Quick hits

I’m sorry, folks.

That Gomez play, given the situation, was brain-dead and brutal. And to his credit, Gomez admitted it.

Yes, Tyler Myers mugged Lars Eller about six times in the Buffalo end. But it’s a 1-1 game, Eller retains possession, doesn’t embellish and that’s life in the NHL.

Back in the other end, Gomez – who has already gone off for coincident roughing with Nathan “Little Beaver” Gerbe – gets the butt end of his stick up in the wee Buffalo forward’s face.

Gomez is a hot-head. How many times have we seen him retaliate?

Gerbe sells it.

They call it.

The ensuing power play could have cost the Canadiens a point.

It didn’t because Tomas Plekanec played a brilliant puck-holding shift on the penalty-kill.

Note also that Pleks’ heroism came after losing D-zone faceoffs to Paul Gaustad, who was 14-6 on draws.

Gomez was indisposed for D-zone draws. And ace faceoff man Jeff Halpern was unavailable because he was either hurt or ill. Halpern returned to the bench, but played only a couple short PK shifts … and none late in the game or in the OT that Jason Pominville ended.

Playing the second game in two nights with nine usable forwards, the Canadiens escaped Buffalo with a valuable point.

Carey Price said it felt almost like a win. Given the manpower situation, it might have been the gutsiest effort of the season.

But looking ahead, intestinal fortitude might not be enough.

Michael Cammalleri probably has a separated shoulder. Gone two weeks, minimum.

Max Pacioretty, one of the few forwards on the team who goes to the net, was in the right place at the wrong time when James Wisniewski uncorked a vintage Sheldon Souray/MAB laser from the blueline.

TV kept showing Pacioretty being wheeled out on a stretcher, with an IV drip. The report is a rib injury, with hospitalization to check for internal damage.

We’ll know more tomorrow … and the Canadiens will make an announcement in the fullness of time.

But I can’t see Max-Pac being available in Ottawa on Friday or for the Saku Koivu/Max Lapierre Gala Homecoming on Saturday.

Andrei Kostitsyn took Cammalleri’s spot with Plekanec and Eller. That might be a viable Band-Aid solution if – and it’s a big if – AK46 can regain Top Six form.

Max-Pac’s spot with Gomez and Brian Gionta was filled by Mathieu Darche in Buffalo. That’s not going to work.

Benoit Pouliot?

See above: Kostitsyn, Andrei.

So you be the general manager:

Michel Bergeron, on L’Antichambre, said Pierre Gauthier has to make a move. A team that can’t score has lost a sniper. Cammalleri is irreplaceable, Bergeron said, by anyone in Hamilton.

Ryan White?

Not as big as Pacioretty, nor as fast. But on the evidence of a great training camp, White is a willing warrior. So maybe he’s the call-up.

After that, it gets thin.

Dustin Boyd? Please.

At least the D got through the game intact.

P.K. Subban played another brilliant game in his 24-plus minutes. The sequence in which he and Carey Price patted each other while the play was going on will make many highlight reels.

Yannick Weber, of all people, led the Canadiens with four blocked shots. He’s getting better, more reliable.

Carey Price lost his goaltending showdown with Ryan Miller. But Price made 37 saves (to Miller’s 29) and had no chance on the winning goal.

The Canadiens salvaged a point because Buffalo is a lousy team.

Lose two Top Six forwards plus a penalty-killing specialist and see what happens against Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Boston … it’s a long list.

Against the Sabres, a three-line team managed a 1-1 tie in regulation.

And but for Gomez’s irrationalism …

More tomorrow.

  1. SHUTTemDOWN says:

    OOaahh! Somebody’s in love. Price+P.K.=Pricelesss…Now that’s TEAM.

  2. shiram says:

    Ip block for the win?

  3. StevieRay says:

4 on 3 hockey is a lot different than 5 0n 4 … Gomez took a dumb ass penalty with less than a minute to play in regulation ..

Winable ?? yes sir .. Price was on top of his game and 4 on 4 we’re as good as anyone …

But I guess all is well since Gomez is now saying he’ll take the blame … Talk is Cheap !!!

If that was Eller or my man Benny who pulled that stunt their butt would be nailed to the bench …

Gomez frustrates me immensly….nuff said !

  4. Landof10000lakesHab says:

There will be no trades this week – PG will not deal from desperation, and a trade is not required.

Pouliot, Eller, and AK can assist on top six. Organizational depth.

White can be brought up to support bottom six, if Habs Mgmt feels he has sufficiently recovered from early season injuries and can compete at a similar / improved NHL level as last season.

If Halpern was to miss time, then Andreas Engqvist would likely be called up as he offers the defensive centre strength in the pipeline.

