Recchi speaks recklessly

stu1

Last week during the GMs meetings in Boston, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman reportedly pulled aside Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier and Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli and instructed the teams to stick to hockey on Mar. 24 in Boston, essentially a plea to cool things off following the season-long escalation of hostilities between the clubs.

But, sadly, Chiarelli didn’t give a copy of the memo to Mark Recchi.

As if the heated Canadiens-Bruins rivalry needed any more fuel, former Hab Recchi went on Boston radio 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger and Mazz Show Wednesday and — prompted by the hosts of the program, Boston Herald columnist Michael Felger and Boston Globe writer Tony Massarotti (and someone named Jermaine) — accused the Canadiens of embellishing the severity of Max Pacioretty’s injury in an attempt to get Zdeno Chara suspended and charged Canadiens fans had their judgment clouded by the events of Mar. 8.

Listening to the entire interview, which you can do here, you can hear the hosts, prior to Recchi’s joining them, take a highly skeptical view of Pacioretty’s injuries. They clearly doubt Pacioretty was concussed, even though every concussion is different and, in some cases, athletes display no post-concussion symptoms whatsoever after being knocked out, as was the case with Pacioretty.

They also sneer at the concept that he could be back for the playoffs, even though five years ago, the Hurricane’s Erik Cole also suffered a non-displaced fracture of his vertebrae, on March 6, 2006, after being checked by Brooks Orpik (video), and was able to return in June during the Stanley Cup final.

And, they also cannot correctly pronounce “Gauthier.”

When Recchi came on, he joined their skepticism on the severity of Pacioretty’s injury, his evidence being that Pacioretty went to the movies five days after the incident. And the hosts led Recchi to say Montreal fans are so wrapped up in their team, unlike anyplace else, that their judgment on the incident “was clouded big time.”

The reaction against Recchi has been largely harsh, as it probably should be. Here’s a respected NHL veteran who misspoke, goaded by sports radio hosts whose main mission is to be as sensational as possible, grab and build their audience and, if they can whip it into an emotional frenzy, all the better. They used Recchi to reinforce the antagonism between the clubs and promote the local Boston view of what happened Mar. 8 as “the truth,” which is hardly less provincial and narrow-minded than what they self-righteously accuse Montrealers of displaying.

It’s not playing well in the world at large. “Mark Recchi” trended on Twitter for a while and — excluding the expected reactions from both Montreal and Boston or tweeps who are clearly fans of one of the teams — we found some real gems. Like Brandon Pickard, National Program Manager at Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! – “Can’t believe Mark Recchi would question the severity of Pacioretty’s injury. Lost a lot of respect for him on that one.”

Ryan from Saskatchewan: “Mark Recchi is a dumbass. You realize people record things on the radio right Mark? Used to be a hero of mine when I was a kid. Yuck.”

Mike Harrington, Buffalo News: “Mark Recchi…holy moly….I bet he wouldn’t have been such a brave bigmouth if tomorrow’s game was in the Bell Centre rather than Boston.”

Mark from Michigan “Marc Recchi thinking Max Pacioretty embellished his injury??? You gotta be kidding me”

Victoria from Vancouver (who judging from her blog is a Canucks fan): “Dear Mark Recchi, I’ve had a concussion so severe I had a hairline fracture in my skull. I still could have watched a movie.”

The Bear (who says he loves Tuuka Rask): “You’re smarter than that Mark Recchi.”

The hilarious Toronto blogger Down Goes Brown quoted Recchi from the interview saying “I’ve been run into the turnbuckle probably 40 times in my career.” and commented “OK, this is all making more sense now.”

Sean from North Carolina: “What I’m saying is that (rabid Bruins TV announcer) Jack Edwards bit Mark Recchi on the arm yesterday, and look what happened.”

Joe Thistel, Director of Programming, NHL HOME ICE, XM 204/Sirius 208, “What was Mark Recchi thinking? Oh, he wasn’t thinking. Imagine how stupid he would sound if he had played this long without a helmet?”

Andrew (from Long Island): “I kind of wish someone would Zdeno Chara Mark Recchi. What an a——.”

