The Canadiens game against the Rangers Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden (7 p.m., RDS, TSN-HABS, TSN 690 Radio) will be somewhat of a homecoming for Habs tough-guy Brandon Prust, who spent three seasons in New York before signing a four-year, $10-million free-agent contract with Montreal last summer.
While Rangers coach John Tortorella told Larry Brooks of the New York Post that he will see “a guy in a Montreal uniform” goalie Henrik Lundqvist had more to say about Prust.
“He’s a funny guy, a good player who helped us a lot on the penalty kill and who takes a lot of pain for the group,” Lundqvist told Brooks. “What stands out to me is how hard he works and how he puts his body on the line for the team. I respect that a lot. He has a big heart.”

there’s a poster here who keeps bringing up the name, Theo Pekham, a 25 year old d-man, 6’2 and 245 lbs, who is Edmonton Oilers’ property.
I know he’s tough as nails. That’s about all I know about him.
If we had him as a 7th d-man, to rotate into the lineup in case of injury, or against certain very physical teams, wouldn’t that be more valuable then having Yannick Weber?
Would the Oilers be looking for a right handed shooting, offensive d-man, Weber, in exchange for Pekham?
Is that a realistic trade for both teams, and one that maybe would make sense for both teams?
Throwing it out there.
Hobie, i’m with you guys that we need to have a heavyweight on our fourthline.
I’m really surprised though that no one has mentioned Patrick Bordeleau who plays
for the Avs? Check him out, thats who we need for our fourt line.
Alright, another Habs game tonight!
10-4-1, not too shabby at all. That’s a 2:1 win/loss record. Beauty! It’s fun to be a Habs fan again.
Some 2013 Draft notes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_NHL_Entry_Draft
Columbus has 3 1st round picks this year, their own, L.A. Kings and NY Rangers.
Interesting, once the Kings qualified for the Playoffs, Columbus had choice of last year draft or this year. They chose well, can you imagine if the Kings actually continue to have a bad year?
Also apparantly the Devils still have the option of forfeiting either this upcoming 1st round pick or the following season. I was sure I had read this upcoming season was the year it had to be forfeited.
The Devils must have really wanted Steffan Matteau…. forfeiting the 29th overall pick is the best one could hope for without winning the Cup.
The Habs have only about 6 players on the current roster under 25…The Habs do seem to have many potential young talent in their system…If the Habs are in the same position at the trade deadline as they are now it will be interesting to see what philosophy the team takes in adding talent for a potential suprise cup run(this being a unique season)…
So Stubbs tweets that Mayer is signing in Europe. Clearly Tokarski becomes the #1 goalie in Hamilton now. I like that there may be some upside with this young goalie. However, as I have said in the past, perhaps this is the year we use a draft choice on a goalie and see what we get.
I do find it funny that the 2nd round pick Brian Burke traded away to improve his 1st round pick two years ago for Tyler Biggs turned into the World Junior Gold medal Goalie. John Gibson.
Goalies seem to be the one position where good to great ones can be found in late rounds.
Mayer has no chance of even seeing backup minutes on a regular basis in the NHL. Europe would be the best move for his career.