  5. CharlieHodgeFan says:

Pacioretty is a recent call up – a brilliant one, but a guy who came in late. What he brings is a bonus, and having him out hurts a lot, but can be dealt with. Cammilleri is a bigger hit, even if he was slumping. If he’s gone for a few weeks, the team is in trouble. White has maybe two goals in the AHL, and it’s goals this team needs, not just guys to skate hard.

Pouliot. Kostityn, Eller, Gionta – any of those guys could get hot. I don’t see a big trade, so as usual, we sit here and watch what happens. The Habs are a good team this year, and the depth is being built – Pacioretty, Eller, Pouliot and increasingly Desharnais are interesting young forwards. The team is not far from being at a solid level of depth for an NHL organization, but these injuries at this time stretch it out pretty far.

That was a nasty evening of hockey against a shabby team and with inconsistent officiating. Ugly hockey with ugly results.

  6. Josh says:

I think it’s time for teams and the league to start calling out the refs because this is just getting ridiculous.

  7. Mr. Biter says:

worst refing I have ever seen in the last  2 minutes of a game. Eller & Wiz drilled in the boards , no call Gomer  swings and misses and we get 2. hard to win playing 8 vs 6. Also did not see Cammy hit but again a hit against one of our better players. i posted 3 months ago we need a BGL * pre habs days) and mentioned Bonneau or anyone who knowa his job  even if he can only skate between the blue lines without tripping but will inflict damage regardless of the consequenses. Enough is enough and in thid game we were robbrd by the Refs.

  8. VancouverHab says:

That’s brilliant Bill — this level of wit & character is one of the many reasons I love it here.

And then you make Bugs happy:  “…Kostitsyn can replace Cammalleri on the top line with Pleks and Eller. And Pouliot could fill in for Max Pac…”

  9. Bill says:

Hard to be anything but happy with this gutsy road point. Gomez made a bad play there, and it cost the team … but let me say – and for those who are unaware (shouldn’t be many) I am not exactly his biggest fan – I didn’t have a giant problem with it. It must get frustrating to play for a team that gets called for everything while your opposition gets the benefit of the doubt. That jerk Gerbe had something coming … and Gomez gave it to him. Fair enough. Not great timing, true, but it’s an emotional game.

So I like Gomez showing a little nasty there. I will not mention his salary for a week,

Down their top-two D-men, the Habs now lose Cammalleri long-term (probably) and Max Pac, who resuscitated the Gomez-Gionta line for an indefinite period. Also Halpern looked none too serviceable. Hmm. Hmm hmm hmm. I absolutely believe that Kostitsyn can replace Cammalleri on the top line with Pleks and Eller. And Pouliot could fill in for Max Pac, even if doesn’t have the same net-presence. I don’t know if a trade will be helpful … not a lot of good help available out there.

    Full Breezer 4 Life

  10. Number31 says:

Would have been nice if Martin had opened his mouth DURING the game like Lindy Ruff did. His players would certainly love to know he’s got their backs like that while they’re being manhandled instead of just standing there muttering to himself while rolling his eyes.

  11. Number31 says:

I thought Hamr and Spacek being out on the PK for four goals against in that Pens game was enough of a red flag, not to mention their uninspired play during the mini-meltdown yesterday, but sure enough they continue to get PK time in critical situations. Just what the heck were they doing out in an OT penalty kill that was almost done? Hamr couldn’t win a battle, and Spacek’s rear wasn’t going to pick up the trailer… They’d have had a better chance putting three defensive forwards out!

  12. 134 says:

Punctured lung is very serious condtion, but the fact that he did not have an oxygen mask on him and was allowed to board the plane with the team to return to Montreal, I’m more optimistic about his condition.

  13. OneTimer says:

I’m happy, but, won’t he just come back in a different guise? Don’t they always come back? 🙁

  14. SeriousFan09 says:

These injuries are hopefully not that long term but really, we shouldn’t be dealing assets to address these issues. Habs can’t make the playoffs on their own steam than while unfortunate, ity’s better than going in, geting knocked around, havlng a lower draft pick and less picks/prospects to build on for next season.

Habs have to look at their future and that doesn’t include going for quick fixes every time an injury situation hits, that’s why you have a farm for (hopefully) short-term injuries. Avtsin is too green for the NHL, he’ll be spending this year and likely next year in the “A” but Maxwell, Palushaj may get invitations pretty soon.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  15. 134 says:

To me the game was a W 🙂

  16. 134 says:

    Ha! These kids are cute!

  17. sidhu says:

Awesome video — Price gives Subban a tap for his play, during the play!

  18. 134 says:

Just wondering what everyone thinks- because I didn’t watch the whole game and I’m just curious- would it still be a winnable OT game if it weren’t for the Gomez penalty that took the team down to a 4 on 3 in the OT? Because from what I’m reading, sounds like the Habs were just hanging on for dear life most of the time due to the number of injuries…

  19. _Habsoloutly_ says:

Big big thanks to whomever banned that fool HABS IN THE BLOOD.