Wayne Karl who writes the Hockey Business Report: “Now I get it, Mark Recchi has been in the league so long, he didn’t benefit from the media training that incoming players receive these days”

Caroline (from Pittsburgh. Or Minnesota): “Mark Recchi is such a twat.”

Heather (a Sabres fan from Tonawanda, NY): “Silly, Mark Recchi. Everyone knows the NHL doesn’t actually care about concussions. That’s no way to get someone suspended.”

Steve (from Calgary): “Please Mark Recchi, enlighten me. How exactly does one embellish a broken vertebra?”

Ryan (Leafs fan): “After listening to the audio, I sort of agree with Mark Recchi. Does that make me a bad person? … yeah, probably.”

And this one from Robin, a Habs fan out west that I just couldn’t ignore: “According to Mark Recchi, the jews faked the holocaust.”

Well, you get the idea. Of course, Recchi has supporters in the Twitter universe as well, but largely the response was negative and outraged. Adam Proteau, an editor at The Hockey News and one of the smartest young writers in the sport, theorized on Twitter that Recchi did this with some foresight “Give Mark Recchi credit for being a team player & saying what he did to take the heat off of Chara. Few are that ignorant without a plan.”

Maybe. Or maybe he just screwed up. Big time.

That’s some bang up reporting. What else do people tweet? The world wants to know!

Recchi sounds like an idiot but aside from sounding like an idiot and maybe having to answer for it on the ice I fail to see how he’s going to have to answer for it “big time.” Are you saying he’s going to be suspended…?

    • PeterD says:

I used to like Mark Recchi as a Habs player and a Pittsburg player, I even admired his longevity for playing so long in Boston…but he has lost all credibility and respect from me with his idiotic and stupid comments.
If he has sunk so low into the Bulls–t that is the Boston Hype, then he is no better than a Marchant shooting his mouth off and embarrassing himself every time he speaks – or should I say grunts.
Absolutely no class on that team top to bottom and including the long retired or fired veterans..Cherry, Milbury, PK and the rest…

  3. Irishhabsfan says:

Some times it is better to “keep your mouth shut” and let people just think you are an idiot, than open it and confirm the fact. With all the injuries Recchi has witnessed in his years in the league, he should know better than to make moronic comments.

Beat them where it counts tonight lads! on the scoreboard.

  4. Harry says:

Here is a veteran player who does not seem to understand that he was a witness to a concussion. Pacioretty did not faint, he was knocked unconscious after a blow to the head. The NHL should urgently get on this case, as Recchi’s comments might lead other players to think the same way, if they don’t already. Does the league seriously instruct teams and staff about the diagnosis of a concusssion and its aftermath?

  5. athanor says:

It’s interesting listening to that interview. Massarotti basically was mute after saying hello to Recchi.

After all, he was the guy who ripped into Chara over the hit, saying he ‘had every intention of running Max Pacioretty into, as Carey Price called it, “the turnbuckle.”‘

He then took a whole lot of abuse from Bruins fans.

And Recchi then fell into the leading-question trap laid by the two other guys.

I wonder if he is ruing that today. I sure hope he is after tonight.

I seem to remember when bergeron was rammed into the boards he said he would get headaches just watching TV. I know my eyes get pretty tired sitting in front of monitor all day and night. Maybe he went to the movies because he was bored as hell, and a projected image doesn’t bother you as much.

But Recchi is a tool, no doubt about that.

what a disgraceful comment from Recchi .I do not have any respect for Recchi anymore hope our Habs fans BOO him every time he touches the puck, to bad this game is not being played in Mlt. Since when did Recchi become a DOCTOR to say what Max has ?????What a fool I wish with all my heart that we win. GO FOR IT GUYS WIN THIS ONE FOR MAX & SHUT BOSTON UP FOR GOOD. GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Nahlsy says:

Didn’t Recchi defend Justin ‘Samurai’ Williams after he speared Koivu in the eye vs the Canes as well?

Well done Recchi, you just went from a respected former Hab to one of the biggest morons in the league and wiped out 20 years of respect in one shot. It must be something in the water in Boston that makes all athletes (and fans) that go there become the biggest d-bags on the planet. Time to retire Recchi, you’ve lost your legacy and nobody will miss you when you’re gone now. Hopefully you go out tonight with a “fake” injury just like the one Pacioretty has and you can tell everyone how your broken neck and concussion feels to you.

