Prospect watch: NCAA talent doing just fine

The Canadiens have drafted a plethora of NCAA players in recent years and with the success of players like Christopher Higgins and Mike Komisarek, Habs fans have reason to be hopeful some of the recent NCAA crop will be just as good.

According to Hockey’s Future, defencemen David Fischer and Ryan McDonagh, who were left off the U.S. junior team for the recent world junior tournament, have stepped up their play despite the disappointment of that decision and have played some of their best hockey of the season since then, according to Trevor Timmins, the Canadiens’ director of player recruitment and development.

The report also looks at prospects Max Pacioretty, J.T. Wyman, Joe Stesjkal and Philippe Paquet.

I believe that Gainey has chosen players available at the entry draft according to their ranking in the Canadiens scouting reports. The Canadiens will take the next best player available on their list, regardless of position, when it’s their turn to pick.

It is for this reason that the name Carey Price raised many eyebrows after being chosen fifth overall in 2005 despite the fact that Montreal was goaltender heavy with a young Theodore in Montreal & promising prospects in Hamilton. The draft is a crap-shoot involving too many “unknowns” to be very effective in providing immediate solutions to any teams needs.

That is why, I believe, this team has so much depth at the crucial positions of defence and goaltending. Eventually the cream will rise to the top (Komisarek, Markov, O’Byrne, Mcdonough, Pacioretty, Emelin, Valentenko, Price, Halak, Plecs, AK46, SK74, Lapierre, Chipchura, Grabs, Higgins, Lats, Ryder et al), leaving them in a good bargaining position to acquire the missing elements needed, possibly through trades, to build a perennial Stanley Cup contender.

This team has an excellent nucleus of NHL talent that is still developing with more on the way. I see this team contending sooner rather than later. Just look at where all the experts picked this team to finish this year.

For those who are not, it’s going to be great to be a Habs fan in the not too distant future.

    Go Habs Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
