them credit if they play well when their games matter to them.

  442. habs03 says:

  446. HABWARRIOR says:

F***** we gotta cheer on the team and support it not BOOOO ’em.Its not ok to boo ur own players.Look at Patrick Roy…….bad game, boooing by fans, gets run out of town traded to Avs…..later that season Roy wins cup,Thanks fans of Montreal.

  449. light_n_tasty says:

  455. HABWARRIOR says:

You want results you look at numbers you look at numbers you look at stats you look at goals for that we’ve scored with halak vs price in net and you can bet thats why halaks record looks much more impressive than that of price.

  456. Tis Himself says:

It’s easy to rag on the Leafs, but I don’t really buy that they win because teams take them lightly. They give an honest level of effort that is generally lacking from the Habs. Hell, everyone in the NHL wants to play Montreal because they know it will be a walk in the park. Who in God’s name on that team would you be scared to play against? Come on, they’re a bunch of pussies for the most part and the whole damn League recognizes it. I love how people ragged on Brian Burke, but let’s look at the facts. The “god” Bob Gainey is gone and Burke with Wilson behind the bench came damn close to winning the Olympic gold medal in Canada with a team no one expected to gel. We’ll see what happens on April 10. That game will likely matter to both sides and I expect the Leafs will come to play. The Habs? I honestly don’t know.

  457. Hammer says:

As a 45 year fan of the Habs the treatment of CP last night is well below the bar. Whether one cheers for Halak or CP is not the point, the point is Price did not deserve it at all. The knuckledraggers who booed him will be the same ones Shi##ing on Mgmt when he is traded and ends up on a Stanley cup winner. I have seen great habs teams and good habs teams and this one is neither. To lay the blame on a 22 yr old kid is CHICKEN S##T at best. One thing about BG he would never let the fans get away with this. He had the clout to call them out. When are folks going to get it, the NHL is all about parity, and mediocrity. You have to stink for nearly a decade to accumulate enough draft picks to become upper tier. Examples, Pitts, Wash, Chic. the Habs fans will never stand for this, so shutup to those that want to ride a kid out of town and enjoy the mediocrity.

I wasn’t taking about the Habs. And, I definitely wasn’t talking about the Olympics. I was talking about the leafs. And I am not ragging on them. It’s just a fact that they do not have an NHL group of forwards. And, I disagree that you can a judge a team’s effort when their games are meaningless. Every year a few teams that are out of it, start playing spoiler. And when they are, everyone says they are really giving an honest effort. Sure they are, but that’s lot easier when your loose. For many of these teams, when the next season rolls around things are quite as easy as they seemed in early spring.

Like I said, they come out next year and win games when they actually matter and I’ll give them props then.

  471. Habsfan_jay says:

    Philly lost too!

That goat I sacrificed last night totally worked!

  472. ABHabsfan says:

I don’t think Price or any goalie for that matter can be said to be losing games. That has to be the dumbest stat in the NHL; goalie’s W-L record. Lots of goalies win games that are no thanks to them, and plenty more lose games because their team can’t score. W-L is not an accurate depiction of the quality of the goalie. Look at Chi this year. Or look at Luongo’s career, I can’t quote the “stat” but I would quess he has way more losses than wins, having played in Fla so long and Isles before that. A good, quality goalie gives his team a chance to win every night. Scoring goals is what wins games, this is not new.

The 6th through 8th positions in the EASTERN CONFERENCE have and remain a joke.  Will the HABS (and BRUINS) make it, likely since ATLANTA has the misfortune of games with CAPSx1 and PENSx2 in their final four.  I recognize a fluke is always possible, usually that needs divine intervention.  On this holy evening and weekend that’s as close to blasphemy needed.

Midget FWDs and weak DEF don’t make for a contender.  I am one of those fans who is grateful we have two very good, and young goalies.

BTW FAN590 in Toronto was discussing a likely trade of VINNY in the summer.  Seems TB is unwilling (unable?) to pay his annual salary for what he gives in return.  Hmmmmm….