In the limited exposure Galchenyuk has had on the riveting drama 24CH, I sure get the impression of an extremely level headed kid. Seems to me we have the good fortune of a talented player with no “bad ego” per se.
Ok folks. Last Call. 21 minutes before the new thread. Let’s start wrapping things up here…
Torts is an Ass, Prust is getting a Gordie Howe Hat Trick tonight, AG is our best draft pick in recent memory, We still need a tough defenceman and Mrs. Staal never did visit Ians ranch in N.B., but rumours suggest otherwise.
Well done, Burly. HIO in a nutshell.
John Tortorella just tweeted in response: “Hey…Sit on it!”
I am wondering… as these guys fight, are they not allowed to use any martial arts techniques? All they ever seem to do is just a punch or avoid the punch… what if someone did any kind of joint manipulation, locks, chokes, or any other number of MA moves? Has anyone seen anything like that before?
Not sure, but guessing kicks to the head wouldn’t be allowed.
I think someone tried to pull some martial arts crap in the early 90s but Bob Probert sent him into early retirement.
lol! North south position on ice!!!!
Ask Chara- he is a judo expert.
arm bar submission would he hilarious..catch a punch flip his arm drop to the ice and have him tap out! We should start looking into the Brazilian national hockey program for our tough dman!
Followed by the ref getting right down next to them and giving the three-count on the ice.
no..2 and half…then one of the linesmen turns on the referee and pulls him off after smaking him with one of the players dropped sticks…just then Mrs Staal jumps out on the ice and hits the linesmen over the head with a purse (camera pans to O’Byrne giggling in stands while Piere MCguire calls the action)….the buzzer goes and everyone is dq’d but you just wait until the next pay per view…
This kind of arm bar? – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enbjleybS_E
That was scary, I thought I saw part of her arm disappear into a cavity.
THAT’s what you saw?
Was just wondering if anything other than punching was actually prohibited by the “rules”.
fighting is againt the “rules” but someone shold ask BGL re the “code”…there must be another unwriten rule in the rulebook that doesn’t exist ….I’ll get on ebay and order my secret decoder pen.
What about Begin’s take down flip the other day…
http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/116042
I haven’t seen anyone else mention this so I will bring it up. At the NHL level, we always hear the need for bigger players. I saw a clip on Montreal TVA (French TV) this morning about a 12 year old kid playing Pee Wee hockey, that is 6′ 6″, 250lbs. He is the size of Chara playing with and against other 12 year olds that are about 5′ tall. I only saw part of the clip but I think he is going to be playing in a tornament somehwhere (Quebec City?) this weekend.
I saw that clip. The kid looked awkward on the ice, but it probably has more with him growing too quickly, and not being accustomed to his height.
He was a full 2 feet taller than some kids. At his age he should have fun playing the sport, and not worry about anything else.
QUESTION OF THE MINUTE –
Do we start trading our press box defenseman now, or wait until the trade deadline?
When will we receive the most value?
If you can deal Kaberle, you deal him as soon as you get a good offer.
Also I only trade one of the two “press box defencemen” because injuries are bound to happen, you won’t go through the entire season with just 6 D unless we are extraordinarily lucky.
Go Habs Go!

St Denis is a good option to call up. If you can move Kabby I agree don’t hesitate.
Weber is more useful to us and has a friendlier cap hit. In saying that Weber should be given a shot somewhere in the NHL
“Keep your stick on the Ice”
Do I always have to agree with you Kooch? Okay, I do agree with you again…..
Sorry Gerald! Not much cause of debate on these topics I guess LOL
They also need to give guys like Tinordi, in Beaulieu a few games up to know what they need to do to stay there. I think both of the above could come up and not really hurt us that bad.
I really like the look of our D in two years with Price.
Just need to work on that offense
“Keep your stick on the Ice”
If dealing Kaka take any offer from anyone even a bag of used pucks to clear cap space for a press box guy.
GO HABS GO!!!
“Opinions are like assholes and everybody has one.”
Hopefully the Habs brass only takes the best ones!
I’d wait until the deadline. Teams are always clamouring for PMD by then. Even Kaberle might look appealing to somebody.
With the Cap decreasing next year, a 7th rounsder and a bag of puck is preferable to Kaberle’s cap hit. Weber is decent enough backup on D. If injuries persist then the next step is calling up Tinordi. So I say move Kaberle as soon as the opportunity arises.
http://bleublancetrouge.ca/
Just to kill time…and to add to the draft discussions below.
Would you prefer Galchenyuk or the #3 this year? Should be Drouin or Barkov by all reports so far.
I think Chucky will be the better player overall and I love his attitude.
I think we really got a steal with Galchenyuk at #3. If not for his injury he would have challenged Nail for 1st overall.
But either Barkov or Drouin would look beautiful in a Habs Jersey.
Could you imagine the Habs down the middle with Barkov.
Galchenyuk
Barkov
Eller
Pleks
DD
Our biggest weakness over the last 20 years would be our biggest strength.
But, we are winning games this year, too bad. (joking, kind of..)
LOL I was just typing something similar when you posted. Great minds I guess
“Keep your stick on the Ice”
Agree with both jols and kooch. Agree that if AG had not been hurt last year it is a coin flip between he and Yakupov.
Given our need for a bigger centerman, I am ecstatic with who we got.
Having said all that, lets make a Sam Pollock type move and get a pick which lands us Drouin, for years we can hear about Galchenyuk to Drouin, Et BUt!!!!
That would be nice. Wish you were our GM. We would need to trade someone decent to a team that thinks they are better then they really are for their 1st round pick. Then cross our fingers and hope for a melt down…
If Galchenyuk didn’t get injured and miss most of his draft year I am confident he would have went first overall. His game is better all round compared to Yak and he is bigger and a fitness nut.
Yak is struggling with his defensive game so far in the NHL where you can see Gally is much more developed in that area
“Keep your stick on the Ice”
I think a lot of that is the management and team, the habs were better than they showed last year, and chucky got the better team for sure, edmonton is just a team full of hot shots and show boats, no real leadership there, except smyth, but he’s no baby sitter.
Even before though in Jr Gally was looked at having a better all round game than Yak. i still think Yak will be a good NHLer but you are right Edmonton needs more vets on there team for leadership
“Keep your stick on the Ice”
Send them Kaberlazy.

Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.
No comment on the upcoming youngsters because of no familiarity, but Alex the Great version 2013, is the most impressive Montreal 18 or 19 yr. old since the debut of a very swift Serge Savard circa 1968. Hope it’s not sacrilege to say that Alex has been more impressive so far than the debut of the greatest smoking athlete the hockey world has seen, the Great Flower.
“May you live in interesting times.”
Well due to draft rules at the time, Guy was 20 when he made his debut.

I once saw Guy Lafleur chain smoking cigarettes at an autograph signing at a Staples office supplies store. At the time bans on indoor smoking had been in place for at least a few years.
Galchenyuk couldn’t even tie up Lafleur’s skates.
He’s a great kid but let’s stay real here.
Allergic to smoke?
Lafleur’s 1st year stats: 73 games-29 goals 35 assists total: 64 points.
To compare Galchenyuk and Lafleur is not yet realistic. Lets give it a few years.
AND the Habs considered Lafleur to be underachieving his first three years. Beliveau had to take him for a walk to set him straight.
The thing that stands out to me is that Galchenyuk doesn’t have any sort of glaring weaknesses to his game (his shot, vision, passing, stickhandling, speed are very good although apparently his acceleration could be better [if anything]).
He also has a very strong work ethic, and was raised by his father to become a professional hockey player, which shows in his maturity for a now 19 year old. His intangibles are unquestionable and are what should make him continue his development and be successful at the NHL level.
I’m really starting to hate the term ‘measuring stick game’. Shouldn’t this be considered more of a ‘measuring stick game’ for the Rangers, more so than for the Habs?
Nope. For them it’s a “must-win”. Get with the program.
Haha… Good one, Say.
Rangers are 7-2-1 in last ten, play very well at home and have the Habs on tail end of back to back…all signs point to a Rangers win. If the Habs manage to get a point out of this it will be an accomplishment…if they manage 2 then they should appease even the nastiest of doubters.
which is why i’m more and more liking mt’s thinking, going with budaj yesterday, price gives us the chance to steal a point or two tonight
I’m just about as sick of the term “measuring stick game” as I was “make-whole” in December

Having read some of his previous articles, I now understand why he doesn’t seem to mention the Habs too often in whatever news roundup he does.
In any case, the Leafs will probably continue to have a good record: they only started playing against Ottawa after they lost both Spezza and Karlsson, and their toughest matchup was against the Bruins on Feb 2 – for the rest of February, they will not need to face the Pens, Rangers, Bruins or even the Devils. Two sets of back-to-back games during the month.
He’s not a Leafs fan. He’s a Detroit fan.
He mostly doesn’t mention the Habs too much because he figures I will cover it if its important enough.
Go Habs Go!

Oh, alright. He uses ‘we’ in his article so I figured he roots for the Leafs.
There’s also the point that Damien Cox made this morning – Nonis/Carlyle aren’t afraid to sit players with huge contracts who aren’t producing anymore.
Could you imagine how laff fans would feel if they had Seguin and Hamilton on their team?
Looking at the above Moen Vs Prust scrap, and all of Moen’s other scraps, he always get’s into that tailspin and he and the other combatant spin around and around. Moen doesn’t often land any devastating blows. He’s always swinging wildly. He does a good job of avoid getting his but kicked but really never destroys an opponent.
just something I’ve noticed over the years…
He’s always been a “grab&hold” fighter.
Or Budaj
They should trade carry price for Pekka Rinne
A lateral talent move that’s almost equal in salary, but lose a very good young Canadian boy for a player who’s 30, and makes 7 million for the next 7 years? Now what do you say?

