Price, Price and more Price

Pat Hickey’s take:

“There
was never any doubt that Price would sign and my only surprise was
that Gauthier seemed unnecessarily generous, giving Price $2.5 million
in the coming season and $3 million the following season.

“It’s a
bargain if he can surpass the numbers he put up as a rookie. But it
will be wasted money if he doesn’t improve over his performance since
February 2009. Since Price appeared in the 2009 All-Star game in
Montreal, he has looked like anything but an all-star. His record in
that period has been 20-32-10 which means that he has lost more than
twice as many games as he has won”

Interesting analysis from Arpon Basu:

” … a
$2.75 million cap hit over the next two years is a good deal for both
Price and the Canadiens. It gives both sides a good window to see what
will become of this talented young man who clearly lost his way at last
year’s All-Star break, but who hasn’t necessarily lost it altogether.
For Price, he makes a very decent wage and has two years to prove
himself. For the Canadiens, should Price completely flop his contract is
not an albatross and is only on the books for two years.”

Boone rants

• And in La Presse, Richard Labbé writes “with two weeks to go until the opening of training camp, Pierre Gauthier can breathe a bit easier. The most pressing issues have been taken care of, and the club can concentrate on hockey.”

At ruefrontenac.com, Pierre Durocher says the Canadiens were very generous in the amount of money they’ve shelled out for Price.

Bob Hartley predicts Price will be under enormous pressure.

And ticket packages go on sale online tomorrow.

I share your opinion about Josh.

We have a few leaders who could all be captains but, I don´t see why the captain should be the guy who makes the most points…

    Thanks for mentioning this.

Arpon’s blog post this morning made mention that Price received 1.87 GPG support past season. Now, I don’t have the time to crunch those numbers myself but Arpon’s good people and generally pretty reliable, so I’ll run on the basis that he’s accurate. In order for a goalie to consistently win games when the team is scoring 1.87 goals per game, he’d need a GAA south of 2.00 – or at least in that vicinity since let’s face it some nights are going to be your 4-3 or 5-1 games – which would have him the league leader in that category. Only Rask, at 1.97, was under 2.00 last year. Obviously that would have been awesome if Carey was sporting a 1.86 GAA (and imagine the SV% on that!) but given that most of the best goalies last year were in the 2.20-2.30 range, it’s a little unrealistic.

Hockey is a team game. Sometimes the goalie is going to have an off-night, sometimes the offence isn’t going to click, and sometimes you’ll have both. All of those factors go into a loss. It’s not just “oh Price let in one bad goal and that totally deflated the team so that’s why they lost” – I think people tend to hyperinflate the negative value of a stinker goal against, given that they’re all professional athletes and shouldn’t be affected for the remaining 37:13 of the game if Carey lets in an ugly one at 2:47 of the second period.

It also doesn’t take a genius to know that all star games barely count. 2001 all star game finished 14-12 and that game featured Roy, Hasek and Brodeur.

No, he had a really good time that weekend. You, however, embarrass yourself every single time you hit the “Post comment” button.

Anyone have tickets for the Dec.4th game vs the Sharks that they want to sell?  I need 2 tickets.

  19. SLONCOLD says:

i think it’s kinda split. for everyone calling him a “bust” there are people calling him a future superstar. There is always lots of presure on top10 draft picks especially in montreal and escpecially at teh goalie position. Habs maybe shouldn’t have hyped up price as much as they did but i’m sure he’ll work through it. I expect PK to have ups and down but he has a support crew arround him to help coach/mentor him into the position so i think there will be more tolerance towards his play

  20. volcano62 says:

Was it not part of the same weekend event? bottom line is Price embarrassed himself, the team and the fans.

  21. HFX-HabFan says:

Either that, or speculating that Gino’s parents are actually members of the Russian mob.

  22. rocketsglare says:

The deal is done. No more speculation on when he will sign and for how much and for how long.