What makes Patrick Roy better than Brodeur are his 3 Conn Smythe Trophies, but what comes in 2nd is that he did what he did having played in Montreal for 10 years!

Just got in from seeing the Bulldogs beat the Marlies 3-2 in regulation, goals by Ryan White, David Desharnais and an EN goal by J.T. Wyman won the day to put the Bulldogs into their 50th win, setting a new franchise record as they quest for more. I had 3rd-row seats on the Home side of the ice so I had a pretty good view of the action.

Subban had no points, but he was a very positive prescence in the game, very good moves in the offensive zone, good skating and he knows how to handle a spinning puck. He fell down and it led to a breakaway for the Marlies, but a lot of players fell down on that Hamilton ice surface and the breakaway came to nothing. I remember him standing up on the bench during a penalty kill and just wanting to be in there, he was hungry for it and that’s the kind of desire you like to see from young players, but Boucher did not give him the tap. At the end of the game, he was very positive as they announced the win, tapping heads with his fellows and raising his stick in triumph, he’s a natural for Montreal next year.

Cedrick Desjardins, he’s got a great prescence around the net, makes the desperation saves and never gives up on the puck but honestly, I think Guy Boucher was probably ready to tie a 4′ rope to Cedrick to keep him from playing the puck, it’s not his strength and I haven’t been that nervous about a goalie playing the puck since TheOpenDoor left town. He will need to correct that area of his game or simply allow his skaters to do it for him, If a goalie goes in the off-season, I wouldn’t feel comfortable about having him in backup, NHL speed would destroy him if he played the puck like he does now. He made a number of great saves throughout the game though and earned 1st Star honours.

David Desharnais had the best goal of the game, he nimbly slipped around a Marlies player and was in the prescence of being boxed in by 3 of them when he snapped the puck off and it bounced off the Marlies goalie blocker side into the net. Very slick skater and was named the Flamboro Downs Workhorse of the game, he is now 3 points away from tying the franchise record for points in a season.

Pacioretty was back in and teamed up with his old Michigan ally Aaron Palushaj, Ryan White centred them and they were basically Guy Boucher’s designated **** disturbers. They played hard across the entire ice surface and generated many good scoring chances that they couldn’t cash in on as a group, White did deflect a goal into the net on a Dogs PP though. Guy Boucher knew how to control the tempo of the game by using these guys when he needed to shift momentum.

I like the idea of Boucher behind the Canadiens bench more and more after watching a strongly coordinated team play for a full 3 periods. They cleared the net of pucks far more effectively than just about any game I’ve seen Montreal play all season and were good in PK, PP and 5-on-5 situations.

  488. BKAK72 says:

I don’t buy those rumours either when coming out of Montreal.  Jim Kelly on the FAN590 said that VINNY will be on the block this summer as TB needs to unload the contract.  As you might expect MTL was on that list although he doubts VINNY has any interest in the pressure to play in his home province.  The likely candidate is any team that budgets to the minimum.

If it does come down to that game and the Habs lose, it still won’t prove much about the leafs. The game won’t matter to them the same way it will to Montreal. That’s an easy one for them to get psyched up for and play loose edgy hockey. It that happens it will prove more about the Habs. That they are a sad bunch.

The leafs won that game 3 years ago and they still continued to suck for the past three years.

If they started the season with their current team. I agree they would be further ahead than they are now. Playoffs? I doubt it. But, I bet they wouldn’t have the second worst record in the whole league.

I am sorry , i cannot argue with this avatar. Its been a slice, we finally found common ground. Montreal Canadiens Boobs.

  509. Big Bird says:

Couple of cents from the peanut gallery:

    (1) Some may argue that NHL players make millions of dollars so they (i.e. Price) should suck it up if they get booed.  Part of me doesn’t disagree with that.  The problem is Price played well last night and had no chance on those goals.