Looking for a big defenseman here who can rotate in when necessary. We have zero.
I would ask Washington about Erskine. I would try to add McIntyre as well. We need two heavy weights to handle Toronto, Boston, it would also help to handle #25 in Ottawa. It will be interesting to see if the Rangers call up has any influence on tonights game.
Prust is gonna show them what he is made of
So Bourque is now Cole and since Diaz has come on we never hear about McDonagh.
Since Gomez and BG are gone we don’t hear about McD.
Although we are off to a great start, I am a little concerned with the Gionta’s play. He seems sluggish out there. Not capitalizing on his scoring chances, losing puck battles, and overall just not the standard of play we have seen him play over the last couple of years.
While watching last nights game, Bourque and Plekanec would start the cycle, and almost every single time Gionta got the puck, he would lose it. Although he has been okay in the D-zone, his O-zone play has been inconsistent at best.
This makes me question whether the Habs will re-sign him when his contract expires. In the long term, I just can’t see the Habs having three players under 5’8 in the top six (DD and Gallagher).
On a side note, i would LOVE to see Gio – DD – Gally73 for just one shift LOL
If its 4 on 4 add Bouillon!!
haha Yes!!

Continuing on the topic of successful draftpicks, Brendan Gallagher may be Habs’ best mid to late round pick since Andrei Markov was a 6th rounder back in ’98. Helps to release the frustration of wasting good work by Trevor Timmins who unearthed NHLers with a sixth round pick, Matt D’Agostini(Aaron Palushaj), a seventh round pick, Sergei Kostitsyn (Dustin Boyd, Dan Ellis), and a ninth round pick, Jaroslave Halak (Lars Eller, Ian Schultz) only to have one GM or another fritter them away. Lars Eller could be considered excellent return on that particular year’s ninth round pick position i.e. not Jaro per se, but that pick position.
big game tonight boys…measuring stick – mainly due to the back to back and the travel – not cause the Rags are good.
remember the 6 goal comeback? I do.

Lars, PK, Galchenyuk, Pac, Emelin – @J_Perez22
1 week minimum, NHL rules.
I really hope its soon, I’d hate to lose him for the rest of the season
http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/
7 Day protocol is not mandatory in his case, from what I understand. Therrien was considering using him today as of Sunday.
“thoroughbred”
Galchenyuk is the best 3rd overall pick since Jonathan Toews. Better than Jonathan Huberdeau. Equal to Carey Price as the best Habs draftee in the Columbus Blue Jackets era. Honorable mentions to P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty.
“May you live in interesting times.”
PK is the best pick we’ve made near the top of the draft, I’d expect Price to be where he’s at taken at #5 although it was a bit off the board at the time.
———————————
Lars, PK, Galchenyuk, Pac, Emelin – @J_Perez22
P.K…43rd overall 2nd round..not that close to the top..but he was a steal at 43.
Go Habs Go!!
Absolutely agree.
Once in a while, tanking is absolutely necessary. PG and BG giftwrapped that pick for Bergevin, and while it sucks to be bottom of the barrel, it`s nice to finally have a great prospect.
Price and the team have a lot more faith in their back up tender after the last two games. We all know Budaj can play now, he is not a Cary Price for sure, but we know he can play.
So the coach now knows if he needs to pull Cary for any reason, that Budaj can stop a few pucks and the boys will play hard for him.
+1; Budaj played well for the last seven games or so at the end of last season when Carey was concussed during a practice. Budaj also did record nine shutouts with the Avalanche. A more reliable no. 2 than Alex Auld, Michael Leighton, and Haroslav Jalak.
“May you live in interesting times.”
Obviously I didn’t read the article about Mrs Staal, but why would having four hockey sons mean you have seen it all?
She lives on a farm in Thunder Bay and her kids play hockey.
She actually hasn’t seen it all has she? I mean she’s probably seen less than just about every human being of her age.
In fact after the first hockey playing son, the other hockey playing sons would add very little to her store of knowledge. She’d have seen more if one of her sons had played another sport, like water polo.
She never visited my ranch in N.B. either!
Wouldn’t that have set tongues wagging …
By “all” I think they mean injuries, smelly socks, and french fries from hundreds of hockey rinks.
————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
I guess the Rangers are taking a page out of the leafs playbook with their 6’4″ 230lb call up…..nobody on the current roster can touch that. Too bad 1 of the 2 useless D-man that never play and spend all their time in the pressbox couldn’t be traded for a 6’4″ 230lb meathead…why can’t he sit in the presser until he’s needed?
Go Habs Go!!
Just because he’s 6’4″ means he can fight. We need a 6’4″ guy who can re-arrange faces. Starting with Lucic.
That’s what you guys need.
It isn’t what the Habs need to win games.
I thought his face was rearranged at birth. Only way to explain that mug.
I guess you didn’t read the article in NY post…all he does is fight. the poor Habs will be on run all night…..NY is going to come out banging…will the boys be up to it?
Go Habs Go!!
Lucy’s face is already rearranged.
Checked out a few of Mashinder”s fights. He is a big lad but no Colton Orr. Tanner Glass even took him down . I think Prust can handle him. Parros? He hasn”t won his last few fights.
You got that right ….we need about “x 3″ of them!
Don”t need a press box goon amigo. We need one of these.http://youtu.be/uM8chVfQNRQ
We have one…His name is Jarred Tinordi lol
Sam McCaig of Yahoo Sports in his NHL Power Rankings has the Habs at #10 and says…..
“They’ve been getting great contributions from a mobile defense corps and a couple of undersized rookies, but in the end the Habs will go as far as Carey Price can carry them.”
A couple of undersized rookies?
Galchenyuk is 6’2 and 190 lbs on a bad day and this just goes to show that any dumbass with a working computer and keyboard can become a hockey writer.
(Sigh)
Some people don’t get the facts straight eh?
http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/
are you saying that brendan gallagher isn’t undersized?
Gally plays like he’s 6’5 he might be short but he doesn’t play undersized
http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/
Couple = two. Only one would be considered undersized. Lazy writing at best or misinformed at worst by the author.
———————————–
If McCaig was after intrigue, he could have used adjectives like “raw,” “surprising,” “gifted,”…… All in all, I think he gave props to our team, and especially Pricey. Greetings good friend!
Would be nice to see Prust pot one against his old team.

