One more sleep – if anyone can – until Game 7.

I doubt Spatcho was including the bounce his head took off the side glass, after a second-period hit by Milan Lucic.
After the Bruins’ rugged forward was dispatched to an early shower, Patrice Bergeron fired the puck over the glass during the Boston penalty kill and Brian Gionta scored the winning goal during a 5-on-3 power play.
So the hit on Spatcho was the turning point, right?
Well, not really. The game, like this crazy series, was too close to point to a single event that turned the tide.
While I’m writing, lightning bolts are shooting across the Montreal night sky. I don’t know whether either team’s charter flight will be able to take off, and it will be a bumpy ride and a late check-in at the Boston hotel.
Just another bit of adversity for your Montreal Canadiens to deal with – like the Spacek injury and a first-period hit, by Adam McQuaid, that knocked Lars Eller out of the game for a long stretch.
So tired skaters at the TD Banknorth Garden?
Don’t bet on it. The old rivals have played an excellent playoff series to date, and there’s no reason to think the finale will be anything but.
“It’s a Game 7, Montreal against Boston,” said Jeff Halpern, one of the many Game 6 heroes. “I have to believe everyone will have their legs. It will be a special atmosphere.”
Hard to top the atmosphere at the Bell Centre, where the fans were FINALLY treated to a home ice win this spring.
Carey Price was overdue. He hadn’t won a playoff game on home ice in three years and two days – a frustrating streak that ended with a 31-save performance.
The Canadiens won on the basis of Jacques Martin’s frequently-cited – zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! – keys to victory:
Goaltending and special teams.
The Canadiens got power-play goals from Gionta and Michael Cammalleri.
The penalty kill hung another 0-for on the Bruins, who had four PPs in Game 6. Boston is now 0-for-19 in the series.
Props to the PK guys: P.K. Subban, Hal Gill, Tomas Plekanec, Travis Moen, Halpern, Brent Sopel and Brian Gionta.
Props to Eller, who came back and joined Halpern and Mathieu Darche for a lunch-bucket third-period cycling shift that epitomized the Canadiens’ effort in staying alive.
Props to the amazing P.K., who played 27:08 and was on the point – without James Wisniewski – for both PP goals.
Props to Scott Gomez who had five SoG, played well in his own end (which has not always been the case in this series) and won 9 of 15 faceoffs.
The Canadiens were 35-27 on draws (Halpern 6-1!), and as Darche pointed out, it makes a world of difference if you don’t start every shift “chasing the puck for 15 seconds.”
Some other stuff from the stat sheet:
• Lucic, Nathan Horton (!) and Shawn Thornton were the only Bruins who didn’t register shots on goal. The Canadiens’ shot-less list included Paul Mara, Moen, Roman Hamrlik, Andrei Kostitsyn (!), Darche, Ryan White, Gill, Yannick Weber and Tom Pyatt.
• Gomez, Cammalleri, Plekanec and Gionta had 20 of the Canadiens’ 27 shots.
• The Canadiens outhit the Bruins 23-11. Mara had four, Gill three.
• Canadiens led blocked shots 27-13. Hamrlik had eight.
• Cammalleri and Plekanec played more than 25 minutes. Gionta 24:38. I’m not as worried about how much gas they’ll have in the tank in Boston as I am about Hamrlik, who played 22:05.
• Chris Lee and Kevin Pollock were predictably awful: Gionta’s disallowed goal, the severity of the call on Lucic (Mike Richard got two minutes for a far worse hit on Tim Connolly), a goaltender interference call on Patrice Bergeron that Price sold effectively.
At least we won’t see these particular zebras in Game 7.

This team fills me with so much energy. What a team! I can sit here all day and talk about defensive zone problems, Gionta or a whole basket of other things but why? They pull together and get the win! What a building! What a hockey city! A game like this justifies to my wife why I save my pennies every year to make sure my boy and myself get to the bell centre from Newfoundland. It’s the best time of the year, its playoff time and my sleep deprivation is overwhelmed by my excitement and my heart racing. Too bad she is a die hard Pouliot fan (not for hockey skills) but I still get to see her in a jersey?
Watching the game 315 kms off the coast on an oil rig and the jersey is alive and well just like the series.