    (2) What kind of message does it send to a player that the fans will boo him even if he plays well enough to get 3rd star of the game.  What kind of message does it send to other players who are potential UFAs about coming to Montreal?  It’s not like we have freezing weather, a bad tax system, rabid media and language issues….ummm…wait a minute we do.

    (3) The Habs haven’t played well of late and it’s concerning.  I thought they would get on a bit of roll.  Frankly, I’d rather they didn’t make the playoffs.  I wish Gauthier had a fire sale at the trade deadline.  Why?  Because I’m tired of this team struggling for the playoffs and then getting knocked out in the 1st or 2nd round.  Build this team through the draft and stockpile high picks.  Constant mediocrity isn’t success.  My one criticism of Bob Gainey is that he let all those players go for nothing as UFAs over the years.

    (4) I have no doubts that Carey Price will be a winner in this league.  I’m just skeptical it will be with Montreal.  We (the fans) ran Patrick Roy out of town despite him winning us (single-handedly) two Stanley Cups.  And now the best goaltending prospect we’ve had in years is being run out of town also.  Sad.

    (5) The one hope I have is that we have a lot of talented young players in the system and a strong future coach in Guy Boucher.  I’m resetting the clock and hoping in 5 years we have a good team.  By then Gomez’s contract will be over and we’ll have a good core group of players.  Jeez I sound like a Leafs fan.  Le Sigh…

    3) Once again ,not enough size on the team for a true contender…..Do you see 1st line centers in the N.B.A.that are 6’?

4)Would you be sad if he was replaced with Cam Ward?

    5)FIVE MORE YEARS…..F*** THAT!lol

  511. MikeMcLaren says:

” Frankly, I’d rather they didn’t make the playoffs.  I wish Gauthier had a fire sale at the trade deadline.  Why?  Because I’m tired of this team struggling for the playoffs and then getting knocked out in the 1st or 2nd round.”

See, to me that’s just a defeatest attitude.  I NEVER want the Habs to miss the playoffs.  Ever.

Would you prefer a team that year in and year out competes for the President’s Trophy?  A team with a dominant goalie who’s always a Vezina candidate?  A big 6’4″ center who is a gifted puck distributor?  A couple of good old Canadian boys on the wings who are each capable of scoring 50 goals each?  How about a world-class defenseman with an absolute cannon for a shot?

They’re called the San Jose Sharks.  They have every possible component that you would probably want in a team.  I don’t know if there’s really any problem with the blue print they have put in place.  They are absolutely dominant in the regular season and then they fall apart in the playoffs.

    Which frustration would you prefer?

In 2006 the Edmonton Oilers came within one game of winning the Stanley Cup despite being an 8th seed.  That wasn’t so long ago.  Yeah, they would have had a better draft pick if they didn’t bother trying to scrape into the playoffs.

How about when the Flyers tanked a few years ago?  Finished last overall and lost the lottery pick and got VanRiemsdyk instead of Kane as the consolation prize, but still – that’s a top two pick, and the year before they grabbed Carter and Richards in the first round.  How are THEY doing now?  Are they that far ahead of the Habs?  Are their fans not frustrated right now?

Let’s cheer the team we have, let’s hope they make the playoffs, and then anything can happen.  As we saw tonight, every team that the Canadiens needed to win won their games.  That’s why they play them.

  512. WindsorHab-10 says:

Shame on every fan that booed Price last night. What do they expect from this kid? His last 6 losses, the team has scored  11 goals for him. I don’t care how much money we pay for tickets, respect is a two way street and those that booed lack respect for the team, the city and the rest of die hard fans.

    I’m still very disgusted.

  513. zooziff says:

Nice post. Disagree about the fans running Roy out of town. Patrick Roy wanted out because Mario Tremblay left him in for 9 goals. The fans booing didn’t help the situation; however, it was all created by Tremblay.