JUST 1 David?
That ship has sailed (and you we’re on it!). Ian is witness to the fact that I repaid my bet. In fact, he was the one who reaped the rewards!
Rob – Glad to see your comment about the West just being the West. I always look at the NHL as being like MLB. For me, the NHL is a 15 team league. There are lots of exciting players to watch out west, but who cares, they only count if you reach the final.
In terms of the East, Pittsburgh and Boston have the truly dominate players (as you mentioned). The Rangers have the best goalie but it all drops off after that. I don’t get the Devils but I agree with you that Montreal could finish 4th or 5th. Ottawa is done and Washington is flirting with the Vegas odds so that could be two teams who the Habs might just get to unexpectly leapfrog over this season.
Hab allegiances aside, I think it’s fair to say that Montreal is better than Winnipeg, the Isles and Florida. Certainly better in net where it counts the most. In theory, the Habs then only need to beat out two more teams for a playoff spot.
As of right now the Candiens need about 35 points in 33 games….in the three point era that should be doable
Someone mentioned Eller to Columbus for Brassard. No gain there. Both around the same size. Both capable of playing 2nd line. Eller would get more ice time in Columbus. I would probably make that trade with DD just to get more size. Not that I don’t like him.
Just say no to Walsh.
Somebody should create a Walsh avatar with a prohibitive line ala no-smoking.
Actually that someone mentioned Brassard was available and that the GM of Columbus knew of Eller. But nowhere did that someone suggest make the trade for those two. In fact that someone later suggested DD for Brassard, but perhaps you speak of a someone other than I.
I hope Carey Price is up to the challenge tonight.
Peter Budaj will be watching.
Budaj faced 19 shots in each of his last two games he should not be tired today. I would give Price one more day of rest!
There is no need for Carey Price to look over his shoulder for Budaj!
\”Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing\”
Going through a stomach virus,as we all know, can sap one’s strength considerably. Obviously, Price is the number 1 goalie, but considering the way Budaj has played vs the Flyers & Hurricanes, I wonder if it wouldn’t be the prudent thing to do and give Carey 1 more day of rest.
Players have top notch medical care. Recovery time from a flu is much quicker for them.