  20. OneTimer says:

You know what, Habs fans…if it’s just Cammalleri that’s out for an extended period of time, I think we might be ok. He wasn’t exactly scoring for us (until last game) and we were just starting to turn a corner. He’ll heal up for 2-4 weeks, and maybe just maybe he’ll come out fresh and hungry for the playoffs and light it up again. Here’s to hopin’.

Either way, great effort by the Habs tonight, I like what I’m seeing from this low-scorin’ little team that could.

  21. Josh says:

Gomez’s stick didn’t even touch Gerbe.

  22. _Habsoloutly_ says:

Would love to get Matt Moulson!

  23. _Habsoloutly_ says:

It’s true Boone.  It’s one of the things I always remembered about Gomez when he was with the Rags, he frequently takes stupid, undisciplined penalties.

  24. joeybarrie says:

I know it doesn’t exactly work this way, but no one can say we haven’t been jinxed or something. Last 2 years, I just wonder how well we could have done without the long major injuries.

IM SO PISSED. Got great seats Feb 1st and I will miss my favorite player if his shoulder is indeed seperated.

    #@*!     $@#!    &*%$   #@#$

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  25. Mr.Hazard says:

I absolutely LOVED Price in this game, and also the “congratulating” bit between him and PK.

  26. SHUTTemDOWN says:

Another odd shituation pour les Habitants…Will it ever end?

Sussspend that sucka who thought Cammi needed to get to the puck a little quicker.

Note to Colon C.: Make up for those Buffalo chicken wing refs.

    All in favour, say I.

  27. habaholic68NJ says:

Regarding MaxPac, best case scenario is a bruised rib and he will miss a few games. But if the puck broke a rib, he could be out for 4-6 weeks.  If the broken rib also punctured his lung (explaining the collapse, then he may be out 3-4 months.

  28. ooder says:

go watch JM’s interview on TSN…

even he calls out the reffing (in a JM manner of course)

saying how eller took shots to the head and nothign was called…

and said that we should know better with the inconsistent reffing.

    88 is the new 23

  29. krob1000 says:

alex tanguay at left wing anyone?  could probably be had for nothing that would affect our lineup…..matt moulson? stillman? Simmonds (would take a lot)we need a left winger…I think two of White, Maxwell or even Palushaj ?Avtsin will get called up…but we still need a deal because I can’t see either Cammi or MAxPac coming back anytime soon…Halpern may have a head injry….never know with those…..a third line center?Arnott? Could we somehow land Andrew Ladd? Hejduk? For this weekend there has to be callups of the offensive kind…I doubt a deal can be made in time for the weekend games uness there was one they were already contemplating….this is very, very troubling…Pleks, PK  and Price seem up for the challenge though at least…and that is pretty damn key

  30. joeybarrie says:

The Refing was particularly bad in the 3rd. They buried their whistles and we paid the price. Gomez shouldnt have lost it, but its tough when your playing with such emotion. HOWEVER a 8 million dollar check should help keep your head cool…

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  31. sidhu says:

Benny and White (my guess) will take Cammy and Max Power’s spots, though I would like to see PG get David Clarkson (I am a broken record in this regard).  He can fight, he has 100+ shots, almost 100 hits, and is a willing body in front of the net.  I’m impressed by Eller’s work ethic, the guy does not quit playing and he backchecks very well.

  32. light_n_tasty says:

Effing Reffing blah blah blah whine whine whine…Habs had some calls go their way in the first period…it all evens out.  The problem was we scored one goal. I was happy that we got out of there with a point.

  33. OneTimer says:

Hold your heads up high, Habs. That was a gutsy effort. Love the character on this team.

  34. vegas_habs_fan says:

You know what makes me want to bawl uncontrollably? If Cammy had buried that shot right before his injury, none of this would have happened. How depressing is that?

  35. JIMVINNY says:

Martin mentioned “inconsistencies” in the reffing, and how Eller got roughed up with no call, but other than that, he said nothing.  Geoff Molson or someone like him needs to step up and say something.  The reffing has been atrocious all season.  And it’s cost us points on more than one occasion.  This has to stop.

  36. notbigbird says:

Cmon Boone (my favourite sportswriter of all time :). Gomez and others battled valianty. The point is almost miraculous. Let’s leave it at that.

  37. vegas_habs_fan says:

Being the pessimst here, there’s no way that MaxPac has only a bruise. I bruised my rib the same way back in midget hockey… painful as hell but I could still get off the ice by myself and stuff and most def. didn’t require a stretcher and IV.

Hope it’s just a break and not a collapse

  38. Larry Riley says:
    • How come no mention how much Alex Auld’s mask looks alot like the old Ken Dryden mask ??? same colors and pattern…………