Jacques Demers treated Patrick Roy with some admiration and respect, Mario Tremblay went too far in sending messages to players.  Why embarrass (a then) future Hall of Fame goaltender? To me this situation was created by management by hiring Tremblay in the first place. I don’t think Tremblay and Roy got along anyway.

Patrick Roy may have been traded had this not happened, however, I highly doubt it would have been related to fans booing at The Forum on any occasion.

The sad thing is that management created today’s situation as well. They rushed Price along too soon and to a certain extent alienated Halak in the process.

I don’t like the booing either, it’s classless. How many times in the past have individuals at the Bell Centre booed the American National Anthem? Once again; classless.

Having said that everyone is entitled to boo or cheer for whoever they like. The Canadiens stink because of poor drafting, not getting decent returns for some UFA’s, suspect coaching, poor player development, etc…

It’s just my opinion of course.  Sorry to beat a dead horse, I’m just another crazy fan. I still hope we make the playoffs even if we get beat in 5 games in the first round.

Then I’ll be back here complaining again. ; )

Have the Habs made the play offs?

  541. Rusty says:

See below what Erik Karlsson means for the Sens. This is the same Karlsson who was outplayed by P.K. Subban at last year’s World Juniors. If Karlsson can do this, Subban can too. What exactly is JM afraid of – to spoil the great current run?

With Ottawa trailing 3-2 late in the third, Spezza won a draw in the Carolina end back to Karlsson, who blew a shot past Hurricanes goalie Manny Legace to tie the game with 7.7 seconds remaining in regulation.

“Everybody knew what we were going to do if we won the faceoff and it’s a really good faceoff by Spezza,” said Karlsson. “I just took the shot and it’s a really good feeling to see it go in.”

Karlsson has been instrumental for the Senators of late with three goals and seven assists in his last six games.

“He’s been phenomenal for us,” said Spezza. “His emergence has really helped our team out this second half and having young guys step up is what gives your team a lot of success and he’s done that … he’s been real valuable to our team.”

  542. SeriousFan09 says:

Karlsson is playing for the Senators for the same reason Dmitri Kulikov is playing for the Florida Panthers and Del Zotto is with the Rangers, none of these teams had a competent puck-moving defencemen to start the year and so they dropped their most promising prospect into the mix hoping for the best. Del Zotto burned out, Kulikov should’ve been in the AHL and Karlsson is not even half of what Tyler Myers is. I don’t get the love for that guy, he’s improved yes but I’ve yet to see anything from him that says he’s going to be huge in the NHL.

Subban is getting the AHL time because the management has decided to stop throwing our kinds in the deep end and hoping they’ll learn to swim. He’s improved on his defensive game a great deal since we saw him at training camp and is playing under a great development coach in Guy Boucher. He is there to play in the AHL, dominate it and get the experience of playing pro hockey. Preparing players to play in Montreal is much more difficult than playing in an arena where the only time it gets lively is when Leafs and Canadiens fans flood the place and overrule the home crowd with their cheering a la the Scotiabank Public Library/Hockey Arena.

We are last in the 30 NHL teams to score goals on 5 on 5. JM finally talked about creating more traffics in front of their goalie. I want to see whether they are actually doing it during the game.

Yet they are 2nd in 4 on 4 scoring. Seems inconsistent.

The board of governors need to ditch 5 on 5 and go with 4 on 4.

Agree about Roy V Tremblay being what really sent Roy out of town. Everything I managed to find about the 95 fiasco seemed to read that rather it seemed to just come down to the fact that Tremblay and Roy didn’t like each other nor were they willing to get along in the interest of the team. Houle made a mistake when he moved the best goaltender of his era to guard the job of a marginal NHL coach.

Bowman left Pittsburgh because he couldn’t work with Lemieux and Lemieux stayed where he was. They chose to keep the best player in NHL history ahead of the coach who had coached them to a Cup Win (Bowman no less!) because they saw the value in having the best player the NHL ever saw IMO. Sometimes, the player is more important than the coach and Houle didn’t understand that.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