The hawks did it to nashville in game 5 last year during the first round. Hossa had a 5 minute major for boarding late in the 3rd and the hawks scored with about 10 seconds left or something while being shorthanded to tie the game. To add insult to injury hossa got out of the box in overtime and scored the game winner. The preds should have been going home up 3-2 in the series. That very play could have been the difference between winning the cup and losing in the first round.

i think in game 7 we will have success in the counter attack game…it is time for thomas to give up a few bad goals…if we get the first goal i think we can score above our 2 goals a game average
He’s given up bad goals early in the series. The secret to him is like a lot of NHL goaltenders, he’s shaky to start, but if he makes a few big saves or gets lucky early and his team gives him a lead, he settles down and plays well because his nervousness turns to confidence ( when he gives up the juicy rebounds it’s because he’s not confident and fighting the puck). He was even shaky to begin the game that Bos won 7-0 last month but a big lead by his team settled him down. I think this may be his first back to back game of the year ( with Rask as a backup not necessary to play b2b’s), so I’m curious to see how the old man makes out with that too

Price was excellent, Cammi had fire in his eyes, Gionta worked hard, Kostitsyn was brutal early but threw some hits later in the game which helped, even Gomez made an effort (which proves he’s been coasting). PK is a star in ascent, not that you need me to tell you that.
As for JM’s philosophy of turtling if we get a lead, I’ll save that discussion for the summer. All I have to say is that it is damn painful to watch for anyone who’s watched many years of Habs hockey. And if you say “well we won”, well, it’s more relaxing winning 4-1 than 2-1.
Back to Boston. I think we have a good shot of getting to them, though the mushy ice worries me greatly. We need to do damage early before it negates our speed.

Far as I’m concerned, this was a 3-1 win by the Habs, respectable when missing your PF. With essentially all of our puck-moving defencemen on the mend, it’s hard to have an attacking game with leadfooted D stretched out. In their Cup runs, Habs always had 2 or 3 Ds who could skate with the best of them.

It was such a weird game, it’s hard to say who was the better team. If you include goaltending and special teams, I guess you have to go with the Habs.
Did I LIKE watching the Habs play Jacques’s 1-goal lead-protection system? Get chased and dominated and just desperately try to flip the puck out? Um, no. But they won a game they shouldn’t have. And that goes nicely with the game they should have won but didn’t, you know?
I’ve said Habs in seven all along, and this seems like a bad time to change my tune! I’d just like to see the same commitment to defense matched with some kind of forecheck next game … I’d also like to see better refereeing, but hey, how could it be worse??

Would like to see a bit more finish next game, but with all the injuries it’s probably a lot to ask.
So we’re down Markov, Gorges, Pacioretty, Wizniewski, and Desharnais. And clearly, Eller and Spacek and Kosititsyn are hurting.
The Bruins are down a Savard who wasn’t the same player this year anyway. Clearly, the Habs are at a disadvantage there.
The thing that really stings is that the Pacioretty, Wiz, and Desharnais losses are directly due to the pounding the Bruins regularly lay on the Habs, as are the Eller and Spacek injuries. The Habs are paying the price for being the smaller, less sturdy and physical team here. Just another example of how the Habs need to toughen up in the future.

Well I wouldn’t say any of those injuries have much to do with size. Wiz fell awkwardly on a routine hit, Pacioretty’s injury probably would have been worse with most players, Kostitsyn was hurt on a blocked shot, DD was hurt on a knee-on-knee… I guess Spacek is a bit less sturdy though.
Still incredibly frustrating to see a ton of our best players out.
I think they’re playing very tough this series. Not getting pushed around at all.
I am so relieved we one and want to enjoy this for the moment but here are some observations:
The Bruins seemed to dominate more of the tone than any other game in the series.
-The Canadiens seemed nervous from the get go,I think home does not work in their favor.
-As for lucky bounces,haven’t we earned a few with all of the horse shoes thomas had up his ass in game five?In a series like this these things seem to even out.
Thoughts on Tomorrow:
The bruins are going to come at this very emotionally,the defensive posturing will be overtaken by their desire to run the habs out of the rink.There logic will be,it is Game 7 in our Barn,lets play our game and leave it all on the table as we only have 1 shot..This is where the cool chess like demeanor of JM could prevail.A long patient game /chess match will play in the Habs favor as they will be nervous the further the game goes on…
Eller is turning into a beauty of a pick up. Getting better every game, great progress in his rookie season. I agree if he puts a few more pounds this off season he’s gonna be a presence to be feared.