  11. habbifier says:

Recchi is a smart man who knew exactly what he was going to say going into that interview. The spot light is now slightly off Chara’s shoulders (their MVP), completely off Lucic and Horton’s shoulders (their best forwards) and on to those of a 43 year old ex hab who’s likely going to enjoy the attention he never received.

Whether he believes his comments or not is irrelevant. Recchi feels like a winner already.

  12. habss1 says:

I feel Recchi is just trying to entice the habs into undisciplined play to make it easier to win the game. He knows better, they lost Savard on a similar cheap shot. The habs need to take the game as Buffalo did to us on Tuesday nite simple as that, they do that we WIN!!

  13. Robert L says:

Isn’t twat an acronym for “the war against terror?”

  14. Aaron13 says:

The Boston fans think Recchi is a moron (CBS Boston) and he is.

  15. habs365 says:

The Bruins will win tonight….the Refs will make sure of that….Campbell will have that fixed ahead of time.

    • Nina76 says:

habs365……I agree with you 100% that is exactly what will happen they do not want a Canadien time to win at anytime the cup has to stay in U.S.A. that is what they think.WAIT……let me remind you U.S.A. …HOCKEY IS OUR GAME!!!!! give us time & we will get it back. Give us time & you will have a hard time beating us.Watch your BACK Recchi you never know…..GO HABS GO!!!!!!!

Two hours after I woke up from an appendectomy I asked the nurse at the Royal Vic to unplug me from the machines for a couple hours so that I could go with my friends to the movies. I walked very slowly but it HAD to be done-I hated being tied up in the hospital room. Three days later I was visiting the sights of Ottawa with my grandmother. Both times I felt like crap but I didn’t care.
My post surgery activities shouldn’t have dictated whether or not I had the surgery.

  17. malmn says:

what recchi said is extremely insensitive, rude, disrespectful and inconsiderate. he knows exactly what he said the the impact it would make, which makes him even more a an a-h*le. there’s no place for stuff like this in the game. if the league officials cared about its image, it would fine and/or suspend recchi for making such unsportsmanlike remarks, especially considering bettman told both teams to zip it

  18. NLhabsfan says:

I have always felt sorry for boston teams and fans.It must be very frustrating always loose to the Canadiens year after year. Even going back to Orr’s time when he made that fake dive. To many men on the ice, losing the last series up 3 zip etc.We have always humbled the poor guys.Feel pity friends rather then scorn.

    • SensFanSpezza says:

Recchi probably thinks Saku Koivu embelished his cancer too. After all, he went to movies while he was undergoing treatment and he was able to come back in time for the playoffs.

  21. G-Man says:

We can’t say H–s, but we can say twat? Are the lawyers ok with this?

2011 is the Year of the Hab (can I still say that?)

    • SensFanSpezza says:

You can say it as long as the Montreal Canadiens marketing machine doesn’t decide “twat” is an officially recognized nickname of their hockey team. Although there’s probably some copyright infringement there because the Bruins and their players have been using it for so long.

  22. Marc10 says:

Hey, we live in a world where some backwoods moron who shoots wolves from a plane and who knows diddly squat about the world has a legitimate shot at the presidency.

So Mark Recchi thinking he’s a neurosurgeon does not really surprise me… He’s a pathetic troll – kinda of like the rest of those so-called ‘insiders’ over at the Toronto Sports Network who broadcast his drivel.

Carey, Carey, Carey, Oi, Oi, Oi!!!

    • The Cat says:

Recchi shouldve known better, but those radio announcers are scum. Im willing to bet Recchi regrets it and will apologize. Its inhuman to belittle the Pacioretty incident. I cant be the only one that thought he might not ever get up from that. Who knows, maybe belittling it is their way of coping with the fear of playing the game in its present state.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  27. CHsam says:

And you know what else is awful? TSN replayed that damn hit over and over again tonight… what’s wrong with these guys? How the hell do you “embellish” a neck fracture? How do you know he’s not concussed going to the movies? Sidney Crosby is watching TV, therefore he is not concussed. The strangest thing about these comments to me is that Recchi said them while sober. I say a lot of stupid things when drunk, but boy, to say somebody faked his own broken neck………
