New York–Dustin Tokarski played his first National Hockey League playoff game on Monday.

On Thursday, the 24-year-old rookie goaltender made 35 saves, was named the game’s second star, and earned praise from his coach and teammates.

He was ‘phenomenal,” said Canadiens coach Michel Therrien after the Habs 3-2 win overtime win against the New York Rangers.

The Rangers outshot the Canadiens 14-4 in the first period.

“We weathered the storm and I felt our team played with more confidence as the game went on,” said Therrien, adding the Rangers got a break at the end of the game to tie the score with a puck hitting Alexei Emelin’s skate.

“But without Tokarski’s performance the result probably would have been different,” the coach said.

The way Tokarski played Thursday “on this stage shows you what he can do at this level,” said Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban.

“It’s a big boost for our hockey club. He made some huge saves where we’re kind of looking at each other (saying) ‘guys we’ve got to wake up. He’s giving us an opportunity to continue to have success here and you’ve got to back him up.”

The Canadiens need to play their game and for the most part of the series they haven’t done that yet, Canadiens captain Brian Gionta said.

“Game 4 will be a good test for us,” Gionta said.

It looked like the Canadiens might hang on in the third period to a 2-1 lead, but Chris Kreider tied the game at 19:31 sending the game into overtime. Alex Galchenyuk scored the game-winning goal for the Canadiens at 1:12 of the first overtime period.

Wow, Dregger says league could throw a book at Carcillo and give him from 10 to 20 games. I honestly doubt that. If there is indeed a suspension I see something like 3 games.

Tokarski is getting better and better each period. This much ooze confidence. Keeping throwing the body at the Rangers.

Our road goal scoring trend continues of scoring on average 3 goals per road game. Got a good feeling about Sunday evening.

    GO HABS GO!

Once Tinordi and others are ready to play we will see a huge difference in how size and reach help…This Habs team spends a lot of time in their D zone regardless the team they play…

  6. HabsPooch says:

Is it me or should White replace Prust when he gets a one game suspension?

Is it me or should Tinordi replace Weaver?

    • yukonhab says:

Weaver is saving 7 shots a game. Tinner will only come in if there’s an injury and Frank and Douglas are in before him

    • Timo says:

It is really hard to knock Weaver. He’s a shot blocking machine and he has done so much this playoffs. Maybe Bouillon with PK on the pairing instead of Gorges? I mean, come on… Franky B and PK. Can’t beat that.

      • BJ says:

I also liked his hit on a much bigger Nash. Nash ended looking at ne roof of MSG. The guy is all heart. I’d love to see him smile holding the Cup above his head.

    • rogieshan says:

I believe Mario Tremblay & Benoit Brunet both suggested Therrien should replace Beaulieu with Boullion for the next game, since the former isn’t trusted to play much late in a tight game.

IS it me or should Bournival replace Gionta?

  9. habs001 says:

Another o/t game sunday?..but the team will need a much better effort…