Price must now demonstrate to the many faithful and there are many, by playing up to his ability

and potential and cease this opportunity to become the netminder that management and fans

believe he is capable of becoming. Nothing less will be accepted after so much has been invested

in this promising young man. Only Price can become that “thoroughbred”. Does he have what it

takes to lead this team to success? Does he have it in him to become a star in this league?

Only time will tell but he has been given 2 years to show us and more importantly, himself, that

    he is the real deal.

  23. J.J. of Turku says:

    Hmmmmm…

I’d say, with Markov and Subban we don’t need him…

    http://media.turku.fi/kamera1.html

  24. HFX-HabFan says:

I know he’s your boy and everything, but the emergence of Subban + Markov being healthy by the end of October = MAB being rendered moot.

He might latch on with another team though.  Defensive deficiencies be darned.

  25. fbkj says:

  27. habs001 says:

while we have markov and pk i believe we need at least one more d with speed…as of now we have 5 slow d in hammer, spacek, gill, gorges and obyrne who provide minimal support for our forwards in the offensive zone as they have to be conservative due to their lack of speed.

  28. fbkj says:

okay we were talking about the all star game then you retort with the youngstar game as if thats what we were even talking about

Good catch brother!!!! Do you agree that was when his slide began?

  31. HFX-HabFan says:

Does anyone care about ASG stats??  Seriously?

Probably every goalie’s ASG stats would be a GAA well north of 3, which would be terrible by regular season standards…and yet these guys are all-stars, what’s up with that?  I mean Brodeur?  He sucks at the ASG!  Miller?  Terrible at the ASG!  Roy always sucked at the ASG!

Honestly, some people look for anything to blame Price.  “He was an all-star, but then he sucked at the all-star game!  Idiot!”

  32. jimmy shaker says:

MAB recovering nicely from major knee surgery….should be available in November as per RDS.  Can’t wait for the habs to bring him back and keep the PP clicking.  13 goals last season……I could see him potting 15+ this year.  PG will offer him a contract guarantee!

  33. mike g says:

Like someone said below, I’m kinda happy we never hired him as our coach….

When on the radio, he sometimes sounds like a guy who knows what he’s talking about and someone who’s respected by many. But the more you listen to him, the more he sounds like Michel Bergeron, always referring to when Hartley won the Cup with the Avs.

The guy had an All-Star team, that’s why he won. I’m sure he’s a good coach, but I dunno….Maybe the guys on RDS are making him dumb, cuz we all know they’re not the sharpest tools.

  35. volcano62 says:

LOL so you are impressed by Price’s performance in the youngstars game? 9 GOALS!!!! Rinne only let 5 in with more shots on net!! It’s nothing short of pure embarrassement.

  36. G-Man says:

Sorry, Ian. That was last season. This season, it’s Price or Auld. Auld? Why in hell sign Mr. 895? Absolutely stunning management moves.

  37. habs 4 future says:

the only thing Price will prove, is that he can’t do the job!

this will be his 4th chance. who in life gets 4 chances????? NOOOOOOOOOOO body!

what a damn waste of $$$$$. but isn’t Gainey/Gauthier great at wasting $$$$? ie. Gomez 7.5 for garbage!

  38. HFX-HabFan says:

Apparently Mike Comrie is about sign with the…Penguins?  Unless Malkin shifts to the wing full-time, Comrie would be the fourth line centre.

And what if Crosby starts hitting on Hillary?

  39. jrshabs1 says:

Dude..wtf brother? 4 leading 2 at the break….how did he stink it up?

  40. fbkj says:

take a look at how many games niemi has actually played

take a look at his stats

take a look at the team he was on

    that answers your niemi question

habs could have signed pleks and halak leaving them with no money for a backup or wiggle room

  41. G-Man says:

    Why $1mil for Auld, then?

There was room if management wanted, but their eyes have been blinded by Price for years. If the Cup Champ goalie gets $2mil, how is Price worth an avg of $2.5mil?