I’m worried for our Dmen tomorrow, they looked completely exhausted in the 3rd. What a heart attack inducing game. This sitting back the minute they get a lead is so frustrating. But a win is a win so… Good luck in beantown boys. Eliminate the bruins and I’ll be a happy fan.
I’m more worried about Gio, Pleks, and Cammy. They all played around 25 minutes. In contrast, every Bruins forward except for one was under 19 minutes. Krejci played a shade over 20, Lucic under 8 minutes. If our top 3 can’t step up tomorrow, who does? Gomez? Kostitsyn? A possibly hurt Eller? Will Desharnais play? Pouliot?
What’s with all the friggin complaining about the win? The refs handed us the win…really? Smacking Eller’s head against the ice after he’s taken down without the puck. Countless slashes after the puck has been passed and a legit goal disallowed. Yeah smells like favoritism for the Habs.
We scored one more goal than them tonight to get the win…deserved? Yes!
If anyone can count the number of oddman rushes the Habs get against Boston, it would be interesting to know. It’s a defensive system, but takes advantage of slow teams like the Bruins, as long as the passes are on. not so much tonight, but almost every other game this series.
Sorry to nitpick, we actually scored two more goals than them tonight for the one goal win.

Habs used an interesting strategy to try to deal with that. Latish in the third, on at least one face-off, Cammalleri went in to take the draw — and got tossed. So, in steps Plekanec. He didn’t win the draw, but the tactic was interesting.
many of our forwards did not have a good game but we won and hopefully they pick it up in game 7….somehow this team is able to win games…if you had to grade each player individually we are not a very talented group…we probably will have to win 1-0 , 2-1 and the puck will be in our zone a large portion of the game.
I am absolutely sick of seeing the “it was a terrible win” BS. A win in the playoffs… nevermind a win in a elimination game is HUGE. Our goals only came on the powerplay? No, Gionta scored a disallowed goal on 5-5. The rest of the league is right, us habs fans are absolutely stupid sometimes. Rejoice, you wankers, we won the goddamn game. Sloppy passing? Crappy shooting? Slow D? Well, Boston had the same thing going on and the better team capitalized. I’d rather see this kind of game and win than be forced to watch the rest of the playoffs without them.

Granted the Hornton goal was pretty flukey but you’re not lucky if you’re not good and you’re not good if you’re not lucky. You cannot convince me that we outplayed them in all of the 6 games. Montréal is hanging on by a thread and have capitalized on miscues and turnovers for most of the series. Whether one team is better at capitalizing than the other… hence the better team emerges with the win. You can outplay the team all night but if you can’t finish, well, you’re not the better team, plain and simple. We won! Quit bitching.

He’s having a strong series. Although I wasn’t sure what to make of his acquisition, we can at least be content that his progress this year has been steady. Whatever he is to become in the NHL, he’s made good in his first year as a Hab.
Every time I see him and his big tall frame cruising around out there, he reminds me of a young Mats Sundin. When this kid puts on a couple of pounds as he finishes his growth spurts he’s going to be a DAMNED good one. I still say that trade is looking like highway robbery for the Habs. I would really like to see him get more ice time and more responsibility on a higher line to see what he does with it.

Even if the Lucic hit didn’t seem to have intent, it’s hard to argue the call. According to the rules, a boarding call that results in a head injury is pretty much a guaranteed 5 and a game.

While I don’t hate Spatch they way I hate Gomez, and I like him as a guy and respect his hard work and dedication he is bad. JM needs to grow a pair and make some decisions to not play certain veterans so much. Give guys like White more icetime. The guys is solid in his role, he is tenacious, he forechecks, he hits… Bad qualities for a hockey player?

they did score 5 on 5…and Gomez as much as I think he stinks the joint up some nights, played a pretty good game tonight…if he played like this everynight, I would have no problem with him.

I agree about Spacek. Unfortunately, if Wisniewski can’t play, then Spacek has to play some significant minutes; there’s no other option. Do you want Sopel or Mara as your #4 D?
I was at the game — and that was nuts!!! I love this team. Beats the crap out of the homophobic, racist atmosphere at TD Banknorth (I was at game 5). Total lack of class.
A win, but a worrisome one. No even strength goals – where would we have been without the refs. With a few brief stretches, it was like watching a 60 minute PK. Sloppy passing and lack of line chemistry, especially from AK, who seems to be back in the haze of earlier this season. Boston seemed to be clogging the neutral zone more and we didn’t adjust very well. Over-reliance on the older veterans – lucky we didn’t need them for OT. But last of all, thanks to JM for sitting Benny. He had a much better view of the game than either White or Weber, and logged almost as much ice time. Let’s hope Max wasn’t teaching him the finer points of Tweeting up there in the press box.

In all fairness they lost game 4 in which they were out playing the Bruins for most of the game. It all evens out. Lose some you should have won and win some where the team sucks.
Habs fell back on their rope a dope strategy. Instead of looking like winners and ending up with a loss.

They staved off elimination and forced game 7. Considering the refs also disallowed a clear Habs goal I don’t think you can attribute this win to the reffing.
Veterans are expected to lead in the playoffs. I think it’s encouraging to see Pleks, Cammalleri, Gionta and Gomez get such a large percentage of the shots.
